Got out of boot loop but what should I do next? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello good people,
So basically I got into a boot loop on my S3 (phone froze, took out battery because nothing else was reacting and came back to a boot loop) and decided to clear Dalvik cache in cwm recovery and it seemed to work, the phone restarted and reconfigured my apps but got stuck on a screen saying something like "preparings apps for use" or something to the sort but after a second of that it would reboot again and the same process would repeat. So I hit the home button during one of those "prepare" screens and my phone booted up just fine.
Now my question is: what should I do now? The phone works but I have no clue why it soft-bricked on me. And if it will even restart next time? Should I install a new ROM or upgrade?
If so how can I keep or backup my game/sms/contact etc. data? I only used Odin before so I don't really know how this works. Also, could I just write a new ROM on top of mine? Would that keep my data on the phone or wipe it all?

Your phone is rooted? If isn't, root your phone.
Do a nandroid backup and after this: wipe data+wipe cache+wipe dalvik cache.
After first boot, install Titanium Backup and recover your app with data, sms and contacts from nandroid backup that you have done before wiping.

It is normal for it to freeze or throw up fc's when preparing/optimizing apps and needing a few reboots to clear it.
If its working fine now you could not worry about it but as broken920 do a nandroid. If you wanted to go the full hog do a complete install. It is also best to wipe cache and dalvik cache at the same time. This might be why it frooze when preparing apps.

[Q] Can't remove installed software and can't use odin

Ok so I'm fairly new to the rooting scene, and these forums, but so far everything has been pretty good, except for one small problem. I installed a custom boot logo, and afterwards my phone was lagging a bit. I contacted the boot logo programmer, with no response, so I decided to wipe my system and use the backup from right before I installed the custom boot logo. Unfortunately, the boot logo has not changed, and my phone 'fails' whenever I try to flash something from Odin. Anyone know what to do in this situation.
If you want to do a full wipe of you device, cos it sounds like tha boot logo is corrupt, then boot to recovery and wipe cache partition and dalvik cache.then go to "storage and mounts" and format system, data and cache.Select "Go Back" and factory reset your phone and reboot. If it doesnt go past the boot logo after 1min then pull the battery, put it back in and turn it back on.Its a pain in the arse but it will completely clean up your device and if you where rooted you will need to probably reroot but berfore hand plug in your phone to your PC so it gets recognized again.
EDIT:Just incase, first of all download titanium backup from the market and backup your apps!!!!

You need to wipe usb storage, sd card, then put phone in download mode, flash stock ROM using Odin. You need to fully wipe everything.

I've trying reflashing the stock ROM and kernel; however, it gives me a FAIL and says can't open the serial (COM) port.
I have solved the problem by closing Samsung Kies and wiping the system, thanks for all the help offered.

I kinda messed up :P

Hello guys!
Today i installed ClockworkMod Touch recovery and installed SuperNexus 2.0 Build 4 Rom , the whole process took less than 5 minutes. But before i installed SuperNexus i did a "Nandroid?" backup which went fine and took lots of space xD Anyway i proceeded with SuperNexus and it installed fine and played with the rom for a few hours ... i decided to restore the backup so my whatsapp and all that stuff comes back .. i didnt know that it'll restore system too! Ofcourse the phone went on a bootloop so i went to CWM and wiped data/factory reset and the phone booted with Stock 4.1.2 and the phone is kinda slow at the first boot ... now i dont really know what to do :/ The nandroid backup is large and im afraid the SuperNexus rom wont fit and it'll cause errors n all xD Im really stuck at this point , should i repeat installing SuperNexus?
EDIT: I cleared 4.6GB of space , what to do next?
the backup restore shouldn't have caused a bootloop, that's weird.
it restores everything - system and data. so if you want to keep the data when switching ROMs, use Titanium backup or something if the sort. try restoring again. if it fails, try a custom restore of /data

Im not sure if its a bootloop , it keeps restarting boot animation after 1min , i fixed it anyway by wipe data/factory reset option thru recovery and its on stock now booting fine , Shall i flash SuperNexus again normally ? Other than wipe data/factory reset is there anything else to do ?
I mean, if you don't care about your data being lost - then sure
Yeah no probs , contacts on sim and pic's and movies on sd card , Ill just have to redownload my games and all Ill charge my phone then proceed , thanks One more question. Since I installed SuperNexus before does it have system files that I need to delete? Or wipe data/factory reset will cover it?

no, a data wipe will do.
Success Thanks for the help xD I learned a lesson Ill use titanium backup from now on

Phone won't boot past Samsung Screen

So I just restarted my phone after doing nothing particular and it just will not boot. It gets to the Samsung screen with the Unlocked Lock that says 'Custom' and it just freezes there. I pulled the battery and boot again, nothing. I booted into recovery and wiped it all and re-flashed the bebloated ROM, still won't boot. Anyone have any other suggestions???

sounds stupid, but try whiping it like 2-3 times in a row and then reboot
Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259 and let us know. I have the very same issue with my phone but ended up giving up and getting verizon to replace it but would really like to know if this works.

Take out the SD card and try a reboot...if that doesn't work.....its odin time.
did you pull the battery for 10 seconds and retry?

Hey guys, sorry it took so long for me to get back. After 3 wipes I was able to get everything back to stable and it has not locked up like that again. Thanks for all your suggestions, I may need them again someday haha.
damn
basically have the same problem but i have a stock rooted backup in twrp... (which i have to restore once a day).... every time the phone dies or or battery comes out, there no way of starting without wipe and restore, and even then it doesn't let me boot into twrp until a few tries also once in a while my twrp asks for a password, which ive never put on.. so anyways if theere are any new suggestions id be happy to try them out

[Resolved] Stuck on boot logo after "android.process" crash

Hi,
I really don't understand what just happened with my Galaxy S2. It was on and well, then crashed for no reason and displayed two error messages in a loop: "Falcon Pro has stopped unexpectedly" (that's my Twitter client) and "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly". I had not even the time to click on "OK" before the other message appeared and so on, so I forced the reboot by pressing the power button.
Now the phone is stuck on the "S2" logo when booting.
I tried wiping the parition cache, it did nothing.
I have Android 4.0.something, Samsung/Bouygues original rom with Siyah kernel.
What can I do (without losing all my data if possible)?
Thank you...

Do you still have the original rom zip on your sd card? If you do, you could try a dirty flash of it on top of your current setup. Wipe cache/dalvik cache and then flash the rom zip. Seeing as you're having FC's, you could also fix permissions in recovery, can't hurt.
Edit: Note, that's attempting to not wipe your data. If that doesn't work you'll likely have to factory reset from recovery.

No, I didn't have any rom on my card...
I tried to wipe dalvik, fix permission, wipe cache and reboot but the problem was not fixed.
So I said goodbye to my data, did a factory reset and that worked. Phew!
Thank you

[Q] Help needed

Hi!
I have a problem with my LG Optimus 3D (P920). Installed the JellycreamV3 and it went good, untill everything was complete and I restarted the phone as instructed. Now my phone stucks at startup logo. Its been like that for hours but nothing happends? I have tried to restarted it several times without any resaults. Please help me. Its my first attempt to install new android version.
Perhaps your install was bad, try reinstalling it, or maybe you didn't clear the cache, system, data?
Sent from my LG-LS980 using xda app-developers app
- Boot into Recovery again
- Wipe data/cache and go to "Advanced" and wipe Dalvik (yes, this will delete everthing, but you don't exactly have a choice)
Reboot. If it's still hanging
- Boot into Recovery again
- Re-flash ROM
And BTW, didn't you make a backup of your original ROM? If not, well.. you won't go any places fast. Another tip is to go to the thread where you downloaded the ROM and ask for help there. People there have flashed the ROM, and some may have had the same issue as you have now.
I try to go into recover-mode but it just starts up and get stuck on the logo:S I did a backup but no matter how i press the buttons to access the recover-mode the phone just starts up and the LG logo comes up. Then its stuck there
