USB OTG Cables - HTC Amaze 4G

I just ordered my USB OTG Cable today. For those that don't know what it means, it stands for USB On-The-Go. Basically, it allows you to read files from a portable flash drive straight from your phone. This will only work with a compatable kernel and since we have an ICS Source the developers said it was already enabled within the kernel.
This will be my first time to have ever used one and I was just wondering the pros and cons of having something like this.
I need some feed back~~

well from my POV these are my pros and cons...
PROS:
Extra space (whatever you can get that hooks up to usb, 2tb!!)
CONS:
Lugging around the extra crap

You have a good con list ziggy46..lol
I was concerned about that as well. But I have a 500gb portable external hard drive and it has tons of crap that I can probably watch or listen to on my phone. I can't shove everything on my 32gb sdcard. My 1T sits on my desk for my wife's photography thing she does.

My friend has an OTG cable and he uses his usb mouse to control his phone.
It's pretty cool but really gimmicky.

Hmmm...interesting. Thanks for the tip

if your otg cable works out good for you let us know. i might buy one and get a 2tb usb hdd.
btw, if things are fomatted in NTFS you might need to make a script for them to mount to the phone...

HTC doesn't support USB OTG in general. It will require a kernel hack. It didn't work in GB. I am not sure about ICS.

From what kozmick mentioned in his kernel thread it was enabled in the kernel. Im hoping it works if not then I hope it works on the N7 or my wife's SGS2.

There are things enabled in ics kernel that are not in gb kernel. 2 way call recording is one example.

I still have my OTG cable from my Nokia N8. I wonder if it will work..

Normally USB otg won't work on an HTC device. According to faux its something about the USB stack.

Ok. So I FINALLY got my USB-OTG Cable and even with the enabeled kernel it does not work. Kinda bummed but the part was cheap so its not a major loss. It works on ky wife's SGS2 and I read that it will work on the Idolian tablet I just ordered so I'm cool with that. I'll try and sell the other 3 that I won't need.

Just wondering, for the usb otg on the sgs2, did you need to connect the ext hd with power source? Or is the sgs2 able to power the ext hd?

It was able to power it just fine. I was just using a 2GB flash drive to test and you can see the led light come on. Not sure how well it could keep the charge up tho.

Whoa, let us know if it work with any kernel that you tried. I've been itchin trying usb otg

I would like to see this working on our phone. Seems pretty damn useful.

Anyone find a solution because before stumbling upon this thread I actually bought one as well but only for .99.

[Q] usb host on Flyer?

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there should be any technical reason why the Flyer cant run on Honeycombe 3.1 and implement the usb host update so I can download jpegs from my dslr using usb.
Many thanks.
It might be worth trying it without honeycomb, I believe that Qualcomm chips have supported USB host since Eclair, perhaps HTC enabled it already?
Has anyone tried it yet?
I'd like to read some gps data from a SD card.
Thanks guys but needed a tablet asap which would also allow me to transfer files from my dslr via usb. Its been confirmed on other forums that the 3.1 update from Motorola will enable this so went with the Zoom
If you just need it for the DSLR have you considered an EyeFI card? For less than $100 you can get a direct connection from the camera to the tablet (or phone).

USB-host on Flyer
hi guys!
any news on this topic?
as there is already tmp root achieved and permanent root on s-off flyers, has anybody already tried to implement usb host functionality now?
I believe to have heard, that Honeycomb should support USB-host functionality automatically... Do we need to wait for 3.2, or could we get it earlier?
I'd really appreciate this (as I am also owning a DSLR from Canon), and would be willing to donate.
greets, alf.
Sure that the Flyer has the necessary chipset to work as a USB host?
Sent from HTC Flyer using Tapatalk
I'm actually working on a direct DSLR app using USB host, a preview of which should hopefully be released by the end of the week (alpha, not beta).
I'm mentioning this because it works on the Galaxy S2 with 2.3.4. I've not been able to get it to work on the Galaxy S1 with 2.3.4, but it just goes to show, it may not be 100% necessary to be running HC 3.1 to support it (as evidenced by the SGS2).
What kind of connection cable does the HTC Flyer have ? Micro USB ? If so, I'd advise to give the test app a spin when I release it if you happen to have a USB host cable.
Either way, the chips themselves have supported it for years and years, that's not the issue. Kernel and framework support and such is the problem.

yes, the flyer got a micro usb port.
I also happen to have the correct usb host cable (micro usb to usb-female...), so as soon as your software is out, I would give it a try.
please keep us informed, thx!

Test with a card reader or ext hd (powered) plugged to your cable and see if you get a new drive through a file explorer... The kernel will definitely need to support this functionality, or the fstab may need to be modified.

Indeed if you have a micro usb cable already, connect a usb stick, see if anything happens... that should tell you straight up.
of course I already tried different devices (USB-stick, hard drive, camera directly...), but there was absolutely no reaction ...
simply plugging it in doesn't work.

Then it's probably lacking kernel and/or framework support.
is there a way to fix this with root?

Hi Chainfire,
have you looked into the Archos Gen8 range of tablets for any kernel info?
They utilise Froyo and have had USB host since day one. Maybe you could patch something from there?
H.
And what about porting the results for the SGT described here? http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...e-versatile-thanks-to-usb-host-functionality/
I can't wait. A Flyer with notes, the pen and USB host would be an fantastic tool for photography AND for any kind of fieldwork.
If you can take a photo with a proper camera and then check it on a flyer awesome display and use the pen... just imagine!
Sometimes I'm afraid that HTC did not bet enough hard for a fantastic device!

Dev target: USB OTG?

I just saw this on Reddit; might be old news to some, but this is the first I've heard about it. Apparently there is a $1.38 (on Amazon.com) cable that allows you to connect various USB devices, and if the device supports USB OTG, you can run flash or powered hard (not portable) drives, keyboards, mice, or even a hub to use more than one. If the device doesn't, it can be added with root, or included in a ROM. I'm not a developer. I'm not even a programmer, so I don't have the first idea on how this could be done. But a Bluetooth keyboard is around $80, and this will allow a $10 keyboard to be used, or a $10 mouse, for a cost of about $12 for one, $22 for both, plus whatever a hub goes for. So having USB OTG could save some folks a lot of money. Plus if they want to use a USB controller for gaming, they can save the cost of a PS3 controller entirely (about $40).

After reading my response and the subsequent responses, I realize that it probably came off flame-ish. My apologies. It wasn't so much the topic as it was posted in the dev forum. They frown on that, unfortunately.
I am open to questions if you have any regarding USB OTG. I had to mess around with various USB configurations until I found the right connections. When it works, it just works. But figuring it out from a Youtube video in another language made me want to write a guide. I hope it helps.
Good luck!
Well, I have a USB OTG cable coming at some point in the next week. I only paid 90¢ for it on Amazon, so it's not a huge loss if it doesn't work. I will consult your guide when I get it, if it doesn't just work. Obviously I'm gonna hook it up and try it as soon as I get the package.
I have two devices intended for it -- a 10" mini keyboard I got on Newegg for $15 (shipped). If I can't get this to work at all (and I'm sure I will be able to), I can use the keyboard for our bedroom computer, which has a half-broken, dirty, unwieldy "ergonomic" keyboard hooked up to it (and toss that one). Also a wired Xbox 360 controller, for mobile gaming.

The Chainfire program should be able to step you through the diagnostics of it. The biggest trick is getting enough power supplied to the phone plus the devices.

Any device that fully implements the standard USB HID protocol should just plug and play. A wired XBOX 360 controller should work, as well as the keyboard... as long as they don't require proprietary software/drivers to operate properly.
For my gaming solution, I went with the Sixaxis drivers for pairing with a PS3 controller through Bluetooth. That was pretty neat and it works. As far as keyboards, I have a wireless Logitech K400 with a touchpad which is fully functional. Using the one USB dongle which uses Logitech's 'Unifying' technology, I also have a Logitech M570 trackball mouse. So essentially, I carry a pocket-sized computer with me everywhere I go. Who needs a laptop?
Self-Powered USB Hubs work great with this setup, you can have multiple devices and Android (being based on Linux) will handle it as long as the kernel has the drivers built in. I've been having trouble trying to get external storage to work under CM7, but I also haven't been working to figure that out.

MHL not working - any ideas?

Hi guys, I got an oem MHL to hdmi cable from eBay, one specifically for the galaxy s3.
I received it today and while the phone seems to detect it's attached to a screen (audio set to hdmi out, landscape mode), the two devices I can connect it to both register nothing connected.
Is there something missing? The first device is a monitor using a hdmi to dvi adapter, the second is a 720p tv with hdmi in. The tv allows me to select the hdmi it's plugged into but says there's no signal.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you powering the device from another USB port.
All MHL adapters and cables for the Galaxy S2/3 need to be powered by an external USB port.

Ok it looks like it might be an issue with the ROM, using an AOKP build of JB 4.1.2
Apparently it doesn't support the TV out - shame, I thought I'd finally found the ROM I was going to stick with

If you get the cheap ones there's a huge chance of it not working just from looking through feedback on the Internet. Just spend a bit extra and get a samsung one.
Ive tried mine on many different roms and kernels and it always works.

I was making one with a power core link to this device but accidentally blew circuit twice on MicroSD to USB. ^^; The idea was using this device USB end to a PS3 controller to play games. Anyways, what phone are you planning on to do this? You might want to check with that phones' ROM devs and ask around in that phone threads, they know about it power configurations.

[Dev] USB OTG Tests

Recently google said OTG isnt supported on the nexus 4 device
So curiosity has got the better of me and I've requested for people to test a few things, this is a development thread created for USB OTG and getting it to work.
What we know:
The snapdragon s4 soc support otg (running all the time reads mdm as usb device)
Slimport support OTG
kernel supports OTG
Unsure about ROM
This is created from my mobile device, when i receive net access ill update this more
Kernel i built 2 weeks ago or so, supports OTG
If anyone with an OTG Cable can test and provide both logcat and dmesg when plugging in a device, to make it easier would prefer ps3 controller connecting. Ontop of that do 2 tests 1 without supplying power and 1 with supplying power.
Newer kernel http://d-h.st/o0O
Installation ZIP, http://d-h.st/o0O
Works on any ROM
Remember to modify build.prop and add ro.usb_host=1
Think ive just figured it out new kernel will be uploaded & mod lets hope it works need testers
Ill test the kernel to make sure its good and boots fine then ill drop the kernel, but i can only test to a certain extent i dont own an OTG Cable, also youll need to modify @ ROM level

Pay attention. He asked for testers to supply their own power as well. If a setup with external power is useful for even one person and he gets it working, then this has served a purpose.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.

is it a known issue that N4 doesn't have USB +5V power supply?
So what's the purpose of this test? even if you manage to make it work, it won't be useful

Yes, OTG was disabled by Google during developement because they found out it couldn't supply 5V

I believe in the general complaint thread about no OTG someone spoke of a phone that wasn't able to supply 5V either, but it was infact doable after some modifications(software ones), so it may very well be that similar modifications here could work
Somethings funny
Cause if google advertised the device as USBOTG supported, then theyve setup the kernel for usbotg enabled, theyre saying the issue is no 5v, wouldnt supplying power bring USBOTG back? It isnt, so obviously it was taken away on purpose. If we can get around this and get USBOTG working is theee question.

Should be copied in OP so, people stop asking.
