[Q] Cyanogenmod 11 USB OTG? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have had Cyanogenmod 11 installed on my Z2 almost since I got it... However, I realised the other day that I really miss the USB OTG feature from my old Nexus 5. It was great for being able to backup/restore system images directly to/from a USB drive that I have (Transcend JetFlash 380 32GB if anyone cares...). Anyway, I know this was a feature of the stock ROM as I used it a couple times before I installed CM11. Now I would really like this feature back, since I know the phone is capable of doing it, does anyone have any idea of how to enable it? Thanks in advance

Maybe Stick Mount work

Isn't it already included? I know it is in pac as I plug my USB devices in all the time with no issues
Sent from my Xperia Z2 using Tapatalk

Unfortunately not. Stick mount wouldn't find it and it isn't already included... Starting to think it might be a problem with the memory stick. I'll go back to stock and try it to see if that's the case. Thanks anyway!

[Q] Mount USB drive?

Has anyone here tried mounting a USB drive with the rezound? I've read that the Galaxy Nexus can mount a usb drive using an on the go USB cable. Now that there are several ICS versions out for our Rezounds, has anyone tried this? I dont have an OTG cable yet or else I'd try it.
Thanks!
I know this works with the HD dock, but not directly for whatever reason. It should work if we get an AOSP ROM like CM9.

I wonder why it works with the HD dock but nothing else. I ordered an "On the Go" USB Host cable from amazon and just tried it, and it didnt work. After our official OTA ICS upgrade and with released source code, maybe a dev will know how to include that.
Not really a big fan of Cyanogen. I think they try hard and do good work, but I will not run it on any of my devices again. I had it on my Samsung and because they didnt have access to driver source code they didnt know how to put the hardware into low power sleep mode and it was a massive battery hog. It got less than half the battery life than Samsung touchwiz based ROMs. I think Mfg based ROMS are of better quality.

USB OTG Cables

I just ordered my USB OTG Cable today. For those that don't know what it means, it stands for USB On-The-Go. Basically, it allows you to read files from a portable flash drive straight from your phone. This will only work with a compatable kernel and since we have an ICS Source the developers said it was already enabled within the kernel.
This will be my first time to have ever used one and I was just wondering the pros and cons of having something like this.
I need some feed back~~
well from my POV these are my pros and cons...
PROS:
Extra space (whatever you can get that hooks up to usb, 2tb!!)
CONS:
Lugging around the extra crap
You have a good con list ziggy46..lol
I was concerned about that as well. But I have a 500gb portable external hard drive and it has tons of crap that I can probably watch or listen to on my phone. I can't shove everything on my 32gb sdcard. My 1T sits on my desk for my wife's photography thing she does.
My friend has an OTG cable and he uses his usb mouse to control his phone.
It's pretty cool but really gimmicky.
Hmmm...interesting. Thanks for the tip
if your otg cable works out good for you let us know. i might buy one and get a 2tb usb hdd.
btw, if things are fomatted in NTFS you might need to make a script for them to mount to the phone...
HTC doesn't support USB OTG in general. It will require a kernel hack. It didn't work in GB. I am not sure about ICS.
From what kozmick mentioned in his kernel thread it was enabled in the kernel. Im hoping it works if not then I hope it works on the N7 or my wife's SGS2.

There are things enabled in ics kernel that are not in gb kernel. 2 way call recording is one example.

I still have my OTG cable from my Nokia N8. I wonder if it will work..
Normally USB otg won't work on an HTC device. According to faux its something about the USB stack.
Ok. So I FINALLY got my USB-OTG Cable and even with the enabeled kernel it does not work. Kinda bummed but the part was cheap so its not a major loss. It works on ky wife's SGS2 and I read that it will work on the Idolian tablet I just ordered so I'm cool with that. I'll try and sell the other 3 that I won't need.

Just wondering, for the usb otg on the sgs2, did you need to connect the ext hd with power source? Or is the sgs2 able to power the ext hd?
It was able to power it just fine. I was just using a 2GB flash drive to test and you can see the led light come on. Not sure how well it could keep the charge up tho.

I would like to see this working on our phone. Seems pretty damn useful.
Anyone find a solution because before stumbling upon this thread I actually bought one as well but only for .99.

[Q] change usb settings??

Hello,
I bought an external keyboard that connects via the mini usb port. It didn't work, but found a suggestion:
When I first connected my adapter that came with my tablet to the keyboard adapter I was very disappointed that nothing happened. I tried several different browser pages, but nothing happened. I read reviews on here and noticed on about that someone mentioned they changed their USB settings and their keyboard finally started working. So, I immediately went to my Settings, Advanced Settings, and then USB BUS MODE and changed it from DEVICE mode to HOST mode and VOILA - the keyboard immediately started functioning

I tried to find where to change the usb settings to host but couldn't find the area. Is there anywhere I can find this? I am using the AOPK Rom. Thanks for any help!
OTG not in any of the Nook Tablet yet
OTG is not implemented yet on the stock nor current cm10 roms based on what I have asked in this forum for Nook Tablet. I know you can do this with the new nooks that have monochrome display. May I ask where did you read this article?

Were you reading the review for the Nook Color with working usb otg? It does work for that tablet, not the NT though.

I wasn't looking specifically for how to get it working on the tablet, just looking in general for how to do it in android. Hopefully they implement the otg soon
I just downloaded the new cm10 (snappy and no more reboot/sdcard lost errors!!) but there wasn't anything about the type of usb connection in that one either...
Am I not going to be able to use this keyboard? Will I have to break down and buy a price blue tooth one????

At this time the NT does not have usb otg on any ROM, it may in the future, but if and when is not known at this time. The NT will never have bluetooth, Never. It has been well documented why, do a search and read. So a BT keyboard will never work. Is it really that hard to type with your thumbs?

It isn't really a matter of difficulty, it is a matter of duration. I didn't want a full laptop and I like the android os so wanted to try a tablet with a keyboard for my mobile computing needs. I am do a good amount of typing (chapters for novels and such) and prefer a keyboard. I was using my phone before and it was a lot slower than what I can do with a keyboard and got tiring after an hour or so. It isn't detrimental that I can't use a keyboard, just desired.

I bought a Toshiba Thrive 32gb off craigslist for $200. I am now running CM10. I bought it for those exact reasons. It has full sized usb, full sized hdmi, micro usb, full sized sd card expandable to 128 gb, bluetooth capable, gps, 10.1" screen. I use a mouse through usb, bluetooth keyboard, and I hook it up to my TV or
computer monitor and is performs really well as a portable computer with little cost involved.

lol, after spending 150 on the tablet I think that I am going to skip buying another, however I have started looking at other virtual keyboard options and will be trying out a few to see if they can fill the gap until/if they activate the usb otg. Thanks for the info and I will reply if I find a keyboard that I like enough to be useable as a touch typer!!

[Dev] USB OTG Tests

Recently google said OTG isnt supported on the nexus 4 device
So curiosity has got the better of me and I've requested for people to test a few things, this is a development thread created for USB OTG and getting it to work.
What we know:
The snapdragon s4 soc support otg (running all the time reads mdm as usb device)
Slimport support OTG
kernel supports OTG
Unsure about ROM
This is created from my mobile device, when i receive net access ill update this more
Kernel i built 2 weeks ago or so, supports OTG
If anyone with an OTG Cable can test and provide both logcat and dmesg when plugging in a device, to make it easier would prefer ps3 controller connecting. Ontop of that do 2 tests 1 without supplying power and 1 with supplying power.
Newer kernel http://d-h.st/o0O
Installation ZIP, http://d-h.st/o0O
Works on any ROM
Remember to modify build.prop and add ro.usb_host=1
Think ive just figured it out new kernel will be uploaded & mod lets hope it works need testers
Ill test the kernel to make sure its good and boots fine then ill drop the kernel, but i can only test to a certain extent i dont own an OTG Cable, also youll need to modify @ ROM level

Thanks man really appreciate the offer but that would take days, maybe even weeks to get here, Im in the UK, I was hoping to get the tests done and see if its possible or not pretty quickly
I've already sliced 2 usb cables, on my last one

also put into build.prop ro.usb_host=1
Give it a test, and please provide logs, thank you
EDIT: FOR STOCK ROM ONLY
(Thanks to endursa for reminding me)

Just remember to put into build.prop
ro.usb_host=1
I don't have a PS3 controller, so this was tested using a standard USB thumbdrive, i also don't have a splitter to make it powered, so i'm afraid i can't test this either, this was the thumb-drive plugged directly into the phone:
dmesg:

logcat:

Both will expire in a day, in case i missed any personal information.

You would need to dirty flash the cm nightly again, then this kernel. I assume you were on Franco's kernel when flashing this one

I've tried it and flashed on stock rom. Boots fine but OTG doesn't work. The otg cable + thumb drive are working fine on Galaxy S2.
EDIT: I also added ro.usb_host=1 to build.prop
Do i need some app to see if USB thumbdrive working?
I flashed the kernel, added ro.usb_host=1, where do i see if USB thumbdrive mounted?
I have:
- an OTG cable
- a power USB Y cable
- a powered USB Hub
* USB keyboard/mouse
* USB pen drive

is it a known issue that N4 doesn't have USB +5V power supply?
So what's the purpose of this test? even if you manage to make it work, it won't be useful

Pay attention. He asked for testers to supply their own power as well. If a setup with external power is useful for even one person and he gets it working, then this has served a purpose.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.

Yes, OTG was disabled by Google during developement because they found out it couldn't supply 5V

I believe in the general complaint thread about no OTG someone spoke of a phone that wasn't able to supply 5V either, but it was infact doable after some modifications(software ones), so it may very well be that similar modifications here could work
Somethings funny
Cause if google advertised the device as USBOTG supported, then theyve setup the kernel for usbotg enabled, theyre saying the issue is no 5v, wouldnt supplying power bring USBOTG back? It isnt, so obviously it was taken away on purpose. If we can get around this and get USBOTG working is theee question.

[Q] Venue 8 w/ tomtom, and backup camera

Hi, im new to this forum. I bought a venue 8 and plant to install it on my car. It just upgraded to 4.4.2. I havw some questions:
1. I install tomtom 1.3.2 us map in the internl memory but it does not work. Does anybody know how to fix?
2. Can i use easycap to connect to backup camera. If yes, w hat version of the chip of easycap. There are several chip outside there.
Thanks so much guys,
I am not familiar with the tom tom sotware but this tab is not going to work for a couple reasons. First off the easycap is not going to work on stock android as I'm almost positive there is no driver except on maybe CM rom which we can not flash at this point. Also even IF it was the windows version you had this tablet would still not be ideal for your application as it does not have a dedicated charging port. In other words you would have to disconnect your charge cable to connect the OTG adapter for the easycap. You would be much better off finding a tab with said dedicated port. Great tab, just not well suited to what you want to do. Hope I helped! :good:
so is there any uvc device capture I can use for my purpose?
What is the different between Nexus 7 and venue 8, b/c I read somewhere on the Nexus they use rooted android 4.4 or unrooted 4.3 which is similar to the venue 8?
This one will work: ( i'm under 10 posts)

Yes that will probably work but the issue is you cannot charge and use that at the same time, so if you dont mind unplugging the charger and plugging in the uvc everytime you need to use it then no prob, its just not ideal for a clean install imo. I dont own a nexus but as far as I know none come rooted (someone correct me if Im wrong) but I think it is a simple process to root em, maybe even a one click method but again I am not 100% sure. Ideally you need to see if the Nexus has the dedicated charge port or ask someone who knows as that is going to be the biggest advantage for your install if so.
