[Q] CM 11 and Battery Life Drain Fix with Flashing Radio/Modem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have CM11 on my phone and work great but i have like many others battery life problem. I saw on another thread that the problem can fix with flashing old .48 radio. I dont know what that means exactly.
How can i see what radio/modem I have now? If I flash new one , phone will run in CM 11 anymore? If yes, then where can i download a modem/radio to flash?

What was your previous ROM and what is the one which you flashed today? And are you getting any networks in the search? If yes, is your home network available in the list?

And the default rom was what? 2.2.x or 2.3.3?

Which version of Android did u have on your phone before you rooted and flashed a new ROM? Which ROM did u flash?
If u had Froyo (2.2.*) and now u flashed a Gingerbread based ROM (2.3.3), you have a baseband problem (The baseband is the subsystem of the phone that controls radio communications: GSM and data connection...). Froyo uses a different baseband (old) than Gingerbread (new baseband).
Solution: change the baseband according to your newly flashed ROM.
How to upgrade/downgrade baseband for noobs
Flashing baseband (radio) via LGMDP.exe
If u have a Froyo based ROM or any ROM that needs the old baseband (Mik_os's CM7 port...), you need P500-v10E-baseband.7z
For Gingerbread based ROMs u need P500-v20G-baseband.7z
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
Since u came from Gingerbread u have the new baseband. Since #forever is based on CM7, it uses the old baseband... U need to downgrade to P500-v10E-baseband.
Has I said I am a rookie but what I did was:
Installed original 2.3.3
- Rooted
- Created recovery
- Installed latest Void #forever
GSM didn't work

Dude, you had 2.3.3 first. It uses new baseband.
Void forever is based on CM7, which supports only old baseband.
You can do any one of the following things:
1. Flash 2.2 official ROM through KDZ. So you'll get old baseband again and you can install void forever. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060121
2. Mik has a fix for the new baseband. It will provide GSM support, but internet data will not work. Wifi will work, GPRS/3G will not. Go here and flash the file through recovery: http://www.multiupload.com/R9CEDO2HS9
3. You can revert to the old baseband. Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149530 and you can find the old and new basebands here: http://lg-p500.zrusit.eu/index.php?dir=baseband/

It gets easier as you get more "seat time" with this stuff.
I'm running Mik's stable at the moment and I'd say it meets 95% of my needs. Great ROM.
also dont forget to look into the available kernels, they are preety much what makes your system what it is concerning its speed, graphics, battery life
the current mik_os and void both have outdated versions of the franco.kernel, and a much more recent version is available, as well as a modified version by fserve.

I have flashed the new kernel, thanks.
Honestly I am very thankful for you guys being so nice. Sometimes I see in the forum some really hard messaging towards the new guys and I think we all want to learn right?
So my biggest problem with the phone I love P500 was that it was a bit laggy and although I moved apps as much as I could to the sd I was running out of space in my rom.
Now the system is a lot faster and although (because I am a noob) I lost some of my stuff I am glad because the phone is working so much better.
Actually I have another question: I bought Titanium backup because it seemed really worth it (it is the only paid app I have) but when I look at all the possible apps to backup there seem to be a lot missing (all the ones in the sd card).
Does anyone now how I can fix it?

[Q] Reception / antenna problems (GetRIL)

hello fellow xdas
while back i had gotten my hands dirty with the CM10 project as i just couldn't wait for the official update! i learned quickly that i had serious problems with antenna/reception. i tried carious base bands (as recommended on forums) using GetRil/flash.Odin. this didnt seem to help, even though i would get better reception, my signal was unstable. In the process i tried other roms like JellyBam and had the same issue.
As this is my main phone and i do actually need to call with it, i went back to the stock rom i downloaded. but surprisingly i still have the same issue! GetRil also shows that i have incompatible RIL/baseband. this is what it shows:
RIL: I9100NELP2; I9100XXKI4
Baseband: I9100XXLPQ
FYI: i am located in the Netherlands and use T-mobile network.
so have i installed the wrong ROM or done something wrong in the process... ? does anyone have any experience with this? i much rather have CM10 but only if i can get to call normally once again?
thanks

thanks a lot zee54,
can i just go back to my CM10 or JellyBam, install the above mentioned radios and get everything working? or does it depend on the RIL which that ROM is running! I have tried a number of modems when i had CM10, but dont know if i tried those... i did try BVLP7 for sure
Based on this forum right here i need to have the I9100BOLPD ROM as stock for Netherlands T Mobile!

The modem is independent of the ROM, mate. So it wont make much of a difference whether you install the radio on stock firmware or on CM10. You could try using the modems mentioned by zee54 with CM10 and seeing if it helps. Also, give it about a day or so..since the phone tends to take a while to get 'used' to a new modem.

The unstable signal or "RIL Crash" as it it called isn't actually caused by having an incompatible RIL and Baseband (modem). It is a more complicated issue which I don't fully understand myself. But what I do know is that it currently affects all customs roms that are based on CM10 and use the CM Kernel. So switching modems might help recude the frequency of the problem but probably won't irradicate it completely.
You should not experiencing this problem if you go back to stock samsung firmware. If you experience problems you might want to do a full wipe (Data, Cache, Dalvic-cache) before reflashing and fix permissions afterwards.
On a more positive note, I have found that using the Siyah Kernel with your custom rom does seem to eliminate this problem, or at least reduce it occurance to such that I have not noticed it happening.
So personally i would suggest that if you wish to go back to CM10 or JellyBam ROMs, then do so but also install the latest Siyah Kernel for the S2 from here http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
(Here's the XDA Thread for the Siyah Kernel - [KERNEL] SiyahKernel v4.1.5 (v5.0a2))
I am currently running CM10 with the Siyah Kernel v5.0b2 and it is working very nicely
great stuff guys... 2x thanks for both of you!
Zeey54, i just had Siyah v5 Kernal installed, installing the latest JellyBam right now! so lets see what happens. i was suspecting that beside the RIL/baseband there were other factors as i did not see any significant difference between them. but then again i dont trust my judgement on such issues as my knowledge is quite limited.
will send an update with the result after installation in a few min.

installed the BOLP7 modem, overall reception is much better! data connectivity is also better and faster. but i still have some periods which my receptions drops and goes back up, seems like radio/modem crash (if im right). dont know if that is due to the kernel or modem or ...?
the reason i went for BOLP7 modem was because the latest official stock rom from t-mobile Netherlands was I9100BOLPM_I9100TNLLP8_I9100BOLP7, so i thought that would be the best one to try!
will wait a little more to see if this improves as the modem settles.
4th official ROM too much coverage you please make a review ?
need modem
First of all, thank you mate for your hardwork and awesome utility.
I have a Samsung galaxy S2 I9100G , recently flashed jelly bam custom rom. I am based in Saudi Arabia, the reception is not clear and people complain that it is switched off or out of network. I tried calling with another mobile and i got a response that my mobile is switched off, at the same time i checked my S2 mobile , it shows the full signal of the network in status bar.
what should i do? Which modem should i flash. the getRIL shows RIL/baseband is matching (I9100GDDLP5).
cheers
Rizwan

[Q] Recovery Mode not working after update!

Hey there,
I've been using Cyanogen mod 10 for about a year now (actually probably 10 for 6 months and then moved to 10.1 as soon as it came out). But just today I decided to update to the latest version of the OS through cyanogens update feature on the phone. I was updating to 10.2 FROM 10.1, but I didn't realise the latest version was 10.2 until I checked after. Now my phone restarts by itself every 20 mins and my 3G is doing weird things :/
But the main problem is that I CAN'T boot to recovery mode anymore! I don't know why?! If I could, then I could fix everything :/
Any help would be much appreciated thanks. I can provide any further details if needed. I hope to get this fixed soon as I use it quite a lot! xD
Obviously broke recovery. You could try flashing an Odin version of a custom kernel, but this may not work (might as well try it tho). If it were me I'd go back to stock via Odin, re-root & restore nandroid backup or reflash rom/kernel & start again from scratch (tho I wouldn't need to do this because I make regular nandroids).
Personally speaking, I wouldn't use that update from the phone feature in future. Flash updates/nightlies from recovery. Takes a few extra minutes, but saves you a lot of grief.

Thanks for the quick reply and tip! For now on I will definitely install from recovery only.
I tried reflashing the Clockwork recovery thing but it didn't seem to fix it.
So I was thinking about flashing the Siyah kernel? Is this a good idea? I flash just the PDA file only right?
Sorry for not knowing much about this flashing stuff xD
Yeah, you might as well try the Odin version of Siyah even tho it probably won't work. Can't hurt put it that way. Yep, flash it in the PDA section of Odin. If that doesn't work flash a stock rom with Odin as I mentioned (also in the PDA section). If you get stuck, look for Hopper8's 'Odin won't flash' thread.

Reflashed to a pre-release version of JB from Samsung Thanks heaps for your help! Appreciate it. Will probably go back to Cyanogen tomorrow.
One question though. Is Cyanogen 10.1 supposed to be quite stuttery? I know it's a nightly build and all. But using this official pre-release from Samsung, it's JUST SOOOOO MUCH MORE SMOOTHER! But I expect Cyanogen to be a lot faster :/ Maybe my kernel was just having problems the whole time?
Thanks!
Good man Can't comment on CM10 as I've never used it, used CM9 for ages & got fed up with various things not working as they should/being flaky & have never bothered with CM10 as a result, I'm sure someone else will be able to answer those queries.
I'm guessing you flashed the 0824 nightly of 10.2. According to the discussion thread, anybody who uses this nightly will experience the broken recovery....they've posted a link to a kernel + recovery which needs to be flashed before the phone is rebooted for the first time in order to replace the broken recovery. Concerning the stability of the ROMs.........
10.2.....IMO...NOT stable enough for daily use....
10.1.....fast and smooth, and no bugs that make me want to stop using it.......
10.0.....not as fast as 10.1 but just as smooth but with the same lack of noticeable bugs as 10.1.....
JB Firmware.....obviously the most stable, but simply not as fast.....even if rooted and debloated......
Back to 10.1 for now.....

Sorry about the late reply.
Yes that was the exact build! xD
Oh well I am actually quite happy with the official JB firmware from Samsung atm. It's A LOT SMOOTHER than 10.1 for some reason :/ I don't know why. Just is. I had lots of problems with 10.1. At times the RAM seemed to leak so much I would have to restart it otherwise it would just be so stuttery. ESPECIALLY with Swift Keyboard and Facebook heads xD It's ashame because I really liked Cyanogen. Missed some of the features.

[Q] Would a new kernel resolve radio issues?

I'm on Verizon. I tried installing both the GPE rom and cyanogenmod 10.2. When I do, I immediately encounter cellular issues. I'll lose cellular data often and require a recycle of mobile data. It was definitely worse on cm but I'm wondering if my issues stem more at the kernel level? Maybe the VZ stock kennel isn't compatible with these Roms? If so, is there a kernel you recommend?

Ok simple nope. a least something is wrong with the kernel, kernel have more to do with battery performance, display, smoothness scrolling and wifi to my understanding.

[Q] Question about the ME7 Baseband

Hi all,
Before I get yelled at, the search feature isnt working currently on XDA, so my apologies for something that has probably been asked multiple times.
I'm looking for 'that' ROM, you know, a daily driver, and I haven't come across one that I like just yet. Some of this has to do with my signal strength (I know TW will always have a better signal than AOSP). I'm still on the MDK baseband version. My first question is will an upgrade to ME7 make a noticeable difference? If yes, where and how do I go about flashing it? On my S3 I was able to just flash a zip with the new radios, but I understand now ODIN is necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

What rom are you on now? The reason I'm asking is because if your on stock you might as well flash something like Darkslide which is stock minus some bloat and includes the ME7 baseband. ME7 is in my opinion better but nothing drastic.

He updated that in release 6 so just flashing the rom will update your baseband. Picture in picture and smart scroll will not work on the stock kernel....if you use them you will need to flash a kernel that supports it.
