Hello all
What are the advantages and disadvantages of flashing a NG6 rom?

There aren't any NG6 ROMs. You can flash an NC5 ROM and then flash the NG6 Modem, which is what is recommended. The only graded part of NG6 was the modem.
Do not update to NG6!
Stay away from NG6 unless you're looking to Factory Reset your phone and inevitably Odin back to NC5. There are a number of problems with this update but one main issue is random reboots that occur as much as 4-6 times on the hour. The Verizon Wireless Community forums has an ongoing list of members with the issue and zero support from VZ technical staff. (Title: Verizon NG6 Update: Multiple random reboots?) The forum has over 27k views and climbing.

The Modem is quirky as well. Too many hand offs on my short commute to work.
Went back to NC5 Developer radio and all is well again.

I would definitely would recommend you to stay on nc5 or whatever build your on. ng6 doesn't give you any benefits but instead brings a ton of costs .
Marginal benefit<Marginal cost. Shout out to my econ folks here.

Now that the random re-boot issues have been resolved ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/fix-reboot-crash-problem-ng6-root-t2921584) I'm hearing people are liking NG6.
If you are a safestrap user you can find a flashable version of NG6 as well as a script that will remove the knox files causing the random-reboots here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/how-to-root-i545vrufng6-t2905848

I asked a similar question back in October, but fell out of the loop again and didn't want to necro an old post. I just want to verify that the information I got back then is still relavent.
Is installing custom ROMs still the best way to bring my MDK S4 up to the current version? If so, what should I be looking for in a ROM title to tell me that it's just a stock ROM that gives the same experience as the OTA? Someone mentioned Deodex'd in my last post, but I have no idea what that means or if it's what I should be looking for.
And for an S4 that came stock with ME7? Should my girlfriend (with an ME7 update) just take the newest OTA and root that, or is there a benefit to sticking with ME7 and installing a ROM? If the answer is to go with a ROM then she'll want the stock new OTA experience as well for now, are there any ME7 ROMs available that can do that?
Thanks again guys!
Don't touch your MDK S4. Leave it on MDK with Loki. It's practically an unlocked bootloader with actual TWRP and CWM. You can still install 4.3 TouchWiz stock ROMs on it because you can change the kernel. Plus you can run AOSP ROMs, which is awesome.

You're girls me7 s4 might as well update to mj7 or mk2 (4.3) as then she'll still be using Safestrap. Mostly everyone is running Hyperdrive anyways. Great performance and battery life with that. Update it, throw Safestrap 3.71 on there then Hyperdrive 12....pretty much bug free.
As far as you're MDK phone just grab whatever AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 ROM you like. You're lucky to have that phone!!

I have ME7 on my phone and decided to update to be compatible with hyperdrive.
I started the installation like 6 hours ago; is it supposed to take this long?
I had it rooted and got rid of all the bloatware from Verizon using titanium. Would that have something to do with it? Otherwise, I don't know what's going on. Thank you, and I apologize if this was addressed in any other thread.

No its not supposed to take that long. So you're trying to take the ota from me7 you're saying right? You may have to Odin if that doesn't work for you. Sometimes unfreezing and removing mods just doesn't do it

Thats not exactly true as someone who has done it. It can be done by following surges downgrade to mk2 method. I have done this multiple times.

So how's that work for you guys then? You can downgrade but the bootloaders still NC5? And you can still install SafeStrap? I've read multiple things about this and just want to know.
I know Surge's method ( I thought ) involved using SafeStrap from MK2 which makes sense. But those who simply took the OTA can actually go back down and still use SafeStrap?

The bootloader will stay at nc5. It's a partial downgrade. But you get in to download mode and use odin. I haven't had any issues. Then you can use safe root and then install safe strap and then install the nc5 rooted file and your good. I did this last night again it was fairly easy.

GOOD LUCK getting anything from the devs here!!! The following statement is not for you!!!. it is toward the Elitist Devs who insist on Posting SEARCH!!!
They had a bounty up last year to unlock the Bootloader and had a substantial reward for doing so, and they just ignored it, I personally pledged and they willingly took my pledge as it was pushing the bounty up into the mid thousands of dollars, It seems as though they don't want to help any Verizon variant, with Roms or even trouble shooting questions, they just flame people for not searching and treat us like we are idiots, Totally Elitist attitudes because they think they are better than us, When they were us once......Some of us idiots do not have time to read through 2000 pages .... We have lives and Jobs and tons of responsibility, to greedy corporate Elitist Record Companies!!!!! So if ya wanna flame me Be my guest...But be fair warned I fight back....

Lol so much wrong in this post I can't even cover everything replying on my phone. Let me just respond to your observation of what happened with the bounty.
First off, the devs don't do this for a living and have real lives & jobs just like you & I. There were and are tons of people who are trying to figure out how to find an exploit in the bootloader. Trust me, it's one of the biggest bounties we've had on XDA a lot of devs would want all that money. The fact is that it's simply really freakin' hard to figure out and the methods of how to find exploits take tons of time. You have to understand while we have a few thousand dollars in the bounty it really isn't much compared to how much money we're up against. Verizon, pressured by millions of enterprise customers who want secure phones, made Samsung/Qualcomm spend a lot of money locking the bootloader up tight. It's very difficult to crack.

I did it using the old method of surges with the two files instead of the three. I cant upload it here evidently. I am not a developer by no means just have time being unemployed to mess with stuff.
Its pretty simple download the file and extract it and then open odin.
I used 3.09 and put the pit file in the pit slot and then put the downgrade into the ap slot.
The process will fail at cache thats normal.
Reboot the phone back into download mode and then I close odin and reopen it and then in the ap slot put the downgrade system file and it should complete.
When the phone restarts immediately press the up arrow to get into recovery. Then do a factory reset/ Wipe Data and also wipe the cache.
Once this is complete reboot the phone and it should boot and you will be back on the 4.3 partial. I then use saferoot to root and then install safestrap 3.72 and then boot into safestrap and install the rooted nc5 v2 file and then go back into download mode you need to go back into odin and flash and nc5 ap file and cp file and then reboot back into download mode and flash the csc file and reboot and your good to go. I will reply with a link to the files after I upload them.
I will post the file after I get it uploaded.
Surge1223's posts
I have searched for Surge1223's canonical posts on both reverting an SCH-I545 S4 NC5 back to MK2 and then rooting MK2 and the hack to move to NC5 without losing root.
I was rooted on MK2, but got caught by an OTA upgrade to NC5 KitKat 4.4.2. Ergo - no root.
Can anybody point me to these posts?

Follow Surge's downgrade to MK2 from NC2 (it works with NC5 i did this last night [after taking the OTA update]) and follow the upgrade to NC5 in the same post. but when you downgrade dont let the phone boot up at all, you'll have to flash 3 files, just flash, pull the battery out when it tries to reboot, flash the next file, repeat for the third file.
here's his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
the downgrade method is right below the upgrade method.

Thanks, MiniMonster. I've been involved with XDA-Developers for years (under changing 'noms-de-web') and, lately, I've found it highly unwieldy to find critical information among all of the null-content posts and changing threads. The signal-to-noise ratio is getting pretty close to making the site more trouble than its worth.

Guys...
SOrry if this is a poor post, but I'm still new to the gs4 on verizon.
When I got the phone about a week ago, It immediately took an OTA upgrade. I'm geussing this was a mistake?
Only reason I say this, is because i'm now on NC5, and it seems that I'm limited as to what I can do as far as ROMS.
However, I'm seeing that there are people on "MDK" which I'm assuming is an older base...are able to put whatever AOSP rom posted in the forum....
DO all phones comes with MDK base?
I can call them and ask to send a replacement....what are the chances its MDK?
A little help would be appreciated....Thanks!
Doubtful vzn has any phones left with mdk (I'm assuming, it was the original base when this phone came out last summer). If it makes you feel any better you were probably on mk2 4.3 when you took the upgrade, so you didn't really lose anything.
You can root, just no custom kernels, no custom recoveries, just safestrap. I'm running a Google play edition aosp 4.4.3 on safestrap and it runs pretty well. There's a thread in the general section.

MDK bootloader was on the original GS4 and an exploit called loki was found that could bypass the bootloader lock so that you could root & install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM & thereby flash both TouchWiz and AOSP roms. Thanks to Vzw /Att /Samsung, ota updates were issued that kills this exploit. All new phones are locked down. Can still root & use Safestrap recovery to flash TW based roms into a "sandbox" parallel system. Can't flash new kernels though.
Got it! Thanks

Hey guys and girls, I have a question for any of you pretty comfortable with SafeStrap...so, I'm helping someone with an update/upgrade - trying to get them to be able to run KitKat ROMs via SafeStrap on his Verizon S4. But first, I need SafeStrap working again.
OK, basically I brought him from MK2 to NC2 using @Surge1223's method and am now on NC2 (I guess its the rooted- leaked version?)
So...my question is, HOW IN THE WORLD do I get SafeStrap back onto his phone while running on NC2? (All I see are links upon links about SS on NC5)
Thanks SO MUCH to anyone who can help me out here... And yes, I've tried reading and reading...no luck yet

I just did a bit of searching and it seems NC2 is just the leaked version of NC5 and all that changed was a couple apps and a menu. That is secondhand information and may be incorrect I suppose. In any case, I have a NC5 build and used the exact Safestrap APK that I use for my device on my brother in laws S5. I reckon as long as you root/SuperSU/busybox/safestrap you should be good.

No. I said it was secondhand information and I could be wrong. I dont suppose I am though. But I might be. If it were my phone I would try it but I have soft bricked my s4 about four or five times now and am pretty comfortable fixing it so I dont hesitate to try new things. That is just me though.
Jesus loves you!
A couple weeks ago, my Verizon Galaxy S4 let me know that there was an update available. As I always do, I wanted to check out the docs first. Interestingly, this is for the version that the phone is already running. Has anyone else seen this before? Since I have root already, I'm not thinking that I need to install the same, non-root version. What gives here?
I believe this update is for NG6. It has minor fixes from nc5. In my opinion, I would stick with nc5. Just flash ng6 modem if you want a better connectivity.

So the info contained in docs is incorrect, and should indicate NG6 instead? Brilliant. If that's the case, I'll just keep ignoring the upgrade.
