Only 2GB of space. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi! I've got an i717 16GB, and according to my settings, I only have 2GB of space on the total system. I plug it in, and it says I have 10GB available and 5.8GB used. What's going on? I have CWM 5.5

OPPS sorry about that dead link.....
This link is working today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHsHiXDgSy4
I put the whole URL this time to copy and paste.
I use the FREE EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition to partition the sd card. I find it easier to and faster to back up the contents of sd card to computer than partition. and than transfer bkup to sd card on the 1st Primary Fat32 partition.
Takes to long to transfer 4 to 6 GB back from bkup to card from pc to phone IMO.
OR
Here is a step by step .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nllIEBzuPHo I prefer the 4000MB partition for the NU storage.
Be sure to set or make BOTH the partitions "Primary" partitions or they will not work with Link2sd.
I tried Mini tool and Aparted but they might work for others, they didn't work for me.
Link2sd card is the most reliable and easy to do the linking from old tiny internal storage to the NEW enlarged external storage that I have found.
And if that app does not do it for anyone try foldermount https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATWTghTploY
OR
HERE at xda .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39178981 Give a BIG thanks and support to madmack
And get that apk from madmack at bottom first post.
And if you do NOT have ROOT than try. . .

So, basically your solution is based on using additional SD card not changing/modifying the phones' EMMC memory.
I think I had tried Link2SD/Folder mount earlier and not all apps supports with this method.
It is still helpful but I think we(other users) still like to change the EMMC side.
But I still want to tried your suggested method to try. Thank you!!!

[Q] How do I unpartition my SD card?

Hello Everyone!
I partitioned my SD card back when I had my Nexus One. Now, I'm interested in reversing that process. I just recently rooted, unlocked, and flashed my phone. Unfortunately, CWM doesn't offer an option to partition my SD card. How does one do that these days? I just want my SD card to be unpartitioned.
Thanks
Chump
You should be able to format the sd card form the phone itself, like going to menu, settings, storage, dismount sd card then format sd card, I think this removes partitions, also destroying all data in the card.

Backup sdcard contents to computer. On computer delete all partitions, then you will have one big unallocated space. Create a new partition using all available space. Copy backed up data back onto sdcard. Put back in phone.

+1 as the standard windows partition tool does not delete the 2nd partition. You will lose everything on the 2nd partition as even with mini tool you can't access it, only delete it and format it.
Oh, exactly.. make sure to back up any important data.

Thanks guys for the above info, my next question is whats the best way to put "update.zip" file on to pnone SD card after downloading on to PC:
Is it best to:
Copy and paste file from PC to SD card with phone attached to PC using USB cable.
or
Move file to SD card using same set up as above.
or
Use a SD card adaptor fitted to PC USB and move or copy file to phone SD card fitted to adaptor.
Sorry for the above silly questions.

Sorry for last silly questions, this is what I have done so far.
Fitted cable from phone to PC USB
SD files seen ok on pc, moved "update.zip" file from PC to phone SD card and disconnected phone from PC.
Powered up phone using: volume+home+power buttons.
Used volume up/down to select .zip file pressed home to install.
Rebooted phone and checked for "superuser icon" it was there so looks like my phone is rooted.
Downloaded and installed on phone "Link2SD" and it worked ok I could open all options, but still to partition my SD card, thats my next task.
I have downloaded "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition v7.6" and installed on my PC ready to partition my SD card I have read a few posts here and other web sites to try and understand what format is best for my Phones SD card.
What is the best format to use: ext2 or ext3 ??
What is the best way to backup/reinstall apps that are on my SD card at the moment ??

This is where I get a wee bit confused regarding formating you suggested ext3 but when you read the information for link2sd it says to format both partitions as FAT32 they say that ext2/ext3 may not work on all phones but FAT32 works on all, have I read this correctly ?
I downloaded "Titanium app" free edition and installed on my phone it runs fine after install but can you use this app to backup apps thats on the SD card to PC ?
At the moment I can't see an option to do this, have I missed somthing?

1. Detecting ext3/4 depends on your kernel. But even if you are on stock 5830i firmware & kernel, link2sd will detect sd-ext even if it is ext2 format. If you are on Rafael Kernel, you can format sd-ext on ext3 or ext4. I recommended ext3, coz most people do that, and so far ext3 is reported to perform best without stressing much life out of your SD Card. I haven't ever tried formating sd-ext in fat32 or heard of someone doing that. So can't say if Fat32 is better than the ext file system or the other way around
2. You'll have to manually copy the backup you made in the "sdcard/titaniumbackup" folder in your SD card to Your PC. Whenever you want to restore that backup, simply put it back in same directory in SD card and run titanium restore process

You are welcome and good luck with ur plans ... One little correction in your post. As i explained earlier that default kernel will only recognize ext2. so format sd-ext in ext2 format to get it detected in link2sd on default firmware. ext3/ext4 is only detectable in custom kernel

Must have misunderstood, I shall use ext2 to format sd-ext.
I may not bother just now doing a backup of old 2gb SD card because the apps I have on there I can re-download when I have set up the new card so I may just delete these apps to get them of the system and start fresh, there not important apps anyway.
Sorry but I meant to ask what would be the best sizes for each partition when I format the 16gb SD card ?
Let me know what you think.

Yes saeed14i Understand what your saying but having 10gb or so on first partition will be ok in my situation as I will only be using for pictures etc and I am one of these guys that uploads pics to PC and does a clean up on a regular basis.
So this is how it stands now, Backed up my apps on the old SD card using "Wondershare MobileGo for Android" ready to reinstall on to 2nd partition of new SD card, formated and created partitions on new SD card using "MiniTool Partition Wizard home edition", I then used "Link2sd" to link apps that were on internal storage, reinstalled backed up apps using "Wondershare" they went straight to internal storage but linked to 2nd partition with no problems.
Note/ I did not link any system apps.
Was a bit confused at first when trying to link apps to 2nd partition as when you open an app in Link2sd it shows a window with info of app and some buttons and I thought you had to use the "move to SD card" but I realised you only use the "create link button", silly me.
As I said above I used "Wondershare MobileGo for Android" to do backup and found it worked well I liked the fact that you dont require your USB cable to attach your phone to PC you can use WiFi and that is what I used and it worked great.
Phone Internal storage before starting was 3.5mb free
After doing all of the above my internal storage is now 118mb free (well worth doing)
I will try and post some pictures at a later date once I get them sortd out.
The whole process of rooting, creating 2nd partition, backing up apps and linking apps to 2nd partition has went well, a big thanks to you saeed14i and other members who posted on this thread. I was very aprehensive before I satarted but being on xda has helped a lot.

In detail > do u mean what programs i tried to use? if it is apps are (a2sp pro - link2sd - app2sd -gl to sd - and much more programs )
i just can not move apps or games to my external sd card
when i used (app2sd) program it gives me this msg : the device does not have a real primary external storage or the primary external storage is emulated .
My device is (samsung galaxy S3 - odin rooted )
any solution? thx in advance
I think your /sdcard is internal memory. The /mnt/extsdcard is external memory. If you removed your external sdcard do all your files and stuff disappear or are they still there?
If you are rooted I think you can change where everything gets mounted or maybe change it in your boot.img.
Also, it's not for nothing. Consider this an educational journey into the rich world of rooted phones.

First thx and about stuff disappear , no i can still see them whenever i use usb cable or any
its my first android so am new to expressions (your boot.img)
its ok just wanted to have more memory cuz my empty memory is 700 mb :S right now
and am using the factory rom ( maybe i have to setup rom so it can work?)
about education am afraid to educate on my s3 maybe i have to buy a cheap one until i learn how to use
thx again bro
Since you are rooted you can install a custom rom that has no bloatware. You'll get more space because it will only have the apps that you want

[Q] Rooting Question

Hello! I'm new to this website and new to rooting tablets. I want to root my Nook tablet, I have model no.BNTV250. I was wondering if this was possible, and what would be the best way to go about it. I've been looking all over the internet but I can't seem to find an explanation. This site seems to be the best I've seem to answering my question. If there is a thread here for rooting it, please point in the right direction. I do apologize if i posted this in the wrong section! Thanks!

Welcome.
You have a few options.
You can continue to run the internal (eMMC) stock B&N ROM with modifications like root. Running a small tablet like this is considered by many to be less than ideal. The interface is clunky.
You can replace the internal (eMMC) stock B&N ROM with a full, rooted version of android. What you get is an experience much like many tablets available (Nexus 7), with the main difference that many of those other tablets also have cameras and bluetooth, and the Nook Tablet doesn't.
You can create a bootable microSD card with a full, rooted version of android. If you have a spare microSD card kicking around, this gives you the option of trying the full android experience without actually modifying anything on the internal eMMC storage. Take out the microSD card, reboot, and you're back to stock. Put the microSD card in again whenever you want. Put in another microSD card with a different android ROM. Swap back and forth whenever you want. For this option, I think the smallest card you can use is a 2GB, but I could be wrong on that.
Decide which option you want and then we can discuss it further.

Thanks for the response!
I'd like to go with option 3. I followed a video I found on youtube that had the links to everything I needed, but then I realized it was actually for the the color reader and not for the BNTV250, which is what I have. I was hoping there was an option for the SD card Android method like the other model. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, and thanks again for the help and getting back to me.

Good luck!

This would have worked (the second paragraph method) but I do not understand all this formatting different partitions thing. I guess you have to do it, because the image file (IMG) I downloaded won't fit on my 2GB SD card. Maybe I need a bigger card? Or do I HAVE to do the partitions?
EDIT: I did the partition method exactly as described in the instructions and it's still telling me I don't have enough enough space on my SD card. I don't understand why it keeps telling me this, because he said a few times you can use a 2GB card?
I can help... Let's start with identifying what OS your pc has and going over which instructions you performed.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on my PC, and I followed these instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36685310&postcount=1
I was following the second paragraph method (using the write image to SD card method)
My card was too small though. I need 1.87 GB and my card was only 1.86. I have a 4GB card handy so I'm going to try that out. I'm just wandering if I have to do the different partitions on the card or not, I already did it once but the image was too big for the card. I'm just not sure if I'm just using the write image option if i have to use the partition method. Either way it doesn't matter, since I do understand how to do it now. Thanks again!
The second paragraph links to instructions you that don't require you to make partitions. You need to be more specific about which steps you did.

I got it to work! My SD card just wasn't big enough. Thanks everyone for your help!
Does anyone know if there's a way to add APK files? I put them on the SD card but the APK Installer I have only goes into the android folders. Thanks again for all of the help, I really appreciate it!
I think you can just click on it from within your file explorer and it will prompt to install it.

I figured it out actually. The last thing I'm trying to figure out is how to expand the memory for installing apps. I'm using a 4GB SD card, but there's almost 2gb (like 1.86GB) left on the card not being used for anything. I'm trying to figure out how I can make use of that for more storage for apps. I'm looking up and down the instructions, and he said you can expand the memory, but it doesn't say how.

PLEASE HELP!! How do you install a large app/game on the SD card on kit kat? lg optim

I have the LG L70 running KitKat and. So I got 750mb free storage space, and while I can move an app to the SD card after install, incl. the main app of gangstar vegas, but when I run it and it tries to download the 3gb data package, it obviously says not enough space on the device internal storage. Which is true, but I have the SD card inside, how do I get the phone to download the data there? im rooted aswell if that helps is there an app that can make the phone think my external memory is my internal memory? thanks in advance

Link2sd plus will do that for you. It has an option of placing the application and/or its data on the sd. It's a paid app, but only $2 - well worth it imo.
thanks ill check it out and get back to you
its not working for me are sure it will allow me to download the additional 3gbs to the EXTERNAL sd card? instead of the internal storage wich has only 700mb's? thanks for your suggestion though this is really stomping me

OK, I should have been clearer. This is more complex than what I first described. In order to use Link2SD plus optimally, you will need to perform a few steps. You can find the reasoning behind them in the Link2SD FAQ (although a bit outdated). Here are the steps you should perform:
1. Backup your SD. This is a means of precaution only.
2. Reformat your SD drive to add a second ext3/ext4 partition (no need to wipe the data or anything like that). Its size should be about 10% of the total SD size. You can do it with MiniTool Partition Wizard. Make sure that the new partition is primary and not logical.
3. Reinstall Link2SD plus in order for it to recognize the new SD layout. May need to reboot here.
4. From Link2SD plus, choose your game. Tick all Link options, especially the link data option.
This will fool the game to think that its data is located on the internal storage, but it's really on the SD. In this case, the 3GB data should now be downloaded to SD.

@TheRealAlware - why don't you try PiggyFlooper's modules. I didn't know any of them, and it seems that the first one may suit your needs.
If they don't help you, I can give you a step by step guide on how to use Link2SD plus. Do you have an SD reader? If so, some of the steps can be easier.

LOL yeah. Although I'm a big android fan, this specific issue (the whole dealing with external SD that is) is a weak spot which android keeps failing to address throughout its releases. I know where it's coming from (basef on linux) but it's still something that should have gotten a proper creative solution by now.
I have L7 II and I used FolderMount on obb of games like FIFA 14 and it worked fine, you should try it

No problem mate. It's best for you to try all the methods posted here by other people before trying Link2SD plus. If they work, it'll save you much hassle. I've tried to think of a guide for you, and it figured to me that the only way for it to work is if you either get an SD card reader or alternatively another device that allows you to mount the SD in a USB MSC (mass storage class) mode, as AFAIK LG stock devices only allow MTP mode, something that won't allow you to format a partition using your PC.

i dont think that's for me piggies module i mean it's not saying anything about downloading the additional app data onto the sd card its just gonna let me move the obbs to the sd card i've been thinking maybe its best if instead of looking for a way to download the additional data to the sd card perhaps i should just look into how to make my phone think the sd card is the internal and the internal is the external that would solve all my problems and way to do that? and again sorry for my tardiness work has kept me busy lol

What you said is exactly what link2sd plus does. Alas, a part of the sd should be formatted to ext3 for this purpose.
Do you happen to have CWM installed?

Yes, CWM is Clockwork Mod - Android's recovery program. Reason I asked is that it has a built-in ability to partition your SD, something that'll ease things up.
And don't feel bad about not partitioning theSD - this shouldn't be done in the vast majority of the cases, only in when you wanna use apps like Link2SD or others that need to push Android to the limit...
ok ill look into that today and get back at you also is it possible to sideload an app directly on to your external sd? could that work and let me side step alot of trouble thanks

I guess it's possible, but I don't know how to do it...
Regarding Link2SD plus guide, you'll need one of the following two:
1. CWM on your device
2. A card reader, or another phone that allows you to mount the SD as MSC (like Disk On Key - in windows it'll show as an additional drive)

yeah i dont have a card reader and i dont know anybody that has one neither i wish i would did more research before i made the leap from ios to android i thought android was more accessible open and easier to deal with i assumed that since you had an sd card slot having a ton of internal space wasn't critical like it is on ios because you could buy memory i had no clue how wrong i was and since i got this phone and ive noticed something odd gl to sd seems to be doing what i want but only for on app assassins creed black flags companion app runs fine when i use gl to sd the additional data downloaded on my external sd and when i try to run the app without gl to sd it tries to download the additional files on my internal sd are you familiar with that app and how to get it to work with other apps like gangstar vegas? thanks man for your and everybody eles help
