If you want to flash a custom rom/custom recovery you can with S-ON. Unless you want to rebrand your phone or flash stock RUU/firmware of a lower version you don't need s-off. S-ON is security on and S-OFF is security off this is a mechanism to keep the user from flashing RUU/firmware that are not compatible with your phone. Check the OP of the rom that you want to flash and it will tell you what are the needed requirements. You will need to unlock your bootloader to flash a custom recovery/rom and to root.

Thanks. My phone is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked so I was wondering if I can flash a rom with s off

Read this from the Viper site! As I said before you need to read the OP for their instructions and requirements.

I was using ViperOne 6.2 with S-On, it was not until I went to 7.0.1 I had to s-off to update ruu and firmware. So, you really should study up on what the requirements of your device are. Shortly, S-Off is not "Required" only recommended.

[Q]Pros and Cons for S-OFF Device

My friend told me that if you 'S-OFF' your phone, don't think he said only on the HTC Amaze, but it will remove the 4G and will only give Edge connection. Is that true? And what are the Pros and Cons for having your phone S-OFF'd?
Your friend is misinformed. If someone was to S-Off Your phone without your knowledge you'd never know.

can you please provide me a link on as how to turn s off? and also do you lose the screen ring unlock feature when you do s-off?
Under development there's a sticky. And s=off has no visible effect. It is just for development purpose it alone won't cause anything to be different visually

Take out your battery and then turn your phone back on holding down the power and volunme down buttons. This will load up the bootloader screen where it will either say "s-on or s-off" and will say "locked or unlocked". The locked/unlocked refers to the bootloader

to s-off the phone just means to make "ALL" files on the phone rewritable so the phone can n be fully modified in any way shape or form.. and if you supercid your phone you will be able to flash stock roms from any carrier, as for how to s-off your phone i suggest using the toolkit by hasoon found here

see if you can find yourself a detoxed RUU, either that or you can root your phone and use titanium backup to uninstall the bloatware you don't want
I did as you said. Now I have unlocked bootloader with twrp and rooted. I made a full backup through recovery. I have s-on. If I do messup can I simply use twrp to restore? Secondly if I want custom roms installed I need to s-off the phone or also supercid?

You don't need to be s-offed to flash a custom rom.But it is better if you can s-off.

first off stop everything your doing, you NEED 4EXT recovery for all HTC phones, it was specially built for HTC phones since they only work on HTC phones.. and it has a Smart Flash feature that allows you to successfully flash rom's while S-ON, S-OFF lets you re-write system files with full access.. before htc released the Unlock Bootloader codes it was the only way to flash a rom properly.. and SuperCID lets you change the Carrier ID to Blank so this way you'll be able to restore any RUU from any carrier if your trying to flash back to stock... but it seems like you want to flash a rom so just Flash 4EXT and make sure smart flash is enabled and find a guide or watch a youtube video on how to do a full wipe and flash your ROM... or if you dont want to do a full wipe look for android revolution HD and download the superwipe script and flash that before you flash your ROM
Pros:
1. Able to flash kernels (aka boot.IMG) without using 4EXT Recovery ..but I use 4EXT because madmaxx is an evil genius!!
2. Able to supercid. That means you can change your Carrier Identification and will be able to flash different carriers RUU.
3. Able to SIM Unlock without the need to ask your carrier for the unlock code.
4. Change your Splash Screen. That is the first screen that pops up when you reboot. Then its the bootanimation that comes after.
Cons:
1. Just the attempt to S-Off is stressfull. If you're not patient or not confident or can't comprehend what it is you're reading or watching then do not attempt it. You can end up with an expensive paperweight if you don't know how to recover from something so basic.
2. Another Con. If you do something so stupid and mess with the system partitions then chances are it can end up as a brick also. Only heard of one instance that happened. And it was about a year ago.
Can't think of anything else. But I too would change the recovery. You might not be able to charge your phone if it goes dead because I'm not sure if TWRP supports charging while off. Good luck.
Can I just use hansoon tool yo change recovery? Or is there a speical way as I have twrp?
Sent from my LT18i using xda app-developers app
I use the paid app. But you can use the Hasoons Tool. Mind you that its not the most up to date recovery and 4EXT has been updated atleast a dozen times since then.

Yes. It was worth it a few months back but. You might be better off going to his website and downloading the newest recovery. Up to you.

yeah i remember i wanted to throw my phone at a wall because i was pissed the wire trick wasnt working lol

Can I unlock boot loader and use a different rom with a different firmware

I'm on tmobile and I update to .11 and now revone don't want to work and it seem like the firmware patch the root in the method , so wondering if I change the rom would you be able to get revone to work on the phone??

Soff has to do with the hboot. Flashing a custom Rom changes the system and boot partitions. So flashing a Rom will not change weather you can Soff. With an unlocked boatloader you can flash recoverys and then rooted roms. Twrp will even add superSu to your current Rom.

Yea I know that part and I'm on hoot 1.44 just updated to the new firmware to improve my lte , but my question is that is it possible it I unlock my boot loader And flash a rom and then run revone , would it work ? Becuz the new firmware block the method for s-off
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2
You can still unlock via htcdev. But HTC patched the exploit that makes revone and others like moonshine work, so... Currently there is no method for u to soff. That will not prevent u from flashing ROMs though. Just unlock, flash a custom recovery via fastboot. Fastboot flash recovery "name of your recovery".IMG then your free to flash away.
Now,,, I should note that I have not actually updated to .11. What I know I know from research on XDA. I considered it but since I already updated to 2.24 I decided to only flash the radio from the tmo update.
I hope I have answered your question.

[Q] what are the requirments for flashing software of different HTC one model?

Hi
i currently have AT&T HTC One, 4.3 rooted, S-OFF (hboot 1.44). TWRP recovery 2.6.3.0, superCID.
if i want to install a Google Edition of android 4.4.2 on my phone, without updating my bootloader or recovery.
all i need to do is install a GE 4.4.2 rom + firmware? or is something else needed?
is it better to do a full conversion to GE instead?
would converting my AT&T to GE stock (inc recovery and bootloader) will take me back to S-ON?
i intend to root the device again so i don't care about OTA updates.
sorry if its already been asked, but i searched for an answer for the last couple of days and couldn't find a clear cut answer.
Thanks in Advance.
Update your twrp to 2.6.3.3...
Download android revolution HD 6.1
Before installation perform the following " TWRP choose advanced in wipe section and wipe dalvik cache, cache, system and data." Install ARHD 6.1 and you are good to go.

was interested to know if there was any way to do that without flashing recovery or bootloader,
but to flash only the 4.4.2 GE rom and firmware.
if there is no way, would updating my bootloader through the RUU ruin my S-OFF?
sorry if in asking stupid questions, I'm new to this and have only basic understanding on the subject.

Question about AT&T new RUU.

I currently have my AT&T HTC One m8 bootloader unlocked and s-off. If I run the new full Ruu that was released, will it restore my device to stock? Will it relock my bootloader and turn s-on??? Or will it brick my One? I like to restore to stock so I can receive updates and I'm okay leaving the bootloader unlocked and keeping s-off. Thanks.

All it will do is write the stock Rom, firmware and recovery. You will still be locked/unlocked and soff

Its safe to do. But IMO OTA updates don't belong on modded phones. You have the ability to install the same or better since you are BL unlocked and S-off. Going back to stock recovery and ROM is a step backwards.
This is my 4th HTC Android device, and the number of times I've installed an OTA update is ZERO.

I'm not a fan of the questions "what is your favorite ROM", "best ROM" etc. Its a highly personal choice, and what works for me, may not be the "best" others.
But I am currently on InsertCoin. IMO, almost anything is preferable to stock. InsertCoin happens to have the features I want, and not too much that I don't. I'm personally drawn to Sense-based ROMs, with stock look (but cleaned up and optimized). And I prefer international base to AT&T base.
No disrespect and I understand your response. Was just curious what you personally were running at the moment. I agree with your response on international base. Wish there was an ruu. Since my m7 I got spoiled flashing ruu.zips instead of roms.
