I've never gotten one before.
Are all of them the same, i.e. if I buy one that's for an SGS2 it will still work on this device right? They're all just microUSB to HDMI I'm thinking. Cuz I see some cheap ones for like $7 and I'd rather just get that than spend like $30 on a "good" one that's the same exact ****.
brand means nothing on these. the only thing you need to know to use it is you will have to power the mhl adaptor with your micro usb cable
I've had mixed results with these adapters.
I ordered 2 different cheap adapters from ebay (2 because I read that some dont work with the note) The first one to arrive just didn't want to work tried everything but gave up on it. The second one also didn't work the first couple of times but then suddenly worked. It was ok for about 2 weeks of heavy use then it gave up on me aswel.
Now I have the original Samsung MHL adapter and works every time with no problems. So to answer your question - it's a game of luck unless you pay.
Anyone here using a tested and verified working mhl? I would love to get one myself too.
i was skeptical so i bought one off ebay for like 8 bucks... plugged it in the day i got it and was playing Tekken 3 on my TV via Galaxy note .... works pretty well. There may or may not be a little lag though... (might have been my tv)

yep +1 here, which mhl adapter (micro usb to hdmi) are you using? A link would be nice

It wasn't working at first but then i figured out you have to plug the power cord in then the hdmi in that order.

Its very crisp and clear. I'm kind of OCD about that stuff and so far I'm pleased with it
It's to be noted though, if you're playing a youtube video outside the web browser the annotations wont show up on the tv, nor will subtitles on a mkv file, unless the subtitles are hardcoded into the video itself.

Tyvm for the info. I will order it today. I just need to get something worth $10 worth, so I can have it shipped for free
Edit: I hope it also works for skyrocket.
Will this work with TF101. I have the standard HDMI cable laying around in my house and thought using this mini HDMI adaptor might work..
It will work, but I don't recommend that type since it puts a lot of stress on the connector and may cause it to fail earlier.
So which one do you recommend? There's some micro HDMI and some mini HDMI and there's type-d and so on.. kind of confuse!! Thanks!
I'm not into the super expensive type... a working one should be sufficient..
Use a cable that goes from the mini HDMI to the normal HDMI.

Do you have a picture of it? So I can buy the correct one..
The correct one should look just like a normal HDMI cable, except it would have a mini HDMI on one end.
What are some options to hook the phone to a TV.? HDMI RCA ...???
Hdmi mhl adapter. Make sure it's one with a power source made for note 2 or sgs3.

Well, I got it for 75 dollars but it was originally 100. I'd say if you use the phone for multi-media purposes (watch movies on standard TV), then get it. But I wouldn't just buy if you want to dock/charge it and nothing else. Personally, I use my dock to make my Note 2 a giant PC. I connect my mouse and keyboard to the USB slots on the dock and connect the dock to the TV so I can browse the internet and what not on a bigger screen. That to me is worth the money. You should get it! It does a lot!

Ah yes. That is exactly what i'd be doing is a pc like setup. I had a similar setup back in the early bionic days but that phone just didn't have the hardware to double as a desktop. Thinking the n2 will bring what it was missing. Appreciate the feedback!

You don't need a setting, you just plug it in/hook it up and after selecting the correct input on the TV it works automatically.

I have been using the MHL adapter that was purchased directly from Samsung for the Note 2. Oddly enough, since day 1 of me owning it, I have had the edges of the screen cut off from the display. I've checked every setting on my tv and nothing has fixed it.
Now here's the interesting part, every other phone I have tried to troubleshoot this issue with, (two sgs3's, an sgs4, I haven't found another note 2 to try it with) has worked perfectly, without changing any TV settings, and without the edges being cut off. So with that being said, I've been trying to figure out why my Note 2 is the only one that has this problem, to no avail.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I wouldn't know why only the note ii is doing that. With my note ii on different monitors or tvs (either) there is definitely variation in display. Some tvs you can't change the scan settings and will be stuck with the picture as is ( as far as I know-probably worth researching). Some you can change the setting and your all good or some monitors will display the whole image properly. Thats just my experience. I too would be Iinclined to have a more technical explination... i just havent sought one yet.
i have pc settings but since i dont have anything connected there i cant change them. i have tried it in 3 different tvs and played with the settings but nothing seems to work. i got to admit. its no big deal but in really bothers me for some reason. especially when it comes to the multi window tab...

I was under the impression that Note 3 supported MHL 2.0 but when I plug in the official HDTV adapter from Samsung (model number ET-H10FAUWEGWW) I still need to also use a USB charger to get it to show through the HDMI input on my TV?
If I don't I get a continual on-screen message on the phone "HDMI cable connected/disconnected" flashing/cycling until I plug-in the Micro USB charger cable on the side of the HDTV adapter.
Any thoughts appreciated
Your TV would have to have the MHL adapter which would mean you would have had to buy it most likely this year. If you are just plugging it into a regular HDMI slot there is not power available this is why you need to hook up the adapter.

I believe you may have ended up getting a copycat adapter (A 1.0 instead of a 2.0), not official. I recently purchased a MHL 2.0 off amazon for $10 and it works just plugging in the tv hdmi without power. The one I got isn't a samsung one, but it is compatible with samsungs (11-pin I believe). The tv I'm plugging into is an OLD tv (got it when hdmi was just coming out) and it works without using an external source- also working fine on my newer tvs. I believe the power for MHL 2.0 is suppose to come from your phone so the tv shouldn't be the problem.

You definitely do not need an MHL input when using this adapter. The whole point of the adapter is to go from MHL (the Note 3 output) to HDMI (the TV input). If you have an MHL input on your TV or receiver all you need is a cable (basically what's in the white box is built into your TV already).
I second the opinion that you got a knock-off. I have both adapters from Samsung and neither of them need external power to operate with a Note 3.
The only restriction with the MHL 2.0 adapter is that it requires that you plug it into a TV and not a receiver, and it will tell you in no uncertain terms if you don't plug it in correctly.
The only reason to plug in power is that it stops your battery draining so fast, the charger provides about 700mA charging current to the N3.

Fair warning though; this adapter is not perfect by any means, you can read my review on amazon (the one that tested it out on the note 3). As noted in my review, I am still waiting on a replacement one (since the original one I got functioned but didn't charge when I hooked up my power adapter), and I'll let you guys know if it's better once I receive it. Even though it doesn't function perfectly, for $10 dollars it does the trick.
Edit: They are sending me an extra without having to return the original, so even if the second one doesn't charge, at $5 a pop I'm happy.

Thanks for alerting me to the counterfeit reasoning that shows this part must be a copycat, I contacted the supplier of this part to us for a partial refund as I will use this as a backup and try and buy an original and prices drop from the £39 or take advice of the other replies in this thread and find a genuine 2.0 MHL non-Samsung version. I'll report back if I have any trouble with the supplier claiming that it is a genuine part and see how far eBay support me.

The MHL 1.0 adapter doesn't care what it's plugged into, only the MHL 2.0 adapter has that issue.
I just bought a mhl cable through amazon. It has the USB connector for the phone on one side, and a HDMI connector on the other. Directly attached to the HDMI connector is a regular USB plug which I plugged into my power source for my phone (as this is how I understood it should work).
I don't get any messages on my phone that indicate that it is connected to my TV/Monitor and my phone also doesn't indicate that it's charging.
What I read from the product description was, that connecting this cable to my power source would also charge the phone. So could it be my phone is charging, even if the battery indicator doesn't say so? Like it would be charging just so much as that my phone doesn't drain? Or should it clearly indicate that the battery gets charged. Befor knowing this, I'm hestitant to send the cable back as defective.
Can any one advise?
Thanks

You're welcome.
I love using MHL, but I really wish there weren't several varieties of MHL cables (5-pin, 11-pin, 1.0 and 2.0) and also such a large number of fakes and very low quality ones out there. Makes buying difficult, as all these threads about MHL demonstrate.
Does anyone know if you can physical see whether you have a 5 pin or 11 pin MHL 2.0?

The power point is used to power the connected devices and doesn't power/charge the tablet.
Plus it's only powerful enough to power USB devices, it will not power 2.5 " HDD's for example.

Did you order one of these? If not, I'm curious as to where your getting the specs from. I'm hoping your wrong of course, lol. My external 2.5" HDD runs perfectly with 500ma, so if I had my 2100ma USB wall wort powering this adapter, I would assume I would get 500ma (if the power is being limited) or more out of the 2 usb ports. Unless Samsung is planning on selling an overpriced breakout box, I don't understand why they would cripple such a nice tablet with this one port for everything crap.

I ordered the 1 port version, not the 2 ports version mentioned above.
It's true the tablet can power 2.5 HDD's when connected to any/most OTG cables, but I also wanted to use it with a phone (which needs the HDD to be connected to a power source).
After I sent the 1 port version back, I looked at buying the 2 port version, but after reading the small print, I found out the tablet couldn't be powered/charged, the power point was used to power the connected devices.
Two examples of the 2 ports version I looked at:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Adapter-Cable-Galaxy-EXCITES/dp/B00J2QID16/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1402734708&sr=8-29&keywords=otg+cable

The USB Power Port only supplies extra power to the dual OTG ports. It will not charge your mobile phone or tablet.

The 2 port version, obviously will work when connecting 2 devices at once, but the power point, won't be any use, as the tablet will already be powering the devices.
That's my understanding of it.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Adapter-Cable-Galaxy-EXCITES/dp/B00J2QID16/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1402734708&sr=8-29&keywords=otg+cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kool-TM-Adapter-Samsung-Smartphones/dp/B00K73U1O0/ref=sr_1_42?ie=UTF8&qid=1402734715&sr=8-42&keywords=otg+cable
The 2 port version, obviously will work when connecting 2 devices at once, but the power point, won't be any use, as the tablet will already be powering the devices.
That's my understanding of it.

Just got this adapter in: http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Ports-Micro-USB-2-0-HUB-Charger-Apdater-Cable-OTG-PC-Laptop-Smartphone-Table-B-/161222133020
It does not charge the tablet. It does supply power to the 2 usb ports even when disconnected from the tablet. It is an inexpensive alternative to the Samsung otg to usb adapter I purchased for $19.99.
Hopefully Samsung or some other company comes out with an adapter that can charge the tablet and has usb and hdmi ports.

BTW, Lava contacted me, and said end of June. 2 more weeks. I'll order one as soon as I can, and will report the results. (I'm not 100% use which model I'll be getting, but they should be the same with just parts/ports missing)

I wish they'd make one that also included HDMI.
So you could charge your device, connect a HDD/USB and play the contents to a TV.

Nice find. I'm with 0-0-0 on the included HDMI. Just got this reply from them "nothing planned for hdmi. our current adapter will work with your 12.2 inch tablet on just usb though." Maybe if enough people contacted them stating their interest, they might develop one. Easy to send a message right from the product page requesting this.

Wouldn't any of the USB to HDMI converters hooked to one of the USB ports work??? (just asking, have no intention of hooking it up)

I don't think an MHL adapter works with a regular USB port. Not 100% sure though. Just ordered a male USB to female micro USB to try, lol. Even if it doesn't work, that's one adapter I don't already own. If it works through this adapter I purchased: http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Ports-Micro-USB-2-0-HUB-Charger-Apdater-Cable-OTG-PC-Laptop-Smartphone-Table-B-/161222133020 then it should work through that Lava adapter.
hdmi, usb , & charge at the same time

here u go guys...meant to post this almost a week ago when i saw the topic. i ordered one for my tab pro 8.4 lte (should work for every variant though) & it works great...u can use hdmi (takes the regular full sized cable) with a hard drive/flash drive or large sdcard connected simultaneously while charging your device but the charger doesnt even need to be plugged up for hdmi to work. The bonus for me was that i won mine in an auction & only paid $4 for it (normally around $10 as u can see from the link which still isnt bad)...if there is any negative about this thing its all the weight/stress resting on that lil micro usb connection which means it basically needs to be placed perfectly flat. They also have a dock version which should solve that issue for around $20 which i plan to order & test at some point...hope this helps other users out with your decision

@burningstep
yep...this DEFINITELY works simultaneously. I use it to watch movies from my usb external on my pico projector that are both connected to the tab pro...u wont be disappointed, in fact, i was surprised that it didnt even need the charger attached because it was necessary for both of my other tabs (the original 7 & the tab plus) although u will want to plug it up anyway or your battery is gonna get burned up pretty quick

Great, thank you very much.
And you're sure, that HDMI and USB-OTG and Tablet-Charging works at the same time? Thus, I'll be able to play a video from an external harddisk to my TV over HDMI out.
