no 4g anymore - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Anyone happen to see their 4g go away from their phone?
On 18.1 - just redownloaded it with all the default settings, only get 3g - looked at verizon's maps and i have 4g in my area, south east metro of the twin cities.
i had 4g lte before, but its not coming back..
thinking about downgrading to stock.

You might have a bad setting or radio. Download the app advanced signal status from play store & make sure you have proper bands selected. Which should be LTE,GSM,CDMA (auto PRL) under device settingss.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

Go to Settings/Mobile Network. Make sure you are on "LTE/CDMA/evdo". Download LTE Discovery from the Play Store. Go to the left page in the app and hit restart cell radio. If there's an LTE signal around you, that app will catch it.
If you're still not getting signal and you're sure you're in an LTE area, we can start exploring modems, EFS, etc.

Tried this, only was able to get 4g by selecting LTE in the list under device settings.

Will give this a try next and report back, thank you guys.

Tried both of them, the advanced signal one lets me select LTE and 4g does come on then, but then when i select auto, it goes back to 3g.
the lte discovery was able to reset it, but doesn't really do anything, still says 3g or hspre.
gonna try to download hyperdrive again and see what that does.
i tried all the nc5 modems from surges thread, here as well, no luck
any more sugguestions?

Do they charge you for a new sim?

Free if you call 611 and tell them you need a new sim, if you go to Verizon store I think there around 10 bucks with tax

Try a friends verizon sim first to see if that's your problem

Chatted with a Verizon tech and they tried their troubleshooting steps, looking for the apn, refreshing the sim on their end, it didn't work when i was chatting with them, so they are sending me a new sim, but maybe an hour later it refreshed and there was 4g again.
This might help some people that are having this problem.

I keep losing 4g, gonna try stock for a few days and see what it does.
hmmm

Still on 3G, even updated to the NC6.
I hate Verizon.

4G works find for me, might be your area

Mod to turn off 4G (use only 3g)

Hi there,
I know there are no options to turn off just 4G in the stock rom (without also disabling 3G), so I was wondering, is there an option to use only 3G and not 4G in any of the custom roms?
If not, can we do this by using *#*#4636#*#* options?
Thanks...

No this is not possible. The reason you can turn off 4G on sprint phones is because their 4G is wimax while 3g is cdma so they are completely different technologies. Tmo, on the other hand, is using the same technology as 3g just basically upping the available bandwidth on 3g towers. I guess it may be possible for someone to modify a rom (or possibly it would be the kernel) to run only on 3g but then the phone would not be capable of 4G at all.
Not sure why you would want to anyway as, since it uses the same network, the only thing that would change is slower Internet. It would not improve battery life over just running on 4G.

I have crap reception in my building. I went into network and selected WCDMA only. So it never tried to do Edge. Amazingly my phone now stays with at least 2 bars of 4G in my building and the battery lasts longer because it is not always switching between. I swear it just wanted to go to EDGE all the time, but obviously there is a 4G signal here... I toggle off GPS and Auto Sync while I am at work on the quicksense it is a vast battery improvement.

Actually, I have found with phones in the past that the EDGE modem does use far less power, if it is possible to turn off the 3G/4G. But I'm still awaiting my Amaze and can't say if there are any options for this - probably not.
The reason I am asking this is because I want to use my phone in Turkey, and since there is no 4G here, I can only use 3G...
So then my question becomes; can I use this phone without problems?

Right, I'm saying switching between 3g and 4G would not save battery. Switching between 2g and 3g/4G does save battery.

Looking at the specs, it appears that the phone should support the international 3g signal. However I'm not sure if there is an international model. If not, the phone would have to be unlocked to access 3g.

BTW, I suggest that you update your XDA profile to include your country, so people can know where you are located - it can make a difference in the answers you get. For example, my posts show that I am on T-Mobile and here in the US.
So, if I understand correctly, with phones that use 4G WiMAX or LTE, 4g CAN be turned off since it is a separate system from 3G. But in phones that use 4G as an upgraded version of 3G, if 4G is disabled, so is 3G..?
I just fear that, the phone (unlocked) will constantly look for a 4G signal when used in Turkey, and it won't be able to find it, and so not connect properly...
I've used 2G in the last two days just to tried out baterry without 4G. What I did is go to Setting=>Wireless&Networks=>Mobile Networks=>Network Mode and chose GSM only - that gave me 2G signal only
You can use several apps to get a shortcut which lead you straight to Networks to save you some clicks: Better Cut, Bar Control, WidgetSoid (give you a toogle on home screen to switch) ect ....

There is no difference between 3g and 4g - the modem is in HSPDA mode either way. It just depends on the cell tower infrastructure as to which speed is achieved.
There is no way to "disable" 4g and use 3g only. It IS possible to disable 3g and use only 2g.

If your willing to spend the money I believe verizon sells signal extenders. I don't know how much they are, how they work or if they extend 4G but it is an option.
You could also just use wifi like everyone else does when they're at home...

When on Wifi, it will work for texting too? (sorry, while I'm pretty educated in rooting and crap I'm not so much on the basics lol)

They extend 3G and voice only, not 4G. They also require you to have an existing broadband connection, because they connect to the Verizon network through the internet. They're basically like having your own micro-cell in your home.

If your signal is bad then the only choice you have is basically the network extender or using VOIP apps like gvoice.

Yeah, it isn't just the 4G it's signal period, I get 5 bars outside and it gets super random inside. Sometimes it drops, sometimes it's 1x then 3G then 4G...it's so random but super unreliable.

The network extenders cost $250 and work up to 100 feet, I get 4 bars(only during a call,0 bars if I'm not using it) all over my property where I used to get no signal. You do need a broadband internet connection and be able to get a gps signal indoors for them to work. The unit I bought in 2009 didn't have 3g data capabilites but Verizon at one time did sell them with 3g. Which in my opinion is useless as you need an internet connecdtion anyways for it to work so why not just use your wifi for data on the phone whcih is what I do. Yes its not 4g but its better than nothing at all which is what I had. And for me it's not just Verizon but Sprint and T-Mo too, It seems my house is a dead zone in my city for cell coverage.
I live in a fringe area for reception in my house so about 2 years ago I bought the Verizon extender ($100 at that time) and it got me from 1 bar to 3 bars. You do have to hook it up to your router and place a GPS locator in a nearby window for the unit to work. Whenever you connect to it, your phone will beep letting you know you are using the extender. Also, if you start a call in the house and then leave, at some distance from your house, like 200 feet, it will drop the call when it gets out of the extender's range.
But just two weeks ago I purchased a new NetGear router with extended range so I could get better WiFi reception throughout my house, and now the reception on my phone is at 5 bars and my reception is great--not a clue why. However, as pointed out, it doesn't seem to have any effect on 3G or 4G reception. I always use WiFi when I'm at home.
I have heard of people calling verizon to complain about the lack of service and Verizon basically giving them the extender. Might want to pursue that route in case it'll save you the 250.00

[Q] What are the APN settings for T-mobile HTC One to Dev Edition?

I want to increase my data speeds because I believe that ever since I converted my T-Mobile htc one to a dev edition through s-off, my data speeds have been slower. I noticed that it constantly switches between 3g and the H symbol now...
are there certain apn settings that I need to plug in ?
thanks in advance
Did you ever get this resolved? I'm in the same boat...
I initially had that problem after converting mine too, but flashing the T-Mobile radio fixed it completely with no need to edit the APN. Just flash the radio attached in the link below.

It still seems to be bouncing around between 3G and H a lot - something my Nexus S in the same location would not do, and it occasionally has a strong signal without a data connection whatsoever, which also did not occur with my Nexus S. There must be something else going on.

Best ROM for T-Mobile?

I've been using this phone with Beanstalk ROM for about 36 days. I love the features but I'm tired of the subpar data speeds.
I've had trouble getting 1Mb/s at times (including now) and never even 1/2 as fast as the 20Mb/s it got that first day that I tested it with my brother's SIM after I unlocked it the day I got it.
Even a fresh install of Beanstalk only got around 8Mb/s with JB radio or modded JB radio.
I'm seriously considering switching to modded stock for the better speeds. But I'll of course be testing the latest PA, CM, MOKEE and any others first.
Which ROM have you been using on T-Mobile? And what have your data speeds been like?
Thanks.
P.S. I live in Los Angeles.

AOSP (4.4.2) and TwistedKat. You should be getting 6-13MBs most of the time. I am using the AT&T JB hybrid radio and fast.t-mobile APN
The 20MBs was probably LTE speed with a fresh SIM (never installed in your G before). There are multiple threads around here about that. :crying:
Thanks.
I'll go ahead and do a speed test on fresh installs of stock and these and compare them.
Hopefully it wasn't LTE I was seeing.
Although that does fit the bill, the G had never had a T-Mobile sim before as it was freshly unlocked 5 minutes before.

So everytime I flash with phils advanced touch recovery it says "please upgrade binary" how do I do that?
Anyway, so (I think) I flashed the at&t JB modem and tried several different ROMs, fresh flashes with no gapps.
TwistedKat (I REALLY like it, but how do you disable the hardware button lights when using softkeys?) gave me 6.5Mb/s in the first test, but only 2.8Mb/s in the 3rd test. Hmm.
ArtMod gave me 3.5Mb/s in the first but 7.25Mb/s in the 2nd and 3rd tests. So far unfortunately the best.
I reflashed the modem in case I didn't at the beginning and flashed PA.
PA's signal icon wouldn't turn white but I was able to do a test anyway. It gave me 5.5Mb/s
I then flashed the modded JB modem and PA's signal still wouldn't turn white but it gave me 4.5Mb/s.
Reflashing PA didn't help.
SlimKat with modded JB modem also wouldn't turn the icon white... uh oh. gave me: 6.5Mb/s
Don't like slim Moving on...
CM11: icon also stays orange. 5.2Mb/s with stock JB radio no change. I'm going to stick with stock JB, seems like the best radio.
restored efs from weeks ago zip backup just in case that got messed up and that's why it stays orange.
Reflashed TwistedKat and data icon STILL staying orange!? (and gave me 5.4Mb/s) What's going on? I'm pretty sure it wasn't doing this before I reflashed the JB radio. And now no matter what I do it stays orange. :-/
AOSP 4.4: 4.5Mb/s
Rooted stock JB: Won't connect to data period. :'-( What do I do know? This sucks! No matter what I do, no matter which ROM, no matter what Radio it won't connect like it did before.
Edit: Restored my Beanstalk backup from this morning and the data icon turns white.
Edit 2: flashed stock rooted JB and it still doesn't connect.

Okay, before I restored my backup I never changed the APN on the stock ROM :silly: I think that might be why it doesn't connect to data. And every aosp rom I've checked the APN.
After wiping my restored backup I'm booting into Artmod again to see if it works.
Art mod connected to data. flashing stock and checking the APN settings,

But is there a fix for calls? Speaker phone is about half as loud as the Beanstalk speaker, and when I don't have it on speaker audio's non-existant in both directions.

No "LTE" icon - Galaxy A9(pro) 6 (Marshmallow) on T-Mobile (US) network

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here so please excuse me if this is a repetition or the wrong place.
I recently picked up the Galaxy A9(pro) 6 from Asia (Bangkok) while passing through duty-free. I must say I'm happy with the phone.
However, the "LTE" icon does not show on the status bar of the Galaxy A9(pro) 6. It only shows "4G". I am on with T-Mobile network in the US and my previous phone was Galaxy S4 (also from T-mobile) and it did show the "LTE" icon below "4G" in the status bar. We do get LTE coverage here where I am (my home) as per my previous usage of the Galaxy S4.
The Network mode is set to LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)
Is it that Galaxy A9(pro)6 does not show the "LTE" icon as in, it's not part of the feature?
Are my settings correct or do I need to do something to get LTE?
I don't seem to be having a problem with my data as the speed/performance is pretty good. But I'm not sure if this is just 4G or 4G LTE?
Could anyone help and explain what's going on?
Thank you,
Kevin
You can check in Settings / About Phone / Status and see if it's registering as LTE or HSPA/HSPA +. Most likely it does not have all of the frequencies available for a phone from Asia to get LTE here on T-Mobile. Most of them do not.

Hi es0tericcha0s,
The status option > SIM card status shows the following:
Network: T-Mobile
Singal Strength: -76 dBm 63 asu
Mobile network type: LTE
Service state: in service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile network state: connected
My phone number: 1- etc etc
Would you know what this means?
Thanks,
Kevin
That's good news. It means that your phone gets LTE. The 4g is just a graphical thing. In many countries the LTE just shows as 4g. This is determined by the system UI. If you are rooted and have a custom recovery then you might be able to change it using Xposed and a module add on.
It's probably not worth the trouble though as long as you know that 4g means LTE. When it's actually on 3g/4g (non LTE) then it'll most likely display as H / H+ for HSPA / HSPA+.
---------- Post added at 12:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
As far as enabling more LTE bands... It's possible on some phones. I haven't found any definitive details on it for your phone. You might see if you can open the service mode first by "dialing" *#0011#
If you can there might be a way...

It's probably not worth the trouble though as long as you know that 4g means LTE. When it's actually on 3g/4g (non LTE) then it'll most likely display as H / H+ for HSPA / HSPA+.

As far as enabling more LTE bands... It's possible on some phones. I haven't found any definitive details on it for your phone. You might see if you can open the service mode first by "dialing" *#0011#
If you can there might be a way...

Hi es0tericcha0s,
Sorry about the late reply, life got the best of me.
I tried the code you gave but it gives the message "invalid MMI code". I guess it's fine as long as it's LTE where ever available.
Hope all's well with you and thanks!
Best regards,
Kev

If you are rooted, then there are a couple of apps that will be able to bring up those menus and/or find the specific codes to access the needed menus... Since we don't have the A9 here, I am not familiar with the little differences in the firmware like that.
