So I was wondering why I couldn't do data and voice on Spark vs regular LTE. Found out that Spark isn't SVLTE. I thought Spark was a upgrade. Not a downgrade. My old S3 can do data and voice and still get the same download speeds. What a rip. Still love my G3 though.

That's because that phone had discreet radios. It used on to call and the other for data. None of the new phones do that, although their will eventually be a voice over LTE protocol. Spark has never been a technology whose main purpose was VoLTE, it's job is increased bandwidth and much faster download and upload speeds.

As Spaniard85 said, we have only 1 radio. 2 Radios are needed to be connected to LTE and CDMA at the same time. Sprint is taking their time to do VoLTE in a way that is compatible with the rest of the world. So either they do things the way they are and you miss out on voice and data at the same time, or you use battery faster with 2 radios on all the time, or Sprint does a half-a** job with VoLTE and have to redo everything 2 years from now.
Just as in buying a cellphone, most decisions made by the mobile companies are compromises.
Tell you what. I'm not seeing much of a speed difference here in Orlando between LTE and Spark. But then again. Our Spark Tower is in Melbourne. Which is about 85 miles away. Makes no sense why sprint would put the tower there and not right in the metro area.

What band is the spark tower? 25, 26, or 41? If you are 9n spark and 25 it is exactly the same as LTE on 25. You may see an advantage on 41 due to fewer connections, same as 26, though the true advantage for 26 is building penetration.
How do I find that out?

You would have to use a program like LTE Discovery to see, band 25 is 1900, 26 is 800, and 41 is 2500. The tower uses 25/41 or 25/26/41 to be called spark. Your phone can only connect to one band at a time, so if the tower is 25/41 and 41 is overloaded/to far away/or bad Signal to noise ratio you will be on band 25, which will be the same as normal LTE.
Basically spark is a way to add spectrum for LTE without using continuous bands, it works but is not as seamless as if Sprint had more spectrum in one band. The advantage is that 800mhz is great for distance/penetration but is also harder to get and more expensive.

It's not just the G3. None of Sprint's Spark capable phones support simultaneous voice and data.

So, we've all seen Big Red's LTE capabilities and it's extremely impressive. Anybody care to speculate on what Sprint's LTE will be like, considering the much higher frequency it will initially be running on? Think about penetration (no homo), range, speed, and the never-ending rumor of potential bandwidth caps/throttling.
Speed, no clue. Penetration obviously won't be anywhere near as good until they get it on the iden frequency. 1900 seems only a pinch less sucky than Clear's current frequency to me.
If I understand right the iden frequency is 800mhz? I thought sprint was only going to use this for voice calls?

The penetration will be the same as 3g as the 1900 is what it uses in most places not as good as 800 but alot better than 2500

Sprint had commitments for iden till 2012, this year, they can shut off the nextel iden network and roll out LTE on the 800mhz frequency this year and likely will do so with that new hybrid box they have been working on. This won't go in all at once, they will roll it out in stages by city and will likely take two years to get it mostly out and another 5+ to hit 95% of market coverage converted.

From what I was told, Sprint is building boxes that can push LTE and CDMA on 800 and 1900. How Sprint actually allocates the bandwidth I have no clue but it looks like they are leaving it open for any combination of the two, my guess would be that it depends on load.

From what I was told its going to be dependent on the tower location what freq will be used ... In Areas where towers are closer like major metro areas they will use 1900 in more rural areas the will use 800 because the signal will travel further and you can cover more with less towers...but the hardware is going to have all the same in every tower....as redundant backup also....

Signal wise it should be roughly the same but from what some of the LTE testing has shown is that the performance degrades much more with LTE than it does with EVDO over the signal.

Actually, when it comes to metro areas, places like a big city with a large down town district, 800mzh overlay with the 1.9 is the ultimate solution.
800 will penetrate deeper into the buildings and overall give a better in building coverage. So densly populated areas would be a great candidate for both 800mhz and 1.9mhz.
Also there is only so much spectrum that each carrier owns in a given location. So if loading is an issue, they can offload some of the usage to the 800mhz spectrum if or when necessary.

was never anything but a rumor at the least. mainly b/c of the fact that the phones supported it.
Sprint will be doing do-advanced though more likely as they have at least talked about that.

Sprint has very little Spectrum in 800MHz compared to the others.....If I were to guess any off loading will be to Clears 2.5GHz which is supposed to have over 5k sites up by next June if i remember correctly...
MOST off loading will be from 3G to 4G more than anything though....hence the smith mirco deal they signed...
Simple question: why is Sprint starting to roll out one spectrum of LTE now, and then changing it to a different one later (2013 and on)? Why not start off with the superior one that penetrates walls better to begin with? Any advantages to the frequency currently being built up?

They're starting on 1900 then adding 800 not replacing 1900. Both will be used LTE in 2013. Also they can't use 800 till Iden is off it. IDEN on 800 won't be dead till 2013. Sprint is decommissioning iden towers now in preparation for the shutdown. They are trying to migrate people over to sprint direct connect which uses the cdma network for direct connect.

okay, this will be fun to try and explain. first of all, my source is this:

Data is sent through wavelengths across different frequencies. Basically, the higher the frequency the higher the capacity and the lower the frequency the higher the coverage.
Sprint's WiMax runs on 2500 MHz, which explains the crappy coverage. Verizon has great LTE coverage because it runs on 700 MHz. The reason Sprint went with the higher frequency was probably to meet the demands of an "unlimited data" community because it would have a much much greater capacity than the 700 MHz spectrum Verizons running. This is also why cell providers with much better coverage (ones near 1000 MHz) have to throttle so hard and limit the amount of data usage: because they have much lower capacities (bandwidth) to share with their consumers in those frequencies.
Of course, cell companies dont only use one band of the spectrum. They send it across one low and one high to accomodate both capacity and coverage (i believe Verizon uses 700 and 1400 MHz). What david279 said is correct, Sprint will use both 800 and 1900 MHz eventually, so its gonna have a great LTE network.
So to answer the original question, Sprint was probably confident to launch the 1900 MHz frequency by itself because it is a good medium. 700 and 2500 MHz are at the ends of the spectrum. The best speed results would be more towards the middle. Instead of having great coverage and LTE speeds as low as 1gb/s with the 800 MHz frequency, or poor coverage with WiMax speeds of ~3gb/s (about what i've gotten) with the 2500 MHz frequency, Sprint's settling with good coverage with LTE speeds of Xgb/s (higher than 3, for sure) with the 1900 MHz frequency with coverage later to be improved once the 800 MHz frequency is included
So be ready in 2014 to buy the EVO 4G LTE+, since our phones can't pick up the 800.

On top of that Clearwire will be doing TD-LTE on 2500, which will have international roaming compadibility in europe, and yes Sprint did sign a deal with clearwire so they can use that band as well for their customers.

1400 MHz is allocated for WMTS (Wireless Medical Telemetry) as primary user, secondary is non-medical telemetry. 1400 MHz was military until 1999 when it was "sold off" to the highest bidder.

No LTE roaming? Does that mean the EVO 4G LTE can't make or receive roaming calls, or just that it won't use the LTE network for them?
While I'm asking newbie questions, I gather the switch to LTE doesn't make Sprint phones (except the iPhone & one Motorola phone) usable in foreign countries, even countries with LTE networks. Is there any way to make it work overseas (without major surgery)?.
I'm probably going to get this phone when I upgrade, but it would be nice to be able to use it when I travel. International functionality is the only reason I'm still slightly tempted by the iPhone. Well, that and the boffo camera software on the iPhone.

only the lte is limited to the sprint network. you can still use the phone in countries that use the same cdma network as sprint. plug in the country you'll be going to in that link - if it says cdma, you're probably ok. But if international roaming is important to you, this probaly isn't the phone to get (depending on where you go, anyway).
CDMA HSDPA and LTE
How can ATT use LTE Band V2,17,4 Etc. which is 700, 1700, 1900 if other carriers are using those bands. I don't see anybody updating the Wikipedia from day to day with who has what. I see that the Chinese manufacturers are not producing phones for the US carriers except for a few high end phones like the Oneplus One. Is something going on that only Samsung seems to care about, producing a phone with 6 Bands or are the manufactures just waiting for the dust to settle? Don't you agree that a user who buys their phone wants to be able to switch carriers if they move, allowing for more freedom, or what ever reason, should have a phone that handles multiple frequencies. Most of the newer models coming out of china are set for TD SCDMA in their county only and have eliminated WCDMA altogether in those phones. Shopping around is much more difficult because allot of these vendors say little about signal compatibility on the web sites selling these phones.

yes, its done automatically, but you need to be in an area that have band 41.
To check goto the sprint coverage map, zoom pretty much all the way in, and see if the area have "Spark Turbo" from S4GRU Spark turbo are B41 with upgraded backhaul, you maybe able to get B41 in none Turbo (can be B41 without upgraded backhaul) but in my experience I have not seen B41 in none turbo area.
if you need to see what Turbo area looks like on the coverage map, check out downtown chicago zoomed in
btw HTC one max reception is not that great, and pretty much if you are in a building away from the window you won't be able to get B41 (single family house maybe ok depending on how far you are from the tower)

I will order the z5c soon and have accounts with both Tmobile and AT&T. Should I hook it up on AT&T because of missing Tmobile bands? Are there any missing at&t bands? Buying the UK version from either Handtec or Clove. Please advise if anyone knows. Thanks

The E5823 model supports all of T-Mobile USA's LTE bands 2, 4, and 12. Band 12 (Extended Range 700Mhz) is questionable though. That particular band doesn't seem to be fully supported yet as Sony would need to get the phone validated on T-Mobile's network. Given that there's no USA model, it's unclear if this will ever happen.
That said, using the LTE Discovery app, I have seen my Z5c jump onto Band 12 if low coverage areas. When I had 4G enabled, band 12 didn't seem to work. When I was in HSPA+ mode, band 12 seemed to work.

That's no good. I was thinking of getting this to test band 12 on tmobile. I currently use att, verizon, and testing tmobile. I already have z3c on att and thought I'd try the z5c for band 12 and put on att when/if i drop tmobile.
That really only leaves m9 or iPhone 6s for my options as i don't really want a gs6
Edit: I also noticed that it does not support bands 29/30. I believe att will soon be using b30. Probably not a big deal for a while.
This phone also does not appear to support WiFi calling for tmobile USA if that's important to you.

Not sure where the lack of band 12 misinformation is coming from but I am in a Band 12 area right now and my z5c works great with it - confirmed on LTE discovery Android app.
Band 12 works fine. Sadly the 3 most important innovations, wifi calling, VoLTE and HD voice, do not and it is not likely they ever will

This is what makes me sad. VoLTE support for areas where T-Mobile has only B12 would be great for when I travel into those areas, like northern Michigan (Chicago area native here). The Z5C would be great for most places I go, but I know I wouldn't get VoLTE calling in some areas.

What market are you in? I'm most concerned/interested in what the Z5 and Z5C does if you're in a B12 only coverage for T-Mobile and you try to make a call. Does the phone roam then to another carrier or just not make a call?

I was at walt disney world two weeks ago and picked up band 12 at the art of animation resort lobby and speedtest was logging 65 mbps. Unfortunately that was the only place I was grabbing band 12. No service in any of our rooms and the park in general sucks if you are a tmobile or sprint customer. One or two bars of band 4 lte outdoors if I was lucky. But for whatever reason the hotel lobby had great band 12 reception. I have been generally displeased with tmobile coverage. Their marketing ads do not match up to my lackluster experience both with this phone or my (supported) Nexus 6. Ive been thinking of switching to ATT. Everywhere we go my wifes ATT iphone has LTE coverage while im lucky to make calls. Lol

I had the exact same experience this summer - got so jealous of my wife having signal that I joined AT&T. I was happy for about 3 months, getting signal everywhere before I realized that the data speeds are pretty mediocre. Plus, their prices for capped data are ridiculous! It cost me an additional $45 when I went over my cap by 3 gigs. I'm tempted to switch back now, but T-mobile jacked up their pricing for unlimited data since I left. 2 lines with Unlimited Data used to be $100. Now it's $140. Not sure if I can justify that price increase, though it's still a better deal than AT&T's limited data plans. I live in a major city, so AT&T and T-Mobile both have excellent coverage here. I spend 98% of my time here, so I should be satisfied if I can't get a signal the other 2% of the time, right?

Not me. But they havent gone live with band 12 in my area yet either according to tech support. Band 4 sucks in my area, same with my Nexus 6 which does support volte. On the z5 right now I stick it to hspa+ which works fine and has less battery drain when Im at home since I mostly use Wifi anyway. Whether or not the z5 supports volte on tmo usa I dont know. Ive seen comments about sony having to certify that with tmo. I just want better band 12 data penetration at this point. Tmo even sent me their cell repeater boxes which didnt help at all since they prefer band 4.
I posted this question on Reddit, and people confirmed that B12 is data only. No VoLTE and I think HD calling works still.
So band 12 has been officially launched in most of my areas. Will AT&T be a better option for full service? Or will 700mhz on band 17att also be a problem?

How do you tell, I have T-Mobile. And get data, but came from Sprint, so little rusty on all GSM stuff.

How do you tell what band you're on? There's a free app you can download called LTE Discovery which should show you which one you're on.
I wish b12 was fully operational on this phone so i can test it out. from what I'm finding, it will not until sony gets it validated with tmobile.
There are very limited phones that currently support b12 for tmobile. Especially phones of interest to me. Hopefully this will change fairly soon
Here in Portland, OR, I've only seen band 4 LTE on my z5c so far. I know band 12 has been deployed here some time ago, so it appears I'm not able to pick it up.
I finally saw my phone pick up band 12 in an area that normally is so bad that only edge would work intermittently in prior years. But it was still a weak band 12 signal. The tower was 4 miles away. Download speeds were comparable to a T1 circuit. Blah! At home it never picks up band 12 and weak enough band 4 to where I leave it on hspa and wifi all day. I live in the Dallas area but tech support said the tower closest to my home is listed in chronic issues state whatever that means. The aws frequencies at my house has been horrible for years but this phone gets great hspa+ ever since they re farmed the area and the z5c only supports the pcs band for 3g. TMO coverage in my area is hit or miss. I don't care what their tv ads say. I have two other devices that get similar results, one being the moto nexus 6.
Do you have a screenshot of LTE discovery? I doubt it was 12.

No screenshots for me but I was at the same location in the D/FW area for four hours and LTE discovery said band 12 the whole time. Also I know certain areas of downtown Dallas like at the American Airlines Center are band 12.
That doesn't mean it DOESN'T have band 4 though. Would be great if you could try and capture shots of that please.

I can 100% confirm there is no HD Voice or VoLTE and I'm on 32.0.A.6.200. Pretty big bummer if you ask me. Not sure on Band 12 yet as it is not where I am now but highly doubt it works.
So which model should I buy if I have t-mobile?

Are you on tmobile? I'm in the same area on the Z5c and can't get my mms to work. What's your apn look like?

Yes I am a tmobile customer and I just set the device to download the apn from the settings. I did change the protocol to ipv4 only though. Ipv4/ipv6 also worked but I vaguely remember the default being ipv6 only. Mms has always worked fine for me. I use the google messenger app, not the default sony.
