Phone Rebooting Randomly After Update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

This is my first time posting for help so if I left something out please tell me and I will provide anything needed.
Problem :
My phone keeps randomly rebooting since I did a OTA update this morning. I have a Verizon S4 and the baseband 1545VRUFNG6. The reboot happens pretty much anytime I use the phone.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

I'm having the same problem. Hope there is a fix, this sucks.

Also having this problem. Going from NC5 to NG6 seems to have caused unexpected rebooting issues. Was your phone rooted by chance? My phone was rooted via Towelroot and had safestrap installed as the recovery bootloader. Now neither work.
Just trying to see if maybe there's some further similarities in the environments that cause the rebooting, more than just jfltevzw Galaxy S4.
Looking forward to finding a fix.

I was rooted as well. I used towelroot I believe as well. Root is gone as well.

Has anyone tried a factory reset? Did it fix the problem?

I'm planning on doing a factory reset today to see if it doesn't fix it. Unfortunately, due to the randomness of the reboots, I may not necessarily know right away whether the issue is fixed. But if I can save a few others from having to factory reset, hooray

Please keep us posted if it works. I hate doing resets, especially for nothing, but if it works, then it is well worth it.

Alright, I've just finished the factory reset and reinstalled my apps from before. I have noticed that some of the other small bugs I was experiencing after the OTA update appear to be gone, however as the random reboots don't necessarily happen that often, I'll update again at the end of the day and consider it a success if the phone doesn't reboot at all during the rest of today. That leaves about 10 hours to see if there are any reboots.
Will keep you guys posted

I too am facing this issue. Phone was fine prior to this update.

Did you also root your phone using towelroot? Everyone else in the thread so far had rooted their phone before the update, so this information will help others in the future determine if this thread is relevant to them or not

I had rooted it once before , but then had returned to stock. OTA received after going back to Stock.

I have the same issue. Never rooted the phone. I have not try master reset yet. Called verizon and was offered a replacement phone. They also told me that many people complain about this issue and the fix should be available in December. I am not sure how the replacement phone would solve the issue unless it has NC5 version.

Here is the cure!!!
To fix the problem... Turn phone off.....turn the phone on while holding the home, volume up, and the power button.... Release the power button once the phone vibrates, but continue holding the volume up and home until you reach the boot loader screen..... Use the volume rocker the highlight the wipe cache partition.....select it by using the power button......once it is finished highlight reboot system now.

Thanks a lot for the hint. Hopefully it works. I just did cache wipe, will comment on performance.

I just cleared the Cache partition. I will report back tomorrow after a night of using it.

No such luck...
As stated in my post above, I cleared my Cache partition. However this did not fix the random reboot problem for me. I've found that it reboots sometimes when I listen to Pandora, but this is not the only time it reboots. It also tends to reboot during a call or right after as well. Is there some sort of error log that I can post from my phone to help better define what is going on?

It's been almost 24 hours since my factory reset and the phone hasn't rebooted at all. Of course, this could have potentially be solved by simply wiping the /cache partition instead of both data and cache. It's hard to say now that I've already done the factory reset.

Just got a refurbished phone yesterday with NC5 loaded on it. Made the mistake of taking the NG6 update. Phone started random reboots after the update. This was on a perfectly stock phone, never rooted. Think the problem must be with the NG6 update. I just rooted the NG6 and still getting random reboots. I'm going to try wiping cache and see if that works.

[Q]Wifi issue still present factory reset fixed.

So, before I start this, Yes I was a noob. I didnt make a nandroid backup from when I first rooted my phone and everything worked 100%. I didnt read, and I guess its now biting me in the ass.
The past few months Ive been having issues with Wifi, it continuously says "Unable to scan for networks". I did a factory reset about a week and a half ago and for the first time my wifi was able to connect, however it was dropping out every couple minutes. Wouldnt even stay connected to install any market updates.
I figured that it was something with my dying router(Which Ive since replaced) so I flashed in BAMF to see if I could keep my wifi connection with another rom. Ive been using VirusROM(Love it even though its out od date). I wiped and flashed in BAMF, and restarted. When I restarted, I had no wifi again. Since then, Ive been trying out different ROMS and kernels in hopes that I would find something that would fix it. Nothing did.
After this I figured that I would just do another factory reset and go from there, however with all of the times Ive done the factory resets it never actually gets reset. Does it wipe my info? Yes, but it boots back up with all of the portions of whatever ROM I had installed last. Not reset. So now Ive ended up with two problems.
1. I still have no wifi
2. I cant factory reset so that I can figure out what is going on with my wifi.
Ive wiped Cache/Batt Stats/Davlick and done a factory reset literally six times in a row to hopefully clean EVERYTHING OUT to no avail. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I hope Im just missing something small because Im still new to android.
Edit: I DO NOT use kernel manager and I dont use ROM manager to flash it in, I flash everything in through recovery.

I'm sure there's an RUU out there that will take your phone back to stock but I honestly doubt that's the issue here. What radio version are you using? Have you tried flashing different radios to see if that would fix it. You can find a list here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045081. Also what ROM are you currently on?
When you install a ROM, it modifies the /system directory which is responsible for everything, how the rom looks, included apps, drivers etc.
When you do a factory reset, I'm guessing through recovery, it is only clearing the /data and /cache partitions.
You will have to flash a stock RUU to get it to truly go back to the day you got it.
Here are instructions on how to return to stock:

The ROM Ive been on hasnt mattered. Ive jumped through BAMF, the new Cubed Rom, the Deodexed stock debloat and Virus' Airborne(which is my daily driver). Ive done the different radios. I was on the v2 leaked for a while, then I switched to the new 3g and old 4g to see if its worked but it hasnt. I may have to try out the original one and see if that works, but I havent had wifi since before I flashed in the leaked radio when it came out.

Gotcha. Trying this now. I will make sure to make a nandroid this time if it works. lol.
@isdnmatt: Thanks, that got rid of my recovery problem
Still having wifi issue though. 100% out of the box stock and I get the "Unable to scan for networks
**** me, I should have read that before I did it. Now I have to reroot. Goddamnit.
Have had the same problem with WiFi before and after ADB root. It will sometimes forget both my home and work networks. I've found the problem usually occurs when I'm connected then move put of range. A reboot fixes the problem sometimes. Other times I have to re-enter my settings. I'm still on the stock Rom, nothing custom.

Thats a separate issue than what Im having. Im not having issues with it forgetting my networks. I cant scan for networks.
I am thinking of downgrading the radio.
EDIT: after LOTS of research here, I upgraded to MR2 and Gingervitis. All of my WiFi issues are gone.

Radio locks up and then phone reboots.

So here is the deal. At any time and any place my phone will seem to be perfectly fine. I can cruze the internet on 4G and WIFI but not 3G. I cannot make or receive calls and txt and MMS. Sometimes the phone will continue like that till I reboot it and sometimes it will reboot on it's own.
This is not a constant but more or less once a day sometimes twice and sometimes I can go 2 or three days without the issue.
official OTA MR is installed. A co-worker has the same phone and nothing, not one issue with his, but he is not rooted. So I am beginning to wonder if rooting the phone is the cause. I even thought virus once and downloaded AVG and Lookout and neither report an issue.
It is odd, not super annoying as it has never occured during a call or while I'm using the phone, it is only when I am not using it at all, which is hardly ever considering how bad arse it is.
So has anyone else seen this. It is not a full lockup of the phone just the 3G/Voice radio.
Did you have the same issues before you rooted? If so, unroot and return to the store. If not, remove as many apps as you can and slowly add apps until it starts again. This phone is sensitive to some apps that weren't designed for it.

So I went and did a factory reset on it. And within 12 hours the issue occured. So I went to root the phone and found out that root was still there!! So when did a factory reset not clear the phone? So I did it again and still root and all the files I put into the system(ie.. webtop over HDMI, root, and talk2 with video) are all still there. But all my txt phone and other items are gone as well as everything on the SDcard(media space). So what gives?

You'll need to flash the last MR5 in this thread. You'd think something called "factory reset" would do this.

I did the dock root the day it came out. Funny thing about that too is that the files for that remain in the /var/tmp/pulse directory and I can see it and see them in ES explorer but not in terminal emulator.
After I did the factory restore I installed super user and it was good to go. I never had to perform the steps to root and all apps that require root are working perfectly fine.

[Q] The mysterious wifi issue

I've been ripping my hair out the last couple days trying to figure this out.
In the process of flashing a ROM and kernel I did a number of things:
-Carrier unlock (I feel like this is the culprit)
-Unlocked the bootloader
-Flashed Wet Dream (2.3.6 build)
-Installed webtop
-Attempted to root, unsuccessfully (let me know when the 2.3.6 root is available, haha)
After all this, everything was working fine--including wifi. But somewhere along the lines, maybe 15 minutes after I complete all these steps, out of the blue my wifi won't connect. It just says "obtaining IP address" and never connects.
So I got pissed and went on a wiping/reflashing spree. Got everything reset. The wifi was working great again. Then randomly, it just stopped working again.
Question:
Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?!
I'm dying here. Just as a side note in case you need this information, I think I'm going to flash to the 2.3.4 Wet Dream so I can root my device. Also, I don't mind going back to stock. If that's what fixes, it then I'll be more than happy to go stock. I plan on running webtop2sd as well.
Thanks in advance.

My understanding was that WD was already rooted, but Busybox wasn't installing so I ran Root Check Basic from the Market and it said my device did not have root access

nvm.. maybe do full wipe again..
what ver of WD u using? with what addon? im using WD 1.4.3 full
I've already done a cache/date wipes to no avail.
I'm using 1.4.4 lite. I'm thinking of flashing the 2.3.4 based WD though (is that 1.4.3?).
I could flash something else too, I guess. I really need webtop (with xfce mod) and I heard Wet Dream works well with it.
If this really is a software problem and it is the ROM's fault, then does anyone have a webtop compatible ROM recommendation?

i cant tell if its problem with rom or what.. 1.4.3 is 2.3.6 base. and yes webtop work well with it.
here's normaly what i do..
Boot CWM Recovery
Wipe data/factory
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
flash rom
reboot to fastboot and do fastboot-w & then fastboot reboot.
let it boot for 1st time (until stable/full load) i left it around 10 mins
then reboot back to CMW to flash addon. usually i flash 1 then boot.. continues untill flash all.. maybe a bit fussy step.. but i prefer all loaded before flashing another
*i never tried webtop2sd yet.. still dont buy bigger mem card coz funding for lapdock
** maybe can try this one to make it clean wipe.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421522&highlight=fastboot+-w
Yeah I realized too late that everything cost me way more than I had originally intended to spend. SD cards have come down in price but still pretty pricey for a 32 GB card.
And thank you for the link. I'll try it out tomorrow and report back. It's 1:00 AM here in Seattle!
Hey Mankey,
Have you tested different Wifi networks to ensure that the issue is not with the phone or the ROM at all?
Also, check if someone else on Wet Dream thread had WiFi issues, if this happened with someone else, then they should have fix for sure!
Usually I do what bejnat mentioned and usually works.
Also, about the root, try to follow a root process again. It happened with me before, then I had to install a .zip file through Recovery mode to have root access again.
Hope this helps!
wouldn't just flashing the radio or a newer radio maybe fix his issue??
Yeah it doesn't work with other networks either. And as for root I don't think there's a direct way to root 2.3.6 yet.
Sk8trix, I think I'll try that after I flash back to stock 2.3.4. I've tried just about everything but the radio. Kernels don't fix it.
I'll post an update in a couple days. I really want to get this fixed.
I had the same problem with my dark side when I 1st got it and to fix it I flashed another ROM ,loaded it then flashed back ,cleaned delvik cache and flashed gapps then rebooted and 1st boot fixed my problem was using 2.3.6 with webtop2sd+nebtop app hope this helps you

[Q] Screen Flickering after software update.

My device is a local re-branded and enhanced Xolo a500s/it's like a karbon a5 a think. After successfully updated my device via OTA and after my device rebooted. My screen started to flicker randomly. My phone is not rooted and im still using the official stock rom. I found a temporarily solution by doing a Factory Reset, the flickering would be gone but it will come back after my phone screen goes off and on. Anyway to fix this?
I suspect that the new lockscreen bloatware system app that comes with the update causes this, but hey I only suspect it and i'm new to the android community. I can't disable it(googled already, and the only way to freeze/remove it is to root.) I can't root my device for something like a hunch. I'm waiting for a software update that would fix my device's touchscreen collide bug.
Appreciate all of your thoughts.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. I was able to disable the bloatware new systapp lock the came with it and it didn't solve the problem. I will try your method. Again thank you very much. I will check in later to post the result, hopefully this fixes it all

I successfully managed to boot in safe mode, the flickering has stopped but it return right after the screen goes back from sleep. Then I do a factory reset then after that the phone starts up and the result is still the same.
I will try the recovery mode though.

okay, i've managed to enter recovery menu. the one where you use the volume buttons to move. Is it really safe to select Wipe Data/Factory Reset there? Is that what you're prompting me to do in your post?

The results are still the same... your method do work yes. The flickering is gone after rebooting but as soon as you know press the power button and screen goes off then press the power button again and the screen turns on again from standby, the flickering returns.
Before doing some OTA updates my device is like v7 or v8 and now it's v9.1
and I didn't have any screen flickering problems before updating to v9.1 so I can safely assure that it's not in the hardware. It really just happened right after updating my device.
Another question, will installing a custom rom fix this software bug? But I really don't want to install those yet at the moment.
Any, Thank you very much. I really really really really appreciate it all man. I'm really at loss now. This is my first android phone that's why.

So the only is custom rom/original stock rom before update(which is impossible because I haven't backed up one before updating)
is the only solution eh.
The reason that I held back from installing a custom rom is because I'm waiting for the touchscreen bug fix for my device iva OTA. Will I still able to get it after installing a custom rom?
Again many thanks. Is there a way to give you a thanks on every posts?

So the only is custom rom/original stock rom before update(which is impossible because I haven't backed up one before updating)
is the only solution eh.

If there is a way to restore back to your stock version or find a way to get back to stock version then yes .
If you had a Sony Device then you could restore it with SEUS.Now with a Xolo I really dont know.Ask to the specific device forum

Thanks a lot man. I've flashed a stock rom and my device got fixed from screen flickering. Really looks like a firmware bug. So I've just downgraded.
Again thanks a million

Nexus 9 freezing constantly after Nougat update

Hey, guys. Searched around this forum for this topic but didn't see anything, apologize if it's a duplicate.
Basically my tablet has been freezing constantly since the nougat update. It wasn't happening all that often to begin with but over time it turned into something like once a day to a few times a day. It doesn't follow any usage patterns as far as I can tell (i.e. I use chrome mostly but if I'm on something like one of the regular google apps it might still happen). Once it freezes I have to force shutdown via power button. Every now and then it will freeze and restart itself without my having to force shutdown.
It's stock ROM, with virtually stock apps (dropbox is the only downloaded app). I read about some solutions which I've already tried, and so I wiped the cache, did a factory reset, have about 5gb free storage space, and the issues are still the same.
Any suggestions? Thanks

YAY!!! someone else!
Can you try something for me. Flash this kernel FIRE-ICE N K10.5.3 (K10.5.4 seems to be having problems ATM)
i think your problem will be fixed.... please let me know! :highfive:
Hi, thanks for replying. I absolutely can do that but I literally have no experience flashing kernels. I assume it's same as flashing a rom but If you could provide some instructions for me I'd appreciate that. It's been a long time since I've even done that and I'd want to make sure I don't screw anything up.

Yes TWRP
Question did you unlock your bootloader?
honestly i don't remember. some time ago my n9 got stuck in some weird bootloop. i had to run the RUU (i think that's what it was) to restore everything back to completely normal. so if me having to do that meant i unlocked the bootloader then yes i did. if not, then i wouldn't have done it.
