4.0 is a nice upgrade from 2.3.x. There are other, newer custom options as well for your phone. The good news is, that if the Sony PC Companion fails to update the phone correctly (rare) and it ends up in a mode where it can not boot, there is another tool that can restore the phone as well that is pretty powerful. It would be difficult for you to do something that would make it unrecoverable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r0J0eq5ye4 - Guide is the same for most Sony phones of that generation, if not all...
In case you want to do it manually or PC Companion fails:

No problem. Never hurts to be cautious.

I made a terrible mistake, I followed the instructions to update to MiniCM6 and forgot the 'Factory Reset' before restarting my phone.
Now the X11 mini keeps rebooting in loop, I cannot access xRecovery any more. When I withdraw the battery and plug the usb when pressing the back button, I can flash with FlashTool.exe again as I needed before to have the baseband 015.
I don't know what to to and cannot find any clue on the forum.
tomorrow will be a day without phone... back to the 80's
Someone knows what I could do?
(To be more precise I uploaded MiniCM7, not MiniCM6)
The software Sony PC companon told me that there is not version yet available for this model, very strange after warning me that all my data would be deleted I hoped a full restore (it also requires a start with the back button pressed)
Do a SEUS repair, install recovery through the flash tool and then go to the Mini PRO forum and download their ROMs because a Mini Pro cannot use a Mini (without the keyboard) ROM and visa versa.
Let this be a lesson to always follow the instructions... thats why they there...
Good luck!!

I have been trying that from the beginning and it kept telling me
"there is no software available for your phone yet, please try again later" when I choose "repair" in the PC Compagnon. I never could find "repair" in the SEUS

According to the sony forum it seems I'm not the only one without repair option on SEUS and having "there is no software available for your phone yet, please try again later" on PC compagnon.
But non of the threads finish well...
I think Vodafone Australia didn't do their homework somehow... and Sony punishes their customers...

I've spent hours using it... remember I have no phone anymore, it's a good motivation.
This whole thread that you link (thank you for trying) just say "launch SEUS". Basically, the first thing that I tried before writing here.
I though you use to have such problem and had your own way. But since the SEUS and PC Compagnon failed you seems as powerless as me
Even on the SE forum nobody know what to do when the "repair" is just not available.
There's a ROM for each provider, I guess Sony bugged on Vodafone Australia.
Then, Try this

If you can't fix your device with that thread, you should take it to Someone who knows how to do it, You can make more damage to your device, if you do something bad.
Hope it works for you.

After attempting to backup my Sony Xperia S, there was an error. So I tried to install an update instead. This went wrong too. Wtf?
Now, when I want to start up, I see "SONY", all normal, but then I see an exclamation mark with a triangle around it with a smartphone under it... probably bricked? I've had this before, but then I used Sony's update Service software to re-install the whole thing and it was gone. But now, I have 2000+ photo's on it, and I'm not going to re-install it from scratch like I did before... Obviously. When I hook it up to PC Companion, PC Companion detects it, then undetects it. Detects it, undetects it. Etc...
So the question is, is there anyway to get all the media off with it being in this state? The photo's are precious to me as I use it as a digital camera. All the photo's also include all the photo's from my last phone. And the phone before that...
Can anyone please help me out? I will take it apart if necessary!

Thanks brother. We'll have look into it.
Hi,
So around early 2012 , I connected my mother's Xperia Neo to my pc , it installed something called sony ericsson companion or something related to PC connectivity. Once I started it up , it said Update Found for your device , Android ICS 4.0.4 , so I was about to click update , but I was afraid of data getting wiped.
However , I've created a backup and I've seen many friends do sony Ericsson updates , and no files were lost or moved or corrupted , so I got my hopes high. I've tried today to update my mother's phone , About>Update>Update and it said no updates found -_- , the PC told me there's an update! How it is not available now? Even the program it installed doesn't work anymore , so I can't check to see if there are any updates.
Please help me and thanks!
Recap:
How to get ICS for Neo Officialy?
Gingerbread to ICS is a rather large update, so it is not availble OTA (over the air) on the phone. You have to connect to the pc and update. No files will be lost, although the performance would be quite bad to say the least. You should tell your mum that you are going to mess up her phone.
Don't update, if you mother is familiar with Gingerbread otherwise she will complain about its slowness and learning again the new stuff.

I don't get it, you already update it, but stuck on the 1st flashing step
anyways, Hold your "Back" key and plug in the USB Cable to start flashing, otherwise you won't get in flash mode.

Then you are doing it wrong.
you need to follow the instructions as it is ...
First run PC Companion and update let its job done until it says Turn off your phone & unplug the cable (something like that)
here is eXtra noob guide for updating Xperia phone using PC Companion.

Hi,
I have a UK Sony Xperia Tab Z, WiFi only 32G, it was running 4.1.2 stock with root. After a very long wait of sitting on the fence because of the loss of Tab UI (now sorted with phab7), I finally plucked up the courage to update my Tab Z to the latest Jelly Bean 4.3, using my MAC I ran Sony Bridge, it detected my device and offered to do the update. The whole update downloaded ok but it failed to install with an error about the update engine.
My worse nightmare ...... I'm not that familiar with advanced Android OS issues so please forgive my ignorance. first I tried the update again - multiple times in fact using different USB ports but always the same error. So then I tried running the Sony Update Service under Windows, It found the device and downloaded the update again but again it failed to install the up date (I tried both install options - SW Update only / Data Reset and Update) - I followed the on screen instructions correctly but always the same problem, again I tried different ports.
Starting to panic now ....
Looking through these forums and others for help ....
I've tried holding down the PWR & VOL_UP button for 10 seconds, and letting go, I tried it and then released the PWR button after 10 secs but keep VOL_UP held down, but no matter what i do it wont start up. Some times the SONY logo appears then fades to black after a few seconds....
I really don't understand what could have gone wrong, the device was working fine and the battery was 100% charged. I've tried the button combos with it in and out of the dock and connected by USB but still same result.
I cant believe that something that should work WITHOUT-FAIL does not work, I've always been an IOS/MAC man and the Sony Tab Z has been my one and only Android Device, I like the device for its design and lightness but this sort of catastrophic failure has been the thing thats aways put me off Android, it just should not happen - sure IOS sometimes can get corrupted but you can just about always get out of the problem in DSM mode, is there such a mode with Android & Xperia TAB Z. Can anybody help ?
Update: If I now put the Tab in the Charging Cradle, it seems to be stuck in a loop, first the charge led is orange, then after a few seconds it turns red and the backlight switches on, the SONY logo appears for a few seconds then it looks like it resets, the backlight turns off and after a few seconds it repeats the sequence ... continuously ?
Thanks in Advance
Jay

Thanks for your advice.
I tried SUS again and this time it started to install but the progress bar stopped around 30% and i got the same message, so i tried again and it bombed out after around the same amount of time so i swapped the USB cable for the one it came with (normaly used to connect the changing cradle) and it worked......Phew was really starting to think the thing was bricked. I guess this proves that all USB cables are not equal ?, strange though as i've used the same cable for a long time now with loads of other devices (camera, kindle, SD reader, label printer ..etc) and have not had any issues but it worked soon as I changed the cable .... maybe Sony cable is better screened as it is a bit thicker than the other.
Everyday a School day ....
So now I have got 4.3 stock running what is best method to get root back ?
Cheers

Thank you for the link but I dont understand why I need to reflash?
Is there not a direct way to gain root?
To get root on 4.2.2 I just had to run a script and reboot
Ive read throgh those instructions and it looks like I have to install unlocked bootloader and then flash modified firmware
I thought that if boot loader is unlocked some of the Sony features no longer work?
Is there no way to gain root on stock 4.3 with locked BL?
Cheers Jay

All started when I tried to put a GB ROM. I got 'Status 7' error in recovery. Everything went wrong from there.
IF ONLY it had a removable SD card and I wouldn't have lost any hair.
Please write in steps what I need to do to put GB ROM on it. Which recovery?, because all recoveries I see are for ICS or ICS+ versions.
I am using 'Flashtools' for everything. Recovery, ATM, has no ADB side load. So start from A and end at Z.

This.
You can try and connect your xperia phone to PC Companion..download it its free..or you can also SEUS..when connected it will give you a prompt to fix the phone and it will download the firmware and flash it after..
Are you sure that will help?. The phone in question is in other city and I will be there for a day or two. I dont want to be stuck.
The only thing that is on the phone is CWM 5.5.x.x version.
That should help..i used to own xperia devices in the past..with the last one being the xperia SL LT26ii..got it bricked flashing ROMs to it..plugged it in to PC Companion and got detected..it then asks you to fix the phone's software..root is lost during the process..atleast it gets your phone up and running again..
