[SOLVED] Yep, I cracked it - Verizon LG G3

So I have a screen protector, spiegel case and a leather belt holster for my baby. I work in IT and somehow today managed to crack the screen. Didn't even have it out of the holster. It's just a hairline crack but I am ocd lol and it makes me sick to look at it . Is there anybody who has replaced the digitizer and screen by thierselves, and if you did could you let me know if it was hard to do and where is the best place to get the parts? Would it be worth the money to just send it back to LG? Thanks in advance!
(Still crying over that crack :crying lol

Have you already pulled the screen protector off? Many times it is the protector that will crack, but the real screen will be fine. My glass screen protector has a micro crack in it right now. I just haven't replaced it yet.

My iCarez 0.2mm tempered glass screen protector on my V985 cracked in several places the first time I took it on an airline trip. I contacted iCarez a couple of weeks ago and they promptly promised to send me a replacement but never have, so far. I have the old broken one still on and it still works, though sometimes I can feel the cracks and that is disturbing...
If your screen is really cracked, usually there will be a dead area in the digitizer. I hope in your case its just the screen protector, because replacing this display is likely to be expensive and difficult.

Well I don't know about the Nexus One, but this screen is scratch resistant for sure
Agreed.. Took my screen protector off about a month ago and it's still mint
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
it comes with a pre applied screen protector, and yes my phone wistanded so much friction and the screen is still as it was out of the box
I removed the screen protector after about a week after I got it, up to now it's still in mint condition. I look at it under the bright sunlight to see if there is any scratch recently, but I found none. So, I believed that it is true, that it is using a mineral glass and scratch resistant, but not scratch proof...
Hey same my screen is pretty mint with one month or normal usage with only the hidden screen protector. I do not think that the screen is scratch resistant but more like the hidden screen protector is.
IMHO I wouldn't take off the preapplied protector unless u replace it right away. I took off the protector when I got it and now my screen is really scratched up. There's even an imprint from when it came into contact with a hot lighter.

Lucky you took the protector off. It would have melted and been stuck permanently. How would you have taken melted plastic off the glass?
mine survived beach use... pretty tough
so i guess the x10 screen is scratch resistant after all

I had a fright the other day when I saw what I thought was a crater from where a bit of hot ash had landed, then realised even it was it had a SP on, in fact it's got two because I put another on not knowing it already came with one applied. It was just bit gravy after all, but had it of been ash it could have been nasty was the screen not protected.
And you can obviously show that it's not really "resistant" as such so I'm with you, leave it on or replace it straight away. But each to their own and all that.

Dear oh dear, dropped my phone now a massive dent on the corner. HA :(

Out today in a construction area place doing a bit of business took me phone out my pocket and dropped it. Haha am gutted. Top right hand corner is scuffed really badly and dented , didnt seem to be a hard fall but it did fall on concrete...
So my first drop 2 months in and a bad drop it was.
Anybody know any good techniques to try smooth it out ? . The glass is fine just the top right hand side of the rim.. Could i get it replaced?

Condolences. It's frighteningly easy to drop this phone & I'm sure any of us would be gutted if it happened to us.
I have a gel case and a screen protector on my S2, it`s too easy to drop very expensive gadgets, you need to fit some protection unless you have loads of money.

Phones with cases, bumpers and screen protectors look worse than phones with dents. What's the point of having a thin phone if it's not thin?

Lol I feel sorry for ya buddy, same thing happened to me just a week ago.
My little bro took my phone and was messing around with it, when he saw me he panicked and threw the thing and ran lol. You can't imagine how low my heart sank as I watched my S2 soar up in the air and come down crashing. Like yours the top corner part of the rim was dented and sorta squashed.
What I did was take a flat plyer and basically shaped the rim to how it was. You just gotta cover the phone with a few layers of thick cloth as to not scratch it with the plyer and take your time doing it. And voila the thing looks as good as new apart from some initial scratches from the fall.
If you wanna try it then be careful and wise cause I'm not to blame if you crack the glass
I dont know if an zagg invisible shields full body would have made and difference with impact damage.
Maybe a wrist strap would have worked better if you dont like bulky cases, the S2 is designed to use a wrist strap, see the hole above the volume key.
Anybody know if its possible to buy the rim seperate as this is the only part that is damaged. Everything else is fine..

Screen protectors are especially useless. Anything strong enough to scratch gorilla glass will go through the screen protector easily anyway.

your looking at big doh and a tricky job mate
the easiest way to do it is to buy the whole front , glass , touch screen , vibrate motors , etc etc this will set you back approx 85-100 pounds and they can be found on ebay
i say this is the easiest way but you still have to move the mainboard to the new front as everything is built into the front of the phone , its an amazing bit of design by the way , just a bit tricky to swap fascias and bits etc
it can be done but it isnt easy and the easiest way to do it is very costly
sorry it wasnt better news mate

really???? i wouldnt say they were useless and i am sure all the people who have scratched sgs2 screens from dust particles (dust can contain things like quartz) or sand from the corner of their bag/pockets would say they were pretty worthwhile too
i would rather scratch a screen protector then scratch my gorilla glass thats for sure
you only have to see the ''i scratched my sgs2 screen'' threads on xda to relaise they arent ''especially useless '' as you put it
have a good day and hopefully you dont come a cropper and end up with a nice scratch on that shiny screen and wandering why you never fitted one of them ''especially useless'' screen protectors lol

Not really, gorrila glass is very resistant to cracks, but can be scratched by something as small as a grain of sand which a screen protector will resist, or be replaced.
As far as the rim, do you mean the bit around the screen, or part of the back? If it's around the glass then you may have to replace the screen and glass, as removing the screen from the glass to replace it and the rim is very difficult!

Gorilla glass and lcd are a glued single unit, i believe you have purchased the right part and it does have the gorilla glass attached.
You are safe
Yup. You are good to go. The glass comes with the LCD. I wont be too sure that its gorilla glass though. It scratches very easily.
Then again the original gorilla glass wasnt too shatter proof anyway.
I see a lot of posts regarding the unbreakable glass on anything that has the gorilla glass. I think the proper term is SCRATCH resistant, not unbreakable?
I think Corning needs to rework it so if you drop it on a corner, it won't shatter
I took the screen protector off of mine over 2 months ago and even as much as it is in and out of the pouch, in the car unprotected, not one scratch. The plastic around it? Now that is another matter
Yup all the screens I have purchased had the gorilla glass. You cannot buy it and if you could I do not see how you would install it.
I have been running withour screen protection and see no need to put anything on the glass.
I did have a screen protector cor months. I do not think it is needed.

Actually guys,
My dad has a dell streak too but that one is with TPU soft case. Both of them fell from the same height. But mine as it was bare bodied, and might have fell on the sweet spot which broke the glass. The other one is scratchless. so now i understand the necessity of the rubber case, also it tends to slip without it from your hands which i have noticed it a couple of times. So lesson learned.. never get off a bigger phone from its layer (case).. Glad it is not an expensive loss though..
Thanks for all your inputs guys..

Buy a Otterbox Commuter or Defender case, the screen protector is crap, but the case itself is very good, should save you the price of buying a new screen. Does make the device quite big, but then its not a small phone.

Do we need screen protectors on the LG G3?

Hi all,
I'm looking to switch to the G3 from an HTC One M8. Love that phone but the camera lens issue and the fact that the screen scratches so easily have really put me off. Once I get my phone back from HTC (who are currently repairing the phone), I plan to trade it in and get the G3. I know the G3 has Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 but given the fact that I've been burned on the One M8, I'm wondering if getting a good screen protector would be worthwhile, even with Gorilla Glass 3. Any thoughts on whether or not Gorilla Glass 3 would be sufficient?
thanks!

I strongly suggest getting one. Nothing worse then scratches on your beautiful screen.
yea that's for sure... i'm still really bothered by the HTC One M8 getting scratched with nothing in my pocket and it happened six days after I got the phone.. so I'm going to make the move to G3 and hope that it won't scratch so terribly easy. Any suggestions on screen protectors? I had used the Zagg Invisible shield and they worked pretty well but they were expensive. Any thoughts?
There is no harm in running a quality protector. Zagg tempered glass protectors have been on my last three phones, and I used Spigen nano TR before that.
Better safe than sorry!
Got the tempered glass protector from Verizon. Can't even tell that it's there.
I'm rolling without it..did the same on my s3 for two years and it didn't get much.. Just be smart about it..not the same pocket as your keys..you'll be fine!
I got the Zagg Glass screen protector right at Best Buy when I got the G3 and all I can say is wow... Wish I looked into these things for my S4.
You can even tell it's on. Obviously doesn't effect the screen quality. With the environment I work in usually within a day my screen protector is all messed up and this thing still looks brand new. And they've put some kind of coating on it so when you're swyping it's silky smooth.
They're $30 or around there but what you want to do is hey it at best Buy and have them put it on... That way if they mess up or it just doesn't come out good... They just try again with a new one so your not out the $30
I highly recommend this screen protector to anyone!

I have never used screen protectors before. For the G3 I got the tempered glass as it is the only type IMO worth buying. I would agree you can barely notice it is there, except I have one singular small bubble in the middle and don't want to remove it to try and fix that one spot

Dunno why people still think this. There have been hundreds of "scratch tests" with keys, knives, etc. vs gorilla glass. None of these will scratch your screen. It's simple physics. Whether something scratches your screen has everything to do with hardness, not sharpness. Any material can only be scratched by another material that is harder than it. "Gorilla glass" is harder than metals and therefore wont be scratched by it. It CAN be scratched by sand, quartz, and other minerals (sand paper will absolutely ruin your screen). Things like tiny particles of sand can't really be avoided by "being smart about it" so I keep my screen covered.
Edit: That being said I also keep my keys/phone separate but not because of my screen, but because the rest of it is plastic, which can be scratched/nicked by your keys quite easily.

No need, I believe you. But that has nothing to do with keeping your keys away from your phone. It is all location dependent, perhaps you just live in an environment with less sand.

Then you, my friend are much luckier than I. Too each his/her own. I too ran my GS3 for about 2 years without a screen protector and ALWAYS in it's own pocket by itself. Somehow somewhere sand got in there and scratched my screen. All it takes is one particle. So I guess for me, with the activities that I partake in, its inevitable. The reason I never used plastic screen protectors was because I never liked how they felt. Now that glass screen protectors are only a few bucks, that's pennies over the lifetime of the phone. I say, why not?

I'd definitely look into it. It's by far the best form of screen protection and you can't even tell it's on.
And another thing.... My S4's screen got scratched by my keys while in my pocket, and that has the guerilla glass so it's definitely possible. Only had the phone a day and tried going without a screen protector. Bad idea.

I don't know why you feel the need to be arrogant about it.
You don't use a screen protector, and haven't had a scratched screeb...cool.
I use one because I've had a scratch despite my efforts to pocket my phone by itself. My work requires me to visit sites that have dust and sand etc... I can tell you that a small piece of sand will scratch your phone easy.
Tempered glass protectors are nice and leap years above the plastic ones of old. Outside of the cutout for the speaker I wouldn't know I have one on here.

Huh? Arrogant about it? The original question is do you need one.. the answer obviously is, it depends. Like the guy I was talking to said.. we all live in different circumstances.. I don't care what anyone else does, all I can do is state my experience. Plastic screen protector? Don't bother. Tempered glass? Maybe. I haven't tried it.. but I don't need either. Perhaps you misread what I said but I wasn't going for arrogance.

LG glass

Has anyone noticed that the glass on the back is very sensitive and scratches easily? Also my sister threw my keys to me about 10 feet away and it cracked the phone ??. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this fragile glass. Honestly disappointed that the glass scratches easily. I've had a Note 5 for 2 years and the glass isn't scratched yet..

The higher version of gorilla Glass the more prone to scratching it is but less likely to shatter. That's why they used 3 on the front and 5 in the back

Man that sucks. The only thing that makes sense to me of why that glass is breaking on certain phones is the outer ring surrounding the glass might be such a tight fit that it's under tension. Then randomly it just gives. Have you spoken to any customer support yet?

I'm afraid I'll have to spend that insurance money. I don't have it yet lol?. I didn't speak to any customer support but I don't know what to tell them. Hardware damage is pretty black and white to them. If anyone have any suggestions please feel free I can use it.

The hard thing is physical damage is really difficult to prove it's a manufacturer issue. Wouldn't hurt to call him and point them in the direction of the multiple complaints that already exists
I too noticed the glass on the back was getting scrached by having a case on!#. It was stupid. Good thing my girlfriend owns a cellphone repair kiosk and installed the pahnthon clear skin on it. Two days later i dropped my phone four steps away from reaching the second floor without my hard case and the phone didnt break thanks to the skin.
