Hi,
A friend of mine has a problem with his S3. As soon as it boots it shows this screen:
Phone isn't able to boot into recovery mode. Only Download mode - it shows the following:
The problem is when trying to flash a emergency firmware (or any other thing) in Odin. It shows COM7 Connected, but when press Start, it takes a few minutes, and finally then shows the message: Failed to open COM (Port)!!...
I am sure that Kies is not running (even tried at other PC - installed successfully Samsung Drivers), and the result is the same!
Can you help me with this? Or shall I consider it a lost cause?
Thanks in Advance
Cako
That's a corrupt or damage emmc chip, sorry.
Try the dead boot restore thread in general forum.

Hi,
I tried to flash CWM onto my i5500 using Odin using the one package method. Odin detected the phone and I started the flash but it just went on and on showing no progress (30 minutes +). In the end I had to close it down.
I can still get into download mode, and Odin still detects the phone as connected, but I'm unable to flash anything, it just does the same as before. Odin does not display the phone's model at the top of the screen if that is a problem (just says "android"). If I try to turn the phone on it goes to the PC/orange triangle/phone screen.
Any ideas why Odin would not be able to flash anything like this and whether I need to do something different to get it out of this bricked state?
Thanks
Well, I've now tried on a windows XP machine and I got am error which was something along the lines of "could not open serial port: code 2". I swapped USB port and got the same result as when using windows 7 - just sits there forever saying it's "downloading recovery.img"
Is there a way I can flash the recovery using adb or something? Any help would be appreciated
Hi Guys,
My cousin's phone(GT-I9100) was soft-bricked at first. He was on Stock ICS and this **it happened with an OTA update via wifi. He purchased the phone in Germany and warranty period was over.
It has the following issues:
Enters Download mode but does NOT enter recovery mode (confirmed NAND rw corruption)
Doesn't flash
Bad flash in odin (FAIL after flashing, or the flashing suddenly stops)
I have tried all the methods including the bootloader flashing. But all the time flashing via odin stops and when I have flashed the mentioned Kernel(Kernel_I9100XXLPH) it wasn't success. Hope was lost .
Now somehow still the download mode works but when I start the phone , its showing that "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
When connected through Kies, the phone is not recognized. Please help me on how to recover my phone.
I have followed the guide mentioned here
BTW tried to flash through heimdall also on a linux system. Below error occured
Initialising connection...
Detecting device...
ERROR: Failed to access device. libusb error: -3
Tried to re-partition using the pit file from here. But it stucked at
"Setting up PIT"
Was it completely bricked? Is there any other way to restore?
Do I need to change the motherboard or something to get the phone running?

Hi there,
I read your post and I have the *EXACT* same same problem, everything you described is what my phone is doing. I have a SGS2 GT-i9100M.
Were you ever able to find a solution to the problem?
Don't know how much this'll help but there was a thread a few days ago where someone faced the same issue. Flashing via Odin fails and the firmware error. Turns out he hadnt plugged he phone into a USB port connected directly to the computer. ie. Not via a hub or a USB port on the keyboard etc. Odin has problems with that. Also disabling KIES while on Odin. And finally the firmware should be one of your device variant itself.
Hope it helps.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
did you manage to get anywhere with this? i had a similar type of issue, took a usb jig to get the system working again
So I was helping my friend root his phone, and ran into a few unsuccessful trials. Tried to flash recoveries from 2-3 sources, it didnt work but atleast he was able to start his phone normally. Now it shows the screen which says firmware error, try recovery from Samsung Kies. Problem is Kies wont even detect the phone.
Will the instructions in this guide fix his issue?

Yes I can still access the download mode. The part I can;t understand in this thread is : "Find a G2x USB and check if it puts in download mode while its off. If it doesn't" Once in the download mode screen, WHAT exactly indicate if it has been 'put in download mode' Is it the "Added" text in Odin?
Hi all,
Yes, i know there might be another topic on this, but trust me, ive looked, ive been looking for a solution for a full week now, and i know someone here can help me..
SO PLEASE HELP!!
I was running AOKP build6 on my SGS3 GT-I9300 International version, which performed excellent for more than a year, suddenly it became unstable, my phone would freeze completely and i had to reboot 10 times a day, it got worse, it just started rebooting out of nowhere
SO, i thought it a good idea to look for another ROM, and to be safe i tried flashing the stock ROM from the CMW recovery mode..
That did not work for some reason, it said Fail - so i went to try the PDA file option in Odin (newest version)
In Odin, i use the PDA button to load a md5/tar file, (Odin says 0COM/ connected, it can see my phone is connected) but when i start, it says Fail
-Phone will not start in recovery mode, it DOES go into Download mode, but any other way of trying to start in Download mode, it gives the following message:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies"
I have updated (reinstalled) the latest version of Kies, but Kies cannot connect to my phone (while Odin does)
It just keeps "Connecting" but does not connect, i tried all options in Kies "connection problems" (mine is in dutch) but it just will not connect
I am almost sure i unticked the box for USB Debugging, / so USB Debugging mode is OFF (im pretty sure)
Can this be the reason why Kies does not connect?
Am i completely scr*wed now?
I tried the firmware on another topic here, but in Odin it just says FAIL
I think you would call this HARD BRICKED??
i can still boot into Download mode, but is that enough? cause USB Debugging is OFF and Kies does not find my phone
Is it neccesary to replace my mainboard perhaps? I feel i have no luck trying to push firmware whatsoever...\
This hurts (since my backup phone is a slow unrooted S1
PLEASE PLEASE some help ?? ?
Sounds like either partial sds (product name blank in download mode) or a hard brick.
Lots of other identical threads, if you've read them then you already know there is no easy solution.
Use "firmware update and initialization" option in kies, under tools.
Hello , I use Galaxy Tab 4 , SM-T235
and it suddenly started getting slower , I did not use any kind of rooting , I restarted my device and now it stuck to Samsung Logo
I tried to use Odin to put a new ROM or firmware or whatever it is, but Odin says FAILED , after that when I restart my Tab , it shows " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue , please select recovery mode in Kies and try again "
so now the only thing I can do is going to download mode , I tried using Kies but it shows connecting and it takes forever for connecting but it never connects and it never shows any error, when I go to Tools > Emergency firmware recovery , it asks for recovery code , and I have no idea what's that , I tried many times with Odin , but it keeps failing , I changed the USB cable and used other USB ports and other Odin versions and it keeps showing FAILED .
So I appreciate it if anyone helps me !
