Old phone had some problems and I just got my warranty replacement.
I want to do a restore of the old phones settings on the new phone, but adb restore fails after a second, and I can't use Titanium Backup without root.
I don't want to full root yet because this is my 5th replacement and I don't want to do anything like that until I know this one is going to work.
Are there any tools that will allow me to get a temporary root just long enough to do a restore?

So I would like to get the Ubuntu hack working on my atrix but I already rooted, installed 1.57, and installed GladAtrix.
I'm wondering what the best method is to get back to 1.26 and then getting back my data after I do the Ubuntu hack?
I made back-ups with Titanium and CWM, but if I would restore my data, wouldn't that overwrite the Ubuntu hack?
Which program is better for a full system back-up/restore? CWM or Titanium?
I use TiBU and restore ONLY the apps NOT ANY DATA. Restoring system data or app data will likely get you lots of force closes. Its happened to me more than once on the Captivate and I'm not making that mistake again. I restore only the user apps w/ no data. So I'm stuck configuring my settings after every restore but Id rather do that than mess up the phone and be stuck and step one again.
Ok, so if I go back to 1.26 then I can use TiBU to re-install all my programs?
What I would like is something that essentially makes a "ghost" image of my phone so I can return to my exact settings, is that where CWM comes in?
I've recently lost the ability to enter webtop while trying to install Ubuntu. I'm thinking of just going back to 1.26 and starting over since I messed around with some other stuff and dont want to brick my phone later.

CWM will attempt to restore your phone to the exact state it was in when you made the backup, so cwm restore would revert any hack or any changes you have made since the backup.
Yes you can use TiBU to restore your user apps going from any upgrade/mod, even across ROMs. But like i said USER APPS w/o DATA ONLY. Do not restore data or system apps.
I was reading up info on if its possible to backup your data before rooting, since I know rooting will erase it, and I ran into this:
http://www.thedroiddemos.com/2011/08/14/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-3d-video-walkthrough/
I had no idea you could temp-root, and to be honest, at the moment, I just want to have root to perform a backup and remove some stock apps, not install a custom ROM or anything, but I have a few questions about this.
1. Whats with the section on clearing the temp root? Does it leave files on there even after the root is gone?
2. This temp root seems to be similar in theory to a theatered iphone jailbreak, but once I reboot my phone, does the root just go away and everything is back to normal, or do I have to use the SDK to boot my phone at all from then on? I am asking because of the clear temp root section.
3. Would a temp root cause any problems with future updates, or is there no way to know that?
4. Could I install an app that requires root access to work while temp rooted? I want to install Airblocker, but it needs root access. Do you only need root to install it, or would it stop working once I reboot and the root is gone?
5. The main reason I want to do this is to remove most of the stock apps Sprint installed that you cannot normally uninstall, will they just appear as uninstallable once rooted or do I have to use an app to remove them? And if so, what?
6. Do does this Titanium Backup basically create a copy of your entire current ROM so you can re-flash it and get your phone to exactly the state it was in when the backup was made, or does it only backup files and settings so you still need a working ROM and mostly the same apps installed in order to do a recovery? If one does flash a custom ROM, how can they recover their apps and all their settings (.... and videogame progress) to a different ROM?
That's cool, haven't seen that either. Looks nice!
1. All this does is return the original stock rom back to normal, just like it was freshly updated and turned on.
2. This being temp root, yes you will always have need of a computer after every reboot.
3. All rooting does is give access to folders previously locked. That being said, having access should not mess up an update, just do not CHANGE anything in those now accessible folders.
4. Most apps check for root access as soon as it runs, so yes, when rebooting you will have problems with root access.
5. You will have to use another app, titanium backup should do it, so should ROM toolbox.
6. Titanium takes the backup of the APK file and the data for that file. So, when reinstalling, it installs the apk first, then restores the data exactly as it was when it was backed up. It only backs ups apps, not the entire rom. You will need a recovery image to do this.
I recommend fully rooting your phone and switching to a re-analyzed stock rom, like mean rom or something, thats what I run. It has most of the stock apps removed and is fast as ****. When you make your backups before you root, just keep them there and restore them once you have a different rom.
Hope this helps a little.
So tonight I got tired of having issues with the Browser and general performance and I have been reading that a lot of people have seen better performance by performing a factory reset. The only problem is that currently unless you are unlocked you can't root (unless I am wrong). I was able to successfully root my tablet using the ASUS AppBackup application.
Before I performed a factory reset I used titanium backup to backup my apps and also used App Backup to backup the critical apps that I really needed restored in case a root method is not discovered soon. During the backup for the heck of it I decided to backup the Superuser app and OTA Rootkeeper application and app data (Note, I had full root access after upgrading to JB by using OTA Root Keeper).
After the backup completed, I backed up the backup file to my desktop and performed a factory reset. Once I went through the initial setup I decided to test if I could restore Superuser and OTA Rootkeeper and to my surprise I was able to (it took about 15 minutes to restore just those two programs & files) restore both applications and root along with it.
I have attached screen shots of OTA Rootkeeper and Titanium Backup both showing that my device is rooted.
Now I am wondering if I just got lucky or can we use this exploit to root the device. So I am looking to see if anybody is willing to try this and also if you are on JB without root, I wonder if somebody is willing to try to restore a backup that i have taken of both applications.
**I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DAMAGED TABLET**
This does not belong in the Dev forum...
And to explain your situation, a factory reset only wipes data (the /data partition)... the su binary is in the /system partition so you won't lose root... you could simply install the Superuser app from the Play Store and you would have root...
I have a stock I9300, un-rooted and up until 3 weeks ago had been happily using ADB and Samsung Kies to backup my phone.
Then the wonderful thing called Kies 3 happened - and since then I've not managed to get a single backup out of it.
It seems to backup some things but my applications it fails on yet won't tell me WHICH application is causing the issue (or if it's just Kies being Kies).
I'd like to be able to take backups of everything on my phone - something like Kies + ADB together, I know that with my phone being un-rooted, that application settings/data will not get backed up - I'm not sure what else wouldn't. But I'd rather not root my device.
What I'm asking for are recommendations for a SINGLE backup solution that would allow me to backup my phone to my PC, so that that can be included in my PC backups.
It's probably asking a lot just to find a single solution for this, I'd be happy with 2 solutions to achieve my aim as long as both of them worked together and backed up to the PC.
I'm happy enough to keep using ADB, except ADB doesn't backup SMS/MMS and ADB's Restore functionality is not at all granular - it's more like a 'my phone is boned, restore the entire thing' rather than restoring part of it.
If you recommend that I root my phone in order to get the single solution backup then I'd be happy to consider it. (If I were to root my phone, would restoring it or upgrading firmware be an issue from that point on - assuming I didn't want to use anything but stock firmware?)
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated, I'm going to take a look at Helium and see what that can do for me, although I'd prefer a PC-based backup solution.
Unrooted try Helium .

I've just tried Helium, it didn't work well - the desktop client/web interface never appeared in my IE10 or Firefox 25, so couldn't actually backup to PC. Another concern with it was it didn't explicitly say it backed up MMS, only SMS.
Does it do both?

IMy phone is connected to a Amazfit Verge smartwatch.
When I have an incoming call the ringtone is interrupted, when I power down the smartwatch the ringtone rings without interruption..
To see what's going on I want to reset my phone and just connect to the smartwatch to see if it works then.
If the reset does not work I want to go back to my previous setup asap.
I've rooted my previous phones and I was using twrp at that time, then it was easy to do a full system nandroid backup.
But I do not want to root or unlock my S9+ since this is irreversible.
I've been looking for a way to achieve this backup.
I can find a lot of programs but they all do need root or at least unlock.
It seems even adb backup ( but it will be deprecated) needs unlock.
I tried it and it says to unlock, even without that it takes a backup but it is only 160 kb in size.
If I need to unlock it will trip knock on the phone and wipe the device, that's just what I want to prevent
And I do not even know if adb takes a full system backup.
I found one method that seems interesting
Boot into twrp or cwm from a bootable SD card
But it says it is only applicable to a B&N Nook Color, is there another way to get this working on a S9+ or is there another way to achieve my goal?
Try Samsung Smart Switch.
Ok, but Samsung Smart Switch is only for a data backup. I need a full backup so I can restore my phone from that backup and all is done at once.
BUMP
if anyone can help
I want to move my app data(app logins from old phone(rooted) to new samsung phone(stock) without modifying it.
