Hi Experts,
Sorry if I sound a little crude and maybe a novice(I am), but I have been a Symbian user so far and finally decided to take the plunge to Android. I received my HTC Hero a couple of days back and tried to connect to Android Market with my google account, but in vain. Tried to use the Google Mail app, but again failed. Am I missing something here? Tried to use HTC Sync with my lappy, but no success.
Provider: Orange UK.
Connectivity: Wifi (No data plan on Sim)
Laptop OS: Win 7 64-bit (connecting usin USB cable)
I have read a lot of threads on xda and on the internet and tried quite a few things, but no success.
Thanks in advance,
Jag
Closing thread as there is another one though not for UK. Will wait for that to resolve.

I had the same problem, and some packet sniffing showed that Android tries to contact google on port 5228/tcp. Our work wifi firewalls non-standard ports, presumably this is why I cannot download from the market (Hangs forever at "starting download") or sign into gtalk over wifi. Switching to 3G data, everything works fine (though the Market stalls a lot).
I had an issue where it wouldn't accept my details unless I entered them in on the initial setup screen.
i.e. if I skipped past the "set up google mail" bit, and went back later, it didn't work.
workaround was reverting to factory install and making sure to enter my account details at the start (and I used wifi since I was in my home, so it should definately work)
It worked for me after i manually set the APN for my carrier.
Please same problem, HTC Magic 32B Ion 1.6, how can I do?
Yes you should always try to log into google at the very start otherwise some problems can be caused.

All OK!
I did a wipe and all ok
How am I supposed to do this after a factory reset if I connect thru wifi, since I must first enable wifi radio and then put a password, so that means I would have to skip the "wizard" so that defeats the purpose of factory resetting everything... please help.
Solved
Logically, what you say is right, but practically it actually worked
1) after the factory reset, i get the google signin screen,
at that moment, my wifi wont be enabled.....but still i went ahead and entered the username and
password and clicked the signin button
as expected it throwed a message saying "it cant connect"
along with it it also said may be you are not on wifi with a
"connect to wifi button", which will take to the wifi screen where you can connect to wifi and it comes back to the google signin screen, where you login again....
.............there you go it signs in successfully now.
Hope this helps
I have this same issue on my galaxy s. Even factory reset and singing in at the beginning doesnt help. What should i do?

Hi
I am facing the same problem with my device (Galaxy S2). I am able to surf web with the stock phone browser using wifi, but apps won't connect. Apps connect only through GPRS.
I was wondering if you were able to resolve the issue. Could you please help me ?
Anyone else has a solution to this problem.
My phone has the stock firmware, purchased the phone today.
Apps have never worked over wifi, but the browser works.
Cannot download anything on wifi, for that only my GPRS/3G works.
Please help
I have been using my desire for over a year and it has been great, but now I also have this problem of no market or google mail over my WiFi. I was going to do a factory reset and start again, but after reading the posts on this thread this may not resolve the problem.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem
I have this problem too. I doubt it's the manufacture deliberately use its stock sbf to stop people using wifi to save data bandage. So they can make more money with the mobile operators!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281034
me too I guess
well i was having a similar problem(would connect to wifi, the browser worked but not the apps).in my case, i have my router setup with the dhcp server off(you have to assign an static ip address manually to every device you that you are going to connect to the router) i solved my problem by enabling the "use static ip" check box and filling all the information(ip address, gateway, netmask, dns 1 and dns 2)on the advance settings tab in wifi settings.

I just solved my problem! Since I'm running a newly installed ROM, I wondered if my APN settings were correct (you would think so, since I could browse the net over data). Anyway, I went into the APN settings, and there were several 2Degrees APNs configured. I changed my default from "2degrees mobile" to "2degrees internet", and now Google Play works over data!
Having same problem.
Using Neatrom 3.5 on my S2.
In UK with Giffgaff.
Cant access Play store over 3G/HSPDA+ , But over WiFi its fine.
Tried all the tricks - clear cache, sign in out, reset time, reset phone and reinstalled ROM
If i access play store over WiFi first (then turn WiFi off), then i can at least continue to access/browse it over 3G/HSPDA+, but i can only make new purchases over WiFi and never over Cell data.
Something weird going on

To solve the problem one thing i did was to go to Google Services Framework and clear data, reboot, clear play store data reboot and it should work.
Managed to fix my problem.
I tried all the clearing data/caches, relogging in etc etc and none of that worked.
After reading onlyonejoefish post about his carriers APN settings, it got me thinking.
As i'm in the Uk with GiffGaff i was getting my APN settings from texting "settings" to "2020" and a configuration message came back with them in - and that is what i'd been using.
However i downloaded an app to delete all my phones APN's, then manually inputted my APN settings myself.
This solved my problem, i can now access the play store over cell data
Works with 3G but doesnt work on wifi
I get connection timed out on wifi but when I try with 3G it's working fine.
Using Gingerbread 2.3.6 with root.
Any ideas?

Finally solved the problem
i solved the problem of google in my android by downloading a app from this link below:
downloadhotportal.blogspot.com[/url]
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
Do this and then this, noting accounts.db has moved to /data/system/users/0/ on Android 4.2. Note: This removes all your accounts from Android not just your Google account, but having to re-add them is a small price to pay for a working Google Play.
After this happened again, I tried an alternative to removing accounts.db which worked well. I created another Google account then went to
menu => Accounts
In Google Play and added my new Google account. Then I switched back to the original account. To clean up I went to
Settings app => Accounts => Google
Selected the new account then selected "Remove account" from the menu button.
I've tried several Jellybean builds (CheckROM, Wanamlite, Omega) and have the same problem with all of them. Whenever I turn off 3G data it re-enables itself within a few minutes. Has anyone else had this problem with JB?
Most likely it is a problem with some of the installed by you soft wghich tires to connect to network.

What's the best of identifying which app might be causing it??
If your phone is rooted, it is simple: install DroidWall from market
I'm running Omega v31 since Indie released it. No problem so far.. Same when I was on CheckROM before.
Did you do a full wipe before installing the ROMs?

Yes I did a wipe/delete cache/delete Dalvik cache before installing each ROM.
I installed Droidwall and denied 3G access to ALL apps, but still something is switching on my data service within an hour of me disabling it.
???
I never met the app which turned firewall of by itself....
Last resort: install Titanium Backup, and by freezing one by one check which one causes this.
Must it be an app that's trying to access 3G, or is the o/s enabling 3G for some reason??
If you have set software check, it may, but I doubt it.
From system apps - I'd look into news daemon, stock daemon, account sync, weather update and similar.
Surely the question isn't which app is attempting to use 3G, but why it is able to turn 3G on when I've explicitly disabled it? If I turn 3G off should it prevent any app from using it??
Usually no, BUT:
- some apps can have root access;
- some apps can have "strange" permissions, especially if taken from... not 100% trustworthy source.
One more what can help to diagnose: Permissions Denied from Play, can verify app-by-app which one will have permission to access network.
Personally, what I'd do:
- install Titanium Backup;
- backup all apps;
- freeze system apps (Stock Daemon, news daemon, FB, YT, SamsungUNA, push etc)
- look if the situation persists, if not - I'd try to unfreeze sys apps one by one, and then restore my apps.
I'm using Onavo Count to monitor for data usage and it's showing that only "Google Services" and "Google Account Manager" have used any data since the last reboot. Since both of those are pretty central to the Android experience I'm now stumped. I can't disable them, but why/how are they overriding my settings and starting up 3G when I've explicitly chosen to disable it??
Hmmm... by the accident - do you have auto sync left in the settings?

Sync is switched on for Gmail only, but even this shouldn't be able to enable 3G when I've turned off 3G???
Same problem...
I have the same problem, since I updated to jellybean - the mobile data just switches itself back on even though I have manually disabled it.
I have the stock software, sorry, haven't had the guts to flash it yet
Anybody find an answer?
Thanks in advance

Have you checked in Settings>Data Usage>Mobile Data was unchecked after switch off the mobile data from notification? It could be either that or auto sync that force mobile data to switch on. Try to turn off mobile data and turn on auto sync, then see in an hour if there's any effect.
Because if stock (non-rooted) also have same problem, it should be something in the settings..
Anyway, mine doesn't have any problem like this..
try this
u may try this ....like press *#*#4636#*#* and the goto phone information the select the type of network u want..
btw this works for many of the devices....on any version of android
Hi all,
Anyone familiar with google Android wifi settings. I used to have a nexus one where I saved all my wifi passwords for the wireless router at work, home etc. When I got a Samsung tablet with android these settings were automatically remembered and I didnt have to put in the passwords for all my routers on my tablet. It did the same for my s3 however since a hard reset of the s3 I find I now always have to enter wifi passwords which it should remember because my other devices already stored their information. I tried backup and restore settings in the s3 with no luck.
Cheers

Usually, if you allow Google to do it, it will back them up online (somewhere). Once you add your account, e.g. after a hard reset, it will update your device, at least that is how it works for me and I do regular mega wipes.

I own a desire x which is unrooted, and have been using it for around a year. Recently, Google play has stopped working with MY WiFi only . It keeps on loading showing the circular sign and nothing appears ... However , it works on any other WiFi network or even when I use mobile data ..... I have researched a lot and tried pretty much everything except a factory reset .. any suggestions? I read on some other forum that even a reset didn't fix the problem :/ Please help
If it happens only with your wifi, tell us how is your setup? Which type of wifi router, which security options and so on. Maybe there is something wrong there. Also, have you tried reconfiguring your wifi or even resetting your wifi router?

Then, as @GtrCraft said, try a factory reset of your phone (backup important data first!)

Found the SOLUTION!
What I did was that I changed my DnS of my WiFi network on my phone to 8.8.8.8(which is the Google dns) and it works!!!!thanks for your responses anyway !!!
Ok, so there exists some kind of DNS block in your WiFi network, strange. But if you don't want to use Google DNS, you can also try OpenDNS (IPs are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220)
