[Q] S2 fails to boot, suspected dead..HELP! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My old Galaxy S2 (i9100 - rooted with Siyah) randomly rebooted and failed to boot since. I ordered a new Anker 1900mAh battery but nothing doing, same goes for different charger/outlet.
I don't know what could be wrong or what else I could do. Is the data on the internal salvageable at all? Some of it is backed up but most of it no.
Please help me with any suggestions!

Able to boot into download or recovery mode at all? (Volume Down/Up + Home + Power)

No that doesn't work either

I'm starting to think it's probably the Siyah. But I'm not sure what version of Siyah I had on the phone to reflash. Also, will the reflash erase my internal data files?
Please advise.

Bump, can anyone please help me?
Will reflashing the Siyah erase all my internal data? or is there a reflash method via odin that'll keep my internal data?

No, reflashing siyah will not wipe your internal data. You can flash siyah under ODIN, CWM or TWRP. Siyah is not under development any more so I'd advise you to use a different kernel. If your android version is stock jelly bean, go with apolo kernel 4.14. If on kitkat, go with apolo 7.1.

Thanks. I'll just reflash siyah because its what I have and I'm not proficient with GS2. I need to remember what ver I had. Can't use cwm because the phone doesn't boot at all, can't go to recovery. Odin is my only choice here.

OK, I tried to flash via Odin v3 but the phone isn't recognized. I tried the power+home+ vol up, nothing. I already have the Samsumg drivers and KIES isn't running.
Can someone please help me as a matter of urgency? Thanks!

1. What version of android did you use before your phone dead?
2. Stock or AOSP?
3. Does your phone offline chargable?
4. Can you see the Galaxy SII black screen when you turn your phone on?
5. If yes, what happens next?

Still trying to fix this:
1. ICS; Siyah Kernel, it rebooted once or twice suddenly and then it no longer boots at all..doesn't start.
2. Stock
3. I think it does charge
4. Nothing happens. Feels dead.

[Q] Broken recovery, bad kernel, and id10t error

Last week I flashed LD3 for my Galaxy S2 i777. Today I was going to flash CM9. Every time I tried to boot into recovery it just started the phone.
I figured I could use mobile odin to flash a new kernel and it would fix it. Like an idiot I used a Gingerbread kernel on my phone running an ICS rom. So of course my phone froze on the "Galaxy S2" screen.
I couldn't boot into recovery and freaked out because I couldn't boot into dl either. I ordered a jig but kept fiddling in the meantime. I found that if I hook my phone to the USB, wait for the battery charging icon, take the battery out, then hold the down button it would boot into dl mode. Then I had to put the battery back in before I clicked continue or else it just reset.
Ok, so got into DL mode. I grabbed the stock rom and kernel from XDA site and flashed them with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 (can't post links yet).
The phone starts and setup mode begins. It shows the android figure and says click it. Now all kinds of errors pop up telling me different google services weren't working and force close. When you click the android figure it goes to setup wizard screen but nothing happens (except more android service errors).
Can someone help me out here? I've been at it 5 hours and searched this forum high and low. My thought is there are some ICS elements left behind in there it is trying to load, but I could be way off.
I still can't boot into recovery mode, just DL.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the stock rom and kernel?
I did not do a full wipe. How can I go about that without logging into recovery? I'm googling that now but if you have linkage I would appreciate it.

dont need to wipe when using Odin/Heimdall.
To OP:
there is only factory recovery, no CWM, you could always just flash a kernal from the DEV section, get CWM, flash CM9.
If I flash another kernel wouldn't I still have the same problem? I'll go ahead and give it a shot. Any you recommend for any reason or other?

So let me get the straight...you're on unrooted stock right now? If that's true, you should:
1. Do a factory reset from settings.
2. Use Odin to flash the Stock with Root package.
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah.
4. Use CWM to flash what you want after that.

recovery is in kernal. If you flash a kernal from the DEV section you'll get CWM recovery, then you can flash your CM9 that you wanted, after a wipe data/factory reset.

Yes, but if he flashes said kernel with Odin, it'll trip his flash counter. I'm just telling him the safe way to do it, Mobile Odin.
I've already tripped my counter. I have a jig that will be here tomorrow so I can use it to reset the counter.
I can't use mobile odin because I can't log into my phone. I can only use desktop Odin.
All the files I am digging up look like .zip made for cwm. Could someone help guide me towards a kernel I can flash from desktop?

Either Entropy's DD or Siyah. You can open the zip and extract the zimage; the zimage is the kernel.
I just tried using Syiah:

I can't get past the setup screen.
And I still can't access recovery.

Flash the return to stock package from Odin again. Something must have gone wrong with it the first time.
well thats wierd. Sorry man but are you doing it right?
vol down and power. hold it untill the screen flashes twice.
I flashed stock 3 times now. I couldn't get into recovery before this (manually or with rom manager) and still can't. It starts like its going into recovery then just resets and loads normally.
Down is for dl mode, up is recovery.
I think the lack of ability to boot into recovery and the android service errors may be related.

Forget recovery. You shouldn't be worrying about recovery until after you get your phone booting.
New thought: maybe your download of the stock package is corrupted. Try to download it on your computer again. Download the one with root. If that fixes it, you can go use Mobile Odin to flash the Siyah kernel.
To get into recovery hold down both volume up, volume down, and power button and don't let go until recovery comes up.

Phone bricked, help needed!!

Hi guys
I have just flashed Omega v8.1 to my phone and reflashed CWM touch, rebooted into recovery and now my phone won't boot. It turns on and just displays the "Samsung Galaxy S3" screen. I have tried flashing via the Galaxy s 3 toolkit but this requires USB debugging to be enabled. It looks as though it is not enabled as the toolkit does not recognise my phone.. The only thing I can do is boot it into download mode.
Any clues??
Thanks
If you can go on download mode, then flash stock firmware via odin.

Firstly your phone is fine, it can be easily fixed one way or another.
Can you still boot into recovery?
If not, reflash recovery using ODIN via Download mode
Once you have access to the recovery, try wiping the following:
Data/Factory reset
Cache
Dalvik Cache
Format /system (probably not required but just in case)
And then reflash the omega ROM, making sure it is not corrupt; maybe redownload/check MD5 sum to be sure.
If, for whatever reason you are still having problems with the phone not booting into Android, I would try flashing a different ROM for the time being.
Also, you posted this in the wrong section
Just flash the stock rom?
Yep bricked phone isn't really a problem, unless it's hardware related.

Ive tried flashing stock ROM via ODIN through the toolkit but this requires USB debugging mode. The issue is not with Omega as I was able to use my phone after flashing, I think the CWM flash didnt work properly.
How else can I flash via ODIN, the toolkit is the only way I know.
Thanks for the comments guys...

I d say, simply get odin separately, then re-create the same settings as when the toolkit does it.
It really is very simple once you ve done it once or twice Don t panic and take the time to make sure the right boxes are checked and double-triple check then reboot in Download mode, plug it in then gogo !

If I select flash via odin in the toolkit (option 8), it says make sure that USB debugging is enabled... If i try and continue it just waits for usb debugging and does not flash.

Ok, sry, then the toolkit reboots your device first to download mode via adb, take the already given advice to use Odin itself, just download it put the Rom tar (or tar.md5) into pda, make sure that only auto reboot and reset time is checked, reboot to download mode continue by pressing up, plugin the cable and press the start button at Odin.
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9300 mit Tapatalk 2
Forget running the toolkit, forget USB debugging mode. You do not need it for now.
And there is no need to download or setup ODIN or anything like that.
Just go to folder/directory where you installed the toolkit (usually C:\Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit) and look for the file called 'Odin3_v3.07' or 'Odin3_v3.04' or whatever version you find. Then run it; tada, ODIN is running now!
Now, put your phone in download mode. To do this, hold VOL DOWN and HOME and POWER buttons together and let go when you see the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' logo come up.
Then it will load up a screen that says press VOL UP to continue (and enter download mode). Press it.
Now it should say 'Downloading do not turn off target!'
Connect your USB Cable and proceed to flash a new CWM recovery using ODIN
Then once you have flashed a new recovery, boot into it (VOL UP & HOME & POWER buttons together).
Then follow my instructions from my previous post.

1) Make sure the phone is turned OFF (take out battery, wait 10 seconds, replace battery, make sure nothing appears on screen)
2) Press+Hold the VOL UP and HOME buttons, together
3) Now, whilst holding these two buttons together, press+hold the POWER button
4) Keep all of these buttons held down, don't let go even if you see the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' logo screen, ignore it and keep holding those three buttons down
5) Once you see the recovery screen, you can let go of the buttons and start using the recovery as you wish

If you can't afford to loose your data, try flash an exFAT supported kernel

Looking @ boeffla it says on the site:
Note: This kernel is only for Samsung based Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.x) roms!!! Do not install it on CM or AOSP based roms!!! And do not install on latest Samsung 4.2 leaks !!!
I am running 4.2.2, is it ok, to flash it?
Q: pressing power button holding, no option to boot into recovery, how can I change this?

Ow, that's the reason that explains all, don't use boeffla with 4.2.2, there are no kernels yet that I'm aware of for that firmware.
I don't recommend you 4.2.2 yet, not perfect yet.
For recovery, you have to press power+home+vol up, then release power button (not the others) once you see the first logo.
As said no kernels for 4.2.2 though the leaked rom is itself very stable for a beta rom .

My issues are:

I can flash using odin using a usb jig to put it in download mode
So... What do you propose to do?

My issues are:
I cannot go in Recovery mode since Home button doesn't work
If I select reboot to recovery mode the phone restart several times and finally boots successfully
So... What do you propose to do?
1) Flash a stock rom via Odin (so I do not need the Home button)
2) Is it possible to flash a newer version of Cyanogenmod via odin?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I have the same issue, I was in CM 10.1.1 stable and home button not working.
Then, I tried to flash a stock ROM via Odin, and now my phone is stuck in a bootloop...
I tried to flash different ROMS (always stock from sammobile.com) but every time the result is the same: bootloop.
The problem is that as my home button is not working, I cannot go into recovery mode to do a factory reset or flash a custom ROM, neither in download mode (I use a home made JIG for this).
I have also tried to flash the correct OMAP pit file, hoping for it to do a full wipe, but did not work either, my phone is still in a boot loop.
My last hope would be to do a OMAP flash as described here: link
But I am not sure it will fix the problem and this solution is quite risky...
Does anyone have another idea / suggestion ?
Also, I am not confident in changing my home button as it is necessary to remove the LCD first...
@GamingDj: I did not found any i9100g compatible DorimanX kernel, only i9100...
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers
Help
Any help on this issue please ?
My phone is still dead
Fixed it !
I found a way to make it work, and I think it can be useful to some other people.
Here is what I did:
Remove the battery and insert it back in
Insert a USG jig to enter Download mode
Flash a stock ROM from sammobile.com using ODIN, Auto-reboot should be UNCHECKED
Phone will stay in Download mode after the flash is complete. This way the phone will NOT install the package yet
Remove the battery and insert it back in
Plug the JIG to enter Download mode again
Flash the right version of CWM kernel
Reboot the phone
What it did is that the phone tried to install the stock ROM, and ran CWM kernel (instead of the stock one).
The phone boot in Recovery mode with a little instruction at the bottom "Invalid args"
My guess is that CWM does not have the same API and failed to execute the commands.
But... Who cares ? I was in Recovery mode
I was able to Wipe data/Factory reset and wipe cache. Phone is back to life (Home button still broken though...).
Hope this tread can help others in the same position...
Cheers !
Can u use adb?
then, you can enter the recovery mode by using adb reboot recovery

Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 (YP-GS1 Europe) stuck on recovery menu

Hi guys, I've got the European version of the Galaxy player 3.6, and I'm stuck on recovery: The home button doesn't work, and I believe it's because I flashed 4.2 kernel by mistake, when on android 2.3.6. I can't turn it on, because it loads up the recovery menu. I have tried to search for this issue but I haven't found an answer, so I posted it here, is there anything I can do or is this dead for good? Thanks in advance

I never had this 'firmware upgrade' problem before. So im not really familiar to it. Where exactly is the firmware upgrade screen showing in the device or in odin?

It's on the device.. Uhm it's basically something that appears whenever I turn on the phone, I can't access recovery or anything else, I can get to the part where it asks me to press vol up, but when I let go of the other buttons to press vol up it goes to the firmware screen, and I've tried almost everything, I tried not letting go, pressing volume first then letting go, trying to outspeed it, but it just won't work

Hmm, I dont really know what else to add to this. Maybe try using adb to get to download mode.
And what exactly the kernel you try to flash? Can you link it?

Yes, it was this one :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39342399&postcount=1
at first the touchscreen didnt work, I don't really remember what I did after that and then just got stuck on recovery, now I cant even access recovery..
How do I use ADB?
EDIT, I flashed a stock rom with odin, but the kernel is probably still wrong, since I can't use the touchscreen.. but not stuck at that firmware thing anymore.. I'll try flash the kernel you recommended
EDIT 2: I can't flash it for some reason, it gets stuck at NAND Write Start!! any other kernels you can recommend?

So, you can get to download mode? Then you shouldve flashed the kernel first. And then flash stock rom through recovery mode! You dont flash a rom with odin.
ok, so where is that NAND write start showing? if its on ODIN. use another odin version, try this one by androthan http://www.mediafire.com/download/82latn22s1kl7w2/andromint-Odin3-v1.85.zip
built especially for YP-GS1 eu.
Then flash stock kernel by zaclimon. Then boot to recovery and flash stock rom through recovery.
Heres another kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43190038#post43190038 but that kernel is just for that exact rom. And some other features not working. Check out the thread!

Thanks mate, I'll let you know how it goes!
EDIT: I'm flashing a lot of kernels now, trying to get one that works, but no luck, what would I have to do, step by step? I have a stock rom that I flashed with odin.. no touchscreen or buttons working (except for the power button)

Open odin v1.85
Press PDA, select kernel, .tar file (this kernel by zaclimon http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198234 )
Power off device then go to download mode
Click start on Odin.
Now you should be able to boot to recovery.
Wipe cache, data, factory , dalvik
Download stock rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=7404 ) then copy to device
On recovery, select install zip from sdcard, select stock rom ^
Reboot.

I flashed the kernel with odin, but after i got a screen saying samsung, with an error icon or something on the bottom.. and didn't go to recovery, it then booted into the rom I have.. is there a way to get into recovery on this device? I have tried a lot of common button combinations but no luck..

So your phone is unbricked now? Pressing Home + Volume up + Power button is the proper mode in booting to recovery mode. Or if you could access internet on the device, install some apps that let you boot to recovery mode (like the RebootManager). The error at the samsung boot logo is perfectly normal!

It worked before I messed up the 4.2 kernel.. so I don't think it can't be the hardware.. Also the power button works to boot into download mode and recovery..

hahaha uhm, be careful though! I'm certain there's a way to fix it, but since we don't know it.. Would a restore of a back up fix the problem? (curiosity, since I can't even do that )
