Hey guys.
I'm hoping you can shed a little light here as i'm starting to get frustrated.. Now i've seen various similar threads along the same lines so it's obviously a common problem and anyone who's offered a suggestion to the fix on other threads, i've tried to no avail..
I've had a DHD prior to this and done the whole rooting/ROM'ing thing regularly so quite used to procedures and what to do, but that was slightly different as i did it via the advanced hack kit.. This phone doesn't seem as straightforward to do. But about 3 weeks ago i bit the bullet and unlocked my phone with the intention of rooting and ROM'ing soon after.. Everything went well and the phone has been working perfectly, no issues at all and i've activated the developer option aswell and it's USB debugged box is ticked...
However, a couple of days ago i tried plugging it in to the laptop to transfer some music onto it, but both the two USB 2.0 ports on the right don't recognise it, i get the USB device not recognised message, anything else works fine in them, the only remaining port, a USB 3.0 on the left sees the phone and does allow me to access it, sometimes i can see everything straight away, sometimes i get a blank box and have to wait and the green bar takes ages to load along the bar at the top.. I've even had what appeared to be arabic symbols at one point where it should say Internal storage.. That confused me very much!! But now it won't let me transfer anything other than a single image file to the root. I did this as a test.. It transferred it straight away with no problems, but if i try adding anything else after that, it just hangs on the copying dialog box and either i have to close it or it does it for me a couple of minutes later with the "can't copy file" and "skip this file" options.. I've also tried it on the home computer which works fine but still leaves me with the same problem. Both are Win7 64bit.
I've uninstalled everything HTC from my laptop, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers supplied in the fastboot folder which i was told to download for the unlocking process.. Now, i don't want to have to download HTC Sync as i don't want to access my phone via that, i'd rather just use file explorer and ditch the bloatware.. I'm not sure if i'm running the correct drivers and this is the problem, but i can't seem to find them anywhere.. P.S. I'm in the UK so this is the international version..
Any help would be great as i'm tearing my hair out... I know it's probably something simple but it's refusing to work..
Hey i hope this helps

Olrite so i guess you are dealing with the same i dealt with a while ago when i was on cayanogen mod 11 on my HTC one M7 International ... there are many alternatives to transfer stuff from phone to Laptop but first lets talk about the normal one
Method 1 which you should try is ....
* Download the HTC sync manager .. its ok if you dont wanna use it to transfer data .. just install it ...
* ok so now the important one .. make sure you have window media player installed on your computer ....
okay so why windows media player ??
Well it contains all the MTP drivers you need to connect your phone to your pc ...
* you can restart your system now .. (Optional)
* now connect your device with debugging on ... grab the notification bar click on USB related notification .. and choose MTP or something like that ...i mean don't choose HTC sync manger .. choose the other one
* Now if everything went well you will se your storage in My computer ... and in Windows media player too...
Method 2....
Well if nothing works then download an app called Air Droid ...
it have some nice functionality ...
you will get to know how to use it after installing it ...
by chance if the local link given in the app does not works make a hotspot .. connect your computer to it and open a browser like chrome .. and go to 192.168.1.1:8888
Note : port 8888 is pre configured in the app so if you changed it .. use the dirrent port you used ..
If you are not laptop is not connected with your phone's hotspot then your phone and computer should be on the same network ..
Good luck ... hit thanks if it works just to let me know

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to run through the options.. I really appreciate that.. Unfortunately it seems nothing in terms of transfer via USB works (at least with this cable, it's the only one i have so can't try another at this point) on this phone anymore, i don't know why the sudden glitches, it's been working fine since i've had it but just decided to stop connecting this last couple of days, so whether that's down to drivers or the cable being dodgy etc i have no idea, but the Air droid app works beautifully and i can now transfer anything and everything, it has such a great UI too so thank you for pointing me in the direction of that.. Without it, and you, i'd still be stuck.. So i guess i no longer need to worry about cables or drivers anymore so thanks again!

Howdy,
I have a 'jasjam' and am presently running WM6 Black. I decided today that I would upgrade to the new HTC ROM but almost every time I connect my phone to the PC here (Win XP) I get 'USB Device Not Recognized' on the occasion it does work, once the phone goes into the boatload when I try to upgrade (Hard SPL) I get 'A device attached to the computer has malfunctioned.' or something along those lines.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Ben.
Bump...
The phone seems to initially recognized (XP installs driver for HTC USB Sync), but after a little while the charge light will turn off and the phone will not be seen. After reconnecting it it becomes an 'Unknown USB device' again.
I'm running Schap's 3.54c.
Hopefully someone's encountered this problem before.
Ben.
Managed to upgrade with SD card, which indicently I felt was rather an improved process over upgrading via USB.
In any case I'm still having no luck getting the USB connection to function even now with the new HTC rom.
I've tried various things including cycling 'advanted networking features' under the USB connection properties (I saw this mentioned in another thread).
Again, any help would be appreciated.
Ben.
Try a different usb cable...they have been known to go bad.

I got the same thing with my hermes...i think its a hardware issue. Do you have issues with slow bootup, lost BT etc?
do a system restore on your machine. select the time before you did your last flash. my pc at work does the same thing, system restore usually fixes it.

That's a good idea, that's worked before for me also.
Another option, if you can find the phone under 'Device Manager' on your PC, is to remove it.
And then when you plug your phone back in to your PC it recognizes 'New Hardware' and reinstalls it.
Sometimes that works.
It's happening also for me from time to time.
- A restart of both machines sometimes helps.
- good usb cable is needed (I had a retractable and it was almost never syncing).
- reinstall activesync + delete partenrship on both tel & pc is the last thing you could try...
Still it happens to me sometimes.
PS1: I was almost never able to sync via usb cable when not connected to the Company Lan.
PS2: I found a Mobile Checkpoint VPN client was also "disturbing".
so my activesync hasnt been working for a few days, so i went onto microsoft to try to fix it, and they had an idea of removing the program and reinstalling it, so i did that. My device still cannot be read. i am going to reflash my device with dcds rom, but the only problem i am afraid of now is the fact that i dont have any way to back up my contacts since i cannot connect to my computer, can someone please help me, i really dont know what to do
Get the PIM backup program and save the data to your SD card....
how do i get it on my phone, i cant connect to my pc
You have to copy the cab file to your micro sd card with a card reader. Then install from the cab and run backup to your card.
another way is to make a share on your desktop and connect to it on you phone via wifi.
i got it on my phone, thanks for the help, i really appreciate it

I am glad you go the sd card flash to sort out your problem of getting the rom onto the ppc. My activesync connection is incredibly flaky too. One minute it works, next minute it wont. I am almost certain it is a problem with the pc as others have this problem too. I even seem to remember a post by dcd saying he had the same issue.
Well the way I fixed the problem was to turn off "enable advanced network functionality" from the ppc side. The option is in the start-->settings-->connections tab-->"USB to PC" applet. (This is also sometimes misplaced in start-->settings-->system tab when you have WM6.1 running). Once I disable the advanced network functionality my activesync works flawlessly, and despite what the warning tells you, it seems just as fast as with the advanced network functionality enabled.
i tried it, but unfortunately it still didnt work. i cant even flash my phone right now
First, make sure that both the phone and windows mobile device center are configured to use usb. Also try clearing that option and reselecting it. That sometimes helps. To back up your contacts, see if you can sync over bluetooth. I have found that sometimes I can sync over bluetooth even though it wont connect over usb.
I had a similiar prob with active sync, googled and found a newer version installed the newer version after uninstalling the old. No more problems.
gogetta, where did you find a newer version of ActiveSync?
Wait, maybe I'd better start with "What version did you find?"
I've been using the 4.5 that shipped with my xv6800, and it has worked perfectly ... until ...
Last weekend I installed a new hard drive, using the old one as the slave. It's been a nightmare. I can't get it to work at all!
I've installed, uninstalled, deleted registry settings, etc. so many times I can't even count. I've been all over the web and tried many things .. nothing seems to work.
So what version did you find that worked for you?
Ok guys, I appear to have jacked up my driver somehow.. I just rooted the other day and am currently on DAS BAMF 2.0 and I plugged in my phone tonight and i get NOTHING through windows when mounted as disk drive... So, what i'm seeing in device manager is this:
ANDROID USB DEVICES - MY HTC (this says drivers are up to date
Down a ways on the list is:
Other Devices with a yellow alarm beside "Android Phone"..
I've tried updating drivers and all kinds of junk with NO luck.. HTC sync doesn't help either.. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it several times..
I'm sure it's something that I screwed up cuz I SUCK but... hopefully the knowledge of you fine people can set me straight!!
I'll be away for a few hours but, will check back ASAP
Thanks A lot to all!

Drag down your notification bar. Change from charge only to internet connection mode. Wait a minute while they download. Change back to charge only.
You should be good after that.
BEST ADVICE EVER, my friend! Thanks! Worked like a charm
Glad to help. This has been a common problem. You might need to repeat that every time you change roms.
Great advice.. Glad I know the scoop now! Thanks again
So today I noticed that my battery was about to die and I tried charging my phone and it wouldn't recognize that it was plugged into the mini-usb cable at all. Cleaned the port and pulled the battery and now it will will charge through the cable, but neither my phone nor my PC appear to realize that the two are connected, and ... strangest of all ...
ALL USB OPTIONS ARE NOW MISSING FROM MY PHONE'S MENU.
There are no USB options under "Wireless and network settings."
Under "applications\development" I can select "Android debugging," but that is it. And it doesn't seem to do anything. My phone just charges when connected to my PC and that is it.
No "mass storage" option available anywhere. It was there yesterday--gone today.
I'm running CM 7.2.0 RC2.
The ONLY thing I can think that I did was to delete a genie widget folder from my phone the last time it was connected to my PC. I looked it up first and it is supposed to be a news and weather app which I have never used and which I didn't even know was on there ... Could that have somehow removed USB options from phone's menu?
Also the mini-usb connection is definitely loose--if I jiggle it stops charging the battery--so it could be a hardware problem ... but how would a hardware problem remove all USB options from the software?
Any advice greatly appreciated! I use my phone as an MP3 player and not being able to put music on there is just going to ruin things for me ....

Sounds like you have a bad usb port on your phone. First thing I would try is a new usb cable from the T-Mobile store. If that doesn't work then you definitely have a defected usb port. www.mobiletechvideos.com will repair your usb port on the phone, it runs around 40 bucks but the usb cable will only be around $15. I thought my usb port was bad but it turned out to be a defected cable. Thankfully.
Ps: the news and weather app deletion should not effect usb mass storage what so ever.

Confirm it's not the ROM/kernel first. Flash back to another ROM/stock and see if anything changes
Since it's charging sounds like you USB port is fine . Follow FaultExcepts advice and reflash the ROM .

I'll try a new mini-usb cord first and if that doesn't work I will reflash ... It sucks that I have no way to back stuff up first, since I can't copy anything over to my computer ...
Will post back with the results. Thanks again you guys!

Titanium backup.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try titanium back up.
All: I bought a new mini usb cord and tried it out. As soon as I connected my phone to my laptop, my phone displayed a "mass storage" message and I thought "Yes!" It's working! But then the message went away and my laptop displayed a message stating that there was a problem with the hardware I'd connected ...
Since then, nothing. It is exactly the same as before: phone will charge, but nothing else.
So it must be a hardware problem with the phone, or the ROM got corrupted and should be reflashed. I wish I could know for sure before pursuing either option ...
Which would be more likely to actually remove USB settings from the options menu? That is the thing I still can't figure out ...

In that case you should just reflash the ROM or flash a completely new ROM to see if that's the issue, considering that is the free option. If that doesn't work then it would have to be a bad usb port on your phone, which is a 45 dollar option from mobiletechvideos.com. . When you flash a ROM make sure you wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. I would format the system partition as well, just to make sure you get a fresh install.

If the pictures and videos are on your external sd card then you can just take it out as a precaution.
There may be an app that can do this for you if you're pics and vids are on the internal memory, since you can't connect to your pc. Google a app that backs up pictures and videos, you may find something. Just to clarify, you do have Samsung phone drivers installed on your pc, correct? You can't connect to mass storage through the computer unless you have the correct drivers installed. Also, as far as I know there is only one usb option you need checked to get in mass storage mode, and that's usb debugging. You say all other usb option are gone but that is the only option I have ever seen on any ROM, unless your talking about adb over network, which I don't think you will need to mess with that.

Your pictures should be fine. Wiping only wipes the ROM for the most part.
Thanks Itz and FaultException for your responses!
I managed to back up my videos and pictures, by uploading them to mediafire from my phone.
I decided to bite the bullet. I went into recovery to reflash, wiped everything, went to install the zips, and ... there were no zips. I know I didn't delete them from the last time I installed a ROM, which was quite recent. But they were gone. I can't add them by connecting to my PC, and I can't download them directly onto my phone, because now ... I can't boot into the ROM. My nandroid backup does not work .... Man. This is going to be a fun evening.
I ended up pulling the external SD card, putting it into my mp3 player, downloading the zips onto that, put it back into my phone, and install from there (even though I know you're supposed to install from internal memory, not external.)
It worked just fine. I have a brand new, fresh installation of CM7. And .... I still can't connect to my PC via USB. It will charge, but that is it.
Yes, my PC has the required Samsung drivers, at least I put them on their previously. And in any event my laptop with windows 7 automatically recognized my phone before this issue began, without me installing anything extra ... Now, it will not.
It has to be a hardware issue with the port.
Now I have to decide whether it is worth trying to get it fixed, sending it off, etc, or if I should just start looking for a used Galaxy II on craigslist ...

At least your up and running now and your phone can charge, so that's a plus. I encouraged a member a few weeks back who had a bad usb port, to send his phone to www.mobiletechvideos.com because they are a very trusted source. He was up and running when he got his phone back and went ahead to say the service was great and had tracking on the package I believe. Here is the thread link, in case you want to read it.

Edit: it costs $45 dollars to get your phone fixed by them so that's probably your best option in my opinion. Any other option will cost more.

In the meantime I thought I might just try moving files back and forth via the external SD card ... but now I find that I can not move files from my internal memory to the external card or vice versa ..
Anyone know what could be preventing me from doing it? I just get a message that says: "Could not move file."
Hey guys, I'm having a little problem here with my Player 4.0 . Whenever I connect my device to my computer, it will connect for a second, then disconnect, and keep going like that for a few minutes, until it just completely disconnects. I'm trying to install Terrasilent kernel so that I can install Ethereal rom, however, with it doing this I'm unable to use odin to do so.
I have Kies installed and all, I've already tried troubleshooting, and I've already tried changing usb ports. The only thing I have yet to try is use another computer, but I want to know if there's anything else I can try to fix this. Another thing is, the device has an icon that looks something like this:
*phone* -- [!] -- *computer*
What are you're settings in wireless and networks -> usb settings? For Kies you need to (how surprising) Kies. Choose mass storage to mount the internal SD card.

Your microusb cable may be going. I had a bad cable initially, and I had to hold it just right to get things to flash successfully, which was a lot if fun while trying to fix a completely bricked device . Also, that image is forced download mode, which means that a flash failed previously. Just connect it to the computer while that image is showing, and it should pop up in Odin, if it actually connects.

I've tried my GSII cable, my 4.0 cable, and a blackberry cable, none had seemed to work. I ended up fixing my sister's laptop today, and tried it there, surprisingly, it worked. I had a similar issue back when I owned an iPod, and it just wasn't working on my computer. Oddly enough, my GSII is fine with my computer, never had to use another.
Anyways, I had gotten everything working right, flashed terrasilent and your rom on the thing, my sister seems to like it bunches, although there are a few issues (things randomly force closing, even the status bar managed to force close on itself, also some visual bugs (when pulling down the status bar). Eagerly waiting for the next update, my sister as well :3

I think it has something to do with the drivers. I remember that mine wouldn't connect at all to my computer, and I had to use my other one like you lol. So basically I had to completely uninstall Kies, and the drivers that the player installed on my computer. Then I reinstalled everything and made sure they installed properly. It worked fine after that.

Sounds like you need a full wipe. Did you wipe cache/dalvik before you flashed? The visual bug is an issue with my theming that I have been fruitlessly trying to fix, but it's better then the statusbar not working at all, which was the case int he last version.

Yes, I wiped cache and dalvik cache beforehand. I've also tried setting the device to stock rom, wiping, reflashing terra, and then flashing your rom again, still get random force close messages. (ex. "play store is not responding")
I'm thinking it was a bad zip, probably gonna redownload the rom, things like this have happened to me before on my GSII, only it resulted in.. bricks.
