[Q] How To Unroot and Unlock/Root Droid DNA - HTC Droid DNA

Hello,
So despite how well the DNA has ran for the past 2 years, I had to replace it due to hardware issues regarding the antennae and battery. I got a replacement and so I need to unroot my current phone and root the one that I'm getting. My two questions are:
How do I unroot my phome and return it to factory default settings?
How do I go about rooting my new phone (if I can)? Do I unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP and that's it or is there more to it?

Unroot and return to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293919
It depends on what firmware your phone ships with. Earlier firmware was revone, moonshine, rumrunner or firewater depending on firmware... Latest OTA cannot get root at the moment. Give it a few and you may get root with an updated sunshine.

My replacement has 2.07, so "moonshine " (I have 0 idea what that means) will work.
For the Unroot thread: TL: DR. I have NO idea what that thread is trying to say about moonshile/revrun/facepalm etc. all that is doing is confusing the hell out of me.
My old phone was rooted 2 years ago so IDK what process I used to root it. And I sure as hell don't know which out of the million ways to unroot it I need for my phone. It's running Viper Sense 5.5, so do I need to return to a stock rom first before unrooting?
EDIT: Tried Rooting, ADB DOES NOT WORK IN BOOTLOADER!!! When my phone is on ADB recognizes my phone perfectly but not when it's in the bootloader! I get an error in Windows (8.1) saying "USB Device Not Recognized" http://i.gyazo.com/dbeeddc4070f2cfca3e9bd588b333637.png. I tried the methods that involve installing drivers but they do not work. When I get off of work I will try the 3.0 method that doesn't involve the Samsung drivers, but other than that is there a way to fix this issue?

I don't have Windows 8 or 8.1 I heard there is driver issues with those versions. Windows 7 and Linux work like a charm

Firewater is the way to go now. I tried rummy but got no where. Firewater was a breeze. Just as simple set of commands and I was done in less than 5 min.
I have to agree with mobitote. Very easy with firewater.
If I use firewater will it erase everything on the phone like a factory reset?

I just did mine a couple of days ago using Firewater. As far as I recall, it doesn't wipe anything. I would back your stuff up just in case though. But, I'm pretty sure it doesn't touch it.
Lol, I thought firewater was just a play on words for rumrunner and moonshine. After I saw so many responses about it, I Google it and low and behold there is firewater
Firewater s-off worked perfectly on my stock 4.2.2 3.06 now s-off with unlocked bootloader. Then I flashed trwp recovery and SuperSu Now looking forward to flashing some roms. :

4.4.2 ota root

I could find no information on this sorry if its been brought up already. I have never rooted my DNA. I have all my other previous phones though. I am now running 4.4.2. So my phone is completely stock. How would I go about obtaining root and unlocking recovery.
They patched the rumrunner exploit so... You can try firewater but there is no guarantee anything will work.

Trying Firewater if it doesn't work could it harm my phone or if it doesn't work it just doesn't do anything?
Nope of it doesn't work your phone won't be touched. I don't think that one was blocked so it should work. The only way your phone can be harmed in the process is of you unplug it while the exploit is running. In simple terms once you start the exploit don't touch anything until it says complete.

did this work?? I need to know cuz im in the same boat
Just tried and i got a temp root, which allowed me to run firewater for S-Off on the 4.4.2 ota.
1.) Install the necessary drivers
2.) Install and gain temp root with weaksauce, from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699089
3.) After obtaining Temp root (TuneInRadio will appear in your notification bar if its running) Run Firewater (normal, rooted device method) and your golden: http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/
Make sure to follow all the instructions for Weaksauce and Firewater.

It didn't have to have a pin/passcode/pattern. However, firewater didn't cause the phone to reboot at all, and neither did weaksauce temp root. So i wouldn't image it would be an issue anyway (but possibly). Just disable your lock before you run firewater.
Its time....
Thanks for the info, I think its time for me to root this phone now. I was nervous because I jumped the gun with KK and now I was looking all over to find out whats the best way with the new update. This is the only thread that even mentioned it, so hope this runs smoothly for me. I havent rooted a HTC phone since my Rezound! I hope I can shake the rust off myself and do it right the first time!

Rooting on lastest update 4.4.2

So with the new HTC sync Windows 8.1 recognize my phone while it is booted into android adb and fastboot. But once I boot into boot loader and try to run Firewater its a whole different story. The pc no longer recognizes the phone and firewater does not run at all. Any advice?
Update: also how do I disable the lock screen on android 4.4
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using XDA Free mobile app
If you can get your hands on a Windows 7 machine that's the best way to get your phone soff. I don't think anyone has really used Windows 8.1 as it and our DNA don't get along unless you do something with the drivers. I remember there was a thread talking about Windows 8 and the DNA a while ago. Try searching but I'm not sure if they ever solved it.
In terms of disabling the lock screen it's no longer an option in sense. However if you download the app called no lock in the app store it will get rid of your lock screen.
Hope this is somewhat helpful.

The temp root doesn't really work anymore on Verizon devices.
You need to run weaksauce for temp root, then use Firewater.
I'm already s-off so I can't confirm if it works or not but it worked on the latest m7vzw update and m8vzw update.

[Q] Updating with RUU on rooted phone

A friend of mine got this phone after his iPhone 4 got stolen (I'm trying to convert him) and he asked to get the latest firmware so naturally I began to root and installed TWRP on his device (he got a used one that's on HBOOT 2.09) but after he said he doesn't care if it's rooted. I tried to update it through the settings on the phone but, naturally after forgetting about that, it just boots into the recovery. Can I just update it through the RUU or will that bring on complications?
You can use ruu. The ota won't get you the latest firmware, if your HTC dev unlocked I believe you need to lock it before running ruu. If your going to want root/custom recovery I would recommend getting soff it makes things easier from a support perspective.
So many times my friends ask me if I can fix their issue and a lot of my suggestions usually require root.

Yes. But I would strongly recommend gaining s-off before ruu. S-off is rather easy to do, either Rumrunner or firewater will work. Then ask you have to do is ruu and install twrp and rom of your choice.

I was going to S-Off it then update but since he's on 2.09 the only S-off method requires Ubuntu and I just didn't want to deal with downloading Ubuntu, dual booting, installing drivers again, then doing the process since my internet is unholy slow (It took like 2 hours just to download the RUU for 4.3)

[Q] Unlocked bootloader, but still S-on after trying many things

Hello to all.
I have not rooted a phone in quite a while, since the original Evo. Here's the rundown of what I've been experiencing lately:
I unlocked the bootloader using the HTC dev method, it went smooth. To obtain s-off (I was on the latest OTA of 3.17.651.5), I attempted rumrunner. Everything went fine until I got an error with rumrunner. I then tried the windroid toolkit, flashed TWRP (v2.7.1.0) which was a success. When I flashed superuser from windroid, it rebooted me to recovery to flash the zip file "superuser.zip", but it did nothing. I looked on this forum and found a supersu zip file. I tried flashing a couple versions of the supersu (1.25, 2.01) but no luck. For every one I attempted to flash, I would get the message that said successful but no s-off. After confirming the flash, it would say "flashing file 1 of 1", but then switch to saying "flashing file 1 of 0". I ended up flashing a rom (CM11-20131217), which put the phone into a bootloop (I got this resolved by downgrading to TWRP 2.6.3.0, flashing the kernel for the CM11, then flashing the rom, which of course still kept me S-on.)
So basically, I have an unlocked bootloader, with TWRP 2.6.3.0 as a recovery, on CM11-20131217 build, yet I'm still S-on. Is there a certain version of supersu or superuser that I should be flashing? How can I achieve S-off?

You have to run Rumrunner again. But flash stock rooted before you do (I don't know if it'll work while on CM).
Thanks for the quick reply. I will give that a shot, hope it does work. Is there a certain version of that I should flash before running rumrunner again?

Okay, thanks!
After getting some time here and there, I attempted to flash a few stock rooted roms with no luck. I'm not sure if it's because of the rom that I am currently on. not s-off or what. A lot of the stock root roms I do find have a requirement that you must be s-off to flash. I even tried running RUU's (4.13.651.4 and 3.17.651.4) for specific roms, but they gave me errors and would not continue each time. I remember when rooting and gaining s-off was much simpler than this lol. I don't even know if it is worth continuing to keep trying.
Check the link below for a ROM that is S-on friendly. Make sure you follow the directions in the thread to get it installed. Once you've done this you can go for S-off, at which time you should be able to flash whatever ROM you'd like.

Thanks for that! It worked with meanbean. I ran rumrunner again and it gave me an error, saying something about an update on rumrunner.us. I gave firewater a shot, and after it said "the first bottle is open...chugging", the screen stays blank for a while and firewater instructs me to try again and ends the process. From what I read last night around my searches, I'm supposed to get a notification on the evo asking for superuser permission but that didn't happen. I'm guessing this is due to the wrong supersu being flashed.
Glad I got a little further, I'm just going to play around with it until something gives and I am s-off
There's a setting in the su app that will let you grant su access to all apps automatically and without a prompt. That should get rid of that problem.
I wouldn't go with those settings for any other purpose though, obviously.

Weaksauce is an exploit for Verizon phones that can't be unlocked with HTC Dev so it's pointless to try it on the EVO LTE.

Also, while you need htc sync manager to unlock your boot loader, it usually really screws with any other adb tools, so uninstall that too.

First thing is that in order to run any RUU device boot loader must be 're-locked to do this enter into fastboot plug in to pc and within your Android unlocker folder that u use to unlock your device hold shift and right click anywhere in the folder to open command window then type : fastboot oem lock . This will lock the bootloader, now you will be able to run RUU. Just keep in mind that you may only go up Android versions levels ,, running RUU will stabilize your device and fixes the sectors which u may have damaged during the moding in the RAM .. Now for obtaining S-OFF the only option for you (since u upgraded) is to use DirtyRacun witch uses Ubuntu Live CD method and it does work. ***Now, if you just want unlocked bootloader with SU permission so u can flash rooms (not firmware or radio) and don't care about S-OFF then let me know to show you the options available at this time .. I repeat *you may only go up in android versions , in case that is necessary to go down then you need to deal with the CID. By switching and modifying the CID only then you are allowed to downgrade the Android Build versions
Dirty Racun isn't the only option for S-off
He's already unlocked his bootloader and has root. He's on the latest firmware version for the old partition layout: it's well-documented that methods like Rumrunner work.

Excuse my ignorance but but how did you get sprints HTC evo 4g LTE codename jewel to work on at&t. I didn't know you could do that. (hint: are you sure you have the right phone? )
Anyways. As long as its an HTC it should be fine right? The problem would be the same.
