If you're rooted you can install different boot animations. Is fairly easy to do. They're located in /System/Media
Rename the stock ones like already suggested and then using a Root Explorer or ES File Manager with Root Features enabled....place the new one into that folder and set permissions to RW-R-R and reboot and enjoy

Wondering if there is way to change the Cm7 boot animation to some different. Have one downloaded and tried copy it to the system/media location where the original is located but wouldn't allow rename or move.

did you set your file manager to r/w? its probably r/o right now.
if you dont know how to set it, use root explorer (which gives you an option at the top that allows you to toggle between the two)
thanks now if i can only figure out how to get sound to work with it

Go to system/media and delete the bootanimation.zip
Reboot
Enjoy
(i think that this makes it default to a completely.stock android animation, i have never been able to find where that is stored, it just shows the word "android" written in a greenish color,.slightly shimmering, i enjoy it. I usually delete the bootanimation.zip on any ROM i run just so i can have that plain one i mentioned)

Get root explorer and make sure you have root permissions. Also make sure the folder bootanimation.zip is in had RW permissions.
I'm on OF1 and rooted. Anyone know how to get rid of the red Verizon splash screen when the phone is powered on?
Download attachment below and replace all files on system > media folder. set permissions to 0644 and reboot.
How do I set permissions? Also, what does this replace the Verizon splash screen with?

Use any file explorer with root functions. Boot animation came from stock i9505 lollipop.
Can I just use Flashfire and just flash the boot animation zip using that and reboot?

Would ES File Explorer be able to do this? If not, which file explorer would you recommend?
I did not see the original bootanimation.zip file under /system/media, so I renamed the four samsung files (bootsamsung11; bootsamsungloop22; bootsamsungmini33 and bootsamsungminiloop44) from .qmg to .bak, then copied the new boot animation zip file I grabbed to /system/media. I still have the Samsung audio but just black screen before it went right to home screen...no new animation. Did I miss a step? I'm not finding posts on doing this with Flashfire (which would seem logical since it would be so easy). If I go this route, I would copy the boot animation.zip to /system/media, then run Flashfire and flash it , correct? Thats it?

The boot animation i uploaded is not flashable with any recovery tools .Just use root browser/explorer. Extract all the qmg files and replace the qmg's in system>media folder.
I did NOT find a bootanimation.zip in /system/media. All the sites and videos that describe doing this refer to it. I found one place on XDA indicating that the GS4 does NOT uhave the bootanimation.zip file and instead uses only the qmg files...that was what was throwing me off.. I found the Android Lollipop bootup (that uses qmg files), replaced the existing qmg files.... and it worked.
Then I explored how to change the audio as it was silent. I made a custom .ogg file using the THX movie theatre intro (you'll recognize it instantly when you hear it) which seemed like the perfect techie bootup sound. Found a site to cut its length (its a bit too long to match the boot up animation) and Presto!! I have this amazingly cool bootup animation with the perfect audio to match! The audio file won't upload here but you can get it here: http://www.thx.com/thx-deep-note/
Use an mp3 grabber such as http://www.listentoyoutube.com/, then cut it down (I cut off the first 10-12 seconds) using http://mp3cut.net/. Convert it to an ogg (http://www.zamzar.com) and replace the existing PowerOn.ogg in /system/media/audio/ui with the new file (renamed to match). Rename and keep the old one as a .bak file in case you ever want that Samsung sound again.

Es file explorer will/can if that directory exists. Enable root mode to access system files. Be careful not to change anything unless you are very sure you know what is is.

I modified this one from another zip I found online to not "loop" and drop the framerate to 30fps. Backup your bootanimation and shutdownanimation zip files in /system/media and replace with these, set permissions, and reboot.

I swear I'm not just trying to be ignorant or beat you up here by saying this, but I just thought it was kind of funny because you basically just asked a question and then answered yourself all in one sentence. Anyway to answer your question (again lol) though, yes you do need to have root in order to do this because without it the directory where the files need to be pasted will be "read only", and you will not the have the access needed in order to change it. Hope it helps [emoji106].

Boot splash needed to hide the orange triangle.
I came from the note 5 and the were severeral roms and an aroma zip that totally modded the way androids looked just starting up. No lg. no t mobile. no triangle. I wish i even knew how to start out or who to pass the information along to. To have some overall pleasant experience.

Needs to be rooted. After you back up and replace the files, you need to reboot into TWRP, find the files, hit chmod and set to 644

It's a locked file system by design. There's a module for magisk that allows you to change it.
