After the upgrade (17.12.a.0.314 firmware) my tablet xperia z2 lost his ability to connect with TV and beamers using MHL. I bought two different adaptors mhl-vga. I used adapters before the upgrade without problem (I connected adapters to electricity as suggested). Actually each time that I try to connect one of the MHL adapters i'm receiving the following message: "alimentation in Not enough. But I connected, as suggested, MHL adapters to electricity. Any idea?

I just found a MHL cable for the SGS2 on Amazon with Micro-USB to HDMI.
I have a Samsung HDTV bought about a year ago. Now i know that MHL means you can charge as well as view the phone stuff on the screen but MHL TVs have not released yet (i think, and even if they have i wont be getting one anytime soon).
So my question is can i still see the TV out if i use the MHL cable on my older TV? I know it definitely wont charge.
Anyone?? :S
yes you can.
all you need is the adapter from MHL (micro-USB) to HDMI, connect the HDMI to the TV and you are good to go.
the advantage of the original samsung adapter is the ability to connect a power cable to the adaptor and charge the phone while it transmits the picture to the TV.
hope i helped
Thanks mate
For anyone confused, an MHL cable is a Micro USB to HDMI cable - no ifs, no buts, this will transmit HDMI from a compatible MHL port. Nothing else needed (except I believe it must also be connected to power)
Your micro USB port on the bottom of your SGS2 is an MHL/USB port, and will therefore work.
Important to note is that not all micro USB ports are also MHL ports, therefore will not necessarily work on some other micro USB port on a different phone.
Hi together,
ive asked me if it is possible to use an adapter for 1x micro usb (plug) -> 2x micro usb (jack).
Could the phone handle 2 USB devices at the same time?
Maybe then it is possible to use the HDMI output and the USB host parallel?
For example to use an TV as screen and an HDD as the source for a movie.
This would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

When the connector is used for HDMI I doubt it can be used as USB at the same time, I'n sorry.
Maybe in a few months cyanogenmod provides a hack, if there will be an dual adapter soon.
We will see. Thank you.

The hardware needs to allow this if it'd become possible. You need a really smart USB dongle that knows how to split the HDMI output from the USB output.
Sounds a little too difficult to ever happen.
Hmm thats right. I think i still dream xD
But thank you.

it is not possible. because as stated on this forum many times before, the type of usb connection is determined by the resistor between pin 4 and 5 of the micro usb connector. the strength can tell the phone, that there is either a charger, a pc connection, car kit, jig, usb otg or mhl connection present.
and i believe, this is an important thing to keep in mind for so many things:
for instance, why the original car kit triggers car mode and generic car charging cables don't or why not just any micro usb male to usb a female will work as a otg cable or why flashing should be done with the original usb cable...
so if you were to buy or build a micro usb hub, since it has no resistor in the very plug that connects to the phone, it cannot be used for anything but charging and quite frankly, i wouldn't connect more than one charger to the phone.
however, if you want to use your phone for presentations or watching movies and still be able to use it, get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or a bluetooth presenter or do it the other way around and use a usb input device and transfer your media using allshare. everything else is physically impossible, so neither CM nor XDA can do anything about it. the only device that can do what you want is the new motorola. it has a separate micro usb and micro hdmi port and a docking station, so you can use it as a full notebook.
Thats obvious. Thank you.

Hey there, i have tried gathering information about this subject and it seems all threads always lead to this announcement:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
Short: Samsung have changed to an 11 Pin-out to enable USB OTG and MHL Hdmi out at the same time. I purchased an original HDTV Adapter (EPL-3FHUBEGSTD) which as far as i can reliably count indeed has about 11 connectors inside the USB connector that goes into the phone.
Now, i can get HDMI out just fine, but ONLY when i also connect the MHL adapter to a power source (a PC USB Port will do fine), however i have also read, that the phone is able to power the MHL adapter itself but obviously would not be charged then (no surprises there). This does not work however.
Further, connecting a USB OTG cable to the micro usb port on the MHL adapter does nothing. No notification and no devices connecting. No power either, since the LED on my USB Hub does not light up as it should. Connecting any devices to the hub does nothing to change that situation. If i leave out the MHL adapter and connect the USB OTG cable directly to the phone, everything works perfectly. I have tried this with 2 different OTG cables so they are not the problem.
This is an original genuine HDTV Adapter for our phones, which according to that post should be working fine with USB OTG.
AFAIK, this topic --does-- come up more frequently now as i can find a few more discussions about it, albeit none really helpful:

That wiki entry is the most interesting link as it definitely states that using MHL and USB OTG simultaneously is possible and is also the reason why the 5 pin layout was changed to an 11 Pin layout.
Looking forward to reading your replies!
the ability to use MHL and OTG simultaneously would give the S3 so much more purpose. It is powerful enough to replace a desktop computer used only for light stuff like browsing and watching videos, and even simple gaming. If samsung made a dock like the one for the motorola atrix I'm convinced they will broaden their target group. The atrix got everything right with this but is inferior hardware wise. I love the idea of a one device for everything concept. Unfortunately it doesn't rhyme very well with the growth society.
Love the MHL and the OTG is even better only after I got the correct cables as the cables changed on S3 to the S2 version, unlimited space for watching films on my phone is now awesome and even better connecting it to to the TV just need a good dock,
is there perhaps any expert advise on this? According to multiple sources it should work but really doesnt. Did i buy the wrong mhl adapter?
I think they will only both work together when being used with an MHL enabled tv. That way the power comes from the tv and the usb on the adapter can be used for the usb-otg cable.

But if i connected the MHL with the s3. Would sound come out of my phone AND my TV or just my TV. If it justs comes out of my TV, then can i hook up my bluetooth headphones and listen to my video or it would not allow me?
Thanks

Ah ok sorry! Afaik you should be able to choose your headphones as primary audio source in the bluetooth settings. I know I can choose what I want to be output to my bluetooth headset, but I don't own an MHL adapter so I don't know about that. Someone with one should be able to try it, and if they don't own a bluetooth headset/pair of headphones they could try with wired ones and see what happens.

I have recently received an MHL connector (5 pin type) and the samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter for it. I can confirm that if I plug my OTG cable into it, and then into my powered USB hub, I can get the MHL to work just fine, both video and audio. The OTG cable powers it just fine, but does NOT allow me to use other devices attached to the USB hub.
I am still researching. I suspect you need to bring all 11 pins off the phone with a splitter of some sort, or possibly wire data lines through the MHL. Probably not with the 5 pin MHL connector and 11 to 5 pin adapter, but with the full 11 pin MHL adapter. I am not up to that level of hardware hacking. I suspect whoever does it first can sell a BUNCH of them!
Oh, and I have a Moto Lapdock for my Raspberry Pi, and would love to hook my S3 to it too!

Hallo every one
I was at the market want to have cable to connect my z2 to my TV with HMDI
So there was to way to do this
1 from HMDI to micro USB
2 frome HMDI to normal USB and then cable to micro USB
And I like the choice nbr 2 because I can connect my laptop too
But Iam not sure if my phone will work
Did any one know about this before I buy it because it's costs 40€ and I must be sure.
many thanks.
Xperia Z2 has MHL so if you buy micro USB > HDMI it will work. (I don't know if it works on custom roms but on stock it should work properly).
USB in laptops/PCs cannot sync video due that video output is from graphics card and USB has nothing to do with graphics card.
Something else is if you have USB type C and if manufacturer guarantee that it can sync video.
Next case, that is price. 40€ for that? You will overpay! You can buy that for about 3€ on Aliexpress
Ah, but his Z2 is HMDI so it will never work

Haha xD
Bumping: When buying an MHL adapter, make sure it's not made specifically for samsung devices, because there's no cross-compatibility. Talk about "standards".
PD: I tried buying one from gearbest. The package never arrived. Such is life in Bolivia.
Bumping again: someone knows how to connect MHL and OTG simultaneously on Z2?
Thanks in advance
No. It's not possible. At least not with the Z2.
The USB port, and the chipset only supports either USB mode, or MHL (hdmi) mode. Not both at the same time.
It can however charge the device while in MHL mode.
Even though there are multi port adapters out, the same thing goes. Either or. Not both.
Some other manufacturers devices DO support both modes simultaneously, but only through the special port and a special adapter for that particular device. I.e. Samsung 11 pin port for some galaxy variants.
If you're interested in keyboard and mice, there are Bluetooth capable keyboards and mice out there. That'll work.
For storage I'd suggest using a larger SD card in the SD card slot.
Hi!
Background:
I'm an esport producer and after some nightmare productions I'm really excited about the rog phone as it seams to be the only phone that have the features needed to make it into a good esports phone (e.g. Having 8-10 players competing in from of an audience), mainly: Hdmi output, ethernet capabilities and usb-c ports on the side..
Problem: After first successfully testing out Hdmi + ethernet connection I wanted to try if I could use the fan accessory and still be able to get the Hdmi signal from it.. When I connected the fan it told me to update the fan firmware so I did, but after that I'm not able to get Hdmi signal either with or without the fan accessory.. For instance, when I plug in my portable asus laptop monitor (power and signal from usb-c) the monitor starts to boot up and then dies.. Then tries again and dies and so on.. On my Samsung s8 it works fine.. So I'm guessing the firmware limits the power that the phone can output on the usb-c port.
Question, has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a way to uninstall the fan firmware update (that obviously did not only affect the fan but the phone as well). The Hdmi adapter I used was something very similar to the professional dock but is actually an usb-c dock ment for laptops..
Tl:dr; hdmi doesn't work after "fan firmware update", plez halp.

Just a small update,
I was able to get it to work if I disconnect the power cable from the USB-C dongle and then connect it again.. and sometimes it also requires me to disconnect the HDMI + reconnecting that as well.. so I'm not sure if this actually was due to the fan firmware or just a result of a... weird bug(?) when it comes to the OTG features of the phone.. because connecting the dongle with both HDMI + power already plugged in does not work.
Anyway, just wanted you guys to know that it does work, just need to randomly connect/disconnect cables from the dongle first =)
Best regards,
Which USB-C to HDMI adapter were you using? I am looking for one that works with this device, aside from the fairly costly pro dock.
