[Q] AT&T GS3 No data connection, APN's wont save. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a AT&T GS3 running Packman Rom, one day i was updating my rom data was working fine and after i flashed the update i had no data connection, so i restored from a back up before the rom update and same thing no data, so i restored my phone with ODIN using the default ROM, still no data. So i restored from the backup again and found out i had no APN's in the APN settings area. So i tried restoring defaults, nothing happens it says "defaults restored" or something along those lines and nothing shows up, when i try setting my own APN with the right stuff and i save still nothing there. Any ideas on how to fix? I have downloaded some apps to manage the APN's but they don't work on android 4.0 +.

I know this is the wrong section but i cant find the right one, link anyone?

Apn Fix?

Hey guys, could not really find what I was looking for
After you are running a rom, and obviously need to get mms working, what is the proper steps to running a apn fix? I see in the aloysius post someone posted the apn from Ivans, and was curious how to run it on the rom already in progress?
Thanks
There's a program called "apn backup and restore" that will let you restore the correct apn file.
Just download the apn file from that thread to your sd card, install that app, and restore the correct file.

This update was intended for my ZenEXP-Eris build, but it should work on most, if not all ROMs here as well.
Do a nandroid backup before installing in case it doesn't work, then flash through recovery: LINK
thanks guys..works great!
I have been using this app for a while now and never had an issue restoring after a restore. I am using the Fresh 2.1.1 Rom and flashed Ivan's 1.0 Rom and sucessfuly backed up the apn when I restored and try to restore the Apn I keept getting an error code 8 can't write to a read only database. I haven't done anything different from the norm. Anyone have an idea or know who I should be contacting?

Are you not able to send or receive mms messages? I am also running fresh 2.1.1 and I thought I could send/receive them.
I can send but I don't get them Either I was trying to do the APN flash to fix it. Our Rom isn't verizon based so the network acts funny on text messages. The work around was to flash Ivan's rom after you make a nandroid backup of your Fresh Rom install then dl APN Backup & Restore and then back up the APN of Ivan's rom to the SD card. And then restore the Fresh 2.1.1 and dl the APN app again but restore the .xml from the SD card to fix the mode of connection to start recieving mms/sms and voicemail alerts. If you hadn't changed the prl if it would help you this is the time to do it,Download the Alltel_Verizon Hybrid.prl file, enter ##778 in the dialer hold call for a few seconds let go then choose edit mode and for password 6 zeros. Select prl, then update prl, the keyboard shows up first but just hit the back button onec and you will see the prl you downloaded to the root of the SD card and then choose and say ok, then hit menu and commit changes. After a short bit a message stating the phone needs to reboot and vola! you have add your phone to the extra Alltel towers in your area. AFTER DOING THIS DO NOT *228 and let the automated PRL service run, this will remove the Alltel Hybrid PRL and you will have to redo the Ivan flash method. Most roms are not developed with the epsk.apk(think thats the name) which is invoked with the ##778 send. This is optional because for some it is a hit or miss of a fix. For some it clears up areas that they may have not gotten signal and reduces it in already covered areas.
Realize this is a long answer to your simple question but just wanted to clear up for others that may not know.

APN settings gone!

I clicked "Reset to Default" on the Apn menu and then they all disappered and i cannot connect. There used to be like 5 different apns. Is there a way to retrieve them back, i am no longer able to connect to the data.
Hi, are you using Market Enabler or other app that change operator code? Try disabling it, restart the phone and then try to reset.

If you can get wifi, go to the market and download apn backup and restore. It comes with a whole bunch of apn's and should be able to restore the ones you're missing. If you have an sd card, you have to copy the apnbackuprestore folder to the internal phone memory, or else it wont see the backup..

Strange, when i installed apn back up and restore it came with an .xml file that had 900+ apns.. I can try to post it, but just take a look in your apnbackuprestore folder, if you have an sd card, copy that folder to the internal phone memory..
Unzip the file first, then place in your apnbackuprestore folder.
you would have your apn's back by now if you have typed them in. how lazy can you be? Also, most pseudo roms and scripts install them.

No need to flame this post... Apns can be kind of tricky, especially if you make one little error.. Then nothing works. I don't blame him for wanting a simpler way of restoring the apn, after typing in the information by hand 20+ times, I found a much easier way of doing it.
Ok i got connect again, thanks to you guys. I am currently connected "AT&T US HSDPA", is it any different then just the "AT&T" apn? Also I used to get a H+ logo, but now i only get H (I am on gingerblur), it because of the settings or just do not have 4g right now?

I think its just because of Gingerblur. I used to have the H+ on my stock rom as well..

Ok thanks for the reassurance. So what apn is better "AT&T"-wap.cingular or "AT&T US HSDPA"-phone

Works!! Thanks!!

[Q] CM7 4G Connectivity Issues

Okay so. I've read through about 150 of the pages on the CM7 thread in the Development section. I've done every fix (CDMA + evdo Auto to CDMA +evdo / LTE, change in and out of airplane mode, wiped everything twice including system, etc.) I've come across that's been mentioned, and I'm still having some connectivity issues. I don't have 10 posts, so I can't post in that thread... so here I am.
I'm on the official MR2 radio, using CM7 RC1.2. I've wiped and reflashed several times, changed radios, and have had no luck. I had 4G service yesterday. I didn't change anything or reboot or anything, and I can only get 3G today.
I thought it might have been that because it's a new 4G area, there were some issues, but the three other people I know with 4G phones (All Thunderbolts, ironically) are reporting no issues themselves.
So is there a fix in that behemoth of a thread that I missed? I've been scouring Google and XDA all day trying to find something I hadn't tried before. Please help!
I was having similar issues the first time I loaded the MR2+ build.
Have you tried formatting /system? (clockwork recovery -> mounts and storage -> format /system)
After this, I've had no issues. I'm using the OTA MR2 radio.
format /system
wipe data / factory reset
flash cm7
flash gaaps
Just a suggestion....
You said you wiped everything (must wipe) before flashing which is correct for 1.2. However, you didn't say whether you restored any data with TiBu. I mention this because if you restored some system data with TiBu (mainly APN associated) then you will still have problems.
If you go to Menu->Settings->Wireless&Network->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names is there anything listed there? If not, try Menu->reset to default.
I believe it screws up and is blank if you didn't wipe or restored data from a previous install. So if you did restore that, go back, wipe, reflash, and don't restore this time.
I'll check out the APN menu as soon as I get done being stuck at a bootscreen after formatting /system.
I realized I had formatted system before, but then restored a Nandroid backup like a moron.

after formatting /system and /data + /cache, you need to reflash cm7.

Okay, so this seemed to bare the most fruit.
Now, following the reset, there's like 17 different choices. Is there one that needs to be selected or does it matter? The choices are either EHRPD or LTE and then it's Verizon APP, Verizon ADMIN, Verizon IMS, Verizon Internet.
And after a completely fresh wipe with no restoration, I'm still in the same place I was before.
Thanks to you guys for all your help, by the way. I know it gets tedious on here.
So it would appear that this is a problem that's not limited to CM7, as I've flashed a Sense ROM and am having the same issue.
This makes me think that it's kernel or radio related, but I'm not nearly experienced enough in that area to say for sure. Only getting 3G connectivity. How frustrating.
thanks! i did the reset under apn's and although i dont see that much more 4g connectivity, my dl/ul went back up to almost the same rates as when I was running the stock rom (10.5mbps/3mbps from 3.5/.6)
Interesting note however, I noticed when I run a speed test, im able to maintain "4g" during the ping test, but it switches to "3g hsdpa" when it does the dl/ul test...?
Would this be a radio issue with CM7? and if so, how come I really cant find any radios available for download? (kind of a noob sorry)
*UPDATE*
Hey so I was doing some research, and i found this concerning t-mobile radios for the SGH-T989:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1426001.html
I ended up flashing the Tmo VK1 due to his suggestion that it was better for HSPA+ AWS 1700 (files found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22557244&postcount=172)
Although I'm still not showing 4g connectivity (its still showing up as "H"), I did get 48ms ping, 17.19mbps dl, and 1.70mbps ul using the speedtest.net app.
Still havent tried the Telus KJ3 though...
Wikipedia says that tmobile actually renamed their "3g" network to "4g"? "T-Mobile is marketing its HSPA+ services as 4G." I dunno if that makes a difference, just food for thought.

Kernels and ROMs

hey there
im kind of new to kernels and roms.
a few months ago i flashed a new kernel and lite 'ning on my phone.
and like 3 weeks ago i wanted something new. i flashed a new kernel with odin.
What i was wondering if i flash a new kernel using odin will it delete the older kernel or will it kind of **** up the kernel? is there some kind of process you need to do before flashing another kernel?
Then i flashed Sensation ROM witch gave me some problems. somewhile along the day i lose my connection ''No Service -selected network (...) not available''
I am wondering if this is a problem with the ROM or with the Kernel.
Also mabey a solution without losing contacts, apps, messages?
Thanks Alot!!!
Search, search, search!!!
More info would be useful too...
You can flash a new kernel via Odin without FUBAR. But most kernels can be flashed via ClockworkMod (CWM) -they're .zip files.
CWM is your backup friend and absolutely essential - you thus won't lose contacts etc.
Search, search, search....
Odin will replace the old kernel, same thing applies when you flash through CWM, just make sure to wipe cache and dalvik.
You should use a backup app like titanium backup for your apps.
Regarding data, try manually entering the APN settings through settings. Settings - Wireless and network - Mobile Networks - Access point Names. Just google the apn settings of your carrier.

Or try the Lazy Bastard Option, like me - APN Backup & Restore app from the market.
Does what it says.
Pleases read me.
Flashing something replaces the old stuff, flashing a kernel will replace the current kernel.
Also that sounds like it might be a rom problem. Maybe try a different rom, or do a full wipe.
Backup your EFS with ktool before you flash anything else. All you need is root.

[Q] [SOLVED] Wifi issues after restoring CWM backup

Hi everyone
I have a GS3 I9300 that I have made a CWM nandroid backup of (the phone is working fine). For reasons irrelevant to this, I have restored this backup onto a different I9300 and all is working as it should except wifi. Whenever I try to connect to a wifi network it always comes up with "authentication error" regardless of what password is put in. I am 100% definitely putting in the correct passwords (tried changing the passwords too just in case) and it still doesnt work.
I have done a factory reset on the phone to test wifi, and it does work without the backup loaded on. I thought this would indicate an issue with the backup, so I booted back into recovery and did an advanced restore and just selected data (no system, recovery, cache etc) and the issue still persists.
As far as I can tell this points towards an issue with the data backup of the original phone. I have tried various things to reset the wifi settings, such as forgetting the network, removing and resetting the wpa_supplicant.conf file, as well as various other methods and none have worked so far.
I think what I need to do is completely reset the wifi settings to stock defaults (being that wifi worked fine without the nandroid backup data). Can anyone advise on how to do this? I can't seem to figure it out.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
This sort of problem will always be data.
Try using titanium and wipe data for "wifi access points"
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I just checked in titanium and under wifi access points, there is the "explore" option under storage and it shows the file path as /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. I have already deleted this file in an adb shell and it didn't change anything. I can't see any option in titanium to clear data for this either, am I missing something?
Oh looks like you can't do it any more.
Tried deleting all networks in wifi settings?
You may have to wipe and restore with titanium
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I have done that. It appears that there is some setting that isn't accessible through the normal phone GUI and needs to be removed or modified through a file explorer or ADB or something. I just need to find out what that setting actually is and where it's located.
Is there a "reset network settings" type of option? Or an option to reset wifi data through an engineering menu or something?
Not that I'm aware of.
Best bet is to wipe and restore as little system data as possible.
These things are hard to track down. You have to restore one thing st a time.
I once had fc in sound settings. Turned out it was because id restored wallpaper settings.
Good luck
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I finally managed to sort it out. The file I needed to delete was the wpa_supplicant.conf file, which I thought I had already deleted through adb shell. It must not have deleted it (maybe I forgot to mount system as r/w). The file is located at /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf - I just manually navigated there with a file explorer and deleted it.
Thanks for you help with this, I probably wouldn't have figured it out if I hadn't messed around with Titanium so thanks for the suggestion.
Edit - is there a way to mark this thread as solved? Sorry I haven't posted here much, just a lurker.
Thanks for posting your solution.
If you edit post 1 then advanced edit, you can change the title
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Updated title. Thanks again
Hey, sorry to dredge this one up, but it seems to be the most relevant to me.. My situation at the moment is exactly the same as the Op, took a backup of an I-9300 using CWM, after restoring this on a different I-9300, I find that everything works except that when I try to connect to any wifi network, it gives me an authentication error.
I've tried deleting the wpa_supplicant.conf through a file explorer, and I'm still getting the same issue.. I'm not sure where to look for the data in Titanium to delete? does anyone have any suggestions for more to try?
Thanks,
Jono
