Help with CWM update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Just rooted i9300 following this procedure
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...wm5-5-t1695238
and here is says " istalled A custom CWM 5.5" o.k.
I decided to upgrade the CWM to latest version but always ends with error. Tried also with rom manager just to update ClockworkMod Recovery to 6.0.5.0 but also without success.
Please be so kind and direct me to right path.
Do I even have to bother with this if i want to instal latest stable 4.x Cyanogen mod ? ( what instructions to follow to accomplish this goal.)
Thank you for your time
Aaex

You need latest recovery to flash anything. Use Odin to flash philz recovery, follow the instructions exactly.

Thank you for the hint. Will try to follow as suggested.
And
Maybe , ( my opinion only) not everyone is capable of understanding and following extremely fast development and changes in the Android world, ...no matter how well some things are covered.
pls let me add for our future guests a nice guide how to for i9300 about this topic

newbie question

ok so i rooted my s2 , then i put the stock kernel back in .
is there a guide to show me what i have to do next ,because if i try putting my phone into download mode and try to back up the current rom or even try to install the miui rom .
all i get is a error saying failed to verify etc
can someone direct me to a guide showing me how to prep the s2 after rooting it so that i can change the rom on it .i have tried to find something showing me but cant seem to find a detailed guide
thanks in advance
You do not use download mode and Odin for flashing roms your lucky you haven't bricked it.
To flash a rom you need clockwork recovery so you need to flash a kernel that has clockwork embedded the reboot to recovery backup wipe and flash new rom
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
All the specific rom threads have detailed step-by-step instructions in their own threads. Which one are you trying to install?
Ok maybe this is the right place to ask another newbie question. I rooted my phone with hellcats' kernel (KF1). So now can I install any ROM. The reason I ask is coz I want to flash Litening ROM XXKG3 (i currently have stock ROM 2.3.3) and am confused if I need to have kernel KG3 in order to do so. Thanks in advance.

[Q] Need Urgent Help - soft bricked galaxy note gtn7000

Hi All..
Im pretty much a noob..last week i decided to install cyanogenmod on my phone.Im using international version of Galaxy Note GTN7000.
I saw there was a windows installer on cm website..but wanted to make a backup of my current rom..
i rooted my phone using kingo android root..installed rom manager..flashed latest clockworkmod recovery..
but on booting into recovery,i found stock recovery was being forced..i read somewhere it was because of unlocked bootloader..
on cyanogenmod wiki page,i found installation of clockworkmod recov using heimdall..everything went fine ...blue progress bar was shown in the download mode...and when i rebooted into recovery mode i saw the first danger sign..there was a yellow triangle beneath galaxy note logo..
and then it booted into clockworkmod recovery 5.8..Foolishly i did a system backup..rebooted...surprised to find phone went into black screen after displaying a note logo with yellow triangle beneath..tried recovery from clockworkmod without hope but that didnt work as expected...
This is the situation..All i need now is to install cyanogenmod 10.1.3 stable on my device..i dont want a custom rom backup anymore..
'but i saw in forums i will need to flash a custom rom from sammobile...
All help will be appreciated.Pleasen help..

At first flash a Samsung firmware through Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
I recommend you not using Rom Manager. Have a look at PhilZ's thread for having a safe kernel and custom recovery to be able to backup and flash what you want.
doubt
Can i flash stock rom from sammobile
and go for cyanogenmod windows installer without flashing philz kernel

I really don't like this CM installer... Toolkits won't help you in case of trouble.
Download a firmware from SamMobile and flash it with Odin then you will be able to install PhilZ and your CM rom (or another one )

Yes you can but the most important thing on N7000 is to have a SAFE kernel before wiping or flashing from recovery. (more details in the N7100 sections)
Here are the general instructions to flash a new custom rom:
1. Having root and a working custom recovery (updated)
2. Boot into recovery mode (VOL DOWN + POWER + HOME) then VOL UP to accept the warning.
3. Make a Nandroid backup and backup your EFS.
4. Full wipe: wipe data (factory reset), cache, dalvik and system. Recoveries are different. You may need to go to another menu to format the system partition.
5. Flash rom
6. Flash Gapps
7. Reboot normally

ALL - via android consule, via odin, and i dont know about other method. with all other devices i had NO problem at all and i flashed many roms before. its the fors time something like that happened to me.
Try this with Odin: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9300/philz_touch_6.25.0-i9300.tar.md5 Put it at "PDA". What error gives you Odin ? Is the phone rooted ? Have you tried installing with CWM Manager from playStore ? Also, try TWRP Manager app, as I believe it does not require root to install the recovery. After TWRP is installed, download the CWM zip and flash it. Ypour friend is running stock ROM, right ?
If you're Rooted then download and install "ROM Manager" From Play Store and that'll guide you through installing the latest CWM for your device. This is the safest method i know.

Android wont boot up after CWM

Hello. I have galaxy S2, and I wanted to install CWM. I installed it (CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100) with odin with auto reboot unchecked and after that it doesn't boot up. It can go to odin and CWM modes, but the android doesn't launch. I did a recovery to phone storage, but still I cant launch the phone... Can anyone help me?
Flash a compatible kernel to your installed rom via recovery. Or you can flash an insecure kernel via Odin.
Simple cwm flashing won't boot up your phone.

Would you mind explaining how to flash a compatible kernel to my phone via recovery? Also I didn't install any rom just cwm. And where should I get a proper kernel to my android? Sorry for dumb questions, but I'm not experienced enough as you see...

Well, there are 3 kernels which are quite popular here which have their depth range till kitkat roms.. A simple search on xda for them will lead you to the respective threads.
1. Gustavo's
2. Dorimanx
3. Apolo
If you want a KK rom then download a KK compatible kernel mentioned in the op for those threads, put that on external sdcard and boot to recovery. There you can flash the Kernel file. As you don't have a rom on your phone it would be better if you download a rom and gapps package too and flash them. After flashing a kernel, reboot to recovery and then flash rom and gapps.
If it's difficult for you to put those files on sdcard, you can flash a stock rom via Odin, flash a kernel e.g. philz, apolo, hirox via Odin. Search for these keywords here on xda. Once you have a working kernel and rom, you can download a custom rom and gapps, put it on your phone and follow the procedure which I mentioned first.
If my steps are still confusing to you then you require to search for these terminologies here on xda, read and understand them carefully and then proceed.
You didn't mention what OS/Firmware was on your phone before you started.....this is VERY important to know as it will decide what you can / cannot flash.....
Custom kernels are OS version dependent.....some will only work with ICS, others will only work with JB.....some are exclusively for KK.
You need to check this.....
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right

well I couldn't check cause it couldn't boot up, unless there's another way... But whatever I managed to write 4.4.2 Kitkat on my S2 and there's alot missing feature's like, I cant organise my program menu, I cant add many widgets that I had used in my previous android, there are no notes, phone file explorer and other what is irritating... Maybe there's some another pack that I missed when installing or what?

How to install TWRP straight from Samsung's default Recovery option?

Hi,
I have the i9100 device. I just flashed Samsung's default Stock ROM on it, using ODIN and it is booting.
I want to know how to install root and then TWRP on this now?
The problem is, TWRP is only releasing an IMAGE file and not a zip or a tar file.
How do I flash this IMAGE into my recovery partition? What is the recommended way of doing it. None of these tutorials are explaining this to me.
Do I have to install CWM first? I am confused. If you can give me a step-by-step overview of what to do, that would be great.
Thanks

- Install in stock-recovery philz cwm 6 Kernel (root).zip (in apply Update)
- make a Backup
- update to kk compatible Recovery Like cwm 6.0.4.7.zip
- with kk compatible Flash latest unofficial cm 11 20161222.zip by zjq985063714 together with recovery-the.gangster-IsoRec-TWRP-3.0.2-1.zip.
- in twrp recovery Flash lanchons repit Tool which ist a zip-file. Use 1 GB vor System 4 GB for Data.
Now you are able to flash any rom up to Nougat.
If you would have searched enough you would have found all this in the Forum.

Hi,
What I am planning to do tomorrow is
a) Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip - this gives me root and CWM recovery
b) Then go into CWM recovery, and flash the IsoRec_TWRP_3.0.0-0_i9100.zip - Will this work?
c) Then I go to TWRP recovery, and then install REPIT, then CM ROM, and then Gapps-pico.
- How this deviates from your quote is;
a) Why do I need the philz cwm 6 Kernel (root).zip ? Is this a pre-req for CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip ?
b) Why flash the cm 11 20161222.zip if I am going with the latest CM 12+ later?
Please clarify... thanks.

Hi zetret
I prefer philz because it is a save kernel (can be done in many other ways like yours)
For flashing twrp3 you need isorec kernel otherwise twrp will not show up.
That's why I use cm11 which has isorec kernel.
And I can there also use triangle away ( doesn't work on latest builds).
and because large roms like cm 13/14 and I think cm12 with large gapps cannot be installed right away because installation will get stuck.
that's why I install cm11 as step in between to increase partitions first.
You do not have to boot cm11 - boot just twrp to continue.
There are many ways to do all this (could flash isorec kernel.....)
to me it's a simple and clean way without using pc

Hi dhrubaz
Please use google search as i mentioned the proper file-names for this purpose.
(I would also have to search).
For philz cwm6 i9100 stock kernel you have to look for the right version according to your buildnumber.
For exampel: PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.87-i9100.zip

@zetret
I'm replying to you here because it is getting OT in the other threads
The best advise I can give(and one of the core rules of XDA) is start searching in XDA, searching on the internet for the answers to your questions. This site is not for spoon-feeding everyone who is new to this.
But to try to clear up a couple of things:
The original kernel partition in the S2(i9100) "housed" the kernel and recovery together. This is why when you install an older kernel(pre isorec) you are over-writing both the kernel and recovery. So if the kernel is not compatible with the rom, then you will get a bootloop if you try to boot into the system. You can still use this recovery however. You need to decide if you are flashing the kernel to use the kernel to boot the rom OR use the recovery even if the kernel is no good to you.
Isorec changed this. Instead of using the bundled recovery in the kernel(it is still there), you are using the new isorec recovery in the previously unused recovery partition(once you have flashed it there). Once you have flashed the isorec recovery it will stay there. No need to flash it again. An isorec kernel is needed to recognize and boot the isorec recovery, otherwise the bundled recovery will be used.
Please use the search function in future. This is only spoon-feeding I will give.
I apologize. These steps only work if there current Kernel you have is "isorec" compatible. For the Kernel that I had on one of my devices, I went to its thread, and searched for "isorec" and there was no mention of it - which apparently here means that it is not compatible.
If you don't have a Kernel that is isorec compatible, please follow the suggestion offered below, and get to an "isorec" compatible Kernel like 'Siyah-Dorimanx-V8.70-JB-SGII-PWR-CORE-DRAGON-TRIM". I will try this and update this thread later.

@zetret
so you still think it is not rude to say about me:
"Just ignore the other guy. He does not know what he is talking about"
(and you gave wrong advice at the same time)
and in Lanchon isorec thread you said also to me in post 546:
"........You have also shown no understanding of what isosrec means......"
So this is coming from you, a person who had at this time not even the basic knowledge about isorec
only by asking in lanchons thread NOW you found out about the need of isorec compatible kernel.
(which i already told you BEFORE in post 4).p
Now you keep in Lanchons thread complaining and blaiming others why you did not know and unterstand isorec.
You should really show some respect for people here like @the.gangster who is giving the community a lot of support and detailed knowledge in many posts.
For future...
To anyone reading in the future, this is just an overview of what to do.
#: Backup your contacts and photos to your laptop.
a) Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip - this gives you root and CWM recovery
b) Now, backup your current (Android 4.1.2+root) and reboot to recovery
- If at any point, anything fails, you can restore this and start again.
c) Wipe everything (Factory reset+cache)
d) Install CWM version (philz_touch_6.25.0-i9100.zip) for i9100 from here (https://mega.nz/#F!oZ1QDDbC!Ko20UNhowwIlXLVFjJsyKw!lR9AARIa)
- This upgrades your CWM and is apparently a step needed to get to TWRP.
e) Install any IsoRec compatible Android custom ROM and don't reboot
- Check this for more info: (https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nofficial-i9100-cyanogenmod-11-build-t3405634)
f) Install a compatible TWRP file that some people have packaged as a ZIP! If you go to the official downloads folder, you will ONLY find an IMAGE file and for new users, we don't know what to do with that.
- Search for something like recovery-the.gangster-IsoRec-TWRP-3.0.2-1-i9100.zip
g) Reboot to recovery
h) You should be able to see TWRP now!
i) Now, you can install Lanchon's REPIT. If you need more help - follow wonderful guides like this to get everything up and running -
__a) http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-r...0-1-marshmallow-rom-on-galaxy-s2-repartition/
__b) For ROM installation: http://highonandroid.com/android-ho...-marshmallow-rom-using-twrp-failproof-method/
j) Thanks! and if I missed some steps and made it difficult to understand, please correct me. I failed many times and wrote this from my memory and therefore, some things may be missing.
Also, the first three steps above may not be necessary. For some reason, Step 'd' failed for me initially from Stock Rom and I had to do step 'a', but this may not be the case for you. Having that backup in Step 'b' is worth it.
# Restore your contacts and photos from your laptop.

I'd still recommend you to follow either post #2 or this one which is slightly outdated but still valid. Only syntax of repit.zip changed (needs units now) and the IsoRec-twrp in step 7 is meanwhile available as version 3.0.2-1. But if you read both, you should be able to succeed.
Hi, you cannot flash it straight,
so you can follow my step-by-step tutorial for flashing Recovery +/- ROM and +/- reformat.

I figured this one out
To use Philz CWM 6, do I have to downgrade from 5.0.1 to 4.4.x? Or will it work with 5.0.1?
