Made a mistake. Need some direction. - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I'll just get to the point.
I rooted the HDX using the towelroot app. Installed SuperSU, verified root access., all was successful thus far. At this point I installed Safestrap recovery, using the. apk.
Here's the problem. I thought I transferred the ROM and gapps package to the internal SD card. Could have sworn I did. Well I didn't. My second mistake was wiping all on the stock ROM slot once in Safestrap thinking I had the new ROM on the internal SD. Well I realized I didn't, had to leave the HDX in safestrap for a while and came back to the battery dead. Now it does not boot past the stock recovery where my options consist of reboot system or perform stock recovery. Stock recovery does nothing which is expected after my slip up.
What I'm wondering is if I can somehow flash the recovery back to my device via ADB? Or maybe the stock ROM? If not, do I have any other options.
Disclaimer: yes, I made a stupid mistake, I admit it. Please keep the flaming to a minimum.

yes you did.

Stock Flashable ROM

Alright, so I wiped my phone in TWRP in preparation to flash something and I neglected to make a backup (I know, rookie mistake). The ROM I tried flashing will not go through and now I am stuck. I can boot into recovery fine but I really need a ROM to flash so I have something to boot into. I can't use an RUU (I have tried), probably because I used the bootloader unlock/root work-around. I'd gladly take any advice but I think what I need is just a flashable .zip of the stock ROM or maybe a backup I can restore in TWRP. If some kind soul could help me out, I'd be forever grateful.
are you referring the the stock rom offered by mycomputerdoctor? If so, the flashing does fail, but your phone will still work. From what I understand the only problem is the error in TWRP and you wont have root anymore.
My phone does indeed still work, but I wiped /system before trying to flash so I don't have a ROM installed currently and therefore cannot boot past the splash screen.

Unfortunately, that is an RUU, which does not work for me. Thanks, though.
install the rom, even if it says fails, it should still boot. you could also just adb push the updated rom on to your sd card.

Im in the same boat :/ stuck in recovery and have no rom to flash. going to try to adb the latest version and see how that goes.
I was afraid of something like this. We shouldn't be messing with our phones without a back to factory state.
I'm actually all set now. I flashed the updated stock, debloated ROM and made a back up so I'm good to go.

This will help anyone who keeps having flashing issues.

THIS IS ONE QUICK/SIMPLE ERROR FREE ROM FLASHING PROCEDURE
This should eliminate a few posts saying, stuck in download mode, stuck at logo. just vibrates and them MANY other issues that somehow, everyone seems to find.
Here is my quick rom flashing process I use ALWAYS (yes always)
THINGS YOU NEED ON extSDCARD
1. Extra kernels (2 or 3 you know works for your device)
2. Optional: 2 recoveries that can be flashed (I use CWM & TWRP)
3. Optional: apps.zip (a zip created from Titantium BU, containing Root Explorer, TU Backup, Quickpic, ES File Explorer and Terminal Emulator)
Flashing the rom: TOUCHWIZ/AOSP ROMS
1. Backup current rom (to the extsdcard)
2. Complete wipe, (I do complete, some people do not) Complete = No Issues [FACTORY RESET + CLEAR CACHE + CLEAR DALVIK CACHE + CLEAR DATA]
3. Flash the rom
4. Flash the kernel (your device kernel) (I know some roms have their own kernel) this is where your problems start.
AGAIN: FLASH YOUR KERNEL, you KNOW it works. 1 more time FLASH YOUR KERNEL. (you can experiment with other kernels after you boot)
AOSP ROMS - require you to flash gapps before you boot. [This is not required for TouchWiz roms]
5. Boot the rom.
FINISHED!!!! SUCCESS!!!
Total time to flash a rom:
7-10min
Errors - NONE
This goes for every rom in my guide.
TIPS:
This flash procedure is for Touchwiz Roms, if you are flashing AOSP roms, you must flash the gapps package associated with the rom you are flashing.
**** SGH-I337M Users: Often requires flashing a different kernel than the one included in most ATT ROMS. Any GT-i9505 kernel will work and Adam kernel and Faux kernel are both confirmed working for us Canadian users.
Note: Flash KERNEL directly after ROM then reboot device.
[Special thanks to blyndfyre for this helpful tip].
The extra recovery I flash if a rom does not like the recovery I am using.
Yes, you can flash recoveries back and forth.
Apps.zip I flash after the rom is up & running. This I use to get the rom setup (like root explorer and others needed)
I am in no way responsible for anything that may do damage to any device - Use these tips at your own risk - period!
If you found this useful in any way, please hit the THANKS button for my effort.

I've been running into a lot of issues when trying to flash different ROMs. For instance, right now I'm on CleanROM 1.6 - I just tried to install PureGv2.
Steps I took:
Have Goo and ROM Manager installed after clean install of CleanROM 1.6
Flash CWM from ROM Manager
Install Recovery Script from Goo
Reboot into recover from Goo
TWRP loads
Wipe data, cache, dalvik, etc
Install PureGv2
I forget the error off the top of my head but it doesn't install
In a nutshell I'm asking what am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash another kernel?
Flash your verizon kernel. Correct. I know it is a vzn rom, but do it anyway.

Was looking through Tomsgt's Youtube channel and stumbled across a video of his that showed his "About Phone". Everything was identical to mine, so I'm still a little lost as to why I can flash certain ROMs but not others. Sac/Gru's ROM soft bricked my phone, Hyperdrive5.7 didn't install, CleanROM does. It's just funky...maybe I'll just Odin back to stock, flash the MDK and start fresh.
Could the downloads be a problem? I downloaded 2 of the ROMs from work today on a 50meg pipe and they didn't work.
Do you download the ROMs to your phone or to your computer and then move them to your SD card?
If you download to your phone, do you move them to the SD card or leave them in the download folder on the internal storage?
If you do the latter, do you use a micro SD adapter or plug the phone in and move them that way?

Download to the computer, then copy to the phones extsdcard, should be ok, make sure you do a md5 check on the files to make sure they are the correct size.

Alright sounds good. Flashing back to stock later today then re-rooting
thanks for the help
Remember always do a BACKUP before you do anything.
First off, big thanks for this thread.
Now I'm running Cleanrom 1.5. If I wanted to install a new rom can someone please explain exactly what I do to go about it? As jargon free as possible would be awesome.

I certainly scared the carp outta me the other night. I'm using the Carbon ROM and while I do like it, I miss a couple of the S4s features. I picked what looked like a good modified stock ROM and proceeded to flash it.
I'm using Goo and TWRP for the job. I checked of all 3 boxes for clearing cache, davik and factory reset.
Then I chose the file and started it.
The first result, it acted like if was doing everything but nothing changed. Phone still worked fine.
On the next try, I waited for TWERP to start and I reselected the ROM I wanted and flashed it.
When it booted up, I was very happy to see the original screens come up. Then it stopped on the one with the Verizon check mark. The blue LED slowly pulsing and nothing else for about 30 min. I removed battery to try and start over. Same thing again.
Time to goto my backup and restore my phone back to Carbon.
IT FAILED.
Now my phone is stuck in a weird looking boot up loop. After a few tries I was able to get into recovery
mode. TWRP started loading, froze and crashed! Even though I am a total noob at this, I still did not panic.
I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.

Flashing Questions
So, if you just need to add something, like different Kernerl, do you have to wipe and start from scratch?
Should you.
If so, and you backup apps and data in Titanium, then what you do a full wipe, flash entire rom, and reinstall the apps and data associated therewith?
Last, I have asked this but cannot seem to get an answer.
Installed Hyperdrive 7 (also had 5.7 and 6). Rom is super smooth and fast, working like a charm. but I want Verizon Visual Voice Mail.
I tried to copy the apk file to the devices system/app directory but get permission denied message....tried to install, and get failed message....

did you set the permissions for the app? That should work actually. Look at one of the apps in that directory, and set the permissions the same for the voice app. Reboot and see what happens.
Good luck.

Sorry if this is dumb, but how do I know what kernels for sure work with my device and how do I get them to my external sd card? I suppose the one that is currently on my device(how to get that to sd?), but what others?
Thanks.

Please bring the question over to my thread up above. It shows also what kernels to use. We will help there.
Another noob question: so you still advise flashing a kernel even if the ROM creator says that the ROM comes with the appropriate kernel and that no extra flashing is required? I've got the Verizon Galaxy S4 variant and specifically am thinking of Dubbsy's Google Play Edition ROM.

You would flash the rom, and after, flash your verizon kernel, simple as that.

Cant flash some roms

Let me start off by saying Im far from new to the rooting and roming game. Been through several phones. Never run into this issue.
Note 2 - i605
Team Win Recovery - Up to date
Clockwork Recovery - Up to date
MJ9 Radio from Zif
I am able to install CleanROM and Sophisticated. But when I attempt to install CM11, MeanBean, or Gummy the install fails. It attempts to unzip but always ends with failed. This occurs on both recoveries. I have even tried an alternative recovery. Nothing seems to get it done. Please someone help. Like to note I checked my external SD card for errors. It passed.

General consensus seems to be that philz recovery is currently the recovery of choice for 4.3, id say give that a try
Note2.5
This same thing happened to me. I couldn't even install backups I had. I finally gave up, ODIN'd back to stock and reran casual, everything has been fine since. Even re-installing the same exact recovery.

Im going to give that a shot. I think it may actually be the thing that sorts this all out. Not hat Phillz is not a good option. But that's the other recovery I already tried. Thinking that maybe the Casual I did was not smooth. As it did hang a couple times and was not as smooth as I would have liked. I am going to reply back when I do it to let everyone know how it turned out. Just in case someone else has the same issues.
:good:
So I odin stocked the phone. Perform casual. Much smoother this time. But still no dice. Still able to install only some roms.
Installable:
Sophisticated
CleanROM
Unable to Install:
CM 11
MeanBean ICE
MeanBean Reborn
Gummy

Hmmmm. Somewhere there's a step that's failing you (obviously). Maybe break down your process, from download to flash, and try to pinpoint where it's going wrong. In my experience the things that have caused an install to fail have been either an incompatible or outdated recovery, bad download (check the MD5), or borked system partition (which is when I Odin'd and re-casualed).
Had issues with CM11 until I ODIN'd back to stock LJB, unlocked bootloader/rooted, updated to latest TWRP 2.6.3.1 via ODIN, wiped all partitions included cache, data, dalvik, system, internal sdcard, external sdcard then adb push CM11 plus gapps and installed. Just make sure you can adb push before wiping everything along with checking file CRC and temporarily disable antivirus.
So I the issue ended up being one of an interesting nature but not normal. When I download thw rom of choice to my phone I move it to my SD card. Making sure its out of the distruction path. As is normal practice. I am using Rom Toolbox root browser to make the move. Turns out that although it gave the impression it was moving the files, it did not always do so. So each time I copy a file from place to another I have to check that it was done in full and without flaws. Quite an interesting problem. As a move of that sort should not break files.

It's always something small it seems. Good practice is to download the ROM, get it to it's final destination then check the MD5. I always wait until I've moved it to the SD to check the MD5 just in case there was a bad transfer.

[Q] Can not reboot into recovery, only into download.

So I originally had issues with my S4 when it updated to 5.0 I got a new one from the inusrance company and i wanted to root and rom it right away. Well it took me a wile to root it, I had to find the right (or what I thought was the right) Kernel's to use. I rooted it finally with Towelroot, I then tried to install TWRP and reboot to recovery and load a Rom, however my phone will never reboot to recovery now. It will only reboot to download. TWRP does not seem to work and if I mess it with it it will reboot to download and it won't do anything ells until I use Odin to reinstall the Kernel. If I try the button combo to reboot to recovery it still reboots to download. So I think that keeps me from using SafeStrap as well.
I am at a loss, I just want to get the Hyperdrive+RLS21+KK+S4 Rom on my phone so I don't get the stupid 5.0 that ruins my phone. Is there anyone who can help me out with this? Also I did try to do a factory data reset and that did not work either as it just rebooted to download and I had to use Odin to load the Kernel again and it just rebooted to the same un-reset OS I was in.

You do know that OC1 is still locked down(5.0.1)?
No root, no downgrade, no ROMs, no safestrap. No TWRP unless you happen to have MDK(4.2 Jellybean)
You will have to flash a stock 5.0.1 ROM and life with it.
I had an S4 that did upgrade to OC1 I got a new S4 with my insurance that was not upgraded to OC1 it was still 4.4.2 NK1. I loaded the Kernel NC5 and used Towelroot then back to NK1 but I cant get TWRP to work and boot to recovery to flash the ROM it only boots to Download. I really want to ROM it so that it does not go back to OC1 as when it was OC1 on my old phone that I don't have it was useless, I could not make phone calls or install anything on the phone or it would just lock up and restart constantly.
I can not figure out why it won't boot to recovery, and why if I try to do a factory reset i have to reload the Kernel to make the phone work again.
Thanks,
Brad
THIS IS A TEST PROCESS!!
I just posted a set of service files to try and downgrade...I pretty sure it might work! [emoji14]

It Worked! now I just have to figure out how to re root I tried once with Towelroot and it did no work then tried to load the Kernel that Towelroot worked with and it got all bugy so i reloaded your Kernel and it was still bugy so I did the whole process over again and it worked a second time. LOL
Thanks so much,

TWRP will not work on anything above 4.2.2(MDK). You have to use Safestrap.
Do a FULL wipe to nc5, not the workaround. THEN towelroot, install Busybox(IMPORTANT) and Safestrap(modded version of TWRP SPECIFICALLY for devices with locked Bootloader), install Hyperdrive or ROM of choice.
Well I got all the way through, I got the Safestrap to work and boot to recovery. I did a wipe factory reset and wipe cache and Dalvik. I then try to install rom, now it says to install in a working and setup rom slot? I think that is where I have and issue. If I just try the instal it does not work as I get the error "no MD5 file found" and then "error flashing zip" Do you think this is due to the wrong Rom Slot or am I missing something that I am not doing?
Thanks so much for your help so far, I am so close and at the very last step in this whole ordeal, or at least I hope.

Did you put the ROM on the SD card. Make sure to use the STOCK ROM SLOT!!!
Yeah, both of those things. On the SD card as a zip file and the stock ROM slot. I did try last night to flash another ROM quick to see if it would work and I got the same error so I don't think its my ROM but something I am doing wrong on the phone.
Thanks for your all your help so far,

Finally got it, took some time and lots of rework. I soft bricked it so many times I cant count them. I got this down though now, I am just playing with the rom to see what setup I like now.

Kindle Fire HDX 7, safestrap, recovery but no OS installed...

I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7, rooted it, installed safestrap, then CM 11 in stock slot..
Running great for agres, but suddenly some CM 11 nightly updates appear, then start to download and update.
Update doesn't work, but the tablet will go into TWRP recovery that is part of Safestrap. But it says no OS installed, so it won't boot.
It did say safes-strap disabled, but last time I turned it on it said safe-strap enabled. Still wouldn't boot, though.
Factory reset didn't help.
The tablet isn't recognized by windows, so unless I can find a way to get a new rom onto the tablet, I can't flash a new rom, so I have a brick.
This is why I don't like tablets with no SD card slot. If I had an SD card slot, no problem.
Does the mount option in TWRP do anything?
Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately there is no way to move files onto this device (specifically 3rd gen HDX running Safestrap v4) without a functioning rom. Best bet is to use the File Manager in Safestrap recovery to search the device for the CM11 zip that was originally used to populate the Stock slot. If found you might be able to use that to recover the device (install to the STOCK slot).
You mentioned a factory reset. If performed from the stock recovery menu (outside Safestrap) the device is likely toast.

I had the same issue myself (I had actually formatted the system partition and the sd card without thinking), you might try another USB port and/or another cable, even another computer if you can get access to one.
after trying to get ADB to see my tablet for 3 hours I finally moved to another USB port and it worked right away.
once it saw the tablet it only took a few moments to sideload another rom.
on a side note when it happened to me I was on an unlocked bootloader and was not using safestrap so I cant recall if the ADB sideload feature is even available in safestrap... but if so its what worked for me.

Unfortunately, Safestrap v4 has no native support for adb. There is no way to push a file to the device without a functioning rom.

It's a moot point now, as the battery is dead, and the tablet won't charge, or won't turn on if it is charged. Looks like it's completely dead. Any one need a hdx 7 for spares?

It might turn on with a long press of the power button (20-30 sec) but that will just get you to Safestrap v4 recovery. Beyond that there isn't much hope; factory reset may have killed it (resetting is a no-no with Safestrap installed). Sorry for your loss.

If you still have this device *and* it can boot into Safestrap recovery there may be hope. See this thread for new findings courtesy @skoop99.

Thanks for the heads up! (Runs to get kindle HDX 7 out of the bin).
It does indeed power up and boot into safestrap.
