Hey there,
I've recently switched from Viper Rez ROM to one of the vanilla CM9 builds, but can't get 4G working on it. When I switch to LTE mode under the mobile network settings it goes to Roaming and drops connection entirely. I'm able to get 3G fine. I am on the firmware from the official ICS release as far as I know. I've tried disabling and re-enabling Airplane Mode as was suggested in another thread but it didn't do anything for me.
Any other suggestions? I love running CM9 but no 4G is kind of a deal breaker, and I know it's supposed to be working.
Thanks!
With AOSP and AOKP Roms if you even venture into the mobile network settings you will lose 4G. the only way I know how to get it back is to flash back to a sense Rom, ensure the settings are switched to include 4G and then flash back to CM9.
Really? That's a bummer. I like to keep mine on 3G since the 4G radios drain battery faster and I don't really need 4G service most of the time. I'll try what you said and see if it fixes. Thanks! In the meantime, other suggestions are welcome.
well that's not entirely true. yes, for aokp, but cm9 builds don't seem to have as much issue with it.
i'm referring to the previous post that said that you lose 4g if you enter mobile network settings. not the problem you are having of not being able to get on 4g
Hey folks, any ideas why my APN will auto-switch to non LTE - Verizon Internet every fourth or fifth time I unlock the screen? It's been doing this for about two weeks since I flashed CM10.1 and Devil Kernel. I've since tried going back to TW as well as wiping everything on the phone including system prior to flashing different ROMs. Right now I'm running CM10.1 08-13 nightly with Plasma 1.67 kernel and it's doing the same thing.
At first I thought it could be signal strength causing it to not connect to LTE, but it's completely switching APN to non-LTE. At wit's end right now because no combination of stock TW or CM10.1 will let it stick.
Guess I should ask my question:
Is there a way to make the APN stick to LTE - Verizon Internet instead of letting it arbitrarily switch to EHRPD - Verizon Internet, which drops my LTE connection? Anyone have any ideas as to why it's switching on its own in the first place? When I'm on the EHRPD - Verizon Internet the phone doesn't seem to ever switch back to LTE, even though what I read on the 'net says it should be switching back and forth depending on signal. I have to go into the *#*#4636#*#* menu and switch it back to LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) as it has switched to CDMA auto (PRL) when on EHRPD - Verizon Internet.

I am having the same issue, but if I force it into LTE through the test menu I can get data at 4g speed. But it shows no signal.
I thnk it is suppose to be on the VZWINTERNET. I just had this issue with carbon, and I figured out the network options I were using was wrong. I kept choosing LTE/CDMA, but it should've been LTE/CDMA/EvoD and once I did that i got snapepd back into 4g.

On the advanced data menu that is what mine is showing, when ever I select the LTE apn it bounces back to a 3g one.
Got a new sim card and the issue is fixed.

When you flashed the ROM originally and started having this problem were you asked to activate your phone. I am having the same issue after flashing a 4.3 ecliptic one ROM on my HTC One. I was running the same ROM but 4.2.2 before flashing. The first thing I was required to do was *228 for activation. I used option 2 to update the roaming capabilities and after that I could no longer stay on LTE. I was pushed over to ehrpd. Even when I tried LTE only using the method listed above I could not get a connection to the internet (even though it showed APN= LTE).
I will probably just go to VZW and get another SIM card for LTE.
Any thoughts would appreciated.

You will need a new sim. You don't have to activate and especially not update via *228 with a 4G sim card.

Thanks. It appears I am not the only one having this issue.

Although, I am afraid that I might still need to go to VZW.
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Note, but definitely not new to Android or XDA.
I've got the phone "unlocked" via the radio trick here: http://str8pt.blogspot.com/2013/06/unlock-simfree-method-for-galaxy-note.html
I've rooted it, and have tried a few different ROMs with different radios.
The Blaze radio (and others) I mention are from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679722
I am in Melbourne, FL in case location makes any difference.
Here's what I am seeing:
CyanogenMOD 10.1.3 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting only EDGE speeds. Using "Official TMO ICS Radio" (I'm guessing it's the one from the TMO Note?) , I get NO connectivity.
Stock 4.1.2 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting 4G, however the signal meter is totally empty as if there's just enough signal to register connectivity but not enough to register a single bar. Download speeds are abysmal in comparison to other TMO phones I've used here - I am seeing downloads at around 1.5MB - other phones are 6, 7, even 8 MB.
My question are as follows:
Using CyanogenMod, should I be using the i717 version? Or the TMO Note version? Is there anything I can do with ANY particular radio to get better than EDGE?
Using the Stock ROM (or a variant), is there are a way to get the signal cluster to function properly? Any way to get better download speeds?
I read that the TMO 4.0.4 stock ROM image can be installed via ODIN and apparently it works correctly (if I am reading correctly) - would the TMO 4.1.2 stock ROM image be installed via ODIN and work as well? (If I can even find a full download of it?)
Should I expect to have to re-flash the radio each time with each ROM? From what I've seen, if I don't, I lose any ability to get 4G until I flash it again. I'd be stuck on EDGE.
Thanks so much guys! I've searched and read till my eyes are crossing and not finding the answers I need. I hope that with the experience that can be found in this forum maybe I can get where I need to be!
Thanks again!

I recently obtained an I717 too, unlocked it, and got it functioning with my tmobile prepaid plan. I'm still on gingerbread rom and using KID radio with decent success. just 4G , using WCDMA band 1700 (*#2263#). I get consistent decent speeds but not LTE.
The hands down best modem to use is UCMB4 - Google it. But it can cause problems with some jelly bean ROMs.
If you want jb more than anything, play with modems. If you want speed AND stability, go jellybean sandwich or black star X with the aforementioned modem.
If you want WiFi calling download skeleton key.
Ucmb4 with any of those three and the proper APN will get you LTE as fast as it's offered in your area

Hi Anthony820,
I'm currently running your Skeleton Key ROM - not bad at all! But definitely want to try to get CyanogenMod or PACman JB running.
I'll give the UCMB4 radio a shot this evening !
When I had service with TMO (via Straight Talk) I had the best luck with UVLG3.

I've got CM 10.1.3 for i717 installed right now, going through and testing each and will post results.

At the time I was running CM 10.1 nightlies.
Uvlg3, if I recall, will get you good down speed, but mediocre up. Otherwise, it's a solid choice and may be more cooperative with jb builds.

Looks like you're right - here's just 4 radios that I just tested:
UCMB4 - EDGE only
UVLG3 - 3G/DC(WTF??)/H+ 6.01Mbps up/1.07 Mbps down
UVLE1 - Phone freezes, locks on black screen, had to pull battery
ICSBLAZE - 3G/DC/H+ Network communication issues message when running speedtest.
By the way, what the heck is "DC" on the network indicator where 3G or H/H+ normally is? I've never seen that before!

I believe It stands for dual channel.
By the way, just checked and CM's WiFi tethering is working as well - nice!
Not sure what I did differently this time but this evening the signal indicator is showing real signal strength, equivalent to what I was seeing on another phone on CM.

Good to hear. I believe not seeing any signal strength is a known issue specifically with the Blaze modem.

If you're on a modem that'll work with LTE, yep. Otherwise HSPA or Edge.
Make sure, I forget and my Note no longer has service, that the top option is set under Network Type or whatever it is. Network Mode? I don't know, you'll figure it out. The thing that lets you pick between GSM, WCDMA etc..etc..

Ok, I got it figured out. I am on the FAST APN and set to WCDMA/LTE . I'm on 3G/H+ here in the house now - will see how it goes when I head out tomorrow.
Either way, I think it's time to make a backup - it's running marvelously and doing everything I would expect it to!
NOTE: Newest PAC ROM (4.3) running smoothly with UVLG3 modem on T-Mobile without issue
[EDIT]
Scratch that - it worked great until I did the first reboot - then it wouldn't boot up again, even with a battery pull.

I went ahead and flashed UCMB4 and was showing 4g lte after reboot. my phone info setting says WCDMA preferred (it shows no LTE option at all ) and the *#2263# menu setting says "automatic". on the fast.t-mobile.com apn
I use UCMD3 and get LTE almost everywhere. Hellybean is a pretty good ROM, try it out!
I've been using this phone with Beanstalk ROM for about 36 days. I love the features but I'm tired of the subpar data speeds.
I've had trouble getting 1Mb/s at times (including now) and never even 1/2 as fast as the 20Mb/s it got that first day that I tested it with my brother's SIM after I unlocked it the day I got it.
Even a fresh install of Beanstalk only got around 8Mb/s with JB radio or modded JB radio.
I'm seriously considering switching to modded stock for the better speeds. But I'll of course be testing the latest PA, CM, MOKEE and any others first.
Which ROM have you been using on T-Mobile? And what have your data speeds been like?
Thanks.
P.S. I live in Los Angeles.

AOSP (4.4.2) and TwistedKat. You should be getting 6-13MBs most of the time. I am using the AT&T JB hybrid radio and fast.t-mobile APN
The 20MBs was probably LTE speed with a fresh SIM (never installed in your G before). There are multiple threads around here about that. :crying:
Thanks.
I'll go ahead and do a speed test on fresh installs of stock and these and compare them.
Hopefully it wasn't LTE I was seeing.
Although that does fit the bill, the G had never had a T-Mobile sim before as it was freshly unlocked 5 minutes before.

So everytime I flash with phils advanced touch recovery it says "please upgrade binary" how do I do that?
Anyway, so (I think) I flashed the at&t JB modem and tried several different ROMs, fresh flashes with no gapps.
TwistedKat (I REALLY like it, but how do you disable the hardware button lights when using softkeys?) gave me 6.5Mb/s in the first test, but only 2.8Mb/s in the 3rd test. Hmm.
ArtMod gave me 3.5Mb/s in the first but 7.25Mb/s in the 2nd and 3rd tests. So far unfortunately the best.
I reflashed the modem in case I didn't at the beginning and flashed PA.
PA's signal icon wouldn't turn white but I was able to do a test anyway. It gave me 5.5Mb/s
I then flashed the modded JB modem and PA's signal still wouldn't turn white but it gave me 4.5Mb/s.
Reflashing PA didn't help.
SlimKat with modded JB modem also wouldn't turn the icon white... uh oh. gave me: 6.5Mb/s
Don't like slim Moving on...
CM11: icon also stays orange. 5.2Mb/s with stock JB radio no change. I'm going to stick with stock JB, seems like the best radio.
restored efs from weeks ago zip backup just in case that got messed up and that's why it stays orange.
Reflashed TwistedKat and data icon STILL staying orange!? (and gave me 5.4Mb/s) What's going on? I'm pretty sure it wasn't doing this before I reflashed the JB radio. And now no matter what I do it stays orange. :-/
AOSP 4.4: 4.5Mb/s
Rooted stock JB: Won't connect to data period. :'-( What do I do know? This sucks! No matter what I do, no matter which ROM, no matter what Radio it won't connect like it did before.
Edit: Restored my Beanstalk backup from this morning and the data icon turns white.
Edit 2: flashed stock rooted JB and it still doesn't connect.
What are your APN settings? Are you using a newer micro SIM or an older cut SIM?

Unfortunately we can't have LTE on TMo at this time. Download an app called Advance Signal Status (free in Play Store) and see what the 2G/3G section displays about signal strength.
Also network type should toggle between UMTS and HSPA+

Okay, before I restored my backup I never changed the APN on the stock ROM :silly: I think that might be why it doesn't connect to data. And every aosp rom I've checked the APN.
After wiping my restored backup I'm booting into Artmod again to see if it works.
Art mod connected to data. flashing stock and checking the APN settings,
I'm using TwistedKat but the call speaker volume is really low compared to Beanstalk. Is there a way to increase it?

So according to that app I'm receiving no LTE data at all. Bummer.
But is there a fix for calls? Speaker phone is about half as loud as the Beanstalk speaker, and when I don't have it on speaker audio's non-existant in both directions.

Hello I am running alliancerom and I do not get 3g. Is there a modem for that where i get 3g and 4g on tmobile? when my phone was on the internation rom it got 3g/h+ ect. Is there a modem for it? Im running alliancerom's newest version on xda. Any imput would be great. Thank you.
H=3g H+=4g
Stock ROM (or network indicator unmodified ROMs) always show 4g. You don't see the 3g because it's pointless to show and only being used when no data activity is happening. 3g on T-Mobile is now only used for low data communication that doesn't require high speed data. It's like that to save power.
