VS985 on Cricket Wireless - Verizon LG G3

So my wife and I are probably leaving Verizon for Cricket. Even with paying the ETF for both phones we'll save over $500 compared with staying with Verizon until our contact expires next fall.
Anyway, I'm not sure how this works with rooting/ROMing. Will I still be able to flash VS985 ROMs (currently using a stock, rooted 11C ROM)? Specifically, if/when AOSP ROMs come out can I run them, despite being designed for Verizon, and still connect to Cricket? I've never not been on Verizon's network, so this is all unfamiliar to me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. You just need to update your apn settings. Your phones are already unlocked.

I was hoping this would be the answer. I suspected it might be, so thanks for suggesting it might be, even if you're not 100% correct. Hopefully someone else can chime in with a definitive answer.

I know this isn't cricket, but I think it'll help you get closer to an answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/factory-unlocked-lte-t-mobile-t2828543
If t-mobile and straight talk work after apn settings change I guess cricket should work too.
Let us know if it works please. Saving $ is always a good thing

Thanks. I'll be sure to give it a try once we make the switch and update this thread with the results. Probably not until later this week.
EDIT: Looks like I'll be holding off on making a change for a bit. AT&T hasn't yet turned on LTE in my area - coverage is quite spotty (rural western Wisconsin). Perhaps in a couple months.

On my vs985 I use it with a Cricket pre-paid sim and after getting the settings right I get LTE and H+ (which is just as good usually), where available on Band4. Cricket is full-time throttled, though, but it is usually unnoticeable unless running a speed test.
You will still have a vs985 device though, so you will only be able to flash vs985 firmware.

Could you PM me the settings you are using? I am trying to use my Verizon LG G3 and I can only get H, and MMS is not working despite my using the same settings on my other cricket phones. Customer Service/Support is useless because they just keep telling me my phones are not compatible and that I need to buy their phones. I'd like to keep my G3's and use them. My Droid Turbo works excellent on Cricket, but not getting LTE in the Richmond, VA area. Thanks.

stuck
Just got a G3 on Sunday. The phone is amazing! However, mms does not work for me. I have HSPA and sms working but NO GO on mms. I am in the Wichita, KS market. Can you tell me if that could be part of the problem?

I have VZW LG G3 on Cricket and I get LTE on Android 4.4 but no LTE on Android 5.0, does anybody know why?

I just got this device, and following Cricket's BYOD APN settings...I am getting HSPA+ (no 4G LTE, as Verizon phones do not have AT&T's LTE compatible bands).
The problem I am having is with MMS. I am not able to recieve MMS.
I have tried and tested every option involved with the combinations of Network Modes: Global, LTE/CDMA, LTE/GSM/UMTS as well as their individual Network submode settings.
If anybody has any information please help. Thank you!

I was having the same problem with stock sms/mms so I switched to Textra. Make sure the apn settings for mms are set in the Textra app

Are you running the network in Global mode?

No lte/gsm

Free T-Mobile data

UPDATE: This worked well for a short time but now reverts back to the up sell page. My only guess is T-Mo caught on and shut us out; YMMV.
I searched the forum and didn't see this, although I may have missed it. Just wanted to share in case it hasn't been posted or for anyone that may not know.
[Disclaimer: I have no idea if this will inevitably result in a loss of service, so don't blame me if that happens! Proceed at your own risk.]
I recently got a T-Mo prepaid SIM to use with my unlocked i777, as AT&T's coverage where I work is basically nonexistent. I had a rep set me up with the $15/month unlimited text plan which I quickly realized has no web access included (not even pay per MB lol). This was confirmed by opening the browser and being greeted by a T-Mo upsell page.
Okay, so... after some digging around and trying different APN settings, I found a workaround:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username: TMobile.com 0000000000 (use your phone # in place of 0000000000)
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: Internet+MMS
After saving and selecting the new APN, I now have data! Confirmed this by loading multiple pages in the browser. It may be slow, but it's still nice to have available for the times when you really need it!
Cool trick, did you do any speed tests?
it would be edge (2g) speeds because this phones 3g and 4g (hspa) radios are built for att frequencies only, but att and T-Mobile share the same 2g frequency.
Still working internet is working internet. Good find.

No, I didn't even think about that at the time. As stated above, it'll only be Edge speeds. I'm not sure it would be any faster even if our phone supported the proper bands, since it's using the WAP APN meant for cheapo feature phones.
If data could be fix to use 3g I would go pick up a Sim and only use T-Mobile. Att keeps getting more and more expensive.

This might sound silly, but if anyone knows... 1.) Does there need to be a working Tmo card in the phone w/ that APN (vs. att card), 2.) Does it need to have recurring services or could any purchased prepaid Tmo card be swapped into the 777 in an emergency?
I ask b/c AT$T data services blow in my area and I currently have a network data block to avoid paying for said unusable services...I'm curious if this would work in an emergency on the road or if it's likely that Tmo data is as bad as AT$T's.

An (educated) guess tells me 1. Yes, you would need to have the T-Mo SIM in when using the APN. And 2. I would imagine so, since your phone number is used as the Username in the APN, and I'm sure their network identifies the request as either coming from an active/inactive account.

It's not only with AT&T. AT&T and T-mobile use different bands for 3g. Obviously TIM uses the same bands as AT&T.
Is this still working for anybody? All of a sudden I started getting the web2go error page.
And since upgrading to CM9, I don't even get that anymore. I get Unable to connect to the Internet. No edge logo up top or anything.

[Q] LGOG on T-Mobile: Is LTE functional for you?

Well, after looking at all the Nexus 5 hoopla the past few hours (they have some damned nice cases available from Spigen for that thing, wish the LGOG would have sparked that kind of interest, oh well) I figured I'd ask this question so, the poll above pretty much covers it.
If LTE is working for you I'd appreciate knowing it, and the setup you have with it working. A few of us that have the LGOG and had working LTE which suddenly just up and died on us are trying to figure out exactly why it suddenly just up and died on us, perhaps some more info in a thread geared towards it specifically might help.
Thanks...
For the record: I'm running the stock 4.1.2 build with the stock AT&T JB radio currently, using a T-Mobile $30/month plan and the LTE functionality worked fine the first day or so I got the LGOG just by adding the APN for it (fast.t-mobile.com) - I didn't have to do anything else, didn't even have to change anything network related: when I originally got this LGOG about 2 weeks ago all I did was add that APN and LTE worked as noted by the 4G/LTE icon on the status bar. After a day or so of using it the icon changed to the standard 4G icon and the LTE functionality never returned and still hasn't.
The vast majority of tmous users don't get lte on e970. Check att lte freqs vs tmo freqs in your area.
Sent from my LG Optimus G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
As I said in the post above, it DID work when I first got the LGOG about two weeks ago, and here in Vegas T-Mobile very much has their actual LTE service enabled (as noted, Las Vegas was the first city in the US where they "flipped the switch" so we technically had it before anybody else did). There are a number of other owners that have had it working when they first started using the T-Mobile SIM cards, but over random periods of time the LTE functionality just stops working, kaput, clear out of the blue and then we just can't seem to get it functional again.
It's not a T-Mobile issue because their coverage here in downtown Vegas where I happen to live blankets the area completely and again it DID work just fine, with two different (yet same series) T-Mobile SIM cards, but then it just stops working and I/we would like to work on a solution as to why it did or does work then it suddenly stops.
I don't really care about actually using it in most situations, I just care that it should work since the LGOG covers the frequencies where T-Mobile provides LTE service, that it did work for myself and others, and then for some unknown reason it stops working and I/we can't figure out the specific reason(s) for it to just stop.
Have you tried these APN settings?

T- Mobile largely gained LTE in the Vegas area by acquiring MetroPCS. Their LTE is on the CDMA spectrum and T- Mobile is broadcasting on gsm. That might be part of your problem. TMO is probably relying on the MPCS equipment in Vegas.
Sent from my LG Optimus G using xda app-developers app
Hadn't considered that, Jank4AU, but I did just try adding that APN info and still no success with LTE. As stated, it did work originally because within an hour of getting this LGOG I had installed Speedtest and ran some here where I live and I had varied results from 28 to 35-36 Mbps - since this phone is only capable of 21Mbps HSPA+, and not the 42Mbps aspect, and since it was clearly showing the 4G LTE icon on the status bar, I know it was working at least for a brief period of time and I know the hardware is capable of it.
It's funny in some respects because earlier when I tried that 4.4 AOSP that houstonn has created I noticed that the default APNs (whereas with the stock ROM I have no defaults at all) pulled from the SIM card are:
MetroPCS (fast.metropcs.com)
T-Mobile GPRS (no APN info set)
T-Mobile GPRS (fast.t-mobile.com)
Alas, no matter what I do it just won't enable LTE. When I bring up the available networks on the stock ROM (4.1.2) I get what's pictured as attached, so the phone most definitely can see the T-Mobile LTE network, but whenever I attempt to connect to it there will be a ~30 second delay with nothing happening, then it just reverts to HSPA.
This fiasco is baffling...

Yeah, they told you that it won't work on Metro PCS because the phone isn't listed as a compatible phone on the website (the HTC One is listed though). Of course ANY phone that is GSM and has 4G LTE will work on any GSM network with 4G LTE (as long as it uses the same frequency, and since Metro PCS is using AT&T's network, and the One X+ is an AT&T phone, it will work)
.
I already gone and purchased a MetroPCS sim card and when I receive it, I'll call the 888 number to activate service on their $60 plan (the three Metro PCS stores in my town haven't even opened yet). Fully unlimited 4G LTE speed on that plan. I'm tired of the 2.5GB limit that Straight Talk has.

Ok, I see the MCC and MNC aren't touched. The ones I was looking at through Google Search, the MNC was like 16 or 260. I was trying to create an APN with that change, and it wouldn't save an APN with the MNC at 16 or 260.

It definitely should work, if T-Mobile/MetroPCS has the 1700MHz band 4 for LTE active in your area.
T-Mobile uses 700MHz band 14 (starting '14Q4) and 1700MHz band 4 for LTE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_US#4G_LTE_upgrade
the One X+ uses 700MHz band 17, 1700/2100MHz band 4 for LTE http://www.phonearena.com/phones/HTC-One-X-LTE_id7376
Even if I can't get LTE working on this phone, I still have 3G (AKA HSPA+) that can get appreciable speeds, and I won't have data limits on the $60 plan like Straight Talk has. All you have to worry about is the 850 and 1900MHz bands for GSM and 1700MHz for UMTS (HSPA+)

Live chat just follows the script in front of them. They don't really know anything else besides that. You said you got 10/3 on this phone with MetroPCS, that's HSPA+ speeds (3G, or sometimes called 4G if its T-Mobile). Still pretty good, and I can handle that. I'll later on buy a Samsung phone from MetroPCS if I like Metro's service.

I have two SCH-I545, one on NC5 stock rooted, one on MDK running CM11 nightlies. I got a Cricket sim and service for a month to see if I could get everything going, and all but LTE is golden. It looks like all it takes is clearing data on the "Setup Wizard" app to get rid of the notification. I was hoping I could turn it off, but there may not be a need. Now all that remains is LTE.
Edit: I jumped the gun on that. The notification still comes up on reboot. Force stop gets rid of it, and probably freezing the "Setup Wizard" app (root required).
Any update on this?
Can LTE work on a Verizon S4?
What kind of speeds are you getting with HSPA+?
I am currently running Hyperdrive 18.1, would I have to flash back to NC5?

Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app
I learned that on both straight talk and cricket, lte will not work on Verizon phone.
I have all three sims and have been testing in an att phone and a verizon phone.
The att phone gets lte logo with both cricket and straight talk.
The cricket line caps at about 8 mbps which is really not lte despite it saying that at the top of the phone.
Straight talk goes up to 27 mbps at the same location. verizon gets 80 down.
cricket must cap the lte speeds.
So bottom line, if you want real lte speeds either stick with Verizon or get an att phone or unlocked phone and try straight talk.

I am pretty sure that LTE on this phone uses different bands than Cricket uses. So physically the phone is incapable of LTE on the cricket network.
When I set my phone to "Global" or "LTE/CDMA" mode, I get the "4G" icon on top of the screen... BUT... i cannot send text messages. (can recieve them thought!)
Test messages only works for "GSM / UMTS" mode. At that point i get "H" or "H+" on top of the screen.
I think the phone is programmed to display "4G" just because it's in LTE mode regardless of what the actual connection is.

I have verified in the store that my phone will work on the T-Mobile network. My question is has anyone (using a G3 on T-Mobile) had any luck with getting the Wifi Calling and texting working? I talked with online support and they said it should work but the store employees said I would need a T-Mobile device for this to work.
Online support was wrong, store employees are correct.
Only if you have a T-mobile G3 can you use their special Wifi Calling. The vs985 does not support it.
Alternatively, you can use the Hangouts dialer for wifi calling for free. I forward all my phone numbers into my Google Voice number, so all my phones ring if any of my numbers are called.
Also, I use almost no voice minutes anymore at all on any carrier since I have gotten all my contacts to switch to dialing my Google number.

mms should work if you have correct APN settings.
I also have VS985 on tmobile network. I set up the APN on the phone and everything works (LTE, txt, mms, etc..)
I am using VRZ stock ROM 4.4.2

I wonder if you can tell us the radio baseband version currently working on your vs985 and giving you LTE on T-Mobile ?
There have been reports that the original v10b and the v11c radios allow LTEon non-Verizon carriers, but that the v12b and higher radios (including the current v23c one) do not.

I have the NPZM-1.7834.1 which is the 12b version.

Kernel = 3.4.0-perf-g31d5612lge
build = KVT49L.VS98512B
Software = VS98512B
APN settings from t-mo (fast.t-mobile.com)
I am running my Verizon LG G3 on Tmobile.
upon entering my APN info everything works fine LTE, MMS, SMS, WEB etc.
Tmobile APN Setting are as followed

MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc

then save it select it and restart your phone and everything should be running fine.

So we have two reports that the v12b modem, the last KitKat radio, does support LTE on T-Mobile, at least. That is a relief !
Now we need someone to check it with the v23c radio !

Well I switched to T-Mobile and I had everything working running v23c radio (I think). My baseband is: VS985-MPSS.DI.2.0.1.c1.13-00053-M8974AAAAANPZM-1. My phone would switch from 3G to H and back often.
According to T-Mobile coverage map I have 4G at my house but I currently have a E symbol. Either their map is incorrect or something is not working quite right.
Also anyone know how to remove the unknown Sim icon in the status bar?

Thanks! I eventually figured it out on my own. I downgraded to 12b because of other Lollipop issues and my data is inconsistent. At work my Data is going from H to 4G LTE to 3G to E and I can hardly do anything data0wise on my phone. My coworkers T-Mobile Nexus 6 works great. Anyone know of anything I can try, short of getting a T-Mobile phone?
You might be in a T-Mobile band 2 LTE area while at work. The N6 is one of the only phones currently available that supports band 2 LTE, your vs985 doesn't and can't. Even the T-Mobile G3 variant won't.
If you can just barely reach a band4 T-Mobile tower at work, that would explain your LTE being intermittent. Might just be that T-Mobile LTE is on band 2 or, um, band 21 (?) in that area, neither of which are vs985 bands.

Were you receiving a good LTE coverage at your work before you updated your phone to Lollipop? I see too many complaints and issues with Lollipop so I restrained from upgrading from my kitkat with 12b.

Download LTE Discovery from Play Store and run it to see what LTE band you are connecting to. It also helps your phone to connect to LTE faster. T-mobile main LTE band is 4, and it is supported by VS985. It is normal to have 1 to 2 bars on 4G LTE, and if I am in the middle of the building, sometimes it will go down to H or E. It is not the fault of your phone. T-mobile is just not known for great coverage.
