I know there will be a number of people in the exact same boat as me, and since I'm a moron, I could use the guidance before making a fatal error...
I pre-ordered the S3 prior to June 28th on Verizon to use my available upgrade and lock-in my unlimited plan for another 2 years. However, I do not want this phone and want to get the Inc4G instead.
I know I'll have to sell the S3 and buy the Inc4g off-contract. What I don't know is if I have to activate the S3 on my line prior to selling it. I see all these ebay listings saying the S3 is new and never activated, but when I asked vzw support over email they sort of insinuated that I had to activate the S3 first before selling it as part of the agreement process. Does that sound right?
If so, I guess I activate the S3 when I get it then box it all back up and send it to the eventual CL/eBay buyer - do I have to do anything to wipe the phone at that point for the person that buys it from me?

If I understood you correctly, you already upgraded your line, and so you can activate the s3, and then do whatever you want with it, as long as you keep the line active and pay your monthly bill. I've gotten phones as upgrades, then sold them soon after, the esn remains clean as long as the person who originally bought the phone as upgrade/new line keeps maintaining the line, or they pay the full etf.
In terms of preparing for sale, factory reset the phone before you sell it, that way your personal info is erased. Also, don't forget to wipe the SD card (if it came with one).
You don't have to ebay it. If you go to an actual VZW store and have them do an exchange which comes nicely along with a 35 dollar restocking fee, and not a return/replacement which they will want to do because it gets the sales rep a commission but screws you, you can swap it out in the store and keep unlimited data. The only thing you have to do is before you bring it in to swap it out it must be activated at least once, then you can wipe it or what ever.
Just make sure you talk to a sales rep that isn't a dope.

This! Definitely try an exchange at a Verizon Corporate store before you go through the trouble of selling your GS3 on eBay. There have been numerous people in this forum who've successfully exchanged phones without having their data plan changed, but a few folks haven't been as lucky. It's definitely worth a shot though.

...it's that part that worries me and after it's all said and done, they're like 'whoops, you lost unlimited. sorry bro, you only need 2gb anyway so what's the big deal - it's totally better this way'
I'll definitely go the exchange route first, though, before dealing with eBay - although it looks like I'd come out ahead $-wise with eBay.
Thanks for the help.
Thanks, I also plan to do this when I get my phone. I pre-ordered to retain my unlimited data.
Since the Inc4g is $149 and the GS3 is $199, do you get $50 back (then the restocking fee)?
I may still do the ebay route depending how much money I can get for it and how much cheaper I can buy an inc4g for. I also noticed the ads all say "unopened" "clean esn" "ready to activate"
If you are required to activate your phone prior to switching, then how do these ebay people do it?
Once I get the Inc4g, do I just activate using the setup on the phone or do I need to call in? If I activate the SG3, then buy an inc4g and activate that, then does that mean the SG3 now has a "clean esn"
Correct me If Im wrong , but I was under the impression if you go and EXCHANGE your SG3III box UNOPENED they will NOT charge a restocking fee.

I heard that if you do that (or any exchange), you lose your unlimited. But I've heard different stories.
When I called my local verizon store and asked if I could retain my unlimited data when exchanging the phone they said no. I guess I could try calling a different location or something...
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA app.
You should be fine with not losing unlimited. The only way you can lose it is if you upgrade your phone with a new contract. I would assume if you upgraded the line already the contract should be in place. You can log into your account and see when the upgrade dat eis.
I called my local verizon store today and they told me they would accept the s3 and I would still be able to keep my unlimited data. I will do it once I get off work since my phone arrives today. I will post back tonight!
So if I get an Inc4g (and sell the SG3) and keep my unlimited, do I just activate the Inc4g? or do I need to first activate the SG3, then activate the Inc4g?
Hey,
The key is you need to open the box and activate the GS3 which nails you with the 35 dollar restocking fee for swapping it out for the exchange but it also locks in your contract with unlimited data.

When you "exchange" do you get the $50 rebate?
I may plan to sell it on ebay then buy an Inc on ebay. I figure if I can sell for $600 or higher and get an Inc4g for $350 or lower, I will break even with verizon's $200 + tax + $35 fee assuming I can't take advantage of the $50 rebate.
In that case, do I still need to open it and activate it?
And if I don't activate, and just activate the Inc4g, then what happens?
Is there anything special to be done with the sim card?
I have successfully exchanged in my S3 for the Incredible 4g. I walked in with my un-opened/un-activated S3 and asked for a straight up exchange. I still have my unlimited data intact and received the $50 dollar mail in rebate. HOWEVER I did have to pay the $35 dollar restocking fee. Good luck.

I will also be switching to Inc from S III because of the sh!t screen the S III has on it (dim, pentile, generally crap).
I do not expect to pay restocking. I will not be opening the S III box!!! That would be completely unacceptable. I also expect the $50 difference of the price. It's just plain fair.
Also S III has locked boot loader, Inc does not. I hope this means we get good ROMs and mods etc.

I am not usually one to be rude in public or anything, but that is unacceptable. I assume you have not opened the box. In my case they won't have a problem selling a Galaxy S III. They'll probably sell my phone that day. So I don't expect anything less than $50 back and a "Have a Nice Day".
I do wish I had an S III with an LCD display. But the AMOLED is just so incredibly terrible no pun intended. At least to my eyes, anyhow. YMMV.
OH, if I can get the $50 rebate then I think its indeed worth it to exchange vs trying the ebay route with the selling fees, paypal fees, and shipping it would be tough to break even even with paying that $35 restocking.
I suspect with enough complaining and letters, I could get that waived if it was still sealed on box. Ofcourse its a "restocking" fee, not a "repacking" fee. Does it really cost them $35 to put the box back on the shelf?
Looking to buy this phone ASAP. My sprint contract is not up, but I will be cancelling and gladly paying them to get to a real LTE network. Anyone know of the best deal now or around Black Friday? I don't want to pay $299, and then activation fee, and then ETF fee, but i guess if i absolutely have to, I will.

Nobody knows dude. It isn't coming out until a week after BF. Doubtful there will be any deals on this initially, maybe towards Xmas time or some promo at a few stores for gift cards. It isn't going to be released and then have an instant $100 off. You are pretty much stuck paying the cost as is.

You can weasel out of the activation fee if you go to the store. Just tell the rep you will buy from him/her if you waive the activation fee. (The reps make commission off of sells.) He/she will ask the manager for the ok and you should be good to go then. Feel free to mention that you are coming from Sprint and signing a new contract. If they give you crap, just pretend like you changed your mind and want to stick with sprint. If you handle it right, you will never have to pay for an activation fee.
I honestly doubt Verizon or Best Buy will go any cheaper on the device itself.

It has been really hard for me to get them to waive the activation fee. Tried to do it with iP4 and my sister's iP4S. Didn't work, went to 2 different stores/called in and tried to order it. Maybe it was just my luck..
I think you can get the activation waived if you go to a third party reseller, though.
I think if you get the phone at Best Buy where they don't charge an activation fee it'll show up on your first bill.

Yessir.
I didn't threaten my business. Maybe I will try that. Iheard the best way is to walk out saying you'll go to another sales rep, though since they aer commissioned based. Although it seems this may not matter as much, as they have lowered their commission by quite a lot for their employees to they might just be like F it, let him go to a dif store. I don't think there is any way in hell this will happen online or via phone though. I tried it before with absolutely no luck. They do not seem to budge at all.

Yeah, it sucks too because I called best buy/ best buy mobile and asked them about preorders. I asked if there was an offer next week for the note ii could I come in and preorder it and get the deal they are offering that day. They said no, the sale counts as the preorder date. I used to work in a retail store that had this exact policy as well, so it is doubtful you can get any deals anywhere at this point.
Yeah it sucks. Best Buy had a %20 off black friday coupon that we couldn't use on pre orders. Would have gotten it at $263
If anyone's interested, I think Wirefly is selling it for $280....at least for my zip code.

I found the best way to do it via Best Buy via their $50 gift card offer they had months ago. You just had to register with it letting them know that if you upgraded you could use the $50 gift card towards it. Also a rep MIGHT be willing to wave their crappy fees in the promise you will buy accessories from them as I believe that still helps credit their sales scores for the month.
They had one but I would have to change to everything plan. Is it really worth it to lose my unimited data and off contract on two devices just for this watch???

Hell NO don't give up your unlimited data for that damn watch what is wrong with you unless you are not a data hog and you don't mind paying overages for your devices
I am looking for opinions before making a rash decision. I appreciate the previous comments and am looking for others.
Edit: a store rep did some research. I can keep the unlimited for my phone if I buy the gear s as a separate device paying $25/month with no 2 year contract.
I am wondering if this would work. I have a at&t galaxy s5 and want to buy a nano sim adapter. http://microsim-shop.com/
i would buy the watch off contract. When I want to take just my watch I pop in the nano sim and go, when I want my phone, I put the nano sim in the adapter for the s5.
This way I won't lose my unlimited data, wonder if it will work?

Yes as far as I was told by the store sales rep. I do not want to be locked into a two year contract with smartphones/watches evolving so quickly. For all I know I will use the gear s for a while and find it is not worth having or paying $25/month. I still should be able to connect via Bluetooth at no Verizon cost.

I'm told you can add the gear s to a grandfathered family plan with the old data lines 9.99 + 20/300mb 30/3gb 50/5gb. Im waiting to buy one off contract and put one of my unlimited line's sim card in it. There's no reason it shouldn't work unless they have the gear imei's flagged (like a tablet in an unlim phone plan). I haven't found anyone saying they've done it yet though.

I decided that unlimited data was more important. If i cannot keep it, , no Gear S.
As reported on CNET....Verizon will raise the cost of the Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan from $30 to $50 per month starting in mid-November.
However....Verizon also said they will no longer throttle users who retain their unlimited data plans....AND will no longer require payment in full when you get a new phone...you can now go on a monthly payment plan if you desire.
http://www.cnet.com/news/verizon-promises-an-open-road-for-unlimited-data-customers/?ref=yfp
I don't know about others...but I WILL keep my unlimited data, it's still cheaper than their 12GB tiered plan and I often go over that limit.

Yeah, not too happy about that. I knew the gravy train wouldn't last forever. I've had other 'grandfathered' VZW features suddenly go up in smoke.

Just do the Best Buy trick and you can get a discounted phone under contract for another 2 years at the grandfathered $29.99. They don't raise your rate until you're out of contract.

Well people with unlimited like to buy subsidized phones from Best Buy because it allows them to pay the subsidized cost instead of full retail while still keeping their data. The only downside is that it puts you into a 2 year contract with Verizon. Recently, however, this downside has turned into a massive upside. Starting November 15th your unlimited bill increases $20 per month for off-contract customers. If you lock into a contract before November 15th, your bill won't increase $20/month for another 24 months. The trick is to buy the phone online from best buy, throw away the sim card they give you, insert your current sim card, and you still have unlimited with a 2 year contract. But if you use the best buy sim card you lose unlimited forever.

Nice summary. I'm still debating whether or not to do this. Is there any risk that you might lost unlimited data?
Is this increase confirmed though? They stated that current unlimited users will be notified after Oct 15th, and I have yet to be notified. I went into a Verizon corp store last week and even the employee did not hear about this. Not that you can believe what they say 99% of the time though, but regardless.

There is always a risk. I would say, if this increase is true, I will try the BB trick before all is said and done. If they increase me, I will leave Verizon and go back to ATT. Around here I have better service with indoors with ATT anyways. All in all, they have just made things way too expensive now a days with non-sub phones (which I agree with) but the costs of line connections and everything else is stupid.
So all one would need to do is Buy a phone on Bestbuy's website and throw away the sim and use the old one? and you keep your old data plan? (reason i'm asking is because right now the Galaxy s6 edge is only 50 on contract)
Pretty much. Search the slickdeals threads for other instructions. Thanks for the heads up. If the increase deems true I will pick up two of these at $50.
Could I then reactivate my Note 3 (if I buy the S6 edge) and then sell it? Or does it have to stay activated on the account for a time period?

I am no expert on the subject (yet), lol, but it looks like many activate the new phone then sell it. The acct is tied to the SIM, not the phone.

Bilku I just went to the Best Buy website and it says that you have to choose one of the tiered plans because unlimited is no longer available. What is the updated method for dealing with this or were you able to pick "existing" at the time?
edit: just got this answer in another forum is this what you did?:
"Actually they don't make you choose anything.. They just tell you you'll be shifted to the default 2gb for 30 bucks tiered plan. Just acknowledge it and do the sim switch"

They can because they are Verizon. I bit the dust and went with a V10 upgrade last night. Gave the wife my Note 3, upgrading her from a Note 2. I like it, runs smooth, nice screen, everything works well, and with the promo of battery, 200gb card and charger, I couldn't pass it up. I don't like losing UDP, so went with the 18gb plan. With a 22% discount, same as 12 anyways.
I believe hotspot is "free", but haven't tried it yet.
Did anyone else try the BB method with success? jamor414? On a side note, I just got a replacement Note 3 (my old one stopped charging) and it actually had 4.4.2 on it! Pleasantly surprised...
I thought I could buy the v10 through Tmobile without a contract. Pay full price but the person on their chat told me it wasn't possible. So, Im looking for suggestions as to the best options to buy the phone w/o contract and with some type of warranty.

You can buy the phone from T-Mobile without a contract but you do need a plan.
Just talk to a different person imo.
If all else fails you can purchase it with a cheap pay as you go plan.
The cheapest I think is $3 for 30 min.
You however will have quite a few hurdles to jump through to get it unlocked from T mobile.
They require at least $100 to be spent on your account and 40 days of active service to unlock it.
You can get around those if you are lucky, some people have not been able to.
If you can do without warranty, your best option may be to use a service like swappa.com
You can buy new and used phones from people there.
Just make sure to check the condition of the phones before purchasing, also note if they are unlocked or not if you will be using a service other than T mobile.
If you must have a warranty of some kind, there are after purchase options available from places like squaretrade, however they are more expensive than I personally think they are worth.
Good luck finding your new phone.
You sure can buy it outright.

Thanks guys.
@L0x -- any luck??
I got mine from AT&T right after the release. I spent a bunch of time on various chats until I got someone who told me that I could get the phone unlocked within 3 to 5 days after purchase. Added to cart with the cheapest plan & ordered.
AT&T auto-activated the phone when it showed delivered. As I am using the phone in Europe on Vodafone, this was a problem. It took, all said and done, probably 8 hours across a month and a half on chat, twitter, and phone calls to get AT&T to send me the unlock code, cancel the plan, and wipe the account balance to zero. Unlock code was immediate, the rest took the longest. I didn't mind harassing them very much because I had my unlocked phone.
After it was all said and done, I have the AT&T variant with an unlock code, running on Vodafone, with nothing paid to AT&T except the cost of the phone. It takes time, persistence, and patience to make it happen.

Not yet per say. I'm about 2 weeks out from purchasing. Holiday kicked my ass. But I will update this thread when I purchase. I'm weighing right now actually going with a Tmobile plan. I use Metropcs right now. Just not liking the 20$ more a month for less data.
I'm in Canada. Bought mine from Best Buy in NYC. They give the option for a friend to pick up. Works great
