[Q] What market for, gsm/sim? = BIGGEST PHABLET! - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im presuming there a precedent/example for nexus OR htc tablets to have voice capability in xYz market/cellular bands?
I will be happy to import one from anywhere at any price, I just need to know where in the world to look/expect it to show up?!

The best place to look for would be in India. A lot of people see telephony in tablets as a pre-requisite and most OEMs include the said feature.
But, sorry to say, nexus devices are the same everywhere in the world. Both the generations of the Nexus 7 that were released in India did not feature telephony/voice capability.

[Q] Should i get this phone?!

Im thinking of up grading to the Vibrant. Any reason not to? Is there a better phone on the horizen? Im currently with T-mobile and dont want to switch. Thanks in advance!!
Only other choice is the T-Mobile G2 (Oct 6.) or myTouch HD (rumored to release November '10?). I've gotten the Vibrant since week one and don't regret getting it. The Super AMOLED screen is definitely beautiful and one of the things admired most from this phone.
get it
best screen. like a hdtv in your pocket
t-mobile has great 3g speeds
hummingbird > snapdragon
released in 100+ countries, including every major carrier in the US so community support should be huge
there's always better phones on the horizon, but this is the phone i've been waiting for ever since the iphone was announced years ago. and it hasn't disappointed
no it sucks. *at the airport, using vibrant to tether 3g to laptop*
G2 is very appealing and I am considering switching... it comes down to physical keyboard and stock android VS bigger and much better screen, slightly better hardware..

while i understand this viewpoint, touchwhiz is easily disabled. there is also no guarantee that the G2 will get the same OTA updates as the N1 simply because it is stock android. the original droid on verizon is a good example.
but yeah, if you need/want a hardware keyboard the G2 is a better choice (obviously). unless you can deal with sprint and the epic
I got two. My wife approved.
My 3rd android phone (just from passion of the OS), this is by far my most favorite of them. Speed, Design, Display... love everything about it.
Touchwiz is actually very usable from personal experience and reviews. It added alot of 'shortcuts' that makes life alot easier. For example, swipe notification bar to change brightness while outdoor, instead of going through 3-4 menus. Overall, Vibrant is a very solid phone at stock, definitely recommend it.
Only issues now are the GPS and Froyo, mostly Froyo.
+Amazing looking screen, ignore the iPhone 4 people and their color fidelity nonsense, the Vibrant is more colorful that the iPhone 4 and looks a lot better when viewing pictures and movies.
+Runs very fast, 1ghz processor.
+Very thin and light compared to the iPhone 4 (especially now that everyone has put a case on theirs), the back is plastic not glass, but I like saving the weight and I think the patterned back looks fine, comes with 2 colored backplates in the package I got.
+Android, with an open market, unlike At&t's flavor, the Captivate.
+Currently the best T-mobile phone available if you need to get a new one right now.
+Shoots 720p at 30fps. Big selling point, my friend bought a flip video and my phone takes the exact same quality of video and I don't have to carry an additional device, the camera is 5mp and also quite good.
Some downsides
-T-mobile took out some features from the stock Galaxy S, including fm radio, front facing camera and flash. I don't really need a front facing camera or a flash, the night mode works very well and renders a flash almost useless. Fm radio would be nice but I can live without it, I just loaded up my own music.
-Bloatware, it comes with a slew of crappy apps that you cannot remove without rooting. I would strongly recommend rooting, deleting bloatware, and then unrooting (The sales rep. at T-mobile actually recomended this ) It's about as safe as it can get and very easy, 1 click root and unroot, just look for it on xda. Also expect this on other T-mobile phones, except maybe the G2.
If you can wait a little just to see what's planned for the winter you might consider it, but I doubt you will be that disappointed if you buy the vibrant now. T-mobile has had a sad list of Android phones besides the Nexus One, so I doubt there's anything better than the myTouch or G2 coming out.

So you're upset that T-Mobile isn't getting the Samsung Galaxy S Tab? What makes you think that it is 100% on Samsungs part?
This is the SAMSUNG VIBRANT forum, I honestly don't care too much about a tablet because I'll never use it. I just find the tablet and the Vibrant to be irrelevant. If anything.. why would you would a contracted tablet? If anything I would want a WiFi only version and just tether with my phone.
Samsung has been moving away from cutting exclusive deals with wireless operators for its growing slate of mobile devices. It launched its most recent smartphone, the Galaxy, with the top four U.S. wireless operators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG and the fourth-largest U.S. wireless carrier, hasn't yet worked out a deal to carry the tablet, a person familiar with the matter said.

Do you think there'll be Galaxy s II variants in the us?

I dont see the need for galaxy s II variants since the phone has quad band 3g support , but with samsung you never know , hopefully they just put out the original version of the sgs II , variants will slow down updates, what do you think? last time it was a mess with the updates
I hope they will release in us. Otherwise the developer support will be small.

You can be almost 100% certain there will be US variants, at least to the point of adding in support for their 3G and 4G networks for which the stock doesn't have. Specifically T-Mobile and Verizon will definitely have to add in their bands seeing as how AT&T is ready from the stock device. Now, whether or not the carriers will have to lessen or get rid of any other spec to fit their setup is the big question here. I am really hoping nothing gets changed besides the addition of the extra bands, but I have a feeling that may be aiming a little high.
US carriers always wants to make "their" phones look different just to confuse the heck out of people, and be able to call it "their own"
so yeah, it's almost guaranteed we'll seem some minor changes here and there.
hopefully nothing ugly like what they did with the first release of Galaxy S... missing FFC, missing flash, missing memory, missing hard button, etc
each carrier had something slightly missing

t mobile and at & t have NOTHING to change to the original model, verizon and sprint are the ones that need changes because they work with cdma devices, but i would like samsung to stick with the galaxy s II name, it's stupid to confuse the users im guessing sprint will get another version with a keyboard

Can't post a link yet due to post count but just do a google search for "pocketnow galaxy variants" and it should be the first result.

No idea what carrier gets what but it's looking like 3 carriers will carry this (my guess is the standard, AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon).

Nice. I'm slightly more excited now.
Sure, I believe that there will be SGSII variants in the US however, they will be not be released in the next few months because of the delay for the launch in Europe and Samsung's habit of releasing phones a couple months late in the US. Heck, I don't even know why they do this when our country gave them the most SGS sales out of any country in the world.
There will be at least GSM variant and CDMA variant. But other than that, I wish the carriers won't create fragmentation.
It's very likely the original Galaxy S is Quadband WCDMA supported by hardware. I hear people use 1700 on Captivate and use 850 on Vibrant by mixing modems. GS2 should have at least the same ability.
Just one device for all markets, and ensure our updates

I think the model numbers will be different.
The international Exynos version has model number GT-I9100.
There is a high chance tthat they release one here in the US and although I won't like the differentiation or the increased length of time for updates, because of the community here I'm sure I would be able to keepy phone updated wwith a great ROM with the newest firmware.

nice news, but... OMG! those are some horrible choices for names how do they even come up with those awful names?
Maybe it's their new slogan "Attain function within..."
I too will go for the international version, not sure if Bell will commit to this one considering the SNAFU they had with the SGS.

[Q] Will the Jetstream be released internationally?

I've tried looking around the web, but found no information and I'm sure there are people here with superior Google-fu. Are there plans to release the Jetstream to the rest of the world? At the very least, without AT&T branding?
And a related question; does anyone know if they will have spec options (WiFi Only, no pen, etc...)?

not sure, its possible a different model will come out, this is at&t specific with the 4G LTE frequency so it would not work international on LTE. also it doesn't come with the pen, it is a separate $80 accessory, which until Oct 15 they are giving free with the tablet purchase.

Anyone using this in the USA?

Hey all,
Really interested in getting one of these to replace my Mediapad X2. Can anyone tell me how it performs on U.S.A. GSM networks like T-Mo and ATT? Are you getting consistent 4G LTE? Will this handle the upcoming 5G bands? Can the phone portion be operated with and without the speaker enabled? Much obliged!!
Steve
right now got answer by US Huawei chat guy: "might be launched in a couple of months in the USA market".
M3 owner here. Even if it's an incremental update from the M3, it's going to be an awesome unit. That said I just wanted to offer a quick word of caution.
The M3's wifi is 5ghz capable but is disabled by default with a setting you can't change unless you root the device. The reasoning was some really iffy corporate double-talk about FCC conflicts. That said, after rooting this M3 is a dream. I don't know if the M5 will have this same issue in the US, but if the FCC line has not changed you might need to root. And if you need to, strap yourself in- because Huawei root support is sparse at best.
Rooting the M3 was not difficult per se, but a good number of people (including myself) hit snags because there's conflicting data/results as to the best way to get there. Once you get to the proper image and learn how Huawei's partitions work, it's not too bad. Just be ready for a learning curve. It's a far cry from rooting OnePlus...
So if it turns out that the 5ghz comes locked in the US, either be ready to run 2.4 for a while or wait until someone develops root. Good luck!
Thanks for the info, seven. I'm concerned about the wifi issue you discuss, but I'd be more excited to get an LTE phone in the US. Don't know how much longer AT&T will provide the connectivity I need to keep my X2 working.
The thing with the M5 is how long it's taking to get these out there. The phone was released well over a month ago and I can not find a single seller either on Amazon or E Bay. I'm starting to feel as if it was all a joke.
It should work with US LTE. Towards the bottom of this page shows what bands the M5 has and what bands each network uses.
https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-huawei-mediapad-m5-10-lte
This is for the 10 inch, but it should be the same as the 8.
Thanks. Any idea where I can actually buy on of these?

Depending on the return policy, I may pick one up to check it out myself.

Quite often items are cheaper coming from Amazon Germany than the Amazon UK, plus the MediaPad is supplied and delivered by Amazon, not through a third party.

To be honest the 32GB isn't really a problem.
I've loaded all my apps and still have well over 15GB left.
All my photo and video live on the micro SD card.
Did some further investigating. The one currently available in Europe does but have the bands for LTE in the US. Maybe we can hope for an international version, but I doubt very much that this will ever see the light of day in the US. May be a legal issue or something. Otherwise, why wouldn't all manufactures just open up the US bands just for the heck of it. After all, the US is one of the top three consumer markets in the world.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, isn't giving up on the US yet... They really want to sell the P20 here. Hoping they bring the Mediapad M5, too.
https://www.engadget.com/2018/03/30/huawei-isnt-giving-up-on-the-us-just-yet/
This is a link to the Huawei promo info for the M5 on the US Huawei website. The only thing it doesn't have is a 'buy now' button. I'd say for sure, at this time! They are going to be available in the US soon. Really hoping to get one. asap.
https://consumer.huawei.com/us/tablets/mediapad-m5-8/
Nice that it's on the site. Wasn't there when I checked last week. Just hope the 8" gets a US release.
I saw a seller that ships to the US; but they only stock a wifi version of the tab. Hopefully, they will release an LTE version over here. Signs are looking good being that it's on the Huawei US site; but I never count my chickens until they are hatched. BTW, has anyone got answer about whether the tab has an ear speaker for calls or do you have to use a blue tooth?
For calls it is the loud speakers, or Bluetooth. No to the ear speaker.
I guess you could also go wired through the USB C adapter that is supplied not tried that yet.
It does work very well through the speakers if you don't mind being on 'loud speaker' to the world!

Question Support for Australian Carriers?

G'day my fellow XDA'ers (is there such a term).
It's been many years since I have posted.
I have been keenly eyeing the Experia 1 III. With the delay in their launch, yes I know it's available now, Google is now on the precipice of launching the Pixel 6 Pro, which I am also considering.
The key functions I am looking for is the camera and video. I don't shoot alot of video, but when I do, it's for auditions.
The Sony would seem the logical choice here. I also want to use it for everyday snaps and I hear the night-shot does not exist. The Pixel will have this of course.
My questions are:
1. What effort is required to connect the Experia 1 III to Australian carriers Optus or Telstra?
2. I have been reading that I have to load a mod or something like that?
3. What is required of that? And then if so,
4. What do you need to do to get upgrades?
This could be a deal breaker for me.
It's sold by Kogan in Aus, so if you buy it there and it doesn't work with your carriers then its defective and you just return it...
@roughdiamon
Any one else have any suggestions or know what it will take to get the 1 iii to work on Aussie telcos ?
Mainly looking for VoLTE to work.
Apparently it works with VoLTE and WiFi calling on Kogan according to this person: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=289469&page_no=1#2775602
There's just not enough information though. I'd like to know more for New Zealand because I'm considering one myself but it sounds like a pain in the ass to get it working optimally because they're not officially sold here. I'm getting really sick of all these phone manufacturers not selling their phones in more than a select few countries... I don't want more of Samsung's curved screen, Knox-ridden BS...
I just ordered the 1 iii from Kogan, it comes with a free 1month sim, i'll test and see how it pans out.
How did you go with the Kogan Sim?
I have the iii on Optus but no luck with Volte but happy to switch carrier's if it enables Volte.
