S3 does not flash a new image - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I just got some problems with my S3.
Its the international EUR Version. I9300.
Came from Cyanogen MOD and has TWRP Recovery installed.
Now I tried to flash a new rom, but Log says "Failed". Seems because of Permissions.
See my LOG attached. My Image I want to flash:
EUR-I9300XXUGNG3-20140901145954

Is the file suitable for flashing in recovery, or was it supposed to be via odin?
Is your recovery the latest version?
Try using mobile Odin.

This was a good information.
I just installed the stock rom, but it keeps rebooting....

I wouldn't have tried this as your phone is i9100P, although I know the difference isn't that big.
Also, was your phone rooted? It had to have been rooted beforehand.

Hi, yes it was rooted prior to this, but i thought the only difference was that the P version had NFC - but now it seems I am stuck at the boot screen - any ideas? I would appreciate it a lot!

Yes, that should help. Btw what version you are downloading? 4.0.3 or 4.0.4?

I am downloading 4.0.3 from here: devsrom4android.blogspot (DOT)co (DOT) uk/2012/06/i9100pxxlph-o2-uk-samsung-galaxy-s2-gt.html
4.0.3 is what I previously had, and I believe that was the exact firmware I had on the phone (o2 NFC version)

That's your problem. You were on 4.0.3, which is ICS.
The instructions at galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-rooted-galaxy-s2-i9100/ don't specify, but they are for Gingerbread ONLY. The recovery kernel contained within that zip package is ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4, which is for Gingerbread.
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) is the updated version of that recovery kernel for ICS.
You don't have to flash the full firmware, just flash a kernel that is meant to work with ICS and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice - but i already have the stock ROM on an SD card so i think i will flash this. Problem is i cannot get CWM to read from the external SD card, so i cannot locate the zip and install it - help?
EDIT: if i install the kernel you gave me the link to ([KERNEL][ICS] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4) , will it remove the root access i had?
EDIT 2: I have just flashed the kernel via odin, and it finally got past the screen with the yellow triangle! However, it is now stuck on the second screen which shows the 'S' logo with the words 'Samsung Galaxy SII' under it. Any more ideas?

Can you boot to recovery? If so, you can try a factory reset/wipe data. You'll lose all your data, (not counting pictures/media) but at this point, do you have anything to lose?

Well, now I'd say you need to flash a full firmware. You said you downloaded I9100PXXLPH from here? Should work. But you'll no longer be rooted, and you won't have CWM recovery.
How did you get into this in the first place? You wanted CWM recovery?

I will be sure to try that, and basically earlier today i rooted it successfully, and then i had to get CWM onto it so i could start flashing new ROMs etc, and i tried installing CWM via that method that has now caused all of this
Never the less i will try your suggestion, so should i basically mount usb from CWM, then copy the firmware over to the phone, unmount, and then wipe, and then flash it finally?
EDIT: it wont allow me to mount USB in CWM
can i just flash the ZIP using odin in download mode, or does it have to be a .tar file?

No. That download is for a package that must be flashed while the phone is in download mode. That will require you to use a computer, and a flashing tool, such as Odin or Heimdall.

How would I go about flashing it in download mode, i really have no idea as I don't think you can flash zip files in odin, forgive me for all of the questions I really appreciate your help!
EDIT: I have unzipped the file and hooray lies in it the .tar.md5 file! I am in the middle of flashing this and will report back on results
Thanks a lot guys!!
THANKS GUYS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP, my SII is now working fully again! Cheers to all that helped, flashing the stock firmware worked with wipe/cache
Can't thank you enough!
Last thing if you don't mind, i want to root it again using this: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582)

Well I think Chainfire's CF-Root kernels (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) are not for i9100P, so not sure if he can achieve permanent CWM recovery. Anyway if he don't plan to flash every hour new ROM he should be fine with latest temporary CWM 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223 although will ask Phil about compatibility.

Can only flash with ODIN

Every ROM zip file I attempt to flash via CWM or TWRP doesnt work. I was on stock ICS (4.0.4) which I flashed using Odin. Every JB rom, stock or custom I attempt to flash with a recovery freezes either at boot up or first screen of initial setup. No errors are given on actual flash, it always looks good. . I wiped everything I can wipe, which is everything but emmc I think. What could be the problem? I have now flashed official JB through Odin twice with no issues.
Do you check that the ROM is downloaded properly by checking the md5 hash?

Ive flashed twrp 2.5 twice through odin and then tried to flash a rom with no improvement. Im really stumped 'cause flashing roms with odin works fine everytime, so it would seem nothings physically wrong with my device. Should I try a different recovery program? Using cwm and twrp give the same result, so Im skeptical a third recovery would be any different.
cheers

Only thing i can think of is look at the file format that youre trying to flash.
Is it zip? tar?
I may be wrong but cwm only works for .zip files from my experience. not .tar md5 etc.
why do you need to flash it via cwm? if its flashing through odin whats the problem?
It sounds like what ^^^^ is saying. Recovery flashes zip files and Odin flashes tar files. Don't confuse the zip files your pc uses to download the files with these.
When using odin I have to use ROM s which are .tar, so this basically limits me to stock ROMS. The custom ROMS are .zip which I can only flash with a custom recovery like twrp or cwm. I'd obviously like to flash the custom ROMS which are .zip , however it isn't working for me as I mentioned in the opening post . Not sure how to fix this problem .

Good idea. In a recovery zip file will be a couple of folders. One of them will have a tar file you can flash in the phone or pda a lot in Odin.
Thanks for the suggestion but I had no luck . I have tried extracting padawan JB and a debloated stock JB rom and they extract many files, folders, apks but no tar I could locate. Also I am not sure even if there was a tar i could use if it would be safe to use. If all this was good, it would still be a cumbersome workaround and wouldnt fix my problem of not being able to get a ROM installed via recovery to work.If I have no choice I'll use odin to flash custom ROMs (if there is a way) but Id rather get it to work with recovery.

If you're flashing between TW based to AOPS, or pretty much from a rom to a completely different rom, you will need to WIPE your data too, or better, do a complete wipe (factory reset). I had this issue when moving from Stock TW-based rom to Padawan JB rom. I did a factory reset (complete wipe) and it booted fine. But then again, I'm used to TW so I flashed that back.

I've wiped everything I can wipe between flashes (includes factory reset), many times trying both TWRP and CWM for flashing and wiping with no luck unfortunately. The wiping doesnt seem to help, different custom recoveries don't help, so I'm stumped as to what the problem could be.

Me too. Every rom freezes during the app optimization screen...usually at about 3/4th the way through. What's going on???
*edit* Tried to restore factory w/Odin. I'm bricked now. Time for some JTAG love.
Exactly the same issue here.
Every jelly bean ROM, 4.1 or 4.2, stock or custom, as long as I install them via recovery, it either doesn't boot up or gets stuck on the first screen.
If I use ODIN to install the stock ROM, it works fine.
Driving me nuts...
Just throwing suggestions out there but try sideloading the rom and see if itll install that way? Also are you odin flashing recovery? Maybe try to load twrp through goomanager and see if maybe recovery is corrupted?

I assume you are talking about this rom, as there are no special instructions in that thread, follow the guide to flash a rom (depending on what format the rom is in (zip, or md5), you can use CWM or Odin/Mobile Odin)
edit: sorry, just saw that it has an Aroma installer, hence CWM is the way to go.
thanks
Thanks for answering.
That is the Rom that I'm trying to flash.
I tried once with CWM, BUT! The flashing process went wrong. I just follow the steps in Aroma installer and when I click continue the flashing process begins and the phone reboots and the samsung logo appears, but nothing more happend.
I had to restore the firmware :s ...
Any help?

[Q] [HELP] How can i fix boot loop Problem after flashing a Custom Rom, I9300?

Hey Guys
I came from Stock Rom, rooted my device and flash recovery. And when i come to install any custom rom my device get into a boot loop.
Fortunately I got a back up and every time a try a different custom rom and i can go back to stock.
Well i have tried with the following roms
CM10
AOKP
Slim Roms
Paranoid
Everytime i have tried any of these roms i do carefully everty step. Just exactly like the tutorial says. I've been done this before, installing custom rom in other device, like nexus s, gs3, gs2. Im familiar with those stuffs.
And i don´t think it has to do with some corrupted file when i download the base.
I have tried to reflash recovery and nothing.
Tried to change kernel, i changed to siyah and nothing. After i install custom rom , the device just show the logo of the rom and ask select language and bam!, there is the boop loop
I don´t know what else to do.
I have read something about clear nand with odin , but i dont see those options.
If anyone knows what to do, please let me know.
Thnks

That suggests a problem that is one of the following .
EXT SD card faulty
Custom rom download faulty
CWM recovery faulty.
user not following instructions .
Try flashing a Samsung Based custom rom .

What do you mean boot loop is it actually restarting after boot and restating again ??
Yes. Exactly that's what i mean. It restart over and over again.

With this I understand that it will alow me to flash a custom rom after that, is that right?
Another question, how can i go back like all factory settings, i mean clear everything. I format internal sd, factory reset, do the wipes, fix permissions and once again try to install a custom rom but phone doesn't boot after show logo. Actually i install the same rom in another i9300 and everything's go fine, so the file is ok.

What isn't working? Did it flash successfully but not boot? Just do a factory reset. If it didn't flash completely, then you have to let us know what happened before it failed.

Ok, so typically when people say they flashed a rom, that means a custom version through a custom recovery. But you said earlier you tried to install through Odin. This is an important distinction. If you tried to flash a custom rom and it didn't work, then flashing the correct stock firmware through Odin will resolve. If you flashed through Odin and it gave you that warning, then you need to find the right one and re-try.
