[Q] mk2 or nc5? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I've been debating whether or not to upgrade to nc5 from mk2.
I know that towelroot would root nc5. I'm mainly concerned if there were any security patches or fixes in nc5 that would affect the ability to run kexec( if it gets running) on nc5.
I'm fairly confident that surge is working on building kexec on nc5 instead of mk2, but I'm just paranoid of pulling another mdk to me7 again
(This is really geared towards the " if we are serious about unlocking the bootloader thread" I just didn't want to ask questions there.)

Just give it time and stay on mk2 for now. Once kexec comes out then just go to that bootloader.

I just finally upgraded to NC5 from MK2, tonight.
I kept the MK2 boot loader. I haven't yet fixed tether, but everything else is good.
Looking forward to 5.0. I just want to maintain flexibility as long as possible, with the MK2 platform.
Sorry, I know nothing about kexec.

[Q] Why does the MK2 bootloader matter?

Probably a noob question, but if you want root for titanium, wifi tether, xposed mods, etc...
Why is it so important to stay on MK2.
There's a few threads on downgrading from NC5 to MK2, and back up to keep the MK2 bootloader.
MK2 is not MDK, you can't run a custom recovery.
So what's so bad about taking the NC5 OTA and then just rooting? You can still run SS? Can yoi not flash a SS compatible ROM on NC5s bootloader?
Just trying to understand the difference. I know the benefit to MDK, just not anything else.

People hold out hope that someone may unlock the mk2 bootloader. To me it doesn't matter I'm on the NC2/NC5 bootloader myself.

Are we pretty close to unlocking MK2? Should I hold out?
I used your method to upgrade to NC5, but the audio over wifi glitch has me on the verge of taking the OTA.
Im not really seeing any other way of fixing this issue except going stock?
Also alot of those threads were made before a native NC5 exploit was released. Before towelroot, the MK2 bootloader downgrade was the method for root.

It really sucked having to do that. It was my first root ever and I soft bricked my phone three times because I knew less than nothing about rooting and whatnot. Three weeks later: Towelroot. Now its a party lol.

But there are more devs working for a bootloader exploit for the S5, than the S4.
And the S5, so if there is an exploit on the S5, it will probably transfer over to the S4 at the NC5 level since that firmware is on par with the S4s NC5.
So isn't it better to go to full NC5?

Is there a thread/how-to on flashing ROMS with NG6

I just upgraded from an S3 to an S4 (Verizon) today. My S3 was still running an unlocked bootloader, so I could flash to my heart's content. But being new to the S4, I'm not sure what, if any, limitations there are to flashing ROMs on NG6. I'm assuming that since it's Verizon, they locked down the S4 just like they did the S3. But any advice would be appreciated. I just rooted with the kernel downgrade/upgrade method, so I'm good to go in that respect.
Thx!
Are you on NC5? I would just flash the NG6 modem and see how it works for you. It's the best for me in acquiring a cleaner LTE signal.

i'm on NG6. that's what it had when i got it (via Ebay). i downgraded the kernel to NC5 to root, but read in the same thread that keeping the NC5 kernel would cause instability. so i Odined back to NG6.

I used the Odin NG6 image and it has been great. The modem gives me far better signal in the valley that I live in. Mine came with NC5 from Verizon a few months ago.

[Q] What can I do??? MK2 to MDK

Is there anything I can do to roll back to MDK BASEBAND so I can actually unlock the bootloader? I am currently on MK2 stock ROM.
Is it even possible to unlock the bootloader on MDK? I have spend over 6 hours researching and trying to figure this thing out. I really want to stay away from safestrap...
Can someone point me to a thread or explain this to me? I can't seem to find anything relevant to this question.

No way to rollback to MDK my friend - the only ones on MDK are us lucky sods that got it that way and kept it. The bootloader is not unlocked on MDK - workaround is available using Loki exploit. Verizon quickly closed that hole with subsequent "upgrades". At this point safestrap is your only option.

So there is no way to NUKE the phone and push the original MDK Baseband to the phone like it was done at the factory? : (

[Q] If I downgrade to MK2 can I then install CyanogenMod?

In a word - NO. Even going back to the MDK bootloader is not possible once you have taken the OTAs. And even then, MDK is still locked. The likelihood of the bootloader getting unlocked is slim and none. Kexec is the next choice and even its development has slowed as it is very hard to crack the bootloader issue.
As is often repeated, read the FAQs and search topics before posting.
To install anything other than a TW based rom, you need to be on the MDK bootloader. Once you have a newer bootloader than MDK, you are stuck with TW based roms and Safe Strap.

Is it safe to update to Lollipop?

So I have my rooted NK1 4.4.2 S4 going happily now.
But it immediately tried to install the OTA update to go to lollipop.
I'm all for updates, but I've seen some scary things about going to OC1 and not being able to go back and such.
I'm okay with not being able to go back, as long as I can keep root.
I've tried the various roms and I prefer stock for some reason, so lollipop is okay with me. However I must have root. So, is there a safe way to update to lollipop from nk1 and keep root? Or obtain root on oc1 and just do a normal ota update with nothing special? Most guides seem to require you start from a rooted Nk4, which I'm unsure how to achieve.
Muniz_ri has the answer to go to OC1 while keeping root. THEN go to OF1. I'm not sure if you can skip OF1 with his method. @muniz_ri can we?

Huh.. Didn't even know there was an OF1..
So what is the advantage to going to lollipop anyway? Other then the new OS. Better battery life, performance? My galaxy tab runs lollipop and its not that exciting..
Well, it just came out yesterday.
Other advantage is getting rid of some security bugs... Otherwise, you listed them all.
