Solution for Random Reboots(MOTO E) - Moto E Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been playing with my MOTO E for quite a few days.
The ONE thing that kept bothering me for all these days were the Random Reboots.
After trying many thing finally I have come up with a practical solution to this problem.
I have been having random reboots with the Stock Rom as well as other Custom Roms. Usually while pressing the power button the power menu used to appear for few seconds and then without pressing anything the phone to restart, and this happened with the stock rom as well as other custom roms. I had contacted Motorola, they had asked me to boot into SAFE mode and see if the problem persisted , and it did. So I started using the trail and error method and what I found out that it's a hardware issue, or a issue with how our power button works.
SOLUTION :
So basically what I did is I replaced the power button with the Volume buttons for waking up the device, and for putting it to sleep i assigned the pull up gesture(which is usually for launching google now). I assigned the sleep function in CM11 for the pull up gesture(if you are using the stock rom you'll need to use screen lock apps which allows that function).
After applying this, I have been using my phone for about a month now, WITHOUT a single random reboot.
This is a simple yet effective solution.
Hopefully this'll help you and save you those annoying random reboots.

Can you please explain in detail ? I am using stock rom, and my phone reboots randomly few times a day.

Use "Pocket Lock" application to lock and unlock/wake your device instead of the power button and check if the problem persist...!!

Hello,
as I was going mad with the "Power Button random reboot", I discovered your helpful post. I didn't know it was possible to set the phone to wake up on volume buttons. On the other hand CM allows you to put your phone in sleep mode touching the notify bar twice.
Half a day with these settings, it seems good, Moto E has a real problem with power button, now I have to control myself not to touch it anymore !
Thanks.

phone not waking up

Hi guys,
I am having this weird issue with my i9100, sometimes i can't wake my phone up! Only way is to remove the battery and put it back in
I have a feeling this may be a common issue, but I just didn't know what key words i had to use to search for this specific issue. I hope it is software, and not hardware.
I currently have the old lite'ning rom installed.
this person described my situation perfectly:
"Twice I have left my phone and then when i press the power button in the side to wake the screen in it wont turn on. I first thought it had ran out of power as no matter how many times i press the power button nothing happened. But if you press the volume button you can hear the phone beep as it gets louder so it is one. The only way i can get the screen to work is to take the battery out and put it back in again?"
helpp ( when the phone goes on sleep, it ignores everything even calls
Heya, seems like a ROM/kernel issue to me (perhaps even undervolting one). Try installing the newest version od your ROM, or Kernel and make sure you have no undervolting active. Hope it helped ya.

[Q] Power button weirdly causing random restart. Really need help ASAP

Hello all!
My Moto E is of lately causing a very weird problem. If I press the power button more than even 1.5 to 2 seconds (yeah, I measured it), the phone restarts. This problem was persistent when I had not rooted the phone, and even now after rooting with PA 4.6 beta5 ROM, the problem has become more grave. If I keep the button pressed even for half a second more after the Power Options are displayed, the phone restarts! I tried Factory Reset, Re-Flashing the ROM, but all in vain.
This is really a grave problem for me.
Please help.
Im too facing this randomly... I guess thats a hardware problem( mayb switch)...
Same problem here... Did everything I can... But all in vain....
Me too.....it used to randomly restart...and now i think the power button is stuck inside a little...
Its already reported in Official Motorola forum by many people here. Now i use volume key to wake up phone using Gravity box and double tap statusbar to sleep...

I used to have the same problem. Later I rooted the device and installed xposed framework. Still it rebooted randomly. I had dropped the phone a little while ago due to which the power button became a little loose. Afraid of breaking the power button, I started to wake up my device using volume buttons. Use GravityBox to do so if you have xposed installed. Else you can search for an app that does the same on Play Store(although these apps suck your battery heavily). After using the volume buttons to wake up my device, I noticed that my phone no longer restarts. If your phone still restarts after following these steps, use any different way to lock the device like 'double tap on Status Bar' (like I use).
Hope I helped friend.
me too!
i have been having this problem from quite a few days; it only exists when i install a new app and then when i delete it the random reboots will stop; i believe this is a bug in the kernel which is getting triggered by an app.
hope it can get fixed via software update, possibly by lollipop.
ps: never had a problem while on clean format (with no extra apps)

Issue has been solved but looking for explanation

So my friend's stock s3 started randomly rebooting recently and just couldn't get to the home screen without many tries. And it got worse this morning as she had spent about an hour to no result. The problem is the phone would keep rebooting during the GT-I9300 screen.. Most of the time it wouldn't get to the Samsung boot animation.. If I charged it, the battery logo would be shown as loading instead of charging.. After trying the hard reboot combination a few times which didn't work, I noticed that I could see the battery with green bar every time I pressed the power button!
So I tried something silly.. I kept pressing the power button repeatedly during boot and surprisingly it booted up to the home screen. However, without being charged, the phone would still suffer from boot loops (at that moment we confirmed that the pressing power button repeatedly would 100% work) . As we were desperate to understand the problem, I got to know some apps that she installed recently and uninstalled them. These are the apps that she recently installed and later uninstalled:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vStudio.Android.Camera360
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fourricegroup.mc
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naturalmotion.clumsyninja
Guess what?! The bootloop has not happened till now! So the reason I'm writing this post is because of curiosity xD
1. How does pressing the power button repeatedly help the phone to boot up? If I stop pressing it before the locksreen, it would fail.
2. Can an app really cause a weird issue like this? Or is it just a coincidence that the phone magically got better after uninstalling the apps?
Hope to get some answer from you guys for learning purposes thanks in advance!
Sounds like your power button is faulty.

How to switch on Xiaomi Mi4i without the power button

Hi,
My phone has a faulty power button and I'm unable to get it fixed. I've found easy work-arounds for it for locking and unlocking the phone. However, I'm not sure how to turn on the phone if it's switched off.
When I connect the charger, even if the battery is 90% it won't turn on on its own...

Nope, the only way I could turn it on was to open the back cover (very painful process) and then press the button area with a pin.
Couldn't get it fixed, so I had to change the phone.
I think there are possibilities in rooted phones, but otherwise the best thing to do is to keep a battery alarm at 30% or more, and keep it on charging whenever you can to avoid a power off. In power on, there are many ways of locking the screen in the MI UI.

Thanks. I installed Blocco Schermo - Simi Studio v.3.21 , a simple app to lock the screen...and when i flagged the option "show in notification area" , the problem magically disappeared.. The Power On/Off button started to work again. I think it was an hardware problem (because the problem has come up after the phone was at the sunlight for hours in my car and went very hot) but now i think it's obviously a software problem.
Hi guys, I got the same problem too. Unfortunately, I drained my batt while playing games. So the problem now is I can't turn it on. Any idea how to turn on the phone without using the power button?
I solved it
Hi guys i solved a problem! You should hold main button + down volume button for 10-20 seconds. Then, when MI Remote opens, stay on the reboot and wait about 3 minutes, then stay on the reboot systems as well. Great work!
just change the volume flexible. its also not took much cost.

Power button issues? Press power once but it double-presses. Custom rom issue?

How many of you guys have a power button issue?
When pressing power to turn off screen it often double-presses.
For me that means often (but not always, maybe 50/50)
When I press power to turn off screen:
- It instantly goes to lock-screen (the same as if i manually pressed power twice. Once to turn off, once to turn back on), then I have to try again to turn off screen.
- Camera app opens (if double-press-power to open camera setting is activated). This one is most frustrating as I love the shortcut to open camera, but now camera often pops up when I just want to turn off screen.
One user mentioned this power button issue only exists in custom roms, and when they switch back to MIUI it works fine.
To me it sounds like a hardware issue though, but who knows. If it's a software issue I'm hoping somewhere out there knows a fix.
Has anyone had this issue on custom rom, then switched back to MIUI and it was fixed? Or have you switched back to MIUI and the problem still existed?
If it's a hardware issue then I just have to put up with it.
If it's a software issue... I really want to stay on custom roms... but eventually it's going to make me snap and go back to MIUI
This problem exists for me on Mido/Snapdragon with AOSPA and LineageOS. Haven't yet switched back to MIUI to see if it fixes the problem, but I'll give it a try when I find the time.

Same here. But in my case, it's when I'm holding the power button to bring up the power menu, it would just randomly turn the screen off and on in split seconds. And I'm using unofficial Resurrection Remix Nougat v5.8.5.
I suggest you use another way to turn off the screen, like double tapping the home button. I always double tap the home button to turn off the screen to conserve the power button, but this feature depends on the ROM you're using.

I don't want to jinx it, but I may have solved the power button issue moments ago!
I'm on AEX 4.5 and been having this issue ever since flashing Custom ROMs. Well, what I did now was press the power button a little harder and longer than usual and it turned off the screen correctly - didn't immediately turn back on automatically as usual.
And ever since doing that, the power button has been working as normal.
---
However, I've got another problem now. Even though pressing the power button now works correctly - turns the screen off, holding the power button has got issues. When I hold the power button to bring the power menu up, it treats it as a double press and camera opens.
For now, I've resorted to using the "Reboot" Quick Settings tile for rebooting (however, power off will be an issue).
---------
Edit: Looks like I did jinx it. Minutes later, the issue is back. Power button is back to being useless.
i had it too...i went to service center and got it replaced. it works fine now so i guess it is a hardware issue

You just got the button replaced? I wonder how hard that is to do myself hmm. First need to find a replacement part
Experiencing the same issue..I guess it is a hardware issue as I didn't get this problem earlier but now it is there on the same custom ROM in which it was working fine earlier.
Same here
I'm too facing this issue. I noticed this issue when I was on official lineage OS 15.1 build. Now I'm running latest MIUI 9 stake build and guess what the problem still persists. I guess it's a hardware issue but who knows. But it happens rarely. I mean 1 time after every 10 clicks. Also my volume down bhuton is behaving strangely. Whenever I click it one time, volume goes down by 2 or 3 steps. Happens 2 times in 10 clicks
maybe redmi note 4 has this hardware issue. 1.5 years later and now the buttons have became too mushy.
Deleted
can we get it repaired free of cost at mi service centre, if its in warranty
I'm on lineage os 19.1 with ngk kernel on poco f1, I replaced the power button (the part with the flat cable) and the back cover since the issue was persisting, but the issue persists also now so I think it is a software issue, I reported the bug but who knows if devs will fix it
