Helium & Z3C - Backup and Restore Apps on Non-Rooted Phones - Xperia Z3 Compact Themes and Apps

Just wondering if anyone has attempted this and how well it worked? Given the root situation and requirement to unlock the bootloader (and lose picture quality) I was looking for an alternative to TB. Any luck with this? I just ask because it notes some Sony phones may have issues.

I have just tested it with a few apps, but everything works great. It also restores the App-Data.
You have the opinion to backup the whole app or just the data. If you just backup the data you have to download the app first from the Playstore.
Some apps are not allowed to backup, I dont know why.
I made the backups with my old Z1compact.

Thanks for confirming. I backed up my apps with my old phone but it doesnt detect on the z3 compact after copying to internal storage. I read a workaround is to first install and back up what I want to restore data for, then use it to restore. Hope that does it.

I'm currently backing up to Google Drive with Helium. Haven't tried restoring anything yet.

I wasn't able to set up helium, inspite of buying the app to use the google drive/cloud option, it still asks me to connect to the desktop, which I'm not able to (camera ptp mode is not working)
Any ideas on skipping it from asking to connect to desktop?

Well, you have to connect to desktop to make it work. The PTP didn't work on my Z3C either, it keeps reverting. Just keep at it and eventually it will work briefly enough to connect to Helium.

Have you tried to install the Sony PC Software (the latest version). After installing this + the latest drivers everything worked for me. Perfectly restored all apps except those which do not allow backup.

I had this problem.
In usb setting there is only MTp and direct transfer, no PTP mode.
I'll try again later. and see if I can google a solution

I would like to confirm that i used helium to back up and restore apps and their data. The only flow like mentioned earlier is that it doesn;t back up all apps for some reason..
Also, i backed up on the internal memory and restored it. I used windows 7. I am having an issue with windows 8 and helium desktop app.

Got it working as well, with the workaround above. It is rather buggy, but for certain apps where I wanted to keep my data I will have to make do. I do miss Titanium Backup, that is for sure.
Now the only issues I need to attempt to resolve, which I likely will not be able to without root, are:
- force Desktop User Agent in Chrome for all sites.
- enable writing to SD Card - all SD Card Fix apps require root
Other than that I can do without root so far.

Yes, i have installed the latest version of the PC companion(v2.1), However after connecting the Z3 compact, it shows the device as Sony Xperia smartphone instead of Z3 compact. I have a Xperia P and it shows the device as Xperia P. So, something is must be missing.

Yes, this method worked, but its more of a workaround. The whole point of buying the premium was to use the cloud feature and not to depend on the desktop. i tried to bypass the the screen where it asks for connecting to the desktop but it exits on pressing cancel. My Xperia P is rooted, so i don't have that startup screen where it asks me to connect to the desktop. Also Helium isn't able to backup many apps, it has it's flaws, but it works on a non-rooted device, which was very helpful.
Also, was anyone able to install the drivers from http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/xperia-z3-compact-driver/
I wasn't able to install them.

You only have to connect to the desktop that first time. After that you can use the cloud.

I used Helium to backup my rooted Galaxy Nexus.
At first I just backed up AppData, but was frustrated trying to find the apps in the Play market to match the app data. I restored it again with the app+data backed up.
I was using the unpaid version of Helium and Windows 8.1 and uploaded the archive to my computer via the Helium Server on my phone. Installed Helium on the z3c and restored apps/data mostly fine.
I had Waze FC on me and had to uninstall and re-install. Other apps that required login info needed to be re-signed into otherwise it mostly worked?

Just registered here to tell that I also failed to set the PTP mode on two different Windows 7 computers. Then I tried on my Macbook and it worked! No PTP mode was required.
If you can get your hands on a mac, try that.

[Q] building a custom rom

Hi I'm new to the development scene, I am trying to strip down a rom to remove certain programs... actually everything but the web browser, firefox 5 and flash. I would also like to set a default background in the image and preset the wireless settings too. These are going to be put in an environment where we don't want them to be messed with. Is there an easy way of doing this? I was thinking the ASOP rom might be the best candidate to work with, but I don't know for sure. I ill be rolling out about 20 - 25 units in the next week or so. any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joe
Your best bet is really probably to use the latest stock ROM so you don't leave root access and google market in there. You could probably acomplish your roll out by setting up any rom the way you want it, then wiping cache and user data, and running a nand backup with CWM. Then use that backup to restore onto the other devices.
To remove system apps in a ROM you can use ADB from a PC, or you can root it with z4root and use Titanium Backup. Then remove root before the backup.
thanks for the info
Thanks a bunch! I will try that when they come in. If I clear out the user data will that wipe out the wifi settings? To remove programs via ADB I still would need to be rooted correct?
Thanks
Joe
Yes clearing data will wipe wifi settings. I have never tried ADB on an unrooted device. You should jsut be able to activate debug usb and have it work jsut fine. But you can root with z4root and then UNroot with z4root when you are done with doing your root things (but befor eyou make a nand image).
Just search for z4root.apk

I'm having trouble removing the facebook app, youtube app and the gmarket app. any tips? I cant find them in the titanium backup app. any tips on removing these? getting rid of these apps is of the up-most importance. - these will be installed in an environment where we do not want people to have access to these apps. an help would be appreciated.

They are installed as system apps. You would need to use something like SystemApp Remover to remove them (it can also backup the system aps incase you want to reinstall and also convert nonsystem apps to system apps). But, you do realize that there are other places for users to get apps to install than Market and you can still reach Facebook & Youtube via the browser once the google apps are removed!!!!
Hmm
I tried the system app remover they do not seem to be listed there It looks like they are short cuts to web pages, at this point I would settle just for hiding them, do you know if it possible to hide those. I am using the factory build on the 1.2 tree.
Thanks
Joe
Use the instructions posted here on the CyanogenMod Wiki to get rid of whatever you want.
And, there's really no need to use things like z4root on the gTablet. You can get root without that. In fact, if you can connect to the tablet using adb, then you're already root. The gTab is not like a locked-down phone.

I do believe you are correct...the stock TapNTap had the ability to save Web Links as Icons on the home screen. Not running stock and don't remember if there is a way to remove them.
z4root is handy to gain root and install busybox/superuser without having to set up adb though.

WhatsApp for Sony Tablet?

[EDIT]
Finally able to install WhatsApp on Sony Tablet S:
Steps are as follows:
1. Take backup of WhatsApp on ur phone using Titanium Backup.
2. Copy it on ur Sony tablet.
3. Restore app+data using Titanium Backup.
4. Register no. and use. (m not able to use the same mobile no.)
Anyone got whatsapp working on Sony Tablet S? I have heard some old version might work..

EDIT:
I installed some older version, but when I am opening & clicking on ACCEPT tab,
its showing alert "A cellular data network is required to activate WhatsApp Messenger"..
did any1 else tried or trying !!???!!
i didn't try but doubt that it will work due to the lack of mobile phone number which whatsapp needs to run.

If you are able to copy the app configuration from /data/data/whatsapp from your phone to your tablet it should be working. I am waiting of my Sony tablet and will try it by myself ... but theoretically it should work if we have the rights to copy files to this folder.
from where to copy?
whatsapp folder is created at /sdcard/.. level in phone!!

as I wrote before ... /data/data/com.whatsapp
on /sdcard you will find only transfered media files ...
the app is installed on /data/app and the conf. data on /data/data/
this is valid for all non-system apps ...
try a file manager like "root explorer" or "file expert" but I don't if it will work without root access rights ... please try and report ...
-- Edit --
please take a look at this post ... that could be the solution for us ..

I remember .. but root is not a "must have" for Titanium Backup. I still waiting for my Sony tablet (will receive it tomorrow) but from my understanding the normal /data/app and /data/data folder are r/w enabled and you need no root to put something into ... otherwise every app would need root access to install ... could you try it with Titanium backup as described in the linked post please and report ? Thanks in advance.

Let me knoe if u could do. I have installed VIBER.

I grabbed WhatsApp from my SonyEricsson Xperia Arc S (swedish) with TitaniumBackup Pro and copied it over to my Sony Tablet S.
TitaniumBackup Pro does not work well on this tablet. I did not get the three menu-buttons you have on top on smartphones. So I could not choose backup/restore.
So I decided to try another route. I took the backuped files from Titanium in my smartphone and moved them to my tablet (the apk-file) and installed it with astero. It went well. I started up the app, and it said it didn't recognized my device. So I copied the data-files from /data/data to the tablet. It did not help.
So I did not managed to get WhatsApp to work on my tablet. Other than get to the startup where I have to press "approve" then it told me it's a no go.
I even tried to reboot the device, but it didn't help.
Hope this might answer some of your questions.

I am hold up top the Internet using a mobile WiFi hot spot device. It has a data SIM card inside and has a number attached to it. Can I use this to to link to Viber? How about normal home WiFi?
Is Viber available on the market? Can't seem to be able to find it.

[Q] Xperia Neo V Recovery

Hey guys,
I am new here and wanna learn. I have ICS 4.0.3 build .562 rooted.
I am experiencing few problems, i would be happy if somebody can help:
1. I cannot get into recovery mode of my phone. I tried Rom Manager too but failed. I want to have a Nandriod backup but can't.
2. I get a message "error processing purchase" on google play store while downloading a free app.
3. I cannot copy files when my computer is connected to PC. I can see a drive in My Computer and see all the files, but i cannot copy them. Copying a folder helps but the copied folder is always empty.
I am stuck up guys.. Please Help
Welcome to XDA
Seems like a messed up OS !
I am not sure, what's the cause of those problem, but is your phone working fine with normal usage ? ie Call, SMS, Browsing wifi etc ?
try Repairing your phone with SUES and check things without Rooting 1st !
1 have you installed cwm? There are many versions floating around, some you tap the screen others use volume down, install one and try. You can then set rom manager to use the installed one.
2 have you set up a payment method on play, not all networks support adding to your phonebill, you many need to add card details.
3 switch to msc mode in settings, mtp support is flaky on some OS

thanks but still stuck...
1. i just wanna use the built-in recovery. For that what i should do?
2. i will try to setup the card on it.
3. where is MSC mode in settings.. please elaborate.. i appreciate

yes rest phone is working great. I once repaired it but it just got worse so restored back.

1. No Build-in recovery
2. For MTP mode, go to Setting>Xperia>Connectivity>chose MTP
1) You can install one (there is information in the forum already). If you don't want to bother and you have unlocked bootloader, you can get `recoveryNeo.img` and use `fastboot boot recoveryNeo.img` to boot recovery the current session.
No built-in recovery on Neo V though.
Doing some cleaning and moving this to Q&A. OP glad you are wanting to learn and best of luck to you.
just in case you still need
I, too have experienced this that i cannot reboot to recovery after flashing a new fw and installed cwm so heres what i did:
1. Do a factory reset (found in settings).
2. Install CWM.
Try if this method/procedure works for you!

Android phones don't have a recovery mode by default. We have to install one. One of the most popular on is ClockWorkMod recovery. Once you have rooted your phone, its pretty simple to install. I can elaborate on the procedure if anyone is looking for the solution still.

[Q] Root explorer for PC ? (without root need)

Hi guys,
my friend has HTC Explorer. The phone is unrooted, running original ROM. About one week ago display (touchscreen) had suddenly stopped working. The phone is still under warranty, so I don't want to repair the touchscreen, but in phone there are many data, which shouldn't be lost(like contacts, SMS etc.). Because she isn't very "technical-talented", she didn't have created any backup of them... She can go to service with the phone, but they will probably replace the phone with another one, I think, so data will be lost... The only way is program for PC like Android Commander or something like it, I think, but without root need.
So, guys, is there any possibility to save the data?
Thanks for your answers

Yes, there are several apps to control your phone from your web browser (you'll need to install the apk file using ADB, but that's easy).
OK, but it's not possible to install apps using ADB with debugging off, is it?

xiaomi redmi note 4 not allowed to use Lloyds Banking app

Ok, so iv recently purchased a xiaomi redmi note 4 and im pretty happy with it so far, however it wont allow me to use my Lloyds Bank internet banking app, keeps telling me that im rooted, which i can only assume i am, presumably when i bought the phone from geekbest, they had to root the device before they could sideload the Google play etc, my question is, is there a decent way of either hiding the fact im rooted from this app? Iv tried a couple of apps from the play store but they dont appear to work, still get the same message from the banking app. Failing that, how easy would it be to 'unroot' the device and would this have any repercussions on the current functionality of my new phone?
Cheers

There is an excellent backup system within MIUI so I'd recommend using that before any install.
If you go through those instructions, nothing much should change. The Play Store is included within the firmware so that's no issue. I'm not sure what the latest stable version is but I'm sure that link goes through to the most up to date version?

I'm not sure what instructions you're following but that doesn't sound familiar at all. There is no involvement with a PC or Mi Suite required.
Most of the instructions are here in this image: https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4024465&d=1485893799
Ignore the bit about downloading to the PC, download it directly using your phone.

From what I remember, it doesn't go into the root folder, it goes in 'downloaded_rom' or something along those lines.
You may need to install the developer ROM then go back to stable for it to work correctly but I'm pretty sure as long as you get the firmware in the correct folder it should work.

Well the instructions on the link state:
"Step 1: Put the downloaded ROM into internal storage (not inside any folder)." - hence why i put it on the root.
However iv tried choosing both the ROM inside my 'Downloads' folder as well as the one on the root of the phone, still get the same message!?
