Hi,
Can someone make clear to me as a noobie what are the differences between "cores" of the ROMs?
I see there are most favourite ones like "XWLP9" and "AOKP" - what are the differences between them? I see AOKP has more updates from kernel and maybe some other things in addons? Besides XWLP9 seems to me more stable but I only observe rom peoples comments and replys so can someone tell me which ROM core I should be focused on when choosing ROM? Some advices, experiences what you have with them - ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES maybe or something ... I see there are roms like these two from what I want to choose:

Google is your friend.
XWLP9 is the latest stock/official ROM version from Samsung for the SGS2 (GT-I9100).
So, these kind of ROMs are based on Samsung stock ROMs ... with some customizations (e.g. rooted, some removed bloatware, some custom themes/mods, etc.).
The other kind of custom ROMs have AOSP (Android open source project) or ASKP (Android open kang project).
So, they are either on pure Google Android OS or Linux. Usually there is a team of developers who share their parts/versions in binaries and as source code.
The kernel is kind of "core" of the firmware.
Every ROM contains its own kernel, as this is a basic part of the firmware ... and the phone can't work without it.
You can also flash other (custom) kernels on a ROM.
But not every kernel is compatible with every ROM.
OK thank you I read about these two a lot i needed some experienced opinion and clearing it up for me.
What I basically needed was opinions about these two versions from experienced users. If non oficial and trully open made ROM is better and in what ways or is it better to stay on oficial ones etc. This is what i wanted most from this thread ...
hi
i tried win 7(nand), and android 2.3.5 and few more(sd) on my hd2.Had some battery power issue with win 7 and android ROM's. i liked android,But i always miss that HTC Sence (weather Widget). so i went back into win 6.5.
i saw some good looking ROM on page..... HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Development..... many of them even have htc sense weather widget... the one I like most..
now my question is, why I should use these ROM. they are pretty much like original ROM, and what is the diff. between them and original ROM.
why should i go 4 these Rom,instead of original ROM.?? is there a very big diff. and what??. Many question in my mind, but don't have any answer, if some of you can explain it to people like me, its very help full for me and other people..
thanx in advance..........
The Problem is that there is a lot of software on the stock ROMs we do not need. On custom Roms this software is removed. In the stock Roms there are also some cool features disabled (Camera modes, 567mb Ram...) and the devs of the custom roms are using a better compression and other tools to make the rom faster.
Many reasons to use them such as:
Better support for bugs & personal preferences
Removing of network software & limitations
Newer firmware/software such as WM6.5.3 & camera app ect are only available via custom ROM.
NRG rom transferred my device & further setup by myself of WM6.5.3 based ROM has made a very practical & elegant platform far better than Android unless gaming is a priority.

Hello,
I came here desperate for answers that could solve my problem with "M-signature" not working on custom (not SAM-based) ROMs.
"M-signature" (aka "Mobile ID") is a way to connect to bank via phone (you get a special personal SIM card, you go to your e-banking site, enter your phone number, get a pop-up message on phone screen (see attached), enter PIN on the phone and voila - connected into e-bank).
This "M-signature" works on Stock Rom, also on Samsung based ROMs: null_ ROM v25, NeatROM EMC2, UltimaRom v11, but doesn't work with AOSP (Slim Bean, Dragon SlimBean), AOPK/CM (Pac-man), MIUI (_miui.polymorph_)...
Problem is I love Slim Bean or Pac-man and can't really get used to sam-based (they're ugly, i find them slower, battery not appealing, etc.) - could I find a way to make that "M-signature" work on AOSP/AOPK/CM ROMs??
Biggest thanks in advance.

It shouldn't act like that, android app should be compatible with everything running an android, not only samsung. Unless it's dedicated only to GT-I9300.
I know this won't solve your issue but there are plenty of samsung-based roms with really cool aosp themes, bunch of tweaks and really well made. I don't want to recommend my own work but take a look if you wish, perfect example of stock rom with non-stock look.

Thnx JustArchi for answer (at least somebody wrote smth ).
That is not an app - it's a SIM card "feature" (a special, associated with my personal info (from my passport) SIM card which, I guess initiates those "pop-up messages").
It works this way: you go to www.example-mybank.com, enter there my ID and phone number, then (i guess) the special SIM card pushes a message "do you want to connect" (and shows control code to be sure it's your connection), enter your special PIN, and SIM card gives command to my bank "OK, let him in, it's really <Evaldino>" and the e-bank opens up for me
So, I guess it's something with "SIM services" (don't know how to call them - I'm a noob user), which work only on Stock or Sam-based ROMs, so perhaps CM/AOSP/MIUI lack a "module" or smth for these "SIM services" to work...
Also, this M-signature works on all smart devices (not only Samsung, not only Android, also on iOS, maybe even WinOS).
I see no other option as to try those SAM-based (though not really happy about that), so I'll definetely look into your ROM (I like 240DPI, circular battery, if only 4x4 pattern lock for locking screen), because for ex. on ReVolt (Sam-based, yes?) "m-signature" doesn't work (though I kind of liked this ROM)..
To be honest I'm surprised it works at all on a rooted device bearing in mind security etc....many banking apps/features won't work, especially with insecure kernel....I guess for a good reason...although not being particularly tech I wouldn't like to even attempt to explain why!
Please mind you that it may work on AOSP like the nexus builds but not work on CM based roms as they change ALOT of the AOSP code. That includes alot of the security protocols.

You have a point here.. didn'nt even think about that.. However, I'm not very "paranoid" and I don't think it's very insecure (to my little android security understanding)

But I tried my beloved Slim Bean (AOSP based, right?) - not working.. maybe it's "too much changed" AOSP? What i9300 ROM is "purest" AOSP - I'll try?

There are no pure aosp roms for most devices. They all use something from CM. Be it kernel or some of the coding as aosp only supports the nexus line as a base. Everything else is a fork.

So, how did you solved this problem, if you did? I wonder if this problem we are facing is only applicable in Lithuania as I can't even google some more sources on this issue...

There is no way to solve it. It will not work on AOSP based roms.

Actually I just flashed this one [ROM][Mar 17] Jellybean 4.2.2 for Endeavoru AOSP Build [Kernel 3.1.10] [JDQ39] #19 and at last it works! Will try to use this ROM for some time to be sure everything works, but it at least the biggest problem is solved.
By the way, I forgot to mention in my first post, I'm on HTC One X (International version with Tegra), but hope there is a workaround for SIII too.
For Samsung Galaxy Mini there is AOSP ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413108)
Hi,
I work in the security and privacy field and would like to start development of a new lightweight ROM with strong security and privacy controls but to be honest I don't have a clue where to start. I am experienced in flashing ROMs onto Android devices (currently have CM on my Nexus 4 and Galaxy Tab 2 as well as Beanstalk on my old HTC Desire Bravo) but have not yet built a custom ROM.
Ideally I would like to build the lightest possible ROM for HTC Desire (as this is my device for experimenting) but there are a number of features/restrictions I would like to include.
I see a lot of ROMs on this site (which I am sure are very good) and some generic guides on how to build ROMs but I need some more specific information. I need to know how to build a kernel which disables access to certain things (such as regular voice calling - this ROM should only permit VOIP calls) - how to strip out all the apps and services I don't want or need, how to include the apps I want installed by default (such as droidwall) and I have yet to come across such a resource.
Ideally I would like to strip the ROM down to the bare minimum required to allow a functioning device with data connectivity and then build it back up with the functionality I need.
Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks from Germany
Can anyone please suggest me a great ROM for i9100?
I used cyanogenmod 12.1 for a while but it still have some problems and ambient display didn't work.
I'm looking for a stable one with regular updates and possibly with ambient display feature.
Thanks in advance.
I'm sorry but these types of threads aren't allowed on XDA. If you wish to find a good ROM you need to try them out and find which one is best for you. One persons favourite rom may be someone elses least favourite.
Please try out some ROMs for yourself and decide.
I just wanted simple advices, apologies.
We'll let you off with this one since you are still a new member, I personally recommend Slimsaber 4.4.4 by Fusionjack for updated and stable rom. You can also use Cyanogenmod 11, since these are the only 2 kitkat roms I know that have been patched for the stagefright bug. I can not input on whether you would call them 'great' or 'best' roms , because it is just subjective (and it is against XDA rules too, as we shouldn't create bias in the development community).
And if you guessed it, I didn't recommend any Lollipop ROMs, this is because I still believe they haven't matured enough yet for our device whereas Kitkat has had a while to stabilize.
