[Q] How good ports can exynos chipset get? - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

How good ports can exynos chipset get?
I got alpha as my work phone, not gonna root or anything for awhile but I'm just wondering what can we expect from exynos chipset device romwise?
Last comment about exynos phones that I have heard is that they will never get good support and rely highly on hacks. Also cyanogenmod doesn't officially support any exynos devices?

we will see next months

Seems that there's some progress but like for all exynos chipsets it requires a lot of work. But at least some devs like bigger challenges compared to qualcomm chipset. :fingers-crossed:

SGS3 Coming 1st part of 2012 with its own launch event what ya gonna do?

So us AT&T guys and gals what will you do with your beloved SGS2 when the SGS3 arrives? I mean we are hearing 12 Mpx camera and quad core with possible 4.5 inch screen
well well, MWC is the announcement like I stated earlier.
http://www.bgr.com/2011/12/28/quad-core-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-to-be-unveiled-at-mwc-2012/
When is the SGS3 being released? My guess is not for quite a while since the GS2 is so popular with all the carriers. For me it doesn't matter as this phone is more than fast enough. And I judge fast by experiencing no lag when opening apps.
A multi core processor, like those in a desktop, really only make a difference in apps that can utilize all cores. I may be wrong but I'm guessing it might be a bit before most apps will.
Besides the SGS2 screen is about as big as I would go on a phone display. 4.5" is getting closer to a small tablet. Also for me, I rarely use the phone's camera for pictures that matter so it doesn't matter much for me.
Sorry, that was one downer of a post. I must still be bitter after my Broncos loss yesterday.

From an xda/dev community perspective i don't think it'll be affected to much. Look at the GSII predecessor, I9000/captivate. Those forums are still going strong with plenty of devs. The captivate already has Ics running pretty smoothly with CM9 alpha! By the time the GSIII comes out, our phones will have some amazing roms with little to no issues(we already have a few).

I had an iPhone 3g from January 2008 until September 2011. Now I have this phone. Going back to my 3g gave me a very slow experience.
If I can use another phone, and come back to the SGSII and if feels slow, then I'll upgrade.
In other words, ill be here awhile B)
looks like SGS3 is coming Q1 of 2012

Assuming my SGS2 is still running fine I won't do anything when the next one comes out. If it ain't broke don't fix it . I was on an iPhone 3g before this, main reason I upgraded was because my iPhone was so laggy I could barely use it. (well that and I was sick of iOS)

Every year in February the Galaxy S is released and usually US version arrives in August /Sept
The SGSIII will be so revolutionary and desirable that upon its release it will immediately render all its predecessors inoperable.
I hate these speculative threads.

No way are they gonna release sgs3 q1 2012. I read somewhere, can't remember where, that the a15 processor they are releasing with the sgs3 won't even be ready till q3 2012, which means it'll probably be around the end of summer 2012.
From what i can make out of the screen shot it says it has 2gb RAM, 12 mp camera, 2 ghz exynos 5250, and a 4.6 in HD Super AMOLED + display... I may marry this damn phone.
heres a lil teaser... lol http://www.techradar.com/images/zoom/samsung-galaxy-s3-1033039/index1 and heres a piece on the Exynos that'll be in the gs3... http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...-to-be-powered-by-2ghz-dual-core-chip-1044595 WAIT!! HOLD THE PHONES!!! QUAD CORE BABY!!! (which would make sense considering HTC already announced a wuad core device) http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...alaxy-s3-to-be-quad-core-mind-blower--1042710
Sales of the GS2 are doing to well to warrant a release of a new model in February especially with the recent release of the skyrocket. The only speculation I've seen from any site is second half of next year. I doubt it will have quad core as well as they have much faster dual core up their sleeves. i think quad core is going to be overkill until they can milk the dual core architecture

htc is releasing a phone jaunary/february 2012, the HTC Ville, which will be quad core, theres no way samsung is gonna allow their flagship to go out spec'd, a dual core qualcomm to an exynos is one thing, BUT, if samsung does go dual core, i dont care how fast their dual core exynos is, it wont be faster then a quad core processor. Period. and they already have the exynos 4412 which is quad core. heres an article on it, unlike a lot of xda members, I research and dont just talk out of my opinionated ass. http://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-rumored-to-use-quad-core-exynos-4412-34170/

A few mistakes i think. Correct me if im wrong
1. The HTC Edge is the phone think youre refering to as the ville is reported to be a dual core. I have not seen anything suggesting that the Edge will come out sooner than End Q1/ Early Q2 which is why i jumped on the GS2
2. I thought the GS2 was initially released in April not February.
3. Im not familiar with android and its apps coding but ive have indeed done searching to see if it could actually take advantage of quad core. I found little info but what i did find suggested it that it currently doesnt really stress dual core phone enough to suggest much of an improvement jumping to quad core. Developers could probably shed light on this and i would love their feed back. Ive been meaning to make a thread on this.
4. You are right a quad core will beat a dual core but only in an enviornment that would take advantage of 4 threads. If these android device are not going to really use the 2 extra threads then mhz and cache are going tdo be the things to improve on. I dont want quad corw if its going drain the **** out of my battery for minimal peformance gains.
Samsung is claiming that thier 2ghz 5250 is twice as fast as their 1.5ghz dual A9 core offerings which sounds like more power than these phone are going to use. Unless these higher res screen are ggoing to make that big of an impact and thats really gpu side performance .
OP, you left out 2 crucial details- for one, how much will it run us/will ATT get in AND will they butcher it (like Skyrocket came to be) or not? I honestly feel we struck insane luck w/ GS2 being left mostly untouched and I don't forsee this happening again anytime soon.
well from what i have been told all Galaxy S phones will be left almost untouched from SGS2 forward. The agreement seems to be as long as its galaxy S it stays almost untouched. The captivate previous and skyrocket are variants not SGS therefore the mostly at&t differentiation. The SGS3 will follow like the SGS2, ps the Galaxy Nexus is coming to AT&T in February http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/google/android/galaxy-nexus-coming-to-att-in-february/
Well hopefully they will figure out to get Exynos to work with the LTE chipsets.
im thinking that will be a definite, a matter of short time really

When will we see Exynos 5? Which device will get it?

Hey, just wondering when Samsung will officially release their Exynos 5 to the public and which device do you guy's think will receive it?
Please, no talk of Apple and A-15 etc!!
I think the new Nexus may get the Exynos 5, it's Google's flagship and they are going to want to make a bold statement. I am surprised Note 2 or either of the new tabs released recently didn't get it. Is it ready for public release?

Anyone's guess is as good as yours. I'm guessing either the new Nexus, or Galaxy S4.
It seems just guess work at the moment
It was announced in early August, I am guessing that was just too soon for the Note 2!
Sad as it sounds I am rather excited about the specs of this chipset from Samsung, if it appears in the Nexus then I will most certainly be getting one

November would be my guess. I'm also guessing we'll be seeing more than one Nexus this time.
I doubt that Nexus phone will ever get the exynos chip because it's documentation is semi closed source comparing to TI or Qualqomes one which doesn't meet the main purpose of nexus product - be the base for developers. I'm sure they will use omap 4470 dual in next nexus which performance is pretty same as exynos in S3. Speaking about Exynos 5 it's obvious for me that it will appear in galaxy S4 and Note 3 and tablets than and have a little better performance then A6 chip(Imo).

I guess this is a possibility, Samsung will want to make the S4 as best it can, I still think it could appear before then (guessing around May next year for S4) maybe the rumoured larger Nexus....

Not sure it is a mid range phone, I would call a Nokia Lumia 800 a mid range phone and the last Nexus is still better than that
I think with the rumour that multiple Nexus devices might appear means there will be some competition, meaning a better and higher spec device for users offering the pure google experience, which ultimately is what I would like (without rooting and flashing custom rom).
At the end of the day I am just a Technology wh0re, I don't care so much for specs and power more for the technology as a whole :good:

The next nexus will not have an exynos 5, as stated already it'll more than likely be omap.
Its more open source friendly than exynos.

Spotted Samsung's prototype with A-15 CPU (dual core): http://www.sammobile.com/2012/09/19...-powered-by-cortex-a15-cpu-and-mali-t604-gpu/
My bet is this is next Nexus, because its too soon to test SGS4 yet and also it will get quad core CPU IMO (it would be bad marketing if SGS4 get dual core while SGS3 had quad core one year before, most people doesn't know what is A9, A15 etc).
any as long as is not s4
is impossible to let samsung use exynos 5 dual on s4
since now already got quad core cortex a15 (snapdragon s4 pro)

Looking at the odd screen resolution it seems to be having onscreen buttons.. But am sure like you said it's not going to be s4. I would be happy if it's a nexus because samsung might make Exynos more open if nexus is powered by exynos

Is the Snapdragon 801 still worth it?

Hello,
As XDA is the place where there's people who's more well-informed about phones.. I thought I'll come here to ask:
"How long do you guys think before a 32bit powered phone gets outdated?"
Or is 64bit the choice to go for "futureproof"?
I'm expecting the phone to last me at least 2-3yrs.. And I'm in doubt if the Snapdragon 801 is still a solid choice for that long..
The OnePlus X is inevitably one of the best and most enticing smartphones out there, but I'm just worried whether the phone could last me a good 2-3years with that CPU.
What do you think?
Thanks.
You might be need to checkout some SD 650 Soc devices, heard it's on par with SD 808 Soc's performance

Think of it this way- Snapdragon 801 was the flagship chipset of 2014 and till today, it runs as smooth as it did in 2014.
Support for 32bit processors will be stopped only when probably 80% or more of all active Android devices are running 64bit processors. This isn't going to happen very soon since 64bit Android phones started rolling out less than a year ago.
iPhone 5S was the first 64bit phone that released in 2013. It's been 3 years now and Apple's 32bit devices have still got support. Neither have they missed out on any extra features only due to their processor being 32bit.
There was once a time when you needed to upgrade your phone in order to meet the requirements for running the latest Android version smoothly though this isn't the case anymore.
The only problem you may face with the 801 is when gaming. The Adreno 330 GPU can run most, but not all heavy games on max settings without lag and in the future you may require to play games on low settings, if at all they are still playable.
As for normal usage, I'm pretty sure it'll last you a good 2-3 years with full support and without any lags.
I was having the same doubt before buying my OPX. I thought about it, and now I'm glad that I bought it. It's an amazing phone!
Hope this helps

If you're saying based on the Redmi Note 3 event, I don't think it's true. They claim that the 650 beats even the 810 in the Nexus 6P and the OP2!
The people at Qualcomm aren't stupid. Surely they wouldn't launch a mid range chipset that's better than their flagship?
After all, benchmarks aren't everything
EDIT : According to AnandTech, the SD 618 has been renamed to 650.
@ashwinpilgaonkar Wow, wonderful post! Thanks! Confidence in the Snapdragon 801 is assured now.. Again thanks so much!

Are Exynos devices worth it for custom ROMs?

Hello I wanted to buy a Snapdragon device (OP6) also because I've always had good results for ROM development with this kind of chipsets. I remember that years ago if you bought a Samsung device with a Exynos CPU you were doomed to awful ROMs. I'm talking about AOSP based ROMs of course.
Samsung just release the A50 which I like even more than the OP6 and costs a lot less!
I was wonder if the things are the still the same with the Exynos or nowdays they're basically equal and I can expect good AOSP ROMs for the Samsung as well.
Thanks.

Question Does anyone know whether this device will become popular in the custom community?

I've been wondering whether to buy this device or not. I want to ask an experienced person. Will this device become popular in the custom community? I am looking forward to it being able to have countless custom ROMs like Redmi Note 7 series poco F1
I hope so.
I'm waiting to see which device to get. I like Xiaomi devices I hate the software.
None of the other manufacturers/ODM have the combo this has.
Good processor
rear or side fingerprint (optical is just useless)
Bootlocker unlock
Xiaomi.eu ( love hate with that. At least it's a custom rom -ish)
I wish there was a pop up camera.
Even I am waiting for it to become popular, OnePlus phones just aren't worth it anymore. I hope this gets popular soon, as soon as there is a working twrp available, I will go ahead and buy this phone.
The problem with Xiaomi is that they just make way too many phones. So it's difficult to get devs to get interested.
I think the Poco F3 has the best chance
People who do not travel have no option. Also, it's the EXACT same device just named differently everywhere, so Devs do not really have to any extra tweaking. I'm guessing, other than adding different configs so the device is recognized and flashed correctly nothing majorly deviating may be required.
Having said that the Vivo Iqoo 7 also deserves a good look this time from the modding community, it's going to sell by the bucket-loads and deservingly at that. The cams are miles better along with the 66w charging and in-built unannounced (sh*t google-dialer) call recording capability. I might just pick one up.
STAY FAR AWAY from the disaster of the 888 chips, all hail Qualcomm marketing division and Samsung fabrication.
EDIT: Sorry, seems like the wrong section, bye bye 888 K40 Pro/Mi11X Pro. No 888, even for free, do not need a portable 5nm grill.
Nobody is making any custom kernels/ROMs that I'm aware of for Mi11 or Redmi K40 Pro Plus. I sold mine (888 throttles too much, bad Qualcomm design, way too OC'd for consistent performance). Sorry for the bad news - most people are ditching their 888s in the Lineage group that I was in and they gave up on a fundraiser for it. Just these phones run way too hot and the chip is not properly configured (they tried to push it TOO FAR).... Even though the Mi11 is probably the most popular 888 out there, I only see development on OnePlus 9 / Pro series. Hate to be the spoiler here.

The issue with Vivo is they don't follow the GPL = no source code bro.
Just now, it is launched in India ( mi 11xpro ) and still people haven't receive devices yet, I am sure more people will be joining soon in some months.
If you stuck with Xiaomi well, I have no idea if any custom ROMs will be released. If so they are probably floating around China somewhere...
