Some folks asked about if it's possible to use it as a stand alone device without the need of activating it in the first place with a Samsung device. It is! (I read that easter egg trick somewhere else in XDA for the Gear 2, it works as well for Gear S)
1. Jump to the screen, where it's visible for Samsung Devices in activation process. You'll see the unique name of your Gear S and a small Watch Icon on the left of the name
2. Tap around 25-30 times on the Watch Icon
3. Now a short message appears saying something about bluetooth. Just ignore it, it will vanish after a few seconds
4. Now tap again on the watch icon but this time leave your finger on the screen for around 5 seconds
5. Voilà, your Gear S is now activated, you can't use it as a remote Smartwatch but as a phone watch at least.
Hope, someone figures out how to pair it with Tab S soon since this is my phone
So, i hope it pairs with my LG G2 without much hassle? Remote sharing probably wont work because it is using Samsung account?
What about all other functions, like notifications, call forwarding etc? Is i even possible to reply on your phone and send via Gear S for messages

If the Steps above don't work buy the watch in the store and have the store pair/ or you to pair it with the display Model of the Note 4 (A guy in the Gear S thread has an iphone and this worked for him) Everything should work as a regular phone besides downloading apps (that needs to connect to the gear manager) and updates ( needs gear manager) Search the Gear 2 thread (Pair with non-Samsung phone works the same for our watch) Tizen is the OS and it should all work the same

Just tried this trick out and I'm happy to say it works perfectly. I have my gear s connected to my iPhone right now. You can receive and place calls directly from the watch.

:good::good::highfive: that's awesome you hear this ppl it works with non Samsung devices
The Op method worked. Now how do i update and connect with my LG G2? In my phone it just says connecting
I connected Gear S to Kies and it says it already has the latest FW
So text messages notifications do not work. That's all I was able to test.
i have an htc m8 .. does this mean i won't get text message notifications either??
I dont think it will.
Gear Manager needs to forward the text notification to your Gear S from your phone.
You might be able to do text if you use at&t messages as a default messaging app try that.
Amazing. This worked. THANK YOU!
Questions:
1) Bluetooth between iPhone and Gear S keeps dropping. How do you fix this?
2) Can you pair the device with more than 1 device? So for example, it's now paired with my 6 Plus. Can add a Galaxy to it so I can add apps? Seems to always factory reset the device.
3) I know text doesn't work but can we use Calendars or Email somehow?

Regarding the question 2:
I have a Galaxy Note 2 and an Iphone. My Iphone is my main phone.
Currently, i successful paired my iphone without the factory reseting. To do that: first i rooted my Gear S. After i use the sdb tool (tizen wearable sdk):
./sdb root on
./sdb shell
and then
cd /var/lib/bluetooth
and i delete the directory with a lot of number (the bt adress of the gear) . Example rm -r C4:42:02:19:99:8D
After i can paired with the iphone without the factory reset.
The problem is i have to do the same thing to reconnect the Galaxy Note 2.
To be continued....

Hold on ... you're deleting the bluetooth address for the Gear?
And how are you not getting this:
No, i don't think that. This directory contains some bluetooth information relating the local (Gear S) address. When i (re)pair it, the directory becomes.
In fact, there is a sub directory with paired bt adresss containing some others informations. To be proper, i deleted the local directory: there is no memory reset, no app lost. I tried to merge the sub directory (the iphone and note 2 bt adress directory), but for the moment it's not concluant.
No, the pairing is sucessfully and i can make a phone call from the Gear S throw the Iphone. For an incoming call , it's another thing: the Gear S rings (but , it's configured in vibration model !), but there is no sound unlike i transferred the call to the iphone and after to the Gear S (not cool !).

Yes, it's a Gear S SM-R750.

I've first connected the Gear fit to my Note and it work well but the problem began when I want to use it with my wife's S4 Activ. Even after reseting the Gear fit, it will never delete the link with the Note 3 and I'm not able to connect the Gear to the S4,
After each connection test, the gear manager is deleted from the Sç and I must download it again to thave the same problem.
Any other way to reset the gear than the rest button at the end of the menu?
The reset button should delete the link with Note but it won't work and after restting the gear all stuff downloaded in from the note 3 is still here and ther's no connection possible with the S4 and certainly with other's devices.
Any help welcome
Thanks to have put the link to the doc on the site, unavailable on samsung sites (Gear lite not listed to)

The Gear S cannot perform as a wifi hotspot, and I wouldn't suggest it even if it could. Think of it as a shrunken down featurephone of sorts, but with an incredibly small battery.
However, if you are content to use the tab with wifi only, then it can be a good pair.
I had the gear 2 and the tab s. I had the gear manager on the tab and it worked for setup. If you are interested in just setting up the gear you can go this route. You just won't have the connection to your note 4.
Ok I see thanks I have the Tab S LTE and I have a gear 2 I use them together as well I'm trying to eliminate the need for an extra line with the gear S. I would answer the calls and call from the gear S and use my tablet I want the Note 4 to stay connected to the gear 2 unless I can add both the gear 2 and gear S on the note 4. The tablet is the same monthly price as the gear S
unable to pair with tab s
I was unable to pair my gear s with my tab s lte.
Downloaded gear manager, but it was unable to find device.
It did show up under Bluetooth devices, but when I tried to pair that way, it would open up gear manager with an error message saying that it was not compatible with this mobile device or software needed to be updated. As far as I know my device is fully updated.
Looks like I will need a Samsung phone.

All I did to pair to Tab3 was install latest GearManager, bluetooth pair both devices normally...the Gear S automatically began the reset process on recognizing the Tab3 pairing request.

I have exactly the same situation here in Turkey, a gear s and a tab s , which connect very poorly and I can not update the gear manager . It tells me that it is not compatible with the tablet anymore. Did you manage to get a solution from samsung Switzerland?
I have my Gear S watch - love it! My Note II finally gave out so I replaced it with the Samsung Note Pro 4G (eBay $350)! Gear Manager is found in Google play but it says that it's not compatible with my device. I found a paid app called Gear Manager for all devices but I'm hesitant to go with this... I've read that some have been able to install Gear Manager on a tablet. How???
Update on November 10th: With new Gear Manager Update (10. November) now finally it works and connects, thank you Samsung
I bought the Gear S yesterday and wanted to pair it with my Tab S 8.4 (T705). Unfortunately it is not possible, I feat it only works with mobile phones? (even the Tab S is also a mobile phone). Anyone know a promising solution? Thanks!
+1 I d like to know as well I have the gear 2 for now but would like to pair gear S and tab S LTE

Yes I tried that, at least I changed the Model Number in build.prop (because I don't have to instal Samsung Services because it is a Samsung device). I tried that. I see the Gear S as a bluetooth device in settings but when I want to pair, it tells me, that the software ist not compatible. In Gear Manager, I don't find any device. Samsung Switzerland told me, that it is NOT compatible with Tab S at this moment, very disappointing. Hope for a fix, when Gear S is available worldwide. Meanwhile at least, I figured out, that the easter egg trick from Gear 2 (Press 25 Times screen when it wants to pair) works as well on Gear S, so you can use it as a phone wihtout pairing it to a Samsung device.

Hi Cyman,
I have just bought the Gear S from Digitec, probably you bought from the same store.
Very disappointed that it needs a Galaxy smartphone (and not even all of them are actually compatible) for the sync with the Gear Manager app, I found it out later once I got home since the package said that it needs only an Android 4.3 with 1.5 GB of RAM minimum.
I have a Tab 3, also trying to pair: I could install all the versions from XDA but without succeeding so far.
I will let you know.

After much prodding, Samsung admitted that neither of their tablets work with the Gear S officially. It's stupid, and the reason why I bought and am now returning my Tab.
Workarounds like the ones for non-Samsung devices are your only option.
All you can do is raise awareness on social media and hope they'll push updates to fix this.
you can't connect it with tablets as it will make you reset the watch over and over again. It is very annoying, I was going to connect it to my computer via bluetooth and use it as a microphone when i found out.
I was able to get 90% functionality by editing my build.prop on the Tab S. Of course this means you have to root the Tab S. I set the model to SM-N910A, which is an AT&T Note 4. I also had to change the characteristic to phone instead of tablet. Next I reset the Gear to factory and was able to pair it with Gear Manager. Email works perfectly and all apps seem to work. But, call forwarding and text do not work. I can use the Google SMS app if I add it to the notification in Gear manager but this does not provide for responding directly from the Gear S.
This is better than just Bluetooth connectivity and I am still working on how to get the remaining functions working. Also, I set the characteristic back to tablet after completely pairing to fix the force close when trying to get to the system settings menu on the Tab S. It doesn't seem to have any I'll effect of the Gear S but it is needed during the initial pairing with Gear Manager.

How did you get the build prop edits to stick after a reboot. What Specific Edits did you use.
ro.product.model=SM-N910A (stock is SM-T705) and ro.build.characteristics=phone (stock is tablet)
I used build prop editor from Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor
You have to choose menu, edit then edit the lines above for the edits to survive a reboot. I also have call forwarding working after a call to AT&T. They reassigned my IMEI from my note 4 to this number and it started working.

It looked like it was work, it reformatted it then downloaded some stuff now it's stuck on connecting to gear.
Glad to hear it. Make sure you change the ro.build.characteristics back to tablet or you will have FCs opening settings.

After a couple of reboots and removing it from pair it finally finished the install
Yes, I saw that happen as well. Figured out to cancel the first Bluetooth request and try again.

It doesn't seem to have any I'll effect of the Gear S but it is needed during the initial pairing with Gear Manager.

stilll no hope , i can't even find the gear s in the gear manager apps... i'm using tab 3 7.0 so maybe different with tab S...
I don't know for sure what is going on for you, but it requires both build.prop edits mentioned, a reboot of the Tabs S after the edits and resetting the Gear S to factory. This is what it took for me. The model you input must be a Gear S supported device name.

Hey, I just got the LG G5 today. I've been using the Gear S for less than a year with my S6 Edge with no problems at all (after changing from the LG G Watch R, Samsung seemed to lock out the old watch with a software update).
I've been trying for the past few hours to set up my Gear S with the LG, but nothing's working. I've tried what seems to be the 2 most popular methods and neither worked. The closest I got was pairing the 2 via bluetooth in the Gear app, the watch said it needed to reboot and factory reset. But then nothing. Just stuck in an unending connecting loop.
The G5 is running Android 6, I've heard that the Gear S has some problems with that.
I don't need full functionality for the Gear S, just call and text notifications (it will do the calls via a normal BT connection but not texts). I use it as a music player as well, but since that isn't tied to the phone, I know I'll have that no matter what.
I've also heard about possibly being able to install Android Wear on the Gear S. Is that possible?
Can someone please help?

Sorry to tell you this, but gear s is locked down to only specific sammy devices. The best option for you is to flash the wear port from the development section. Then you can use it as a AW device... hope this helps

I did see the threads about flashing it to android wear, but if I do that can I still okay music out of my Gear S speakers?
Both my wife and I use it to listen to music work the need for an additional Downe speaker. If it can, then great.
