Bricked HTC DNA - Data recovery - URGENT - HTC Droid DNA

Hi everyone,
First time post and I apologize for the extreme newbie question / dead horse thread. I was installing an update on my HTC DNA and the battery ran out. I'm assuming this bricked it.
Unfortunately, it had a video I recorded of me proposing to my fiance. All I want is the data recovered, and the phone can burn for all I care.
I sent it to mobiletechvideos and they said they couldn't retrieve the data off the chip. Does anyone know of another service or option I may have? Phone is completely dead at the moment.
Thanks in advance.

From the Ebay listing:
"There is 99% chance data will be lost on HTC phones."
I'm not sure this is the service for me. Does the problem sound like a firmware issue to you or hardware?

If you contact the service with a specific request to save the data, they may be able to help. I'm not positive, but I think JTAG is used to force power to the board. Then they run an ruu which is probably where the data loss would occur. They might be able to use JTAG to get to bootloader/recovery, and maybe rescue data from there?

That would be amazing. I messaged them on ebay, hopefully they respond and are as creative as you are with ways to try to salvage the situation. Thanks again !

They said they need to replace the whole "logic board." They quoted me $150, and they could send back the phone and the original chip. They said the chip is corrupt?
Any ideas based on that info?

if you have a T mobile US HD2, Its dead, bad radio Flash,
Next time read the stickies, and always ask befre doing anything
There is NO WAY you can revive your phone EXCEPT JTAG,
find out a local shop that can do it for you,
ELSE
TRY HTC warranty,
Best regds
HTC Warranty wont cover it, you jail-broke the phone all warranties are then void.

If you cannot even get into the bootloader, and JTAG is the only hope, send it to HTC for repairs. They most likely will not check under these circumstances, and probably just replace the motherboard. That seems to be the experience of others in this forum who have bricked their phones in a similar fashion and sent it to an HTC repair center.

its a radio brick, htc wont know its been hspl'd unless they jtag it back to life, which they probably wont.....
good chance of a warranty replacement, its not ethical but hey... you would do the same right? I know I would.....

except they can't check it, because to get it to start will require jtag ing it, which will reset the spl, so no evidence. (not to mention they won't go that far in a service center, they'll see it's dead, and either swap out the board or send out a refurb, the dead board will go to a different center to be reprocessed, by which time you will have your replacement.

Actually sorry read this:
So JTAG gives you the ability to test a:
Device and access internal scan
Board and program devices
System and verify assembly of boards to daughter cards, multichip modules (MCMs) and to other boards on the backplane
If you would like to get started implementing boundary scan using PC-based tools, our customers find success combining the following four elements
So it will give you the information of the spl without resetting it automatically. For the spl to be reset the engineer would have to reset it using the JTAG system. It dosnt automatically reset the spl like you said so they could see if it was hspl'd.
dude i just bricked my phone a month ago for Tmobile USA
my phone was dead no LED nothing no usb connectiong, had a tmobile store try batterys diff chargers diff usb nothing worked
simple answer: exchange it while you can, they cant tell u did HSPL or anything. I got my replacement and to be sure i wasn't charged i called them and they said everything is fine.
I told them i left the phone charging over night i woke up and it was dead.
They did try to catch me in a lie when they asked when this happend i told them i dont remember sometime last week. They can see when your phone was last used so make sure you know when you bricked it and know when it stoped working completley

yes jtag will allow you to read that info,,,,,, on a chip that has that info in place. if its been corrupted, as would be suggested by the lack of any bootloader or response of any kind, it's safe to assume they aren't going to take a bit by bit dump and try to reconstruct any unaffected bits of data in the hope it will be the few tiny bits that differentiate spl from hspl(the spl code is probably almost identical to the hspl code). that's a task for a forensic data analyst, not a 9 to 5 returns bench tech.

Thanks Samsamuel for clearing stating the situation. It verifies the experience of others who have returned their HD2s after bricking them. It would be very sad for the OP if he feared to send his HD2 back to HTC for repairs and had no shops nearby that could do the work.

[Q] Getting a replacement RAZR in India?

Hi guys,
I live in India and I wanted to get some information on getting a replacement for my RAZR. I have quite dissatisfied with the performance of this device. It has been giving me issues which are not ROM related(lag, reboots, random update failures). They simply persist despite my efforts of changing the ROM to remove them.
These issues mostly occur randomly so it's quite hard for me to actually prove to someone that I am experiencing them.
So I don't wanna go through all the Motorola Service Center BS for getting a replacement, as they will most likely tell me that I am using my phone wrong and slam the door in my face(pure speculation on my part, but then this does happen in India).
Can someone tell me an easy way to get a replacement through Motorola? Doesn't have to be pertaining to my issue. I can easily soft-brick my device(and restore it, if need be) and all, so if someone has any information, please do share.
Alternatively, if I do have to go to a service center, will they check a soft-bricked device for previous flashing attempts or will they simply declare it non-functional and replace it?

Leave it at Motorola services and you'll feel good. If it's defecrtive you'll get a replacement. While your razr is at moto services, look for online chanels on the internet and ask for help. Look for motorola india in facebook and talk 2 moto there too.
I got nine replaced this way
Wish you luck

Thanks for the input. Well in India it doesn't exactly work that way. As far as I know you have to go to a service center and prove to them that your device is faulty. After that they diagnose the device and if they find the problem irreparable they replace the product reluctantly. So just wanted to make sure that I'll get a replacement and not some service center BS saying I'm doing it wrong.

Can any Indian RAZR user comment on this?
From my experience you will not get replacement until your cell is fully unresponsive first they will try to flash ur phone if it is not work than u r lucky u will get replacement i have 1 idea but its vry risky if u want competely brick ur device without dropping our putting into water you can try my method for this u will need a pc with fornt usb available open your pc just cross connect front usb cable thats it try ur pendrive first diffidently it will damage inside chip than u can try ur cell it will done the same this i have done this before to get the replacement for my MOTO DEFY. Hope this will help you.
Well I'm definitely not gonna try a full hard brick. But still thanks for the input. I'll see what I can do. I'll try Delhi first during my vacations and then Hyderabad. If that doesn't work, then well I guess I'm pretty much stuck.
A friend with a defy plus got his motherboard replaced within warranty after he bricked his phone trying to flash some roms. I'm not saying this would be the case with you as well but you would never know till you go to the service centre.
Maybe Off topic: I have an Indian XT910 and ever since i have updated to 2.3.6 i have problems receiving text messages. everything else works just fine. This is one of the most niggling issues. When i contacted the motorola call center they told me to go to an authorized service centre and get my phone downgraded to the previous version(2.3.4-not sure if there is any such version). This is an active discussion on the official motorola forum as well but the issue has not been solved.
Was wondering if any of you guys have had the same issue and were able to solve it?
(Please let me know if i need to start a new thread for this)

The only problem with the RAZR is that first they'll try flashing back the original firmware which won't repair my issue, but will make them feel that it works just fine. That's why I was wondering if there was another way. I can't hard brick the phone so no matter what I do, a fastboot flash will restore it back to working condition anyways.
I was thinking about doing this, use Bootstrap to format data, cache, system and emmc partitions and go to the store complaining that the phone fails to boot after an update which I get. They will most likely try doing a data wipe from the built in recovery which will fail due to absence of an actual android system partition. Also all traces of Bootstrap will be removed because of the system partition not containing any data anymore. After this I'll basically tell them that this happens every time I try to update the phone. So maybe they might look past the fact that it's a simple software issue. I dunno if it'll work though.
Also one more thing, do the store guys give a damn about the user's wants, like for example if the user wants a new phone instead of a motherboard replacement, do they actually consider that? Because I'm gonna be in Delhi for a few days only so won't really have the time to get a motherboard replacement done because that'll take more than just a few days(and I really want an entirely new RAZR, I feel cheated with my current one)
And lastly, no I haven't had any of the issues you've mentioned. My 2.3.6 runs fine in that aspect. Just the random lag, and reboots which are killing me.

Already did. After I described the issue he told me to do a factory reset from the Motorola Recovery(which I've tried multiple times before. DOES NOT WORK). I told that it doesn't work. Then he said that he cannot help me further on the phone and I would have to go to a Motorola Service Center to get my phone checked for issues. He said nothing about a replacement. I have emailed Motorola customer care about the same. They haven't replied yet. WTF is wrong with Motorola Customer care!

Bricked Note 3

I recently tried to install a custom ROM into the boot slot on my phone. I had installed safestrap but forgot to change Slots when I installed the new ROM. Needless to say this didn't go well. After chatting online with Samsung and not being able to fix, the tech gave me an RMA and shipping label, all paid for by Samsung. He was aware of what I had tried to do and told me they may have to charge me. My hats are off to Samsung. They fixed my phone by re-installing the original software; shipped it back to me 2nd day air; and didn't charge me anything. That is customer service like you don't find much anymore.
Thanks Again to Samsung,
I thought this might help someone else who might try to go to the provider.

A bricked phone does the same as a real brick...a paperweight. That is what the meaning of bricked is. A lot of people confuse not booting with bricked. This is either called soft-bricked or sponged (like that TV brick made of sponge). But I know you wanted to know what the OP's device was doing when he performed this procedure...just wanted to stick in the Public Service Announcement.
Just FYI to anyone else who gets 'stuck' somewhere like this and can't figure out how to fix their phone.
You can take it to best buy at the Samsung center in the middle of the store and they will do the same thing as OP, you just won't have to send it back and be without a phone. They will do it right in front of you.
So is it better to contact Samsung instead of Verizon? I also hard bricked (no power, no lights no nothing) and Verizon is sending me a replacement. Buts its a "certified like new replacement". I'd rather keep my phone if it can be fixed.
Or you can follow the tutorial I made here in the general section and fix it yourself.

That phone's a complete brick. No power, no lights, no nothing.
Tried every button combination possible including sd/sim card and charger in/out combo. No go.
Was just curious if following up with samsung for warranty made more sense than verizon. In hopes of getting a new device instead of "Certified Like New Replacement "

Can I recover my data from a short circuited motherboard?

Dear, my galaxy s2 is dead, please, help me, I need recover it, mainly because my unsaved data. It began discharging even connected to the charger, some days after it reboot while charging and has blocked in the samsung logo. I have removed the battery and put it again, it blocked in the samsung logo (I not pushed the power button)... I have removed the battery again and DEAD, no more, nothing...
There is any way of I get my data (pictures, phone contacts, phone calendar, etc.) from motherboard?
Details about the short circuit, with pictures, can be seen in the topic "Insoluble short circuit samsung galaxy s2" at GSM-Forum..
I don't know what I can do. :crying:
Please, help me!
If your device is totally dead (no download mode/recovery), I think the easiest (but not cheapest) way is to buy another S2 (of the same variant), replace its mainboard with yours and pray that the mainboard isn't the broken part itself (but I think it is). I often changed parts of my S2 and I can say it is very easy to open and change mainboard.
But i hope that there will be some other suggestions from more experienced users...

Well, maybe you can try some recovery app first. I know a good one called Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery. But there is no guarantee. when your data is lost, the sector used to save data is marked as available. You can not see the data. But the data is still there until new data overwritten the old one.
If the app doesn't work. I am afraid you have to send it to professional lab. And it will be expensive. Anyway, good luck.

You could find some at the internet, and send your phone to them for evaluation, if it still can be recovered, you are lucky. If not, they will return the device to you and won't charge any fees.

Could you indicate one for me?

Samsung Galaxy S3 is not turning on.

Hello experts,
I have Samsung Galaxy S3, I was using messenger then it hanged up and then I restarted my mobile by pressing and holding the power switch. Then Galaxy S3 logo appeared after restart and again hanged up. Then I again restarted the phone, again at the same point it hanged up i.e. at the logo of Galaxy S3. Then I pulled out battery and reinsert it but after this it never started again not even blinked once. I have also checked on another battery.
I went to the mobile repairing shop then he said CMC chip is dead so its circuit will be replaced. Then I went another shop, he said I will flash the device but I don't guarantee about the data (stored in phone storage). I said him that it is not turning on then how will you flash it. He said I will do it yet.
Now, tell me experts that what should I do to get my phone data back? What should I do that it just turned on for some minutes so that I could take my data to SD card. My data is much important. Also tell me how did the shopkeeper say that he will flash the phone even it is not turning on anyhow.
Thank you.

If it's super important, you would've backed it up, right? Everyone I know backups their important data at least 2 times
The other shopkeeper could use a jtag to force the device into download mode (helped me to unbrick a hard bricked s4).
My 2 seconds of Googling brought me to this link.
That's what I'd assume they'd do (that's what I'd do if I was them).
As for the first one, they might be correct, or not. My strongest recommendation is to try the jtag method and if that doesn't work, I will be really surprised if they actually replace the CMC. Usually what they do is just replace the motherboard which you can do at home (there are plenty of motherboards on ebay) however, it's cheaper but your data chips would need to be transfered over to the new motherboard, which is just better to go with the CMC replacement (if they don't replace your mobo, your data is fine, if they do, it's gone with the mobo).
As for the second option regarding your data, unfortunately it's correct. However, it they get into download mode, they can flash a recovery (different partition, meaning your /data partition is safe) like twrp which they can use to make a nandroid backup and then after extracting the backup, flash new rom. Then you can restore the different apps/settings from the twrp backup file (there are plenty of tutorials on the net).
Good luck! If I helped, hit the "thanks" button

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I am afraid, if I post my issue under that running thread then how would I get answer because that thread has already more than 200 pages. And if you are asking me to read the issue, obviously you are also a busiest person having life issues and others, you can't also read that thread and want to resolve the issue ASAP. Pardon me if I get wrong as my English is not much good.
Hi, ramiabouzahra
Thanks for your reply. Here is what I understand from your reply, I give answer below step by step.

Unfortunately, I didn't because I was thinking that mobile is working fine, I will backup after a week or two but before I do this, my mobile gone dead

What I understand from this, the shopkeeper who is asking me to bring life to the phone, would use jtag? What is jtag and how can I do it at home and what thing like cables, etc do I need for this. Further what I understand, is that by using jtag, the device is forced to go into download mode. Right?
My 2 seconds of Googling brought me to this link.

What I understand from the given link, it is a method of flashing the device. Right? By the way, do you think that the mobile which is not turning on anyhow even by trying all methods, it will turn on by flashing the device? But again, as I read the thread that data can be gone. Again, no safety for data.

You recommend me to use jtag method? OK. And what is CMC? What does it stand for? How they replace it? Any tutorial?

Yeah, I can do this at home as I am aware of little bit electronics. Can you tell me which is suited for my Galaxy S3 on EBAY? Can you give the link so that I could buy? And I hope, I would able to transfer chips on the new mobo, just locate the chip for me which is to be transferred. And further I don't understand what do you mean by the line "which is just better to go with the CMC replacement (if they don't replace your mobo, your data is fine, if they do, it's gone with the mobo"

Here the second option you mean, flashing the rom? you said in the bracket the "data partition is safe" means in this method, I can safe my data? OK, I read about twrp as per my understanding, it can get my data back? Right?
Thank you for answering me, I am a dumb. Thanks for tolerating me.

What jtag is etc can be checked out in the link below. What cables you need depend on specifically your device (it might be s3, but there are different variants of the s3).
And yes, normally that would mean that it would be forced into download mode

Regarding the jtag, you can check out this great forum question and answer Keep in mind that jtag doesn't always need a controller, in my case (s4 not s3), I had to create a micro usb connector with a resistor on one of the ends and plug it into the device for it to work again
You recommend me to use jtag method? OK. And what is CMC? What does it stand for? How they replace it? Any tutorial?

I don't really know what CMC is, maybe the guy meant SMC? SMC is a common abbreviation used in circuit board repair and stands for System Management Controller so in one word or another, a chip (correct me if I am wrong, I am not super educated in the circuit board area).
I do recommend you use the jtag method since if it doesn't work, at least you can rest a sure you've tried multiple ways to revive it and not sit and wonder after the board repair is complete if there was a more efficient way to solve the issue.

Are you sure you can do it at home? It isn't normal solder, it's more of a ballpoint solder requiring to heat up the board to let the solder flow and then extract the nand chips. I cannot give you link since I don't know specifically what phone you have (you stated s3, but there are plenty of s3 variants such as the s3 lte etc all with different internals).
What I meant by that line is that since the data chips are on the motherboard, replacing the motherboard means losing your data. If they don't replace your motherboard (mobo), your data is intact/fine .
Here the second option you mean, flashing the rom? you said in the bracket the "data partition is safe" means in this method, I can safe my data? OK, I read about twrp as per my understanding, it can get my data back? Right?

Yep, with twrp you can create a backup and extract from that backup apps and whatnot. So technically, your data is safe (you will wipe the phone, but you'll have a backup ). If it's photos that are the issue, you can hope that your sync was on and that you had Google Photos set up (automatically backs up your gallery).
