Anyone getting one? Surprised there's almost no interest in this phone. Yes it's not as good as S5 but it's smaller and looks better.
Site says
Chipset
Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801
Cores
2.5GHz quad-core
Anyone confirm?
I've ordered one for my girlfriend.
I picked up the att alpha. If you have questions ask away.

How accurate are you finding the fingerprint scanner to be? Having to reswipe much?

Can you check the mura problem. Go into a dark room, turn screen brightness to minimum, and view a picture or background of a solid color.
Since the screen is AMOLED it might look something like these pics:

The fingerprint scanner is more accurate than the S5. You can now program your finger for straight and sideways swipes. In my short testing it did seem to be about 90% accurate.

Just tested it with a solid black photo and gray photo and could not see any of the problems you describe.

One more question. Does it have a standard Samsung multi color notification led? Any idea if it works with light flow?

I just tested light flow and it does work. I tested half of the colors and you are able to change the notification LED color using like flow.

With HSPA+, I usually maxed out at about 8Mbps in my area. With LTE I can get up to 60Mbps. Of course it depends on how congested you area is. I'm in the Bay Area so on a typical day I can expect ~20 Mbps.
The major difference however is the latency on LTE. Response times are around 20-50ms as opposed to 100+ms on HSPA+. You definitely notice LTE loading pages faster.
Thanks for Posting and questions about Alpha.
I am lpoking at Alpha vs. Z3 C.
Impressed at AT&T Store with physical build of Alpha, pretty and feels durable.
What is your average or best average SOT ?
Some say screen yellow or blue but in normal mode, pretty accurate Color right ?
Speaker loud enough to listen to Podcasts in quiet room 8 to 10 feet away ?
Or even in pocket with speaker facing up ?
Tried a few Camera shots, seems sharper Indoors than people say although bright
in Store.
In average lit homes, restaurants etc. can you get clear shots of walls, furniture,,
showing entire rooms ?
Seemed like S4 type quality photos , though not very familiar withS4, S5.
Call quality seemed good on test calls, speaker could be louder.
Sucks that you don't get better speakers on $500 phones than $ 150 phones,
they grab speakers from a big cardboard box in China, lol no matter which Phone. Lol.
Can your Phone easily read external Mini USB to play ir load photos, audio files, for
Email, using phone like computer ?

It seems that there is a lot of variance between the display quality between different SGS2 units. I myself was perfectly happy with mine until the screen had to be replaced by the Samsung warranty service. The new display wasn't half as bright as the one before and the light sensor coupled with a dim display makes it even worse. I've done some comparison between different units and found that almost all of them had different quality displays - many way too dark.
I made a photo comparison between our own to SGS2s using an original device (bought in early July) as a reference as its display performance is similar to the one I used to have in mine before the replacement.
I would be happy to hear if you have noticed similar differences with you own or your friends units just to get sense of how common the issue is.
The full story below!
*********SNIP**************
I’ve been a pretty happy owner of a Samsung Galaxy SII since April. I’ve especially been pleased with the excellent display that is able to deliver true blacks while being one of the brightest screens out there.
Imagine my horror then when the display broke. It looked like something was leaking inside it. It started as a minor pink hue in the edge of the screen and in a couple days had turned into a bruise covering one fourth of the screen. All the pixels seemed to work but there was a shadow with distinct edges clouding the picture.
The issue
Luckily the warranty covered this and the service point returned my phone with a note: “Display module replaced“. Little did I know that not all Super Amoled+ screens are created equal. After a minute of using the serviced device I noticed that the screen was somehow dark – noticeably darker than before. I checked all the settings – everything was set up the way it had been before with the auto-brightness set on. It just wasn’t the screen I had come to know. We have two units of the SGS2 at home and so I compared the serviced one with the other original unit. The display in the original (reference) unit was noticeably brighter than mine. The difference was even more apparent in the dark shades – where the reference display separated several different shades of dark grays mine only displayed black. The original screen on the reference device delivered the same quality as my ‘pre-serviced’ unit. Then I turned off the auto-brightness on both devices and cranked up the brightness to the max. Again the serviced unit was visibly dim compared to the reference unit. Even the color space between the devices are different – the original quite natural and a tad warm and the serviced one distinctly cool with whites tilted towards blue.
Next I borrowed a couple of other S2′s from colleagues at the office and it turned out their devices were just as dim as my serviced one – one even dimmer! I guess this explains why some reviewers and users have judged the display on the SGS2 to be too dark – something that I always thought to be a silly complaint. It seems that the display quality between devices varies greatly. I’m currently expecting a reply from my service point as to what I should do with my ‘faulty’ screen – I’ll let you know how this pans out.
I tried taking photos with the reference unit and the serviced unit side-by-side. If you think the differences are small and to complain is silly you should know that the real life effect is that taking photos and watching videos is now a pain because every shadow is just a solid black area and when you go into a dark room the auto-brightness drops the brightness way too low. So if you own a Samsung Galaxy s2 with a dark screen – you are one of the unlucky ones.
Below are the comparison shots. If you suspect you have one of the dark screens feel free to leave a comment below.

Happy now? Any comments on the real topic of this thread?
no not really
Yeah i'm also one of the unlucky ones with the dark screen. What makes it worse is the blue tinge when you tilt the screen slightly. Another problem, my screen keeps going bright for about 3 to 4 secs about every 45 seconds and then goes dull again. Nothing to do with auto brightness by the way because i turned it off.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yeah I've noticed the hue shift when tilting the display as well. Also on gray and white surfaces when the screen dims the color is not smooth but looks rather like there is some dirt under the glass. Like it's a whole different type of display than the one in our other SGS2.
I experienced the same situation. I had to replace the screen on the S2 bought back in may due to nasty scratches. The screen was otherwise really top notch with no visible defects.
The one they replaced with is much dimmer and actually has a higher contrast which leads to some color burn. There are also stripes from top to bottom when I pull down the top bar. And as if that was not enough, the picture is grainy. As you pointed out it feels as a totally different display.
I am not going to swap it since I managed to lower the contrast to an acceptable level but it's quite disappointing regardless.
This could be samsungs way of trying to slow down the screen burning?

I still haven't bought an S2 yet but this is a bit of a concern. I'd like to hear from more people with a newer phone, do they have the same screen issues as mentioned above.
If you come from HTC to Samsung, you're certainly going to notice the difference. At least in my case, the HTC had better whites on screen and no blue tinge when tilting screen.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I frequently flash between the XW and XX series of ROMs and notice that on some roms, the screen is darker and on others it is brighter. This is when it is being tested at 100% brightness and display setting set to normal.
If i knew for sure that flashing my phone with the correct ROM would make my screen brighter, i would do it in a flash.

For those with the dim screen, if you are adventurous enough, you can follow the instructions here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235212&highlight=brightness to crank up the brightness of your phone so that you can use the auto brightness.
I have a new white sgs2 and this is the first Android phone I have had where the auto brightness on all roms Samsung or cm7 is totally useless. I use manual now and it looks good at around 1 3rd brightness so heavens knows how low the auto brightness is setting it!

I have the same problem, dirt under glass. The strange thing is, I got a replacement, the same problem. When you lower the brightness, there is small dark area, like dust. Two devices the same shop, the same problem. I start wondering it is the production quality Samsung can get

I have talked about this several times and even sent private messages to developers but all ignored it.
Anyway, try flashing the official kernal of KE2 and you will see the difference.
The collors and screen brightness will change without any effect what so ever to the device performance.
Screen Adjuster is another way to correct this, it is a free program in the market which will do the job for you .

Unfortunately my camera was not good enough to pick up the difference. I scoured youtube and got this picture, and this is exactly how it looks. Vibrant is a bit cooler compared to One S in the picture. But Galaxy S3 display looks exactly the same. What do you guys think?
it's kind of hard to tell by picture but is it possible because your lights are dim? For whatever reason, GSIII default light settings are low...really low. Samsung is being cautious or something...I mean their Auto-brightness future sucks because of this, they make it really dim.
Hmm..Really?! The picture is pretty clear in showing the reddish tint on Galaxy S3 screen. But on that youtube video not a single comment about it. Makes me wonder if this is normal and I guess I am too used to the cooler blue tint on the Vibrant? It has been just a few days I got the phone and exchanging it at Walmart is not a problem, otherthan reinstalling all apps and other setup. But I just wanted to know if this is normal and if so I will be getting exactly identical phone and it is just gonna be a waste of time.
Looks like a defect to me, mine is not like that!
My GS3 is on the left, GS2 on the right. Both at 100% brightness

Thanks, your picture gives me some relief. The SG3 definitely has a warmer tone and I think at 30% brightness it makes the whites a little pink. This combined with the fact that I compared to blueish super bright screen of Vibrant may have caused my panic. The brightness of SG3 screen is definitely low, I mean minimum usable is 30% and you have to set it at 50-70% for most situations. Vibrant is super bright where i can use it even at 0% brightness and anything above 50% really hurt the eyes.
My GS3 does not look anything like that, you can easily see the pink in your display.
Defect, return it.

Get over what? Did I say there was a problem? I am reporting my findings.
I was worried about this, GPad had the same issues and I went back to my trusty N7. Damn
Just to clarify, you can change the brightness level while it still is on auto to change the max brightness. Are you sure it still wasn't on auto? Also, was it warm and possibly overheating and dimming the screen some? It also supposedly won't max out when charging.
I didn't think to check the brightness on the AT&T demo but it seemed bright enough in the brightly lit room. I believe one website speced it out at about the same nits as the DNA which I thought was bright enough, and much brighter than my Note 2.
I kind of wish phones had matte screens though. Then we wouldn't get the reflection in sunlight.
So when I'm on pornhub I can't see the happy endings with the dark screen?

By the way, who the heck are you? I believe there are mods who police the threads, we dont need you chiming in.
It's just kind of funny the first thread you see in the verizon section is someone complaining about the brightness (who already has an s5) when it's been thoroughly covered that the screen doesn't go as bright as some would hope... And it most scenarios I am going to be in darker situations than the AT&T store.. I say enjoy your s5.. Party on.

As I told the other dude....My comparison to the S5 is only because that is what I have. I am ditching the S5 for the G3, so it's obvious I would look for what's better and where it lacks....So just because YOU think it's bright enough and wherever you say it was 'thoroughly covered' that there is a brightness concern, I guess that makes you sane and everyone else crazy.
Let people judge for themselves before you start scaring mass amounts of people away from buying the phone man. The title of the thread is a very in your face. My opinion is that it's bright enough for me.
The g3 gets around 450 nits at maximum brightness the s5 is around 500. Its not night and day difference so bfd. The s5 does get a little brighter in Sun light. But no one should be using max brightness indoors

There is an option to increase the contrast in the settings, it is set to a more natural tone to begin with. The S5 is majorly over saturated and although can be set to a higher temp then the G3 screen, it goes in line to the current trend of over-saturated screens as of late. Kick the contrast up on the G3 and see if that appeases your issues.
I would also like to add 450 nits is the v equivalent of 450 candlepower over one square meter or just imagine 450 candles lit in one square meter it is no slouch by any means. And Any real useable lcd in sunlight needs to be in the 1000 to 2000 nit range

It is not very bright and the contrast is not very good (it does not stand out though unless comparing next to each other). As per reviews and display analysis, this is part of the heat and power management of using a Qhd display with the current display panel tech LG uses. Each pixel has the same power efficiency as a 1080p panel, but twice the pixels to power up. Early next year we should see the second generation for Qhd panels that have the same power efficiency of 1080p displays now. Thing is 1080p will be even better, so still will have better battery life and performance.
Samsung will likely have less issues due to amoled tech using less power overall. Who knows though until the Note 3 and Prime release. Big battle brewing with Apple this fall.
So after reading posts about a pink tint to the screen, i decided to put it next to my girlfriends white s6. Wish i hadnt. Her s6 is CONSIDERABLY more bright than mine with a white screen. I made sure everything was the same. Same screen mode, same brightness level, same picture. Hers was much brighter and much more white than mine. Will take some side by side pics when i get home. Really dissapointed actually... Thinking about going with a regular s6 if i can switch it out.. Just to many problems plagueing the edge.

im not super worried about the pink tint, as many galaxy phones have had this issue and is later not as noticable, but the darker, less bright-screen would diminish image quality IMO.

This was known some time ago. You should read AnandTech reviews at least before you purchase a phone. S6 will always be more bright than the edge.
Try putting a flashlight on the light sensor with auto bright off and brightness turned all the way up. Watch how bright and vibrant the screen gets. It is a programming error. We traded to regular S6s. I noticed my S6 screen also had a very dull screen. Returned it for an M9.

you mentioned two s6's. Was only one of the screens dull? Was the other one flawless? Opinion of m9 vs s6?
so the darker screen on the s6e compared to my girlfriends s6 is just a software brightness bug? i can live with this.. My screen isnt super pink either... If my screen is just as bright as my girlfriends, then ill stick it out for a software update.
My wife is fine with her screen. It seems better than my returned S6. The M9 feels better in hand to me. Speakers are not as loud but sound way better on the M9. The colors on the screen of the M9 are not as vibrant as the S6. Whites are better though. No stutters or issues besides that in my M9. I've yet to feel it get any hotter than the S6.

Also, however, to respond the forum OP's question, OP should definitely check if the auto brightness setting is enabled. With it on, max brightness goes way up, while with it off, the regular max brightness is relatively darker.

Edge is way brighter according to this LUX test, maybe you got a defective unit
okay been doing alot of reading. There seems to be a defect in the edge model, just about all of them. With auto brightness off (meaning the phone has no control over brightness of the screen), in a dim room with brightness bar cranked up, the screen will dim. When i did this test, my room was dimly lit. Will do some more tests later when iget home.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-auto-brightness-issues-strange-glitch-5.html
okay, so heres a video i took to demonstrate the issue.
its a big difference in my Nexus 6 vs the Edge. The Nexus is MUCH brighter.
I bought today S6 Edge and that was for me quite a disappointment.
But when you put a flashlight to a light sensor (or whatever it calls), you can see that S6 Edge has two more modes-both brighter. The first brighter mode is bright like S6 and the second one like S6 under the flashlight (or sunlight). That shows that the screens are same and that the problem is software. I cant wait to see, whether they solve this with the next update.

Same thing here. Samsung is still not solving the issue and it is aware since more than a month! How difficult is to be solved? I'm not sure they will ever solve it at this point.
Guess this is affecting only the carrier variants. Mines a international GSM g925i and I am in a dark room typing this with auto brightness turned off and brightness at 40pc or so..the screen is damn bright and it has remained this way without dimming.. So not a issue here. Also I think the brightness at 40pc is killing my eye right now..so its quite good. May be a feature requested by the carriers who knows...
No it's affecting the no brands also. Mine was no brand bought on the web store, in NL.

Guys check out my post on this issue. I have even given a solution for this
Received today and packaging is excellent which includes earphones and clear case.
Display is quite nice and sound is loud though maybe not as full as earlier HTC models.
Not crazy about their skin so I switched to Nova.
Connects to VZW LTE. Radio appears weaker than Nexus6p and s7edge and appears to struggle in weaker reception areas.
Decent camera.
Speedy though not all of my apps are installed.
Connects to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth instantly.
Fingerprint scanner exceedingly fast.
Keep getting system update screen status though there aren't any.
Still putting it through its paces.

If you don't mind answering a quick question for me, I heard the capacitive buttons don't light up? So there's always a circle and two dots even when the display is off? I really like devices that have clean faces, it's actually one of the reasons, crazy as it sounds, I want to change my OnePlus 3. I hate the fingerprint scanner being on the front. I was excited when I first saw the Axon 7 with a nice minimalist face, but they changed it for the U.S. release. =/
Correct about buttons; don't light up which doesn't bother me.

Hey Mark
Can you do a speed test on VZW?
When I get home: I work in a notoriously weak VZW reception area hence I noticed this phone struggles more than the others. I do have a TMO sim I could try add well since TMO is far better in my area.

Hey I just received mine.... Has anyone had a issue with the GPS... I can't seem to be able to lock on any location... Not with Pokemon go or Google Maps
GPS locks, it just takes a little longer than usual at times.
I like this phone better than my HTC 10. I can actually see the screen while wearing sunglasses now. Reception does seem a little weaker than the HTC 10, but bluetooth and wifi are better/quicker seeking/longer distance on the 7.
TMO average speed: 25/5
I'll test vzw in about a half hour when in better reception area and then Wi-Fi when home.

When you say see the screen with sunglasses are you referring to wearing polarized sunglasses and having the phone in landscape? That would be an improvement over my Find 7a right there.

Hey bud. You said the Verizon coverage struggles in compared to other VZW devices. I know that reception bars can be highly inconsistent between other phones. Perhaps you should check the dBm measurements that are available under About Phone > Status to check the dBm. The full bands are there for VZW so I'm curious to see. Thanks.
Wow vzw is all over the place but fair warning my area is not really good:
20/35
7-10/4-6
10-20/5-10
Very unpredictable in my area.

May you report the dBm in comparison to other VZW phones? :good:

I said I live and work in an area with typically weak reception and that it's struggles more so than other phones that I own. however all of my phones struggle with VZW here. I did check -102 dbm

Ok, thanks a lot man. I didn't mean to sound annoying. I am wondering how this fares to your other VZW phones. I have Verizon myself and I hope I don't lose some reception if I buy this phone.
On At&t
Pros & cons (all mixed in here)
No GPS issues, works fine and fast for me
Sound is on par with, and maybe a little better than my Moto X Pure. Slightly fuller and it can get louder without any crackling/distortion
Signal on At&t appears weaker, but my speedtest LTE readings are as good or better than my Nexus 6P with 24 - 25mb down, 12-15mb up.
Charging on a computer is really slow! My Moto X Pure and even Nexus 6p both charged faster.
Don't like the fact you have to tap the lockscreen after you double tap it to swipe to open it
Don't like the notification thingy on the lockscreen you have to touch to see your notifications either...Hopefully that'll go away in an update, or the option to turn it off.
Someone told me there was a dark theme, but I don't see it? Not a deal breaker for me though.
Hate the squishy "stock" Android emoji's.... But once again, not a deal breaker for me.
**On a side note, I ruined 2 screen protectors and the Skinomi was too big, so it's going back. With the slightly curved screen, you have to get it dead center or it won't attach to the edges too well. - The two ruined ones are partially my fault, but these are the exact same issues I had with the Moto X Pure and it's slightly curved screen.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this phone!
OK better Vzw area seated:
49/29
Go figure!

Okay, here is an oddity. If I am on Verizon and then switch to Wi-Fi and back to Verizon there is no connection. I have to reboot the phone in order for it to recognize Verizon. I tried airplane mode and shutting off data but always had to reboot.

Yeah we gotta find the dark theme, too much white on this great amoled screen! I need root for layers too! I really like this phone but it's going back if bootloader isn't unlocked soon.
I did a speed test this morning and got 75/15 down/up on at&t. Phone has been nice and snappy. I totally agree about your issues, why didn't they do ambient display and ditch that icon you have to push to peek at notifications?

Hey everyone, congratulations with your purchase!!!
this phone really brings the upgrade urge back (i have Note 4 now).
does it have a netmonitor (like 0011 in samsung) to see signal state, available bandwidth in mhz, and if there's any carrier aggregation?
can you limit the phone to use only specific bands, like:
2G no bands (prohibited)
3G 2100 for calls
4G 2600/1800 for internet (prohibiting power-hungry and low-speed band 800)
this easily doubles, or triples, the uptime on a single charge (for N910F).
samsung's example of such menu is here:
i'm not sure for Axon 7 the savings will be as notable as for Note 4 (as new snapdragon and modem are more power efficient), but why not try?
another question is:
is Axon 7 Cat.6 (300mbit 2CA), or Cat.9 (450mbit 3CA)?
the new snapdragon has a cat.9 modem, right?
