I'm trying to make sense of the real difference between the EVO3D's 4GB of internal memory and the Photon/Within's supposed 16+ GB of internal memory.
Is this difference really something to be concerned/though about?
The way I see it, we have been running with 1 GB in most phones in recent history, and most of us just touch the limits of the memory with apps, etc. With the extra headroom of 4GB, I'm not sure there is too much concern for running out of app space (crosses fingers).
So, what is the rest of the memory for? Media? I understand that the internal memory might be faster, but SD cards have already been shown to be fast enough for most purposes (and I believe the Green Hornet comes on the SD card). IIRC, it was quite an anomaly to have the Nexus S store media and other files on the internal memory when it came out.
So, does the 4 GB concern, given the ability to get 32 GB on SD? Or is it a real advantage for the competitors?
It might have something to do with recording in 1080p or 3d . The internal would be faster to record to . Just my thought

Anytime you write/read to internal its always going to be faster than reading from a SD card. This also holds true with your desktop. Reading from your DDR2/3 Memory will always be faster than reading from your SSD/HDD. I think this is where the above poster actually gives some credibility about his claims.
I don't see the big deal. 4Gb is a decent amount of internal. How many people are going to actually need 16gb of internal space? I'm sure someone will reply and tell me they need it for this and this but I'm sure a large percent will do just fine with 4gb. People do just fine with 1gb.
If you download a lot of games then yes go with the SGS or photon.

My thoughts as well. Funny though, isn't Qualcomm (HTC's chip provider) the one thats going to do a gaming pack?

even with 4-8 times the storage on those phones, they are only using 2x as much for app installation, correct? 1GB v 2GB?
I would rather have a 4gb internal and my 16gb class10 sd card then to have 10gn internal w/ no way to use a sd card with it, but then again I keep my 8gb card that came with the evo set up fully as a back-up card, i have a nandroid back-up and main files i use on my sd card set up on my 8gb cardd so all i have to do it restore and go if anything happens and I have to get a new phone.

If you are looking for a phone to do gaming on you should chose Samsung Within due to terga2 over a phone with larger internal storage

It is not confirmed that the Within will have Tegra2, actually, it is highly likely it will have Exynos. The Photon is confirmed to have Tegra2. Also, the SGS2 is likely to have the highest amount of internal storage, with the Photon having the second largest.
I would have loved the 3D to have more internal storage but coming from the 4G it is still a considerable upgrade. Personally I never had an issue with the 1GB on the 4G so I don't consider the 3D's 4GB a liability.
The lower amount of storage on the 3D was probably a way to keep the final cost down given the other specs to make it affordable and I'm fine with that; $199 s a great price for what you get!

I agree we are getting a lot of phone for the money..I thought the same thing with the 4g..now we get a processor that more than twice as fast and four times the internal memory..I don't use a lot of games but my SD card has atleast 10 Roms and 4 full nandroid backups andive never run out of memory..mof I have at least 2 gb left..and that's with stock sd
I suspect there will be far less than 4g actually usable..
I got a low memory error one time so I went thru and unistalled a bunch of stuff I never used. No problem since. And I could probably delete even more stuff.
even 4GB's isn't a whole lot, I always end up with the issue of running out of space on my evo, I switch roms constantly, so Apps to sd doesn't really work for me, I'm hoping I can get away with tons of games installed on just 4gbs.
4GB's of internal on the 3D will be plenty for me. Only recently have I started to have issues with running out of space on the EVO. Ended up just moving a bunch of apps to SD card and all is fine again.

the built in a2sd sucks for this, but the a2sd (like DarkTremmors) that allot of the guys put into their roms works very well with this. I got a 4gd ext3 partition on my sd for this and i NEVER run out of space to install apps (in fact i dont even use 1gb up w/ close to 200 apps)
I'm not going to complain as it is a 16-fold increase of storage for me. Mmm... increased internal storage...
Add my 16 gig sd card and I think I'm golden.

more then enough. This is set aside for apps and OS I believe, and the photon will be the same. The internal space will be partitioned probably for apps and then most of it for storage.
4gb internal is more then enough.
I can see large storage making sense on devices like the nexus s 4g and iPhone because you have no option for an external form of storage but 16/32gb of storage on a device with a micro sd slot is a bit much. I'm not saying they shouldn't make phones with that much, the more the better but I just don't think you need that much. I think 4gb is enough to last us until we upgrade next year.
For the people who plan on having this phone for a second year the internal storage may become an issue in 12-18 months. Next years gen of phones will bring bigger apps, bigger files.

It's odd since many sources seem to suggest that neither version has expandable storage.

I wonder if the decision of lower megapixel by ATT is on purpose so people will not get it over their iPhone5. GSM and fast LTE and microSD is a no brainer though.
Funny thing is the 8MP version apparently takes better pictures than the 13MP version

Rogers seems to suggest that it doesn't have a micro sd slot, but has 32GB built in storage only.
Also, like the Galaxy S (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) series, it seems they will be branding at least a couple of different models as the Optimus G; the AT&T version is the E970 (once rumored to be LG Eclipse?) where I believe the Rogers version will be the E973. Like CXENTE, I'd rather have a micro sd slot rather than the 13MP camera.

The lack of updates for previous LG phones worries me, but they've already promised JB before the end of the year. We'll see.
Going to take some willpower for me to keep from buying this one and waiting to see what else comes up in the next month!

I definitely agree.
13MP on a PHONE???? That's overkill. If you need that pixels, you also need a real lens system.
No removable storage... almost unforgivable. I've got a 32GB mSD already. I'm coming from an HTC Inc, and almost nothing used the internal storage (/mnt/emmc). So, I would rather have 2-4GB internal and a mSD slot.
I'm concerned about the battery... I've had to do the battery yank quite a few times, so .....?
Give me root. CM10 would be nice. Then I'll be "super" happy.
It's confirmed that the ATT version has expandable memory and Sprint version has the 13mp camera. I believe the Sprint version also has expandable memory as well. I'll report back next week when I get mine.

Don't think so. Everywhere I've seen, it has said that AT&T has expandable memory, but Sprint doesn't.
Well I'll find out next week when I get my phone. My att model does have expandable memory though.

Nope still only images music etc. Just tried. Its an ICS thing. This LG Optimus G is really nice though, and I don't like GSM LG phones.

probably different antennas and what not, for Att and maybe something to do with the micro sd card, that's only one 1mm wider or .040 of inch thats,not that much unless, you have little hands then maybe, I work with .001 of inch everyday and .040 isn`t much.
Just like to say, I have the phone now for the past 6 hours and it fits my hands great, I haven't had any issues yet with the screen size or anything. And yes not only does it come with a micro sd slot but it also had a 16GB sd card in it out of the box. It came with no headset though just the sd card and charger, also it does have a 8mp camera but it sure seems to take nice pictures.

I want to buy the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2, but havent decided about which one. Should I go for the 16GB or the 32GB version?
I will use a MicroSD card with it, 64GB, or if possible a 128GB MicroSDXC card. So I will have lots of room for movies, music and pics on the SD card. So, in this scenario, what is the best solution to go for? 16GB or 32GB?
All depends what you plan to use it for. You'll quickly run out of space if you install a few large apps on the 16gb but if you don't use these kind of apps/games, you should be fine with the 16gb

I am already hitting warnings over free space on my 16GB LTE device. I have about 1 dozen games and about 2 dozen small utility apps.
Problem is that the LTE only comes in 16GB variations for now.
Also, be aware that kit-kat doesn't allow free file browser control over the sdcard without root. i.e. without root, you can't manually create and move files on the ext_card (even with the latest File Expert file browser)
Connecting to the PC allows full-access through the PC file browser, though this is not ideal.
Root fixes everything.

I wouldn't recommend that. I just returned my last Note 10.1 2014.
Altogether, I had EIGHT Note 10.1.2014, WiFi and LTE variants.
ALL of them had a faulty display.
ALL of them were locked down using "Knox".
LTE versions are locked against using prepaid cards.
Rooting gets documented by an "eFuse".
Samsung prohibits downgrading to a lower firmware version.
Flooded with bloatware, of course protected against deinstallation and even stopping.
NO (!) software updates for far more than half a year.
And so on...
The Note 10.1 2014 has nice hardware (except the narrow bezels, making it virtually impossible holding the tablet without accidentally touching the screen or the hardware buttons), and the "leather-like" (which is nothing but an impudent lie) backpanel which in fact is made of extremely hard, slippery plastic), but got perfectly castrated by Samsungs malicious actions for locking down devices even more than Apple.
It's no keeper; sorry... :/
Regarding the 16/32 GB question:
Rooted Z2 (SD card write access enabled): 16 GB ok.
Non-rooted Z2: 32 GB mandatory.

Jupp, that plastic thingy made me cringe away from it the second I picked one up in the store.
I agree with the above, to bad you can't unlock the Sony without doing the bootloader altso, I'm kinda stuck in limbo with a non-rooted 16GB version and a hardly usable 64GB brand card :/

Yeah, you can move files to it true that, but fare as I can tell you cant access SMB shares true it, so you first have to dump it to your internal memory, then move it to the SD card from File Commander. Also, you can only move files and not application, limiting the SD cards immensely

I also wouldnt recommend this. I just sold my Note 2014 to buy the Z2 tablet. Its waiting for me at home, havent used it yet. The Note is laggy, heavy and awkward. Just my opinion.

So, you want to advice me to use a tablet you didnt use yourself, based on what?
The Note has its problems, and can be laggy, but after freezing many unnecesary start-up apps, it reacts much better.
And you call 630 grams heavy? Compared to my Surface Pro it weighs almost nothing.
And what is awkward about the Note 2014? Please explain what you mean with that.

Mate, that's just my opinion. Buy what ever you like. And yes, I ran clean ROM pretty much permanently, with a custom kernel - it was still very laggy. Buy it and enjoy

After having the Z2 tab for two days now, I stand by my original statement. This tablet kicks ass. So glad I sold the note for this.

About 5 hours and a little more using Sony's weak 1.5 A power adapter - via USB and charging port.
If you utilize a better power adapter (like Samsung's 2 A piece), charging time goes down to a little more than 4 hours if using the charging station (I wouldn't call this a "docking station" because it cannot do more than charging) DK39.

Well, that's not too bad, I can use my ipad charger when in rush of charging lol. So far, the most concern matter is touchscreen issues, if it not get fix soon by Sony, I guess I have to skip this one

I had a Note 4 and decided to give it to my sister and now wanting the S6 Edge. I had a 32gb note with a 64Gb card with about 38GB of music.
And Im now leaning towarda the 64gb model. Want to know peoples experience with their chosen storage. What did you choose and was it enough? Did you wish you went a step higher?
With the amount of data you had earlier, it's obvious that you need at least 64GB device. Don't forget that the S6 does not have expandable storage.
I had an LG G3 32GB with a 64GB card. It was a overkill for me, using less than 20GB of data on the card and a few more on the device. As for internal storage, for a 64GB unit, only about 55GB is available to you, so you gotta base your usage on that.

TBH I could survive with 32GB. But I got the 64GB. I got the Nexus6 in 64 for that reason. Well because I could!
My iphones are 128GB as well. Apple keeping 16 instead of 32 for the entry device is silly. Many will be frustrated when their (nearly full) devices cannot be updated to later iOS versions!
I probably would have got the 128GB S6 if it were available.
But I won't lose sleep over not having it.
OTG works fine for bulk transfers.
Air droid on our 5GHz AC network is plenty fast even for copying full roms and is it ever convenient!
I went for a 64gb. My old phone had 32gb and I was forever deleting stuff off it, I would have liked the 128 more but yeah at least I can now have a few games and more music.

32gb is enough for me, i actually store music on google music , you can upload your music to it using google music manager on PC , can have 50,000 and single file can be 300mb , of course you need data as it will stream, as im on unlimited don't have any issues and plays instantly , and when moving to another device can just log in its so quick, how things have progressed, i really dont have any use for sd cards now !:good:
I've only got a few albums (3 or 4) on my phone at the moment. I only get 1.5gb data so it's not enough to stream off the net, I would use it up to quickly. I have 15 games on here, some I'm only trying and deleting. I Still have 32gb free

I got the 64. I could possibly have settled for the 32gb, but i prefer not having to worry about it, and be able to install a ton of different games that i probably wont play. The problem with 32 is that it becomes 21 after the system, and in my case 10gb less after you synchronize spotify, leaving me with 11gb for games/apps/roms/backups etc.
So 64 is a nice middle point, i feel like it's only in a few unique cases that 128 would be necessary.
I also came from a 32gb note with a 64gb sd card.

When switching from my Note 4 to my S6 edge and trying to determine the capacity I needed, I just looked at the total combined storage of what I was currently using on my Note 4. I understood that some of those files were OS related files.
I didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of deleting files just to switch devices and I was close to the 64GB threshold, so I went with the 128GB. I'm glad I did.
I'm a heavy Cloud user, all my music is on Google, pictures are stored on MS OneDrive, etc. I had a 16GB iPhone 6+ and wasn't too limited. Picked up the 64gb just because it wasn't too much more and gave me plenty of space.

I don't mind using Google or Dropbox, but Microsoft OneDrive has the absolute worst upload rate of any online storage out there.
I tried uploading pictures to OneDrive several times and the upload speeds were painfully slow. After a quick Google search I realized it was a Microsoft issue that they refuse to fix. Microsoft keeps somewhat acknowledging it as an issue and releasing "how to" instructions tips in order to fool people into thinking they are helping, but they're not addressing the hardware issues related to the problem.
So much for that 2 years/100GB of space for free through OneDrive because I consider it pretty worthless.

That's pretty much the story of my life. Something is always right around the corner. Truth told, I'll probably buy the Note 5, but there's no guarantees. I'm pretty happy with the size of the S6 edge.
The other thing I considered when pondering space was the fact that things start running slower when you start running closer to capacity. I like to leave plenty of overhead for the sake of keeping it nice and smooth.

Sorry it isn't working for you, OneDrive has been gangbusters for me. I uploaded about half a gig and it didn't take that long at all. Sitting happily with my 1.12TB of storage and not planning on switching back any time soon.

I opted for the 64GB version, only because the 128GB one wasn't available here (Samsung decided not to release that model here)! I keep some of my work docs on my device and occasionally need to access them when I have zero signal so cloud storage isn't an option for me unless it's personal pics or music or other unimportant stuff. If I need extra storage on top of the 64GB I'll just get me an OTG flash drive, but so far I still have about 35GB free so I should be ok!

I have 26 gig of music, 104 apps, 13 gigs remaining on my 64. This is adequate for my needs, I've been on android for the start and have a consistent app package with the occasional new app coming on and an old app riding off into the sunset. You likely either know exactly how much you are using and whether that is on the move or not, if in doubt, get more. But then I'm a bit of a slut.
128GB. Version you can never have too much space. I use my phone every day and couldn't live with out it any more. When I'm that dependant on it why wouldn't I get the largest capacity?
Decided to take the 128gb myself. Didnt want to deal with storage problems...but crazzzy expensive here in europe.
64GB is plenty. Trying to sell the 128GB at a decent price will be harder once the Note 5 comes out as well, so went with the middle option.
I'm looking for either a 128gb or 256gb micro sd card and I want to have the same experience as using the internal storage for recording 4k/superslowmo and using apps on sd cards.
But I don't want to overspend either, I don't know up to what speeds/classes the phone can utilize.
There's cards like Samsung evo plus 128gb for 60euro, cards like lexar 1000x 128gb at 95 euro with UHS II Bus all kinds of things I got lost in the sea of classes and speeds.
What cards did you guys get and can anyone recommend me something?
I use sandisk ultra 200 gb and no problem @all with 4k
I got a samsung evo select 128gb and it is pretty damn snappy.

that was the fastest card available when I bought it, nothing was faster with high storage. I see 256gb cards now but haven't really looked into any or the specs
I got Samsung Evo+ 128 GB UHS-I U3 (100 MB/s read, 90 MB/s write) for 55 euros (just google MB-MC128GA/EU - NL Samsung site for this card) . There is also 128 GB Adata Premier One UHS-II with read 275 MB/s, write 155 MB/s for ~150 USD. 256 GB version is for 289 USD (amazon) - dunno why, but in Czech it is for ~210$ ^^. In your case, I would go for Samsung

I'd recommend the SanDisk Ultra 200 GB MicroSDXC UHS-I Memory Card as a good balance between capability, capacity and cost.

I purchased Sony 128GB UHS-I Class 10 SDXC Memory Card (SR-G1UY3A). Performance is simply awesome. It cost me Rs 5k.
I'm disappointed with XZP's sdcard access speeds, especially when the sdcard encryption is enabled. With my Samsung Evo+ 256Gb I got the following speeds:
About 7Mb/s read/write (with enabled encryption)
And about 70/40Mb/s (read/write) with disabled encryption.
What real speeds have you got?

Is this still a problem? I prefer to always have my stuff encrypted and had this same issue, so slow it's almost unusable. Wondering if any of the updates or anything have fixed this issue or not.

Yes, it's still a problem in Oreo. I have up to 10mb/s with enabled encryption.

Have you tried any other micro SDs or just the Samsung Evo+? I was thinking about getting the 2017 one, Samsung Evo Plus 256GB, but it seems like it will probably be the same, I think the only difference between that 2016 version is 10MB/s on Read speed. Would be interesting to see if certain cards do better than others, I would like to know if a A1 rated card also has this problem.
Hey guys. Thanks for all the helpful input. What would you say is the primary benefit of the additional storage of a 128GB to 256GB SD Card? I feel like on other phones without expandable memory, I never really reach capacity on 64GB models. So I probably used more cloud storage out of necessity and just got used to it. What are you guys using all this glorious storage for?

4k por... Oops I mean scientific ebooks etc.
All jokes aside... Having that bit of extra storage can give you the freedom to record, capture and download as you please!
Especially for people like me who hardly use online storage. I have the Samsung Evo Plus 256gb (2017 version) and I have so many 4k HDR10 movies and documentaries stored on it. I also dont have to worry about running out of space by constantly shooting 4k videos.
Having higher storage takes away all the limitations of having to transfer your files whenever you need to download new material.
I'm getting 72mb/read and 40mb/write even though the Micro SD card is capable of achieving higher speeds. This is due to the phone and I hope that android will find a way around this with upcoming updates, unless it's a hardware issue of course.
These speeds are more than enough for regular everyday use as I haven't faced any issues with reading/writing colossal files.

You had me at 4k por... LOL. But seriously, I have never even seen 4K video let alone shot in 4K, so I am looking forward to checking it out on this glorious screen. Still think I may only opt for 200GB unless I find a really good deal (I will check the model you listed above). Doubt I will be able to even fill that but who knows. LOL. Thanks again.

Yes that is correct. My internal storage is encrypted and the micro sd card isn't.
I have a toshiba sd card 128 bought on alyexprees for 42 euro its working beautiful even in 4k whit evo plus i have some problems in my other phones and 360 camera(also the 128 version.) and i had to give it to my wife she has an samsung phone and not really a heavy user. Even in speed toshiba has beeten samsung .
