Does someone know if the HTC shift can be charged via the USB port?
This might allow: 1) use of an external power supply via USB; b) hot swap of standard Shift battery 3) Emergency power in a pinch...
Should it be possible?

No
The shift needs alot more powere than what a usb port can provide, so it's newer going to happen
Yup = the charger outputs 12 v and USB is of course 5 v - Too bad WOuld have been cool to hot swap the battery though...
another charging-related question
My SHIFT has stopped recognizing when the external power supply is plugged in: no orange LED, no icon toggle, no switch to the plugged-in power management profile. The battery charges okay, so I can live with it, but it is annoying. I suspect a component in the charging electronics has failed, but am curious about alternative theories, and if anyone else has this problem.

I guess that's something for the HTC repair service - i really hope they're better than the company that does HTC service in germany...
HTC Red light of Death
Guys,
I am a service tech for HTC. I would like to tell you couple of things.
When there is red right, Battery will not charge with the chargers (Electrical or USB). It will flash with Car Charger as the charge is high in Car charger.
If you see Red light..your Battery is fine. there is no point of changing the battery.
There are two IC in the motherboard of HTC. One is the Charging IC & the other one is Power Consumption IC. You need to Change the Power Consumption IC, which will cost around 10-20$.
Dont follow unnessary steps as it will affect your PDA ROM sometimes.
YOur HTC will work fine for ever.
thank you for your answer

so you said you are working for htc ? if so i suppose you re not allowed to give us some clues about the very specific clio hardware, like the sd card link with the snap vue side..
anyway i think you are very welcome here!
woooooooow ur welcome here defenatly, at least we can pick ur brains with few things, plz plz plz make our shift upto expectations by giving us clues not solution but pointers for making BT and SD work
looking at his lack of spelling and grammer i think he might be a joker especially his last part " YOur HTC will work fine for ever. " erm he would no thats not true if he really worked for them.
tho i hope im wrong and they can get us a shift that works with the odd lil leak of info.

Hello friend,
I am unfortunate I damaged my Shift when power accidentally went in through the USB port thus damaging the power consumption IC in the motherboard. Unfortunately I dont seem to get the replacement part anywhere. You had mentioned that specific part in the post mentioned and I was hoping that you might be able to assist me.
Here is the thread about my unfortunate Shift..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701950
Car power adapter 15-25 for my htc shift is it possible?
Hi to all.
Yesterday I bought via internet a car power adapter like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/15-24V-80W-Car-DC-Power-Adapter-Auto-Charger-Laptop-/180476771054
But my HTC SHIFT can be recharged with 12volts typical so question is:
CAN I USE 15Volts (minimum output from my new car adapter) to power my HTC SHIFT or is just a little bit more. I suppose max 20% more is just good but not more than this.
I must put a zener diode ... to reduce a little bit or as in your opinion I CAN USE IT WITHOUT PROBLEMS.
Thanks
sullivan2002
Thanks for the idea! I would defenitly put a zener between there just in case. Do make sure you use a high amp zener. I could build a boost converter to get from 5 to 12V but that would cut the amps in more than halve but it could be nice to use an external USB battery to swap my shifts battery. I have 3 battery's so that would be nice. Any idea how much a sleeping shift uses? The converter won't be able to put out more than 200mA becouse of the USB restrictions. Is it possible to keep it from charging when swapping battery? Becose i think that charging uses a lot but a sleeping shift almost nothing(not hibernate).
Guys be very careful when using chargers that are above the Shift's specific power rating. My experience with the Shift confirms that HTC did not think about safety measures when putting the Shift together. I had a small freak accident with the Shift when power entered through the USB port and instead of just blowing a fuse the entire motherboard got fried! You dont want to fry the motherboard coz getting a replacement motherboard is as difficult as swimming across the Atlantic. Ask me how I managed to swim across I will tell you.
So I would advise you to tread very carefully. For me what I did is that I had a 12V, 2A car charger for a different device lying around. I simply cut off the power jack on that car charge and replaced with one similar to the Shift wall charger jack and all is good. Of course you also have to be precise about the polarity. The Shift has several week points that you dont want to mess with
They say that the charger of an EEE PC 901 an the Asus R2H have the same charger as the shift. That is only partially true. The specs on the charger is the same but the shift uses a slightly smaller jack. The eee and the R2H are interchangeble. I have a friend with a 901 and it charges my R2H just fine. Shame becose I have 2 chargers for the R2H and only one wonky one for shiffy.

True it has been confirmed that Shift Charger and eee Pc is one and the same. Only difference is the jack.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502548
So if you have a eee pc or similarly rated charger lying around you can replace the jack and you will be good to go. You can pick the Shift size jack from any elctronics shop. Thats how I managed to rig myself a Shift car charger
Hi new member and new owner of a 4G shift
to answer the OP 's original question of "can you charge off the USB"
it depends on your motherboard, I have a Gigabyte X58-UD4P and with the USB power switches enabled my phone will charge while connected to the USB port
I have 4 PCs set up and my personal rig is the only one that will do this
Now a Lap top is a different story, I would suggest checking with the manufacture
of the Lap top to see if the USB can be used for this function
usb
i charge mine vis pc usb sometimes.
works but a lot slower than the stock charger.
Could you explain if it's necesarry a especial cable or how do you conect the Shift's USB port to a energy usb porwer source?
need expetise and advise
my ATOM cannot charge and cannot connect via activesync
battery and usd cable and power charger are proven OK, tested with other Atom , it works
now suspect mini usb port problem or software or other hardware problem
when i hook up charger or usb cable , the red light on for a while and off
i can see the charging logo on for a while, i go to POWER screen, can see charging but just a while only
tell me all possbile solution
million thanks
This could be hardware error...the usb port...
But...try it with carefully plug the usb cable, slowly...don't pull it to end of device slot...
Just untill the red light of battery charging turned on...then leave it...
hope this help...
cmiiw
same problem..
i had this problem recently as well, mine turned out the usb sockets on one of my notebooks couldn't cope with the current being pulled to charge and so shut themselves down stopping the charging after a few seconds. i found a mains to usb charger plugged it in and left it for an hour and all was ok again. if you don't have a mains charger try one of the dual usb to mini leads you get with some external drives, the one i tried seems to spread the load enough to charge the device
hope its something as simple as this for you as well
the atom series from quanta have a lousy usb port and ear piece component used
both of these component need to be hot air-ed out of the board in order to do replacement.
the usb port will be easily fallen off from the board due to poor soldering or mis-used by user.
the ear piece 2.5mm jack will be spoilt when frequently used and headset unplugging from device. when faulty, the device will think that the headset is still inserted & do not project the sound out during a call from normal hearing speaker (user can only use bluetooth headset to do calls) the mic will not work too if loudspeaker mode is on.
my 2cents, find someone skilled to replace them if they still can find the component in market & u think its worth servicing or buy another model.
If you are traveling and need to use GPS, but maps are loaded on a external card and you have your viewpad charging on lighter outlet.
or (my case) you have some serious amount of text to write and you need the keyboard connected as well as your wall mount charger....
Is there any known way to connect the battery charger and a peripheral as keyboard or usb mass storage device at the same time?
I'm thinking about some surgery to the usb-to-miniusb converter that I use to connect my desktop type keyboard to the viewpad, but don't know what could happen to the usb device or the keyboard. Neither know which of the 5 pins (contacts) of the charger is the active one...
Any suggestions?
Tnx in advance.
anothe question....
Ok... since there is no answer over 24hrs, I'll make another question to make this a little more interesting for you people could help me...
Is there any chance to connect a keyboard (already working) plus a SD card at the same time??
I'm making some fun stuff with a keyboard and making some surgery I could install some kind of "external USB Port" on the keyboard.... but, should it work?? I mean, keyboard and flash memory together, connected to one-single miniUSB port....
Developers.... any suggestion??
Thnx again...
Forgett to say.... on Viewpad7 with FROYO 2.2.1
Another idea
Ok, easy people... That bunch of comments about my topic make s me feel kind dizzy...
Just kidding....
Making some research (on goggle, haha!!), I've found that USB port on a pc have a 5volt-500mA output... So, if that's nominal out and that power could charge the viewpad AND don't turn on smoke any peripheral, Then I just have to connect power out on a wall-mount charger to the 1st pin (wire) of a 5 contact miniUSB, regarding on the power out put on 500mA.
(thanks isIran for your assistance )
now... PLEASE SOMEONE STOP ME IF I'M HAVING SOME IDIOTIC, TABLET BRICKING, IDEA!!!!
Thnx again
Hi,
The Viewpad wall charger have a non standard conector, if you look in the contact part you will see double connection.
In the main charger body you will find the pinout:
Pin 1 & 6 +, pin 5 & 10 -
These pins (6&10) are longer than the data pins to ensure that the power connections mate first and un-mate last.
The wall charger is 2 A and the USB PC port only 0.5A (0.9A for USB3)
For this reason a wall charger change in 2 hours and a PC USB in 15 hours.
A dedicated USB charger should short the 2 data lines together. The device will then not attempt to transmit or receive data, but can draw up to 1.8A
for this reason the device know when it's connected to a computer or to a dedicated charger (like a Garmin GPS)
Probably modifiying a connector (or keyboard) to provide energy and data will work.
Did you try a USB hub?
Less us know the result of your experience.
cheers
You could solve the keyboard problem by using a bluetooth keyboard and you can charge the tab on the USB port at the same time.

Right, this solve one problem, but is much expensive and less fun... Besides, didn't solve the flash drive plus charger issue...
About pins 6 &10... Just noticed that (in over a year never look that closer the charger pin).
I'll try usb hub, but I'm afraid to burn some flash drive or worst...
Thanx for your interest and helpful advice...
Hi,
Please, be patient while reading this post, this is a looong explanation of the brick I am facing...
I recently was given a non working XTZ SGP311 and tried to get it back to life. As I have another one SGP311 (this one is perfectly working), I am able to check many things.
I read most of topics about XTZ unbrick but can't find any way to get it back working.
The problem is that I can't have any signal from usb (data or power). I use a genuine Sony USB cable and genuine Sony charging adapter (coming from the working SGP311). The led always stays off.
I tried the different combos as described (vol- and power ; vol+ and power ; vol+ and vol- and power) during 5, 10, 20, 30 seconds (yes, quite complete tests).
I did a cross check of batteries and inside usb connector ribbon (yes, had to open both tablets for that), the working tablet continues to work with the 2 parts coming from the faulty one (battery coming from dead tablet was 0% charged), so the problem is not on the side of the inside usb connector neither on the side of a supposed dead battery. The faulty tablet doesn't boot, even with a fully charged battery inside.
I luckily own a XTZ dock (SGPDS5) that allows to charge without using usb connector (it uses the 2 contacts located on the left side of the tablet). That's the only way to get something...
Soooo, when I put the bricked tablet on its dock, the red led flashes very slowy (say, 1 second off, 1 second on red, and so on).
When I press vol- and power, nothing happens (no matter 5/10/15/20/25 seconds).
When I press vol- and vol+ and power, idem.
When I press vol+ and power : I got the sequence blinks once white led / blinks 3 times white led (after that goes to slow red blinking about if I keep the keys pressed). So not completely dead.
If I unplug it from the dock right after the third white blink, plug the usb cable to the tablet, plug it to my laptop (with emma running, tried with pc companion too), and press vol-, then....nothing happens. Really nothing. No led lit. No detection of anything from the laptop (or device manager as well). It would have been the same if I would have kept it unplugged.
To sum it up, the only thing I can have is 1 or 3 white blinks after having plugged the SGP311 on its docks.
IMO, the trouble comes from a faulty component inside the tablet. Maybe the one that manages the connection from the usb ribbon plug. I checked the tiny plugs inside the tablet (once dismantled and back repacked too), all seems in order.
Your help is welcome !
This is similar to an issue I have it sounds like, you can still flash stock rom by holding power + volume till it blinks 3x then plug USB in and hold volume down immediately.
This gives flash mode, you can use flash tool to put stock rom on with this. The issue happens when it's acting like there's no OS it seems. Problem is mines doing this everytime I flash a custom rom, it's fine with stock aside from **** wifi
Thanks for your help. I tried that yesterday and it did not work.
This may be related to the way of reset I use (but I can't have any other).
As I can't get any white blinking led when connected by the tablet micro-usb port, the one and only way to get the 3 times white blinking led is when the XTZ is on its dock (SGP DS5, power connection only by lateral contacts).
What I tried yesterday was to get the 3 time white blinking led (vol+ and Power), then output the tablet off the dock and connect a usb cable to a laptop running Sony Emma (from micro usb tablet port to usb laptop).
Precision : I kept VOL- pressed when pluging usb cable to laptop.
No result at all. No detection (either Emma nor windows).
Any idea ?

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate.
But I swapped batteries from the working XTZ to the non-working one and put a (about) 60% charged battery into the bricked XTZ (both batteries are charging when set into the working XTZ). I will try anyway.
The problem is that the non working XTZ does not charge either through usb or through the dock. The only interest of the dock is that this is only situation where I can have the "triple white led blink" (but nothing more).
That's why I need the working XTZ for charging before doing anything with the non working one.
What I could try would be to connect the lateral contacts with wires to the dock in order to keep an access to the usb tablet micro port and connect it to a laptop.
But this may be hairy as this would give 2 ways for power (one by the dock and the other by the USB port), and may produce a short circuit...
Any XTZ power experts around ?

Well, not a real solution...
I bought a cheap xtz with broken screen and got its working motherboard and put it instead of the other one.I got the lte component too with its antenna and put it into the 1st xtz that was not supposed to have lte.
So now, on one side I have a xtz with faulty motherboard and broken screen, and on the other side a refurbished xtz with LTE !
I like very much this tablet. Very handy, easy to dismantle and easy to swap its components.
The only drawback is no more support for Sony.
Thank you for the answer
So, you are saying that if I replace the motherboard I can fix that ? I'm looking for motherboard on ebay and I found one for $28 usd + shihpping.
Thank you for answering and take care.

Yes. I think this should be good.
Don't care about the exact matching of the product code: as long as it'll be xtz, it'll be good (16 or 32 gb, with or without lte, and any region should match).
Did you opened it already ?
Yes, I opened 2 years ago cuz my son broke the power jack connector then I replaced that twice.
I'm also tech guy, I can replace that, but won't expend more than $50 for a new motherboard. I'm looking on ebay now.
Thank you

Hello, first of all apologize for my English.
My Xperia Z2 has problems with the USB connector, I know you have some reports of this, but I think I have not found any solution yet. He is almost 3 years old, I think it is normal to present problems, but I still do not want to change my cell phone.
I am having serious problems trying to connect it with the charger via usb, I have to wrap the cable around the device, pull to see if I find a way to connect it, when it connects and starts charging, after a while it starts to hurt Contact again.
When I bought the phone, I used a magnetic charger, but because it was not original cables, it went wrong and I decided to use it for the same cable. I saw that some problems occur because of connecting the magnetic to the opposite, but it has almost 2 years that I do not use and the cell phone always charged normally.
Any solution?
Hey,
I started to have the same issue until it stopped altogether. I had to disassemble my phone last week to fit a replacement LCD and digitizer, and noted that my USB connector had actually snapped off from the logic board!
~TL/DR~ The simple solution is to make use of the magnetic charger. You can get the official charging dock or cables. Both are cheap enough, easy to use and charge the device rapidly.
