"Where's my KitKat" Campaign - Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom

Some of you may know me from the Motorola days as one of the guys that started a campaign against Moto for dropping the ICS update for Tegra2 devices worldwide known as "Support My Moto" that worked in partnership with "Update my Moto". This time it's and that have some explaining to do.
The AT&T C105A (Galaxy S4 Zoom) owners need to raise some hell as both Samsung and AT&T are lying about what Android version it has. They officially list it as having 4.4 KitKat. It does not have 4.4 KitKat and cannot even be updated to 4.4 KitKat at this time. Under many state laws this constitutes false advertising and is grounds for legal action.
The possible claim of "Samsung never built updates for the SM-C105A" cannot be taken at valid either, as TelCel (Mexico) has sent out at least two updates to their SM-C105A.
Samsung Official Specs as of July 17th 2014
AT&T Official Specs as of Sept 2nd 2014 (older versions will not load for some reason)
Inaction gives the impression that not supporting a device and listing false official specifications is OK. So if you do not want this type of bait and switch to keep going on, post on AT&T's and Samsung's G+ & Facebook pages, and tag them on Twitter. Let them know about how this is unacceptable and the SM-C105A needs to start receiving updates to 4.4 KitKat immediately.

This may not be a U.S. only issue. So if you have a S4 Zoom and are not on KitKat, use web.archive.org and check to see if they did the same in your region

Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. I'm an owner of an AT&T SM-C105A and not having KITKAT has become totally unacceptable.
I've had the phone for nearly a year, i was burned before by Motorola and the lack up updates. The day i purchased my Zoom i was promised KITKAT was arriving "Any Day Now". Well it's been months and months and there is no word from AT&T. I'm thinking of trying to return the phone to them as they are failing on their promise. So frustrating.
I'll call them today and raise some hell. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just for everyone's info, kitkat puts write restrictions to the ext sd card, so it does have its disadvantages for some non stock apps.

Copied from my post to the AT&T G+ page
"I'll give both Samsung and AT&T til 10/10/14 to address the matter publicly. After that, complaints will be filed with the proper agencies. For me that would be FCC, FTC, BBB, California Dept. of Consumer Affairs."
@claptnei
Thanks for the heads up. With the AT&T version I'd expect even more restrictions, like security check bootloader making even rooting or bloat removal a softbrick risk like their 4.2.2 firmware is.

UPDATE
I've given them a couple extra days to get this straight with no results. Even after a chat with Tech Support they seem to have no clue as to whether KitKat is even a possibility or not.

Update
AT&T as of 9:40AM PST
I was forwarded your information regarding wanting to update both of your Galaxy s4 Zoom's to KitKat. I'm aware of the page that shows that we offer 4.4 for the s4 Zoom and I've reached out to the correct people to get this updated. We have other AT&T Pages that state the latest version is 4.2.2.
So I can understand the confusion. It is true that Samsung is pushing out KitKat for the s4 Zoom. However, ss of right now AT&T is not releasing the KitKat update for the s4 Zoom until all the bugs have been taken care of.
I apologize for any troubles this may have caused you. Have a great rest of your day.

So, no update for you and enjoy any of those security holes your device might have that have made the news in the *past year* because we can't be bothered to push out any updates or patches.
The "bugs" are probably related to AT&T's bull**** bloat as there are only a very small number of reports of any issues of any kind with any other S4 Zoom running KitKat.
Still can't find a public page that lists 4.2.2 as the official current firmware anywhere on their site.

Two weeks later and the page that customers see still says 4.4 KitKat. To add insult to injury. A brand new AT&T S4 Zoom now sells for less ($179.99) than an older refurbished 3G only version (@$300).
I still have yet to hear back from the FTC, BBB and other agencies. I doubt I ever will as lying to customers is business as usual in the U.S..

No apologies, no "our bad, just fixed the specs and hope those that that got scammed don't notice it.
From my G+
AT&T #Samsung S4 Zoom specs get downgraded to 4.2.2 Jellybean. This is of course after months of wrongly being sold as running 4.4 KitKat when it was not.
October 29th 2014 (The specs were still saying 4.4 when checked on November 9th)

Sadly, it took me taking this issue to +Android Police, chatting with +Artem Russakovskii, and a threat by them of making AT&T publicly lose face by exposing them to the entire Android community via Android Police. This never should have had to be taken this far and resolved when I approached them in September.
The Official Samsung page still lists the AT&T S4 Zoom as having 4.4 KitKat.

Buying an S4 & Firmware

Question, what is the likelihood of buying a new GS4 from a vendor and not have the newest software on the phone so that I can unlock the bootloader? Are all phones being shipped with the locked bootloader?
I recently got a "Like new replacement" from Verizon and it came without the update. I immediately turned airplane mode on and had no problem not taking the update.
I've heard other users suggesting that the version installed depends on where you buy it (i.e. from verizon or best buy).
I've also read stories from users that when buying from Verizon the salesperson will update the phone because they think the user wants the update and they do not ask first.
Hope this helps!
Got my S4 from Verizon Wireless online (delivered Monday). Did not cone with update (asked me to update right after I activated).

I think it's a pretty good bet if you go to a Verizon store and get a 16GB model you're likely to get a non-upgraded one. Even better, search for a store that you think would see less foot-traffic and go there. Going there closer to when they close will make it much less likely that the CSR who sets up your phone will bother with the update (though you can always say your in a rush to get somewhere once they get the phone turned on).
The 32GB models seem to be much more likely to ship with the update pre-installed from what I've heard.
White models are *probably* less popular, so stores will hold onto their stock longer than the black ones, so that may help tip the scales as well.
Good luck. I wouldn't wait too long to upgrade if you're dead set on having an unlocked bootloader.
I got a black 32gb 2 weeks ago and it did not have the update. The 32 gb is only available from Direct Fill warehouses ordered from Verizon themselves AFAIK. So there's not going to be any sitting around in boxes in a store from an old shipment. So when they replenish stock in the warehouse, that's what your phone will be, brand new stock. The 16 gb, however, is likely to have been there awhile. If you go to Best Buy, you can ask them to turn the phone on before they activate it and check the version. I don't see why they'd refuse you, and I highly doubt even Verizon salespeople have any idea of what the new update means and why we don't want it.
That all being said, in my previous experience, they don't typically make the phones with new updates pre-installed until there's a new Android version. They can force the update as soon as you activate it, so there's no reason for them to make Samsung change the factory images they JTAG it with in the first place until there's a significant change (since it's always best to wipe when upgrading Android versions, don't wanna do that in the middle of someone setting up their phone). And they certainly aren't going to open up boxes and start updating them, because again, most everyone will take the update out of the box.
That being said, I would still jump now if you want this phone. There will eventually be a point when all of them come with a newer software version, and there's no way to gauge progress toward another workaround or a true unlock, so you can't bet on that. There are some reports to suggest people got the phone with the update already installed, but that seems to be more refurbished phones, since it looks like even Verizon or Samsung themselves couldn't actually roll the phones back to an older build once the signature was blacklisted in the hardware. So you should be alright ordering now, just make sure you get a new one, and don't put your SIM in. Check the version, if it has ME7 already, take it back and say the phone doesn't perform well even after a factory reset, and you've heard it's likely that update, so you'd like one without it. If it is not updated yet, root it immediately, and block or remove SDM.apk and FWupgrade.apk, and then and only then is it safe to activate the phone.

Lag stopped all of a sudden ??

Lag has been a minor nuisance since I've had the phone.
But it seems to have stopped all of a sudden either yesterday or today.
This happen to anyone else? Anyone know why?

I was about to post a follow up on the tweaks and ART runtime (that had been working almost flawlessly on my device for almost 24 hours straight now) and saw this thread.
Even though the improvements given by ART and some RAM/Display/Scrolling tweaks were phenomenal, they still had moments of minor stuttering once or twice in an hour's time.
Today however, I noticed my device charging faster, not getting as hot, etc.
Is anyone aware of something that could have caused this?
2 of my close friends have the VZW G3 as well, on the latest firmware. I'm going to send them a text and see if they noticed anything different today.
I'll report back.
I am on 10b firmware, which the phone came with. I did not know there we're any other firmwears for the Verizon LG G3.

They are suppose to be working with LG continuously to make sure all the firmware improvements LG makes in response to the many issues us users/beta-testers have found and reported are updated onto our phones asap.
Particularly since unlike T-Mobile they have required our Verizon G3s be locked down so we cannot update them ourselves...
In reality, Verizon is happy with whatever shipped initially on the phones since everyone who got one is stuck with it for about two years and there is no revenue from updated firmware, so why should they give a damn ?
We might get a Kit Kat update to 4.4.4 maybe about the time L is released, and if Verizon is feeling unusually benevolent, eventually, an L update maybe 6 months later. Or not.
Verizon does not care at all about Android customers, even though we are the majority of their users. You can be sure they will be all over the iPhone6 phones when they release in a couple of weeks though.

100% agree with everything you said but comparing it to iOS is kind of unfair. Those updates comes straight from Apple. Although the majority of Verizon phones are Android, they sell more iPhones than any other device by far, even Sammy flagships. That gives Apple the leveraging power to be able to give straight updates and have no branding on their phones.
Apple produces updates and tests them for the various iPhone models, ok. Do they then send them out to Verizon and ATT and every other cell company that allows the use of iPhones for review and pre-OTA testing for "network compatibility" ? I don't think so, I think they update from their own servers directly to user's phones, but I am not sure.
For Android hardware vendors, though, if they even create updates for Verizon models, they have to, for some reason, go through Verizon to reach their own customers. LG cannot send OTA updates to LG customers, because Verizon won't let them ? Instead we have situations like with the LG G3, where T-Mobile and ATT and European users have updated firmware up to v10j while we are lingering with 10b still. The South Koreans even have 10k I think.
There are some significant improvements in these updates, but Verizon LG customers may never see them, because of Verizon. That is very annoying, to me, and the minute they take away my unlimited data I am gone never to return.
The Verizon LG G3 works with 4gLTE on Cricket here, and H, and Edge. That's on ATT towers. I am using that now. It also works on T-Mobile, though I am unclear about what connection types are supported. I heard LTE works there too. If I leave Verizon, I'll just stick a pre-paid SIM in and that will be fine.

I see you're still lurking around the G3 forum... You getting one??
It is a bummer to not have have the options we had on our S4s but I still love this phone with Root and xposed and I'm quite happy.
Our G3 devs are still saying they're going to be able to unlock these things which is cool... Anyways just wanted to say what up!

I tested my Verizon G3 with my T-Mobile prepaid sim and got better 4gLTE download and upload and ping than I got native on Verizon here.
So, both AT&T and T-Mobile LTE work on this phone.

Right now, it's looking like the G3. I'm still waiting to see the Note 4 tomorrow and the Moto X+1 on Thursday because hey why not. I doubt the Note 4 will be tempting enough to actually accept running stock TW or even hoping for a Hashcode disciple to get Safestrap on there, then I'm still really limited. The Moto X+1 probably won't have a removable battery, which is a problem. It's very annoying to use my One Max with it's embedded battery compared to S4 where I never think about it.
The ZL battery for the G3 just came out and it's looking like good days are coming in the bootloader situation, so I'll probably be pulling the trigger soon enough.

Which is odd, being that the update rolled out at the beginning of the month. You would think the Edge + would be a part of that rollout.
Great no Root, no marshmallows. Love the phone but this should be getting newest sw since it came out with note 5 and they're supposed to be flagship phones but vzw is taking a top spec phone and lock it down so you can't take advantage of the upgraded hardware on the phone.
We jumped on a new, plus sized version, full feauture new tech phone. We spent extra for the phone foregoing the micro sd card and user accessible battery so at least let us experience the benefits of having this phone with software that can exploit these features instead of keeping us on lollipop and locking down the bootloader and preventing root. The s5 and s4 even in lolipop are rootable along with most of the s6 and s6 edge by other US providers. At least let us utilize the features we paid the extra money for the edge plus especially mine is the 64gb version and i would've gotten the s6 edge w 128gb if i knew vz would neuter the phone capabilities.

Really? Samsung needs to release Marshmallow on the hardware before Verizon can - so don't knock Verizon for "locking it down"
You don't need root to "utilize the features you paid extra money for."
Yes, it would be nice to have a rootable phone, but you knew, or at least should have known, going in that vzw phones are now nearly impossible to root.
Your heart is in the right place, but your arguments make no sense
I gave up my Note 4 Developer edition.. Which had a open bootloader and all that. I came fo this understanding I wasn't going to root, especially since theres no SDcard. I came for the pay features and other goodies. Im not missing root as I thought I would as every phone ive had since android 1.6, i rooted.

Will Sprint overlook G3 for OTA Marshmellow update?

With other carriers already prepping/pushing out Android 6.0 to the G3, I still have seen nothing from Sprint on Android 6.0 for the G3. I did hear the G4 will get 6.0 soon, however.... will Sprint be ignoring the G3 for the Android 6.0 updated ROM in favor of selling more G5 units on launch?
Not really a Q&A thread, I just wanted everyone's insight and opinions on the matter. I run into this issue with Sprint specifically when it comes to OTA updates....
Not really interested in custom ROMs at this point, FYI, so a heads up before you think about posting links for me here

Only Verizon has released 6.0 on the G3 so far. Give it more time. Sprint is probably having issues with the wifi calling or something.
My gf has the g4 on T-Mobile & just got the marshmallow update. I've read various places that the g3 for all the major carriers will get it eventually. Sprint is generally the slowest out of them all to roll out updates. So to answer your question, yes we'll get it but who knows when.

It is usually AT&T who is the last. I got lollipop on my work AT&T G3 6 months after the other 3 carriers had it. T-Mobile is not listing Marshmallow on their site yet. This is last week's article showing updates: https://www.androidpit.com/lg-g3-android-update
The Sprint G4 was updated to Marshmellow back just before Christmas. And has got another update the start of this month. They seem to have not updated their RDF to reflect that. On the G3 front there has also been no action of the RDF :/ I'm hoping they just stopped using that and are doing internal testing we just don't know about but I'm not really hopeful. I'm pretty disappointed in LG and Sprint, I can live without OS goodies but for the love of all give us the monthly security patches.
the LG G Stylo received the OTA around last month on Sprint/Boost then T-Mobile/Metro right after soo.....us on the G3 might get it before T-Mobile again
I think it's safe to say none of the carriers release them fast enough for any of us. T-Mobile might not list it on their site but her phone definitely got the marshmallow update. I can provide a screenshot later when she gets home. Not that any of that matters, as it's not our network or phone.

Right as N is coming about, the last official update will be M. Hey I still have mine and love it.
Why does everyone loose their minds on updates being pushed OTA !?!?!
If you're rooted 99% of the time you skip the OTA to keep from breaking root AND being rooted you can upgrade at your leisure because there is always a port and CM.
There is already and official CM13 and other 6.0 ROMS so who cares what Sprint does unless you like the bloatware.

I think they got it all wrong. The guy asking the question tweeted with the hashtag AndroidO. So supposedly he meant the next version of Android, the one after Nougat?
And then the Moto-team didn't get it at all either and replied if he meant Android 7 (Nougat)...
And gsmarena happily reports this news and doesn't even mention that. Oh well.
Another G4 waiting. I've bought it recently just because it's one of the cheapest good smartphone with N coming.
it popped up on my phone on the first startup, and i canceled it about 5 hours ago. I was rooting it. it doesn't pop up anymore. I just got my phone this morning from ebay.

Postponed for end of february
If it rolls out in february, it must be 7.1.1. If it's not, it will be a disappointment, seriously, this is a joke.
Spoiler: At the end of february, update posponed to march, then to april, etc...
