[Q] [SOLVED] Wifi issues after restoring CWM backup - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
I have a GS3 I9300 that I have made a CWM nandroid backup of (the phone is working fine). For reasons irrelevant to this, I have restored this backup onto a different I9300 and all is working as it should except wifi. Whenever I try to connect to a wifi network it always comes up with "authentication error" regardless of what password is put in. I am 100% definitely putting in the correct passwords (tried changing the passwords too just in case) and it still doesnt work.
I have done a factory reset on the phone to test wifi, and it does work without the backup loaded on. I thought this would indicate an issue with the backup, so I booted back into recovery and did an advanced restore and just selected data (no system, recovery, cache etc) and the issue still persists.
As far as I can tell this points towards an issue with the data backup of the original phone. I have tried various things to reset the wifi settings, such as forgetting the network, removing and resetting the wpa_supplicant.conf file, as well as various other methods and none have worked so far.
I think what I need to do is completely reset the wifi settings to stock defaults (being that wifi worked fine without the nandroid backup data). Can anyone advise on how to do this? I can't seem to figure it out.
Any advice will be much appreciated.

This sort of problem will always be data.
Try using titanium and wipe data for "wifi access points"
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

I just checked in titanium and under wifi access points, there is the "explore" option under storage and it shows the file path as /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. I have already deleted this file in an adb shell and it didn't change anything. I can't see any option in titanium to clear data for this either, am I missing something?

Oh looks like you can't do it any more.
Tried deleting all networks in wifi settings?
You may have to wipe and restore with titanium
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah I have done that. It appears that there is some setting that isn't accessible through the normal phone GUI and needs to be removed or modified through a file explorer or ADB or something. I just need to find out what that setting actually is and where it's located.
Is there a "reset network settings" type of option? Or an option to reset wifi data through an engineering menu or something?

Not that I'm aware of.
Best bet is to wipe and restore as little system data as possible.
These things are hard to track down. You have to restore one thing st a time.
I once had fc in sound settings. Turned out it was because id restored wallpaper settings.
Good luck
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

I finally managed to sort it out. The file I needed to delete was the wpa_supplicant.conf file, which I thought I had already deleted through adb shell. It must not have deleted it (maybe I forgot to mount system as r/w). The file is located at /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf - I just manually navigated there with a file explorer and deleted it.
Thanks for you help with this, I probably wouldn't have figured it out if I hadn't messed around with Titanium so thanks for the suggestion.
Edit - is there a way to mark this thread as solved? Sorry I haven't posted here much, just a lurker.

Thanks for posting your solution.
If you edit post 1 then advanced edit, you can change the title

Updated title. Thanks again

Hey, sorry to dredge this one up, but it seems to be the most relevant to me.. My situation at the moment is exactly the same as the Op, took a backup of an I-9300 using CWM, after restoring this on a different I-9300, I find that everything works except that when I try to connect to any wifi network, it gives me an authentication error.
I've tried deleting the wpa_supplicant.conf through a file explorer, and I'm still getting the same issue.. I'm not sure where to look for the data in Titanium to delete? does anyone have any suggestions for more to try?
Thanks,
Jono

Titanium Backup Issues

Picked up a Vibrant a few days ago, but Im having some issue restoring my apps using Titanium backup 3.3.2.
I having an issue where Titanium Backup says its restoring, but just sits there doing nothing. Somehow Ive managed to get it to restore once, but I had to wipe and now I cant get it to restore for the life of me. Tried w/ original busybox and the one that downloads inside titanium, both w/o success. Seems that titanium has some sort of issue w/ the Galaxy S.
Has anyone found a solution that allows you to restore your apps? Thanks!
EDIT: Whats really strange is if I try to hide titanium, relaunch it, and try and backup. It gives the message "backup already in progress" but for whatever reason it moves onto the next app...so strange
EDIT2: FIXED IT thanks to Joel, the awesome dev behinf titanium. Go into options and change the install method to "AUTO, Indirect" and it should work. Hope this helps others!
AWESOME!!! Thanks!
I also think Joel has one of the best apps for android. Great support and Dev.
I need a little kind help runing this.
When I press any of the batch RUNs I just go back to the previous screen.
I have the latest version, busybox install, rooted.
I can backup individual files, but nothing from the BATCH screen works.

open TB and before doing anything click the menu key.
Now click Preferences, App Installer Mode and change that to Auto INDIRECT, by default it will use Auto, Direct.
Now try to run a batch restore

Still nothing, when I press RUN I just go back to the Backup/Restore screen.
Should I then be looking for a GO or LAUNCH button?
This same thing happens on my G1, so it must be an evident stupid mistake I'm making, but I can't figure out what.

If your on the Vibrant now. you would once you open TB, push the soft key all the way to the left and a menu will come up.
Go into preferences from here.
Ah. had a bad install of Ti Backup.
Reinstalled and works as ordered now.
thanks.

Appreciate your patience and assistance here.
Yes, I've gone to Preferences and made the change your suggested. This is not my problem.
I can not run any batch commands. I can not backup/restore/verify or any of the other choices.
When I press any of the RUN options, I drop back to the Backup/Restore screen and nothing happens.

ah sorry I misunderstood.
Couple questions.
Does the backup/restore batch commands your running show a number to the right indicating how many apps are being restored/backed up?
TB should request Super User permissions when it first launches, but to make sure open Super User and make sure you see TB in the list of allowed applications.
Thanks for your help. Everything works fine now.
See my previous edited post.
Don't recall ever having to reinstall a faulty app before. Still it is something I should have checked earlier.
Since the OPs problem has been sorted, I hope its Ok that I post a problem.
I wanted to do a factory reset to see if it would improve some performance issues.
- DLed Ti
- menu > batch > run "backup all user apps and sys data" > select all > run (all items under backup/restore tab had check, smilie, or smilie with M)
- factory reset
- installed Ti
- menu > batch > run "restore all apps and data" > select all > run
- clicked "install" for each downloaded app (is this normal or should it be automatic?) data was reinstalled automatically
- rebooted
All downloaded apps were restored and settings were restored.
market dl history was not restored, system user data was not restored (browser bookmarks, text, call log etc)
- opened Ti
- menu > batch > run "restore missing apps and all sys data" > select all > run
- reboot
market links are now restored but still no texts, call log, browser bookmarks, wifi keys, bluetooth pairings etc.
I'm great full that Ti made restoring apps so much easier but I know it can restore all sys user data as well. What did miss or do wrong?
Ok so I have an issue where i was flashing the ROM Tranquility for my droid x and it was difficult to get it running but now it seems to be going ok. But now I'm trying to restore all my apps using Titanium and for some reason as soon as i try to restore even one, the phone quick reboots. So why are you posting it in the vibrant subforum? I recommend posting this as a new thread in the droid x, q and a section. Since we're on the wrong carrier with a different device.

I have a problem where I backed up all of my data, verified it successfully then installed the latest Continuum 5.5(updated from 5.4.1) and then tried to restore my system data(Contacts, SMS, etc.) but after the reboot, none of these show up?
If it verified without any errors then how could it just suddenly not show up?
Brilliant, I am glad this post is around because I was having the hardest time trying to figure this one out. Thanks for the info!!

This just helped me with restoring my HTC Sensation! Google is awesome, lol.
"AUTO, Indirect"
didn't do any good...
I'm up to try regular android restore, but will take ages...
I don't see this option "AUTO, indirect" in TitaniumBackup 4.4.0 version, but I have same problem here.
Finally found that "indirect mode". Works great now, thanks !!!!

I have a problem with some restored apps such as Gmail. If I restore app and data the app won't sync properly. It will delete the emails but they still show in unread and when I load Gmail on the PC the emails are still there.
I have found numerous apps to do this.
Has anyone encountered it and solved it? I've tried everything including indirect but all I can do is reinstall the apps and set them up again.

For anybody looking to backup before HTC DevUnlock

I hadn't seen mention of this in the EVO LTE forum, but here's a way to backup everything before the HTCDev unlock that wipes your phone.
I was waiting for some way of doing this since you can't run Titanium Backup before getting root, and getting root (with current HBOOTs) wipes your phone. Found this in the generic Android hacking section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844032
I never knew there was an ADB Backup command. I've posted questions before and nobody mentioned it.
Since the phone prompts for an encryption password, it probably does do a deep copy of all the app settings.
I haven't actually done the restore from this yet - I'll be rooting this weekend then try the restore.
(Also backed up in MyBackup Pro just in case, for the little good that does.)
It's a huge Windows .BAT file that presents a menu of choices. It DOES take a while. Set a path, then choose a backup option.
I'm trying several different backup options under different backup names to see what restores the best.
If this works as advertised, it should save me days of re setting everything up and many rounds of annoyances about apps that no longer remember their settings.
OTOH, If this doesn't work, don't blame me
Dont you still need root to gain access to app data and the system files?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I would assume this uses fastboot root for anything that can't be accessed but fastboot has access to practically everything, there's even a fastboot command to flash splash screens lol
Again, I haven't tried the restore yet, but it looks to me like it requests the system to do it, which asks your permission first, so I'm assuming it gets everything.
I ran it with the phone booted up and it didn't complain. I guess I'll find out when I unlock and try to restore.
I may play with this later, seems like something handy for my guide
Sorry, I'm still too tired to understand what the hell is going on half the time, you're talking about adb and I'm taking about fastboot lol

Wouldn't think the restore would mess anything up, but I'm paranoid as $h1t with this phone.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
Nah its just a couple of image files, the worst thing that could happen is a bad flash that you can easily recover from in recovery
Hmm.
Well restoring a backup that didn't include system data *does* restore the app settings.
Now I'm trying restoring a backup that did include system data (the one marked as "unsafe" in the menu).
I'm hoping it'll restore my home screens, WiFi credentials, etc. The backup with system data took maybe 2 hours.
I'll check the restore in the morning...
(Oh well, either way, now that I'm rooted I can ditch all this and just go with Titanium from now on. Yay.)
Results:
Restoring a backup without system data did get all my app data/settings back.
Restoring a backup that included system data also had the side benefit of restoring the boot screen without the red tamper warning even though I'm S-ON. LOL.
I wonder if modifying a backup file then restoring it could be exploited...
This type of backup also includes all the SD contents. You might want to manage media files yourself instead.
Neither type restored home-screens. In fact, after restoring the one with system data, I had no icons or widgets whatsoever.
Even when I also told MyBackupPro to restore homescreens I got nothing. Oh well.

Very interesting...You could be on to something there with exploiting a backup. May want to drop the lazy panda devs a line and see if it could be used to downgrade the hboot in some way. When you restored the system partition did you lose root?
Sent from my EVO LTE
Nope - I was wondering if that would happen, but it's still rooted & su, busybox, etc are still there.
It restores the screen as a side effect of copying the entire system state. As a restore you get the system state in tact as it was before the phone gets tampered. An interesting exercise would be to see if you can use the back up function to flash a system state with superuser privledges
Gaining root with fastboot...I like it. Are the backups locked to the device or can they be shared and restored on others?
Sent from my EVO LTE
I would assume they aren't but they may have access to back up misc info related to only that phone. I haven't had a chance to poke around with this program yet

Anybody know if it is actually possible to exploit hboot using this adb method or something similar. Has a hboot been exploited vin the past through adb
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
It has been but only on early versions of Android, the odds of an exploit found like that again isn't at all likely. We just like to think out loud
I can't get this working. I run UBT.bat and it just flashes on my screen and closes.

[Q] My phone has went mental - any ideas for a fix?

Boy I'm not having great luck with my hardware atm. My Nexus 7 has got some serious lag issue, probably needing a factory restore, and now my SGS2 is playing up and looking like it might need the same. I'd appreciate the help before I go to that - not sure where I am on backups, I think this problem has been lingering for a while unnoticed, and its possible my scheduled Titanium task hasn't worked in a while because of this.
So let me run through. I was trying to update a few apps in the app store, and I got 'the package file is invalid' errors over and over. I was a little confused, and suddenly I was getting a flickering alert for 'low on application space' that would come and go.
I went into applications to see what my space was and it was fine, 400mb free. But I noticed that all of the apps were reading as zero size. I tried removing one I knew was big, and the free space adjusted by a real amount, but no change to the sizes in the listing. I went thru and uninstalled a bunch just to be sure. Even after this, I could still not install any apps without getting the invalid message.
I decided to restart and wipe the cache, thinking maybe something had gone wrong there. No change. All the installed apps were working ok, though, no problems running things. So, I decide that something minor has corrupted, and that a reflash of the current firmware would maybe do the job (which is a stock XEU build of ICS). I have 'Mobile Odin' and keep the current firmware file on the SD just in case. I of course want to run a backup first, so I fire up Titanium, which fails to do the backup, with an error about something catching fire trying to 'do calculation'. I begin to figure that something worse has happened by this point.
I decide to go ahead with the reflash using Mobile Odin. It seems to load fine, I tell it to wipe the cache and so on. The flash goes fine, and the phone reboots. I expected it to go through the little optimising applications thing it does, and true enough I see this box load up, saying 'start applications' and the spinning wheel. Then, it abruptly closes, and I get my home panel...
But here's where it goes severely wrong - every app I can think of now crashes, displaying the 'unfortunately XXX has stopped'. Boxes and boxes, for basically every app that in any way runs at startup, every widget, even my Swift Key and Swipe keyboards. Yikes! After clearing the huge backlog of boxes, I start trying to open stuff, and it quickly becomes apparent that no app will work, save for those that are physically part of the firmware (such as Settings, Messages, Phone, Contacts, Memo, Camera). Basically, unless its a stock app, it's just dead. My SD apps show up as if they aren't found, with the little grey SD box. I can't even open the Play Store to try redownloading an app.
I'm going to try, once I'm home from work, reflashing the firmware using desktop Odin. But, failing that, I will need a factory restore it would seem. Basically, I'm looking help either fixing the problem without a factory restore, or a way to back up my data (messages and app data) in case my Titanium Backups are old or broken.
Thanks :/
Edit: When I do a *#1234#, my CSC comes up as 'Unknown'. Would this cause these issues?

Flash a CF root kernel using desktop Odin, reboot into CWM via hard keys vol+ home and power. Find fix permissions, run it, reboot, hopefully work...
Most apps that aren't granted the right permissions that allow them to fulfil there main task will usually end up in a FC.

Unsure. Most likely not. It would be like running 2 kernels at once... just wouldnt work. Wouldn't risk it. Could hard brick the phone.

4. Disable System apps you don't need/use
- Goto Settings - Apps - All - Select the app you want to disable, select FORCE STOP, then DISABLE.
Repeat the step for each app
- Alternatively you can use titanium backup pro to freeze those apps

Thanks for that, but I'm sorry, what? I seem to be missing something - you've answered something that seems to be an entirely different problem! I can't even RUN an explorer let alone grant it root - so I can't reach the ODEXes, which aren't the reason for the FCs anyway.
This 'fix permissions' sounds like a good plan, I just need to know my best method for getting CWM onto the phone given it's state. I think I can use the update.zip method, but I may have to just wait until I can get to a machine capable of running Odin for me, to flash the CF kernel.

Ok.
Let me tell you some things you need to know
1. Fix permissions only has much effect on system apps, only if their permission is broken
2. Flashing a new Kernel will never fix many FC
3. Have you booted to recovery and wipe cache? If after doing this and your problem still persist, then you might have perform a Factory Data Reset.
4. Flashing a new firmware via Odin will not dramatically stop Force close errors. You will still need a factory reset to fix that.

I've tried wiping cache in recovery, yes. The only apps that run are the system ones. I can't explain why permissions may have been broken on the other apps, but it may be the case, so I'd like to try it. And, it was a flash via (Mobile) Odin CAUSED the FCs, so I don't know if that's true. Regardless, I'm heading home now, I can try flashing the CWM and run the fix permissions, and otherwise I need to figure out a backup solution before I factory restore.
I don't mean this wrong, but I'd prefer you don't just throw generic (yet good for general faults) advice if you don't have personal knowledge of the particular problem. It could be misleading.

You know my aim wasn't to mislead you but to help. I actually missed somethings in your Original post like "Every apps now doesn't work" etc
Because the only apps that run now are the system apps proves that there is something wrong in the /data partition, a location where all user apps, settings etc are stored.
Anyway, it's always very good to try all other means possible before factory reset.

Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to offend you or have a go. I appreciate all the help about to try flashing the rooted CWM kernel, to try the permissions fix. If that doesn't work, I need to figure out some way of doing a backup of sorts, before I do a restore :crying:
UPDATE: After flashing the CF-Kernel to access CWM, I'm getting a message I'm unfamiliar with "The System UIDs are inconsistent" yadda yadda factory reset. I'm currently 'fixing permissions' It looks like it's stalled, but it may just take a while. I have a lot of apps. Anyone understand the UIDs message in my context?
Update 2: Had to factory restore, but was able to restore almost everything with no problems from a CWM nandroid backup. Thanks for the help.

The problem is this is the first time I would do it.... I have read guides on other threads but I am not still very sure how to do it or even if it would solve it.
So when I turn the wifi on, besides having lost all of my stored wifi profiles, it doesnt scan, and turns off automatically. Sometimes I even get a wifi error.
I have an Xperia Ray, rooted, I restored to factory settings but that didnt help....I rolled back to a backup I had with titanium backup and everything came back the way it was except the wifi.....wifi hotspoting works by the way.
If someone would please be so gentle to tell me what way to go, that would be a charm; I am half decent with Androids, and above Standard with Windows...
Thanks!

You could try to restore the wpa file. Extract it from a stock or custom rom and push it to your device, it should restore the default settings. Maybe it's cached somewhere.

Hey!
Thanks for the reply!
That is a good idea indeed though I have no idea how to go about it......

[Q] AT&T GS3 No data connection, APN's wont save.

I have a AT&T GS3 running Packman Rom, one day i was updating my rom data was working fine and after i flashed the update i had no data connection, so i restored from a back up before the rom update and same thing no data, so i restored my phone with ODIN using the default ROM, still no data. So i restored from the backup again and found out i had no APN's in the APN settings area. So i tried restoring defaults, nothing happens it says "defaults restored" or something along those lines and nothing shows up, when i try setting my own APN with the right stuff and i save still nothing there. Any ideas on how to fix? I have downloaded some apps to manage the APN's but they don't work on android 4.0 +.
I know this is the wrong section but i cant find the right one, link anyone?
