I absolutely need a tablet with pen functionality, and I'm stuck between the 3 choices above. Appreciate any advice from the community:
HTC Flyer Pros:
Very good aftermarket "hacking" support in term of custom ROM, upgrading OS, etc... I've seen what good this can do, my 2 year old Sprint Epic 4G (running ICS) absolutely defeats all the current generation phones with A9 dual core (but running Gingerbread) in benchmarks
HTC Flyer Cons:
Hardware is two generations out of date (CPU is from the A8 Cortex era)
Thinkpad Tablet Pros:
A9 Cortex era hardware... so only one generation out of date, but the Nvidia Tegra 2 was the worst of the A9 SoC.
Thinkpad Tablet Cons:
Not as vibrant an aftermarket support as the HTC Flyer. I've seen many frustrated posts here on this forum.
HTC Jetstream Pros:
A9 Cortex era hardware... so only one generation out of date, and specs wise better than Nvidia Tegra 2. Best hardware out of the 3
HTC Jetstream Cons:
I think the aftermarket support is dead. No ICS. Only one custom ROM exist.
I can't wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to launch and it's too pricey for me too. Which tablet would you choose if you were in my shoes?

If 7 inch screen not an issue, I would go for Flyer as after market support is best with it amongst options. However, the Jetstream is relatively new and its hardware absolutely rocks. If you looking at the option of notes, etc - note that good 3rd party notes applications available all work with Android 3.x and above only. So Flyer you would have to upgrade or whatever - but people seem to have issues with Honeycomb on the Flyer. My personal choice would still be Jetstream because of its hardware, screen size - yes it lacks a bit in after market support - but that seems to be changing as more and more people going in for it due to the price drop and as more users get added, more developers are taking an interest. I feel its just a matter of time before we get something in the form of ICS etc. I don't know much about the Thinkpad tablet - have seen it superficially - it seems to be a good alternate to the Jetstream - but as you said, it doesn't have as great hardware as the Jetstream and the after market support is so-so. So if you looking for a long term tablet which will have good life, its Jetstream. If however, you want something for now and don't mind 7 inch screen, its the Flyer as it has already gotten ICS and a large community.
i wouldnt touch any of them.
the flyer is small and old.
the jetstream still has a bit of petential but you can't tell where its going.
the lenovo also might still get better, but i wouldnt count on it.
truth is, android just isnt good enough. the multitude of devices is killing the OS.
i would check samsung, i think they are about to release a 10 inch tablet with pen support.
also, google are rummerd to announce a 7 inch tablet in the upcoming days.
and most of all - microsoft surface. looks very promising, hopefully microsoft wouldlnt screw it up.
I got my Jetstream on ebay for $250 and I consider it a very good purchase; it's true that the development and user community for the JetStream is very small at the moment; but it is bound to increase with all the price cuts. The hardware on this tablet rocks; mine is rooted, using DoomLord's kernel, running OSI's room without all the att bloatware and I'll tell you this tab feels more responsive and smoother than the Galaxy Tab, Acer, Gtab or any other tablet I've ever used.
Personally ICS doesn't feel that much better than Honeycomb; I ran both on my previous tab and I didn't really notice a big difference on my day to day usage.
The HTC Scribe pen paired with a good note taking app such as Lecture Notes is just great for anyone who takes a lot of notes - maybe a college student like myself.
So I would get the JetStream over the ThinkPad, Flyer or any other tablet in the market at the moment. The key is to get it at a good price like I did; if you have to pay $600 then just wait a little bit longer for the next big thing to come out.

Exactly my thinking. Agree with everything you said.
However, my device is not rooted yet. What Rom did you use. I usually do this but was waiting for something very stable.

You should know better my friend, the first thing you do after you take an android device out of its box is root it.lol.
I'm using OSImood at the moment and its very stable, its basically the stock Rom without all the att junk and some minor tweaks. Galaxy v3 is another ROM that seems to be very popular however I installed it and it didn't work out for me - even though it was my fault because I should have installed doomlord's kernel before the ROM and I did it afterwards so you might want to install the kernel immediately after root and recovery.

Ok. I'll give it a go. My HD2 and SG2 all had custom Roma all the time. Can't wait to get rid of the bloatware.
Yeah, I read that on many places, install doomlord's kernel first.
Thanks for all yr suggestions.
Edit.
1. Unlocked using HTC Dev.
2. Installed Doomlord's CWM
3. Installed Doomlord's kernal
4. Installed Doomlord's WiFi modules.
Now I just have to install a custom Rom tonight. Great.

Wouldn"t touch the thinkpad
i PURCHAED the thinkpad for the stylus. There are many of us with serious palm rejection issues on the thinkpad. Upgraded to ICS... and palm rejection issues remain (even in pen-only mode). Just google thinkpad "palm rejection" issues... you'll see the threads of us complaining.
I want to get a 10 inch tablet, but I don't want to wait for the rumored Nexus 10. I don't need a whole lot of space or power, but I do want something reliable.
I only ever buy Nexus phones, so I want something with that reliability. Not like the time I tried an HTC phone and it was an unreliable piece of sh*t with terrible build quality.

I don't think you,ll really find what you're looking for apart from a rumored nexus 10. The closest thing may be the asus infinity, but that still isn't stock android. Many rumors are pointing to something: phone, tablet, or both at the end of October. So it may be worth waiting one more month...
The answer relies heavily on how much money you want to spend.
I got a 2nd hand Galaxy Tab 10.1 which you can pick up for around £270 (wifi only), and it's been nothing but awesome. The only times I've had issues have been when I've put custom ROMs on there that aren't 100% complete (mostly Jelly Bean ROMs). The stock Honeycomb ROM that was on it when I got it was awesome.
It's solid, good quality, but still quite light. I'd really recommend you just go to a local supplier and get your hands on a few and play with them. There's a world of difference between a 7" and 10" experience, so don't be swayed by the "available now" feature of some smaller ones. As much as the Nexus 7 looks awesome, I like my girth

NEXUS 11*
- 11” Super PLS TFT
- 8 Megapixel
- 2 Megapixel
- Octa-Core A15 / A7 (Exynos 5410)
- Micro SD 64 GB (Rumoured)
* Needs to get approvement from Google (Worlds first Octa-Core tablet)
source SamMobile
what you all thinking about this?
Edit: this would be the Nexus 11 without the Google brand, and this one's definitely likely to have microSD support.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 11
- 11” Super PLS TFT
- 8 Megapixel
- 2 Megapixel
- Dual-Core A15 (Exynos 5250)
- Micro SD 64 GB
Want. Especially with a MicroSD
If it is real and has the sd card support I'll upgrade in a heartbeat... Otherwise I'm happy with what I have for a long time
Aww I just bought my nexus 10 2 weeks ago I was hoping it'd be "new" for at least a year lol but I probably wouldn't upgrade since I just got mine also I'd rather have Google team up with another company. It seems that samsungs support for the tablet is very poor.

I doubt it would get approved with a microSD slot. The Nexus line of things are known for not having those these days. I also hope it gets the T658 GPU, or even better a 2nd gen Midgard core. I doubt ill buy an upgrade to this tablet till it has at least those specs to make it worthwhile. The T658 has twice as many shader cores as we do, and twice as many arithmetic pipelines per shader core.
is it gonna be the same resolution as the Nexus 10? please colour calibrate the screen this time Samsung!
Even if it doesn't get released as a Nexus device, it wouldn't stop Samsung from releasing it as their own device.

Now, Samsung just needs to release 9 and 12 inch tablets so they can cover the spectrum. Nutters.

Like the guy above me said, hit and miss. Some turn out to be true some not, but even if Google were not to approve this tablet, it will come out as Samsung tablet just without the octacore maybe, but it's definitely coming.
I'm so glad I held back from getting the 10, I actually made three attempts to buy one of Google and each time it didn't go through. I'm in Ireland and was using a proxy!
I would like, as someone said, another company to do the next Nexus tablet. HTC would be my first choice then Asus but that probably won't happen.
Anyone think it will be released at Google I/O? I really want a tablet, can't wait much longer!
when is google I/O
Not a chance in the world this will be released at Google IO in a couple weeks.
There has already been talks of the Nexus Nexus 7, so we will see Google confirming final specs and a release date for that. We will probably also see details or a launch of the next Android version as normally happens during Google IO, we will hopefully get details on the next Nexus phone, and we will probably also hear more on Google Glass and probably Google Fiber.

If they are then I will be on the N10 for a while. I really hope Samsung DOESNT get the next Nexus. Their hardware is decent (not great) but they completely ignored this device just like they did the previous Nexus phones.
No dock, no cable using the pogo pins, the cover is overpriced and doesn't do much of anything, useless magnets, etc. It looks like so much could have been supported but Samsung didn't care.
LG showed how it should be done, they got the charger out, MHL, the bumper/case and even the logoless headphones (yeah I know that isnt huge but its more than Samsung has done). And the phone, I had the Galaxy Nexus and my Nexus 4 made that phone look and feel like a turd immediately. Considerably better design and a far more rigid chassis.
Not happening. ^^ Nexus devices are rather a solid proof of concept for Android than some experimental whatever. If this 11" thing appears, I think it will be released by Samsung (without Google Nexus label).
I'm kind of hoping that another company picks up the next Nexus 10 other than Samsung as well. I believe ASUS has done a great job with the Nexus 7 and the Transformer series, HTC could knock it out with front facing BoomSound type speakers on a tablet, or even HP which seems to be falling in love with Android, which shoukd have been the case two years ago. Plus new generation of processors are right around the corner that could make for a great device (Tegra 4, Snapdragon 800, Exynos-55something). Having just sold my Transformer Infinity, I'm excited to see what the next generation of devices will be.
Why us this news? Is it such a shock that the Samsung OctoFaux is getting used in a tablet? Is it such a shocker that Samsung is incorporating an SD card slot with dual cameras?
It gets old hearing the same old stuff rehashed or companies 'innovating' while really just using the newest components at a given time. Shock me Samsung, build an aluminum tablet, build a tablet that feels stronger then a thin piece of plastic which pops and creeks when I hold it or gives in the middle (note 10.1 and gtab2)..... that would be news
/end rant

same here, it truly is the best tablet out there but I just couldn't go for it after all the trouble people were having not even about the tablet but the service. And it won't be released, it could be revealed there, and if it is I would not expect it to be out until at least November.

The wireless charging dock for the Nexus 4 was only released ~6 months AFTER the release of the Nexus 4. That is not 'how it should be done'.
"How it should be done" is that there is a wide range of peripherals available day 1.
Hi all,
I love installing custom roms on my hardware and seeing what they can do. It's just plain fun for me
That said, I've had two tablets, a Nook Tablet and a Sero 7 Pro. Both are great, but the Nook took nearly a year to crack the boot loader and for the first roms to emerge, and despite some dedicated work by XboxeXpert and other on the Sero, Hisense refuses to release the source and development is pretty much paralyzed over there.
I'm sick to death of it. My wife has promised me a new 10 inch tablet this christmas, and number one on my shopping list OPEN FOR THE DEVS! Second on the list is decent hardware, followed by reasonable price. I don't need the latest and greatest as long as it performs decently.
Searching the interwebs for this information, I find tons of threads about the best roms, the best tablets, etc, but I've not found any (including here) about the most open, and the most dev support.
So I'm looking for thoughts - what is the most dev-friendly 10" tablet? Which tablet has the most roms available? If you are a dev, which tablet do you love working on?
Thanks for any ideas!
TM
P.S: If you are a manufacturer or sales rep lurking the forum (we know you do) understand that this sale will be entirely based on whether your stuff is unlocked. I'm talking to you, Hisense...
Nexus or Samsung

If you want good support and plenty of custom ROMs, I'd personally go with either the Nexus 10 or a Samsung tablet. When it comes to the Nexus the reasons are obvious & Samsung is a widely used brand and will most likely have a great user base & dev support.
The Nexus 10, hands down. But don't go buy one today. The 2nd generation is rumored to be unveiled soon.
Im after a budget android phone for around 300. I would like it to have as many peripherals as possible so as to support future development of software that i might write specially audio related. Would like it to have good support. I dont want to buy a phone and never get android updates and not be able to install cyanogenmod. Would like it to be snappy and the display to be easy to see as i have poor eyes. At the mo its a toss up between the idol 3, asus zen 2, and lenovo note 3. I really like the note 3 but are worried about future support and the fact that cyanogenmod does not officially support. Would appreciate any advice or ideas on other phones
Cheers
