[Q] Is it a good deal? - HTC Desire 601

Hi guys, I like the design of the phone and I want to buy one (Single SIM version) for a girl. All I want to do with it is to make calls, send texts (SMS and WhatsApp) and taking pictures (with both cameras), but I have a few questions:
1) How long will last the battery without Mobile Data activated, only Wi-Fi (for 1 - 2 hours/day) and calling for 4 - 5 hours/day? [on Android 4.2.2 and Android 4.3, I would like to see infos for both firmwares ]
2) How many MB of RAM are available for user from that Gigabyte?
3) Is the VGA camera good enough for selfies? And what about effects, I want to say about Normal, Aqua Country etc. are available to front camera?
4) Is the firmware from 4.2.2 a buggy one? What about 4.3? I've heard about some problems with battery life, sound, Wi-Fi on KitKat and I don't want to met one of them on JB.
Thank you in advance, guys.
Sorry for my bad English.

1) About a day or so, most of the time I play games and browse the net, fb etc.
2) 300-400MB, total accessible memory is ~800MB
3) The quality is not the best, but the photos are pretty decent
4) Kitkat is more laggy than jellybean. About the issues, battery life and sound are only after upgrade and it is fixable by pulling out the battery for ~5 min and then turning it back on.
PS: I'm on kitkat

Can I apply effects when I want to make pictures with the frontal camera?

Yes, you can.

Be careful if you upgrade the phone to 4.4.2
Many users (myself included) have had severe battery drain issues with it.

1) I have mobile data activated, as well as Wi-Fi though I do not call that much. My battery lasts a full day, as long as I turn off Google Now (which drains your battery really quickly).
2) Answered by Partik.KT
3) The effects are available, there are also more effects if you update to KitKat so that could be a reason for upgrading. One problem is that the front camera needs quite a lot of light. In the evening, most of the time you can't see anything when using it.
4) The firmware from 4.2.2 is very stable, I'm using InsertCoin at the moment (Sense 6, KK 4.4.2) which has for me been very stable as well. The only problems I had was that I wasn't able to install another kernel, but if you're not planning on doing that, I can really advise updating to 4.4.2. No sound problems here, just the battery life but that was mainly because of Google Now. Sense 6 does have an extreme power saving mode which works pretty well.
If you have any more questions, please ask!

[Q] Planning on getting this device, a few questions, can you answer them?

1. How is the battery life, seeing that it's a quad core device?
2. How is the camera in real life use?
3. Call quality?
4. The notification light is on the side, by the power button, or within it I believe. Is the light easy to see, is it bright?
5. How does the stock 4.1.1 run? Are there any Roms, that are better? Does CM10 work with it?
Thank for answering my questions!
EDIT: Thanks for all the answers, definitely getting this phone!!

1) My battery life is great. Somehow better than my Galaxy S3. I leave my phone off the charger for the night and I lose between 0-2% after 8 hours. Deep sleep was always a problem with my S3. Not this one though. I'm running a live wallpaper, using all 4 cores, and constantly using my phone. No problems whatsoever.
2) Kinda crappy imo
3) It's loud enough. I'm not fond of the speaker though when it comes to playing music. Nocturnal's ROM fixes this with xLoud
4) Yeah it's easy to see. No complaints from me
5) That is a typo at the top of this page. It comes shipped with 4.0.4 and it isn't upgradable to JB as of the moment. However, there are two JB ROMs (4.1.2) currently available for flashing that are great. Also, there is a possibility of turning this phone into a Nexus 4 in which you can flash any of their ROMs, get their updates, apparently get Ubuntu, etc... Check the development forum here for more info.
It's a good phone. You won't regret it.

1. Great, as long as you set it up right (i.e. Disable fast dormancy, among other things, and before you ask, Google is your friend).
2. Not great, not terrible.
3. Very good, in my experience.
4. It's easy to see if it's not in a case that covers it. It blinks too slowly and is only red. There are apps and tweaks that can fix the blink rate.
5. ICS runs as well on this phone as Jelly Bean does on most other phones due to the sheer brute force of the LGOG's hardware. There is a stock JB ROM that runs great in the Development sub forum (SnowJB v1.1) as well as a few stock based ICS ROMs that run great too. There are no CM ports as of yet, but should be soon.

1. This is my first Android, but it's getting pretty good battery life now that I've figured out how my usage affects it. I'm by all accounts a heavy user of the thing (grandfathered into unlimited LTE so I'm going to make the most of it :silly: )
2. I honestly don't use the camera that much, but it's good enough, especially with the mod in the development subforum.
3. Mine has a strange buzzing in the earpiece that gets annoying, but I can generally hear just fine. For the most part I am heard just fine as well, but occasionally I have to shout into the phone. Haven't tried a bluetooth yet, but I will as soon as I can find it
4. My case covers the light, which is annoying on one level, but it doesn't matter to me as much as having a case on this thing!
5. It comes with 4.0.4 ICS, but as my signature will tell you it runs like a dream on it. I'm actually rocking one of our 4.1.2 ROMs (not sure which anymore as the numbering has gotten really confusing in that thread...) and aside from random FCs that have cropped up in recent days it works great as well. Supposedly we're getting AOSP/CM10 pretty soon, otherwise there are a bunch of stock-based ROMs that have different features as well.

1. Battery life is amazing considering it IS a quad core device. I actually get better life on this than I did with my tweaked out skyrocket.
2. I'm not too knowledgeable about the camera end of the phone spectrum but I think it could be better; no huge complaints though.
3. No problems with call quality
4. I think the led is a personal preference thing. When you don't have a case on you can definitely see it, flash interval is annoying as previously mentioned but you can change it with various 3rd party apps. However..why the hell they would put it on the power button is beyond me.
5. Stock was actually great. I kept it for a month before flashing lol. Roms are also great, we've got a lot of amazing and talented devs putting work into this phone. Cm is probably coming soon, no reason for it not to be as far as I can tell

Xiaomi Mi3 16GB Snapdragon (WCDMA)

Hello,
I dont know if my topic fits here in the category (General)
But i have a fuw questions about my new smartphone (Xiaomi Mi3 WCDMA version)
Because i have always used a Google phone (android) MIU5 is a hole diffrent OS.
So my question is there a possible way to install Google Play, and that is very stable on it?
Because i know xda-board is a very advanced board if it is something about phones, so if somebody can help me out here.???
------------
My Xiaomi Mi-3 Review.
New phone:
Since Xiaomi had released the Mi-3, there was an outbreak.
With the specifications and the low price Xiaomi had set an smartphone that is not only in China so populair but abroad the country to.
And you can see it with sales they made everytime the new stock was out.
In serval minutes there was a bunch of them sold out. The biggest one was more than 100.000 units in less than 90 seconds. You can see how populair the phone was. Because the new version with the latest highly clocked Snapdragon800 in it. Xiaomi set up an new variaty of people to there market.
Xiaomi is still out of stock in the most versions, and will be for a fuw moths.
Design:
The design of the Xiaomi Mi-3 is one of the most beuutifull phones ever made. The roundings the buttons the ultra-thin magnesium alluminum alloy gives the phone a very nice look. The roughness of the phone with his big 5 inch screens feels so nice in your hands. You dont have trouble with using one hand (only if you have big hands)
Hardware:
Xiaomi haves two versions of the Mi-3. The tegra4 TD-SCDMA only can be used in China, and the Snapdragon WCDMA an European/American/others parts of the world. Both CPU’s are diffrent clocked. the Tegra4 is clocked to max with 1.8Ghz, and the Snapdragon800 is clocked 2.3Ghz. The driffrence in the speed of the phone is actualy the same. Both versions are smooth tasking. There is no lag or something bothering you. With his 2GB on both version you are for now a happy guy. You can play the latest games on your phone as you want. With the new amazing LG Full-HD resolution IPS screen it makes the so beuatifull. The colors of the phone pop out. The angles on the screen are nice, somebody next to you will not having trouble to not see the screen.
Software:
Mi-3 is running on two diffrent android version. The tegra4 runs at an 4.2.3 android. And Snapdragon800 runs on an 4.3 newer version of the android. When you recieve your phone you can choose if you want to use it in chinese or English. If you choose english you still will see some chinese signs at the screen. This is one thing that the developers dont have chainged. But i cant hurt. You will not recieve Google App store on it, you must download it by your self. Xiaomi is very smart if you wanna use Google services, you must have an Xiaomi account, and trough the account you can download google installer. And from there you can use any google app you want.
Yes, it is possible!

I don't know if this is the right category for you question, but I'm not a moderator so I don't need to know that actually.
What I know on the other hand is that you can easily install Google Apps (GApps) on your Xiaomi Mi3. You won't need any experience with flashing gapps from internal storage or SD-card, it is easy as pie!
Once you have your phone open the MIUI Store and search for "Google". The developer Eric Xiang has put together an excellent Google Installer app. The name is in Chinese, but just search for it in English and you will find it. The installer will take care of everything else.
If that doesn't work, you should try rooting your device and flashing Gapps manually.
thank you in advance.
The GAPP store is in english right? Not chinese.
Hope i will can fix it. Uhm are there customroms made for the XIAOMI or not? So i can try that to if it doesent work for me...

and yet another one by a friend of mine:
I have the phone for about 3/4 days right now.
And the MIUIV5 launcher, if you using it for the first time. Its a little bit strange.
But after using it for a while, you learn fast and see how powerfull the launcher is.
The 1ste you always do is install gapps on your phone.
I Had to make some questions an supported boards, to get it work. But now i am pleased with the usage of the phone and the powerfull hardware whats in it.
Love the phone for now, will definitly stay at the MIUI community.
One thing: i hope they can fix an Android Stock 4.4 Kitkat OS with multi-lang....
I dont know why Cynogenmod doesent come for Xiaomi Mi-3, or other custom roms for it.
XDA-developers are the moest anticipated people for smartphones, i hope they will be release an Xiaomi mi-3 miuiV5 or later v6 CUSTOM ROM OR SOMETHING.
i tough there will be alot of them because it is Androind but nothing
A nice review. I have a great apetytna this smartphone. Are you able to compare its screen with LG G2 or HTC One? I wonder if it is comparable to, or better or worse.

My issues are:

2. Ram is filling quikly <- not solved
3. Google account had some problems (was my fault because did not install google contacts.apk) <- solved
If these things are solved, than you have an bad-ass phone..

I'm using the latest MIUI version: 4.1.24 in Polish and I have no problems from the department in both the 3 and 2G. Everything in my MI 3 WCDMA works perfectly.
I have the CDMA version with miuiV5. It works great. No problems encountered. I just wish I knew how to make a custom ROM. I have a developer rom and the V5 rom. Tried both and they both work fantastic.
Maybe you know how to turn off the meter data. After exceeding the set limit further changes cause complications itelefon off my data transmission. I do not need to set this limit, I enclosed it with curiosity, and I have no problem.

In my opinion the mi3 offers the best hardware on the whole market to a fantastic price. I can't understand why there are no developers for roms like AOKP or CM or AOSP.

It is not. Perhaps it's successor - the rumoured MI3S - might have this feature.
Btw. I have a 64GB Mi3 and so far I am very happy with this phone; even without LTE-support.
I am very happy with my phone. It is a 64GB Grey Mi3. The 3G on AT&T is fine but slow.
The Data speeds are not that fast but it gets the job done. I get some time out errors from time to time.
I like to be able to get the Temp that displays on the lock screen and home screen(default) to display current location instead of in China. Can't seem to get the default Maps app to work in the US even with it locking in on GPS it displays China. Google Maps works fine but a little show and sometimes has defaulted back to a Chinese location first until a signal lock happens and then it will find my current location.
Starbucks app doesn't work on my phone.
When I click on an autocorrected word that has a red underline on it the app will crash and send me back to home. Bug has been reported.
When saving pictures from the internet it doesn't default to a standard folder. It uses the cloud folder and even with sync to cloud off I have to move it to the main local folder to get the pictures available to send or attach to email.
Speedtest.net doesn't connect to show download speeds. It will show a slow upload speed.
Visual VoiceMail doesn't seem to work on AT&T's network. If I give them my old HTC One IEMI number the visual voicemail works but the DATA does not. I can live with it for now.
Anyone got the Visual Voicemail to work with connecting Data on AT&T? If so what phone did they put in the system to make it work? the HTC One does not work. Confirmed this twice.
If they release an LTE version that would work with AT&T here that would be killer!!! I really do like the phone. The size, the weight, the shape. I would love to see this one in White or Silver 64GB.

There will be very soon, devices squad on snapdragon 800 SoC : xperia z1, zr (?), LG G2, Note 3 and more ... mean we can start poke their code to used as "base" to start write device tree on cm / aosp/ aokp. I have also very limited skill to write android code ... let us learn together. Mine on stock MIUIv5 and I satisfy with the phone performance. Miui serve what we need for basic computed including archiving/extracting files. It's handy i did not need to carry my laptop anymore when travelling

Im considering buying Moto E 2nd Gen LTE. Is it worth it?

Hi. I currently own Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 for more than a year and I thought its good time to change phone. As you can see, Im a person who buys budget phones. I was searching for my next budget phone and Motorola Moto E LTE got my attention. I couldnt find a better deal than this, so I thought before making a final decision I will ask some opinions from people who got this phone. So, what do you think of Moto E and can you recommend it? What are biggest disadvantages and hows the performance? I already know that lack of flashlight is big hit for me.
Well it's a hard question. On stock 5.0.2 (there is still no update in eu) performance is preatty bad. Sometimes it runs smooth but there are cases when it lags horrible. I don't know who even installed chrome on this phone: it is cleary unusable however I instaled lighting browser and it works fine.
I've bought this phone because I tought that it will be my first smartphone which will be runing fine out of the box without modifications and I'm disapionted now :/ There is update in US and it probably fixes some of performance issues but when it will be available in eu? We still don't know.
Of course there is some good things like:
- of course price
- build quality
- very fast gps
- decent screen for it's price
- great battery life (up to 7h of screen on time)
- almost clean android
- decent speaker
- sd card slot and enabled android's app to sd
- up to date cpu (bigger chance that it will get android m)
- lte
- big data partion (we get 5gb out of 8gb so I think that's good)
- good light sensor
- and I very like it's look (but it's my own preference)
and what is bad now:
- performance on 5.0.2
- there is no e-compas! (my xperia x8 had compas in 2010)
- no notification led (this is very annoying since moto display is too sensitive and ambient display works randomly)
- fornt camera (back one is decent but sometimes it can't focus well)
- lack of camera flash
- updates aren't so fast (at least in eu)
- miracast isn't working (because of only 2,4 ghz wifi)
- moto features aren't working well on 5.0.2, for exaple twist to turn on camera isn't working properly (after twist I feel the vibration but screen isn't turning on)
So would I buy it again?? I don't know, it's performance is really discapointing right now. I compared it to moto g on 4.4.4 (which should be slower because of 720p screen and slower cpu) and it was like day and night. G was way faster.
Thats a bummer. I thought it was very good for basic usage like messages and browser. I heard Android 5.0 had memory leaks, but from what youre saying performance is really bad here. Is it fixed in 5.1?
well for basic usage it can make a job, I discabled all moto services that you can discable in settings, installed nova launcher, lighting browser and it's somehow working. When it starts lags I clean my recent apps and it helps.
The phone is preatty good but it was relased in bad time, in days of probably the worst android relase, lollipop looks cool but it can't be as fast as kitkat :/
howerer when I compared it to my other firend's moto g on stock 5.0.2 they were running simmilar and he told me that he hasn't got issues with it (but he often clear recent apps so maybe thats the reason)
I belive that 5.1.1 will fix all the issues, we have to wait.
I would appreciate other people opinions.
just too good a phone at this price

when i purchased it i dint have much expectations considering its cheap.but then as i am using it for over 2 months now ,i dont feel it as a cheap phone.it never hanged on me..not even once.though i have disabled quite a lot of stuff but thats fine...this is first phone i am running without rooting in last 5 years.and surprisingly i am not feeling need to .My battery lasts beyond 3 days and it runs fast enuf in comparison to my past phones which i had to root to make them usable(samsung s3 , s advance etc)
i wud say go fr it..5.1 update is sure to improve it further
When I first bought my moto e (xt1526) a few months back, at first it sucked. I wanted my ZTE max back. Everything was laggy. Even after the 5.1 update. So, I rooted and tinkered with roms that our great XDA developers have been working very hard on, until I found one that was somewhat solid. It ended up being a soak test 5.1 rom. It made the phone snappy and overall great. The only issue is my mic drops out on my bluetooth sometimes. Overall it is a great phone to me for its price.

Question Potential user

Hi Everyone,
I'm in Canada and thinking of picking up the GT 2 Pro (global version) from a local store.
Currently on the Fido network and was wondering:
1. Is anyone having any issues connecting to this carrier? Or any other Canadian carrier?
2. Are there issues updating to Android 13 (comes installed with A12)?
3. Does WiFi connect/disconnect?
4. Should I stay away from this phone and look at something else?
tia
I'm on Freedom, no issues, except no VoLTE available (might be just a carrier thing).
It's cheaper to get Chinese version and flash Global.
Netflix may not work due to Widevine L3 (at least on chinese).
Thanks Quake.
So no issues with dropped calls or wifi cutting in/out?
Are you on A13?
I can get the global version for around $840 CAD

No issues, it's a solid phone. I've had it since summer last year. I'm on A.13 C.12. Check Kimovil.com or other website for full specs on modem bands.
Realme has been pretty good with updates and fixing bugs, they have been releasing updates approx. every month.
Double check current warranty policy. When I bought mine, Realme did not support Canadian/US market.
If you have more cash, you might want to consider Galaxy for better warranty and popularity.

3. Nope, wifi works great (2,4 GHz and 5GHz on WiFi6, WiFi 5 and 4 also OK) for long distances (better than any other phone I've had).
4. This phone is a good deal if you buy it at a reasonable price ($840 CAD is OK) - good cooling system (SD8 gen 1 is disaster in many phones), 3 mayor Android updates, fast charging, SOT 8-9 hours, nice OS (easy to clean), nice display.
Some may be disappointed by the lack of wireless charging and no IPxx (rain and moisture are no problem).
Thank you guys for the feedback.
It's weird that some people are having issues with this phone (i.e. battery drain, wifi/carrier connections, etc). I guess it depends on the ROM????

That's the only explanation I have. I've been using the European rom since day one, and 0 problems (A12, A13, all OK...).
My experience: Mobile data, Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC are fine, no problems. The battery could last more SOT 6,5 hours during two days of use.
I switched from HTC U12+ and I am satisfied.I only changed the launcher, but that's just a matter of taste.

Maybe competitors testing the phone
Some of the issues I have encountered:
1. Low volume on USB-C to 3.5mm adapter -> workaround is to set automatic run of a shell command via Tasker to adjust gain (needs root)
2. Stock camera app isn't color-accurate -> fixed with GCam
3. Some of preloaded Oppo/Realme apps can be annoying -> remove via adb or root app manager
4. Google assistant's read/reply to message while driving function is broken for me - not sure if this is Realme-specific or a common issue. GA will read message, but stop listening for reply.
5. No official free recovery flash tool available. Current EDL flash tool is one-time token based, so you need to pay someone (like $5) to unlock it, in case of a brick.

- Don't expect 8-9 hours SOT, some users claim to get that but most user can't get near this....5-6 maximum is what you should expect from it.
- stock camera sucks, specially for videos, if you not into using gcam and other apps for photos and videos specially if you use the front camera think twice. If you ok using gcam and, mcpro24fps for example you can get good results.
- screen doesn't seem to match the specs advertised, brightness doesn't seem the advertised and touch sampling rate is advertised at 1000hz but it only reach 125hz.
- if you want to play with flashing the device there is no oficial free tool to flash it in case something goes wrong, so in case you get a brick you gonna have to pay a ramdom stranger to access you PC via TeamViewer and flash it for you, and you gonna pay for it.
- don't expect any custom rom for this device.
- snap 8gen1 is power hungry and likes to throttle, but that's not a Realme only problem...
Those are the problems I can remember right now.

Question Amazing Foldable

What a great little device the N2 is. Having bought Chinese phones in the past and been stung by the many notification issues and restrictions I was worried about buying this but so far - all good.
No issues at all (UK based) - all notifications working as expected, even Ring doorbell which I couldn't get working on a Vivo phone.
Banking apps working fine.
Battery life is amazing.
Only downside so far is my Galaxy Watch won't connect but that's no biggie.
Love the form factor and getting rid of my S23 Ultra (and watch !)

Pertaining to galaxy watch, try the steps in my post to get it to work.. after that u have to check permissions and auto launch permissions..
Post in thread 'Which SmartWatch with Find N ?' https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/which-smartwatch-with-find-n.4564227/post-88443823
I though the N2 had the same notifications issue as the original N? i.e. only 5 custom apps?
I absolutely agree, a few little niggles, as expected with it being a Chinese rom, but no deal breakers, other maybe android auto, really miss listening to my podcasts, hoping against hope that they see how many are being used outside China and release a global rom 🫰
