[Q] Optimal data/voice/SMS plan for Gear S owned outright? - Samsung Gear S

As part of attending the Samsung developer's conference last week in SFO, we all got Gear S devices, set up for ATT. So not having any present service relationship with ATT, what can they provide in terms of monthly service plans?
Yes, many OP have posted material on related subjects, but most assumed that they were going to purchase the unit outright or on contract.

So youve basically bought it off conteact like a lot if us. Even without unlocking you have several options.
Att monthly like 30 dollars
Straight talk monthly which uses att towers. Pick your plan and cost
Pay as you go. Im doing this on h20 which also uses att towers, not sure what other payg carriers there are.
Basically anyone using att towers will work out of the box.

Or you can unlock it to go with t=mobile no number required just choose the right one to unlock give your IMEI and your good to go. Or you can just use bluetooth wifi for now. Lucky you

1. Find a friend on AT&T and put it on their contract and let them pay your 10 monthly access fee and promise not to go over your minutes/data.
2. Chop down your current phone's micro sim to a nano sim. Or order a new one. Assuming you have a GSM smartphone, and If you have an iPhone that sim may already fit. Just eject it put it in the watch and go.
3. Use without a sim.

I was suspecting that would be the giveaway at SDC this year. I like the idea of the Gear S, but not the implementation - I'm severely disappointed that they did not give a Gear S option with the IR blaster - as that's very useful to me. Maybe a future version will have that added back. I suspect removing superfluous hardware like camera and ir blaster might have been decisions to help battery life, since this will have a built in phone radio using up a lot of that juice.
What I think would be a useful evolution of a device like this is once they're able to get decent battery life out of it, to take the data and voice plans off your phone (making that behave more like a small tablet) and tether the data and voice from the watch to all other devices you would carry with you (laptop, handset, bluetooth, tablet, etc.). In essence, the watch would be the sole device you pay a carrier fees for. Does anyone know whether it's capable of tethering now? It's too bad the data speed isn't at the full bore LTE capability. I prefer using a bluetooth headset for conversations anyway so I would rather pull my handset/tablet out when I need a larger display than the watch (it's how I use the Gear 2 now)

if i get the GS from ATT no contract and put a sim card from whoever will i be able to call forward my calls from my Sprint S5?

I haven't tried the call forwarding, just had access to an active att nano sim, and wanted to see if it worked.
What I understand is the call forwarding is more of a software function on your phone and not carrier specific where it gets forwarded too.
Hope this helps

If anyone is looking to buy a Springboard, tmo has it for $299 and no contract.

Thanks to Kueller at SD.
I am really interested in this.
One question though - I already have a smartphone plan with t-mo. I would like to simply use my smartphone SIM in this device, and be able to make voice calls. Is that possible? If not, I think I will pass.

This has been answered numerous time already. Honeycomb has no phone capabilities but if you install ICS then you will have the ability to make a call but it seems that you won't have data. This is a limitation from TMobile and hopefully they will change this in the near future although I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.
Nice deal! I would cross the border and jump on this if it weren't for the fact that I already bought one used along with a leather case for $140 total. Add in the $30 repair for my stupid insertion of a microSD into the SIM slot, and $15 I will probably have to spend on an unlock, and I'm still coming out ahead at $185.

I can't speak for postpaid, but I have a prepaid SIM that I put on the $3/day voice/text/data plan. The SIM works in smartphones such as Galaxy Nexus and Nexus One, but when I put it into the Springboard it says invalid SIM. I think T-Mobile screens for the IMEI of its tablets and bans them from using the network on a phone plan.

[Q] Cutting the Voice Plan and living solely on the Data Highway

Hi guys,
I find myself exclusively using Talkatone for all my calling needs, both receiving and making calls. I text through Google voice, but mainly use whatsapp for my messaging needs. Further I travel a lot out of the country so I find that I am not using my voice/text plan at all.
Before I would justify keeping my ATT plan because I'm grandfathered with unlimited data. We all know it's not really unlimited but I figured it was worth keeping.
Now I figure it's time to cut costs by getting rid of my voice plan and just having a 3 GB a month prepaid data plan. It's cheaper and I would only pay for the months I am actually in the country. That's big savings right there.
So before I go down this road, I wanted to know which tablet my Galaxy Note should pretend to be when I sign up for the ATT tablet plan. I can't tell them it's a Galaxy Note because then they will insist on me having a voice plan because it's a smartphone.
Any ideas and where would I find the APN settings needed to make the Galaxy Note work with whatever device you guys recommend I ask for.
Thanks.
Your phone will tell at&t what it is. You can't bypass that. APN settings won't help either. As soon as you register your device on the network your phone sends your IEMI number.

When I travel to other countries,I can buy a USB modem with a prepaid plan and then I take the sim out of the modem and put it into my phone. I then configure the APN and my internet starts working.
Can't I do something similar with ATT? I asked at ATT if I needed to bring my "tablet' and they said no, just to tell them what I have, and they had IMEIs the could use to provision it.
That's why I thought there would be a good tablet my Note could pretend to be. I was thinking a Galaxy Tab since it's a Samsung as well.
The reason you can do that out of country is because those companies don't have at&t imei numbers stored in their databases.
You can give at&t whatever imei you want to try to use. However, as soon as you put that sim in your note, its going to report back exactly what it is and your plan will be changed automatically.
Another option would be T-Mobile prepaid. $30/month for 5gb data. If you don't live in a refarmed area, you'd have to flash a T-Mobile modem to your phone for 4g speeds, otherwise you'll be stuck on edge.

Maybe the answer is buying an ATT Hotspot device. Would mean carrying two devices though. But maybe I can live with that. One plus is I wouldn't have to swap sim cards in my phone when I travel. I would just put the device away and turn off airplane mode when I go out of country and begin using the other sim card.

Isn't the price of a hotspot data plan more costly than a voice+data smartphone plan?
If dollars is the bottom line then move to Straight Talk. Its a little cheaper and its pay as you go.
When I started travelling a few years ago, usb modem was the easiest way to do it. I was actually surprised when I was able to remove the sim card from the modem and put it into my iphone at the time. It even had a phone number associated with it and I was able to buy voice credit for it.
Now I have a voice/data plan abroad.

Has it been confirmed that the AT&T Note will not work on an AT&T prepaid tablet plan, or are we being theoretical?
I want a Note as a second (third, fourth,... ) device but don't yet want to rely on the TMobile refarming in Chicago, can't find a TMobile Note 1, don't want to pay Note 2 prices, and don't want to flash a new radio.
I've considered the international Note but they run noticeably more and I really do prefer the other's layout.
Worst case scenario, I jump on the next clean $250 AT&T Note I see, give it to my girlfriend as a mini wifi tablet, get MY SGP 5.0 back from her, and sell that thing.
If memory serves, it was confirmed by quite a few people in this forum when the phone came out a year ago.

Bummer. How about the international version? I could activate the sim in my 7.0+.
I don't think so, but the real savings are realized when you can just pay for the hotspot plan as needed versus paying every month.
Assuming you can use the prepaid data plans on the Note, which I don't you can, the cheapest prepaid voice that allows you to add a data plan is $25 a month and the most logical dataplan offered for prepaid smartphones is $25 for 1 GB. That's $50 a month for a lousy 1 GB.
The hotspot plan is $50 a month for 5 GB. I didn't see any mention that it required a contract. There is an option for monthly if you buy the device full price.
Keeping my contract plan I would have to pay $70 a month on the cheapest plan, and no flexibility to only pay the months I'm in the US.
Once I'm back in country, I'll look into this more.
The other option would be to skip the hotspot and use the $200 towards the galaxy tab and use a tethering app. But then you don't know if they are going to catch you tethering.

They will catch you, and send you a text asking you to buy a tether plan. They wait a few days then cut you off. Possibly there's a tether work around for the tab.
Hot Spot it is
So I decided to test Tmobile and ATT in my area where I live, now that I"m back in the states.
I bought Tmobile 4G hotspot first because they offer lower tiers of data, starting at 2 GB I think and they are prepaid, so the plan cancels automatically without having to call to cancel it.
Only received 2 bars and down was 6 and up barely 2.
Returned it and bought the ATT LTE myfi hotspot. I was resisting because it's bigger to carry around and the plan starts at 5 GB and while it's month to month, you have to call and cancel before your new billing cycle begins, else you will be charged.
This thing is fast. 8-10 down and 4-5 up.
So this will work for my needs. I will have to get used to carrying it around to use my phone, but I am only here max 2 weeks at a time.
UP next, I will experiment installing the hotspot sim into my Note. Even if this works, I notice I get a much stronger and better LTE signal on the myfi, than my galaxy note. maybe the note 2, will be better.

HTC One prepaid

I but the One outright at the T-Mo store today. I'm new to T-Mo. I want to use it with the prepaid plan. However, when I'm going online to activate the SIM that came with it, they ask for an activate code. Can't find that anywhere in the box, can anyone help?

$609 (before tax). Why?
The code is on the sim card that the sim was attached to, the barcode #'s at the bottom on the back

i assume your going to run the 30$ - 100min, unlimited txt, unlimited data (up to 5g) plan and use a VOIP service like grooveIP to tunnel through for phone service?
i've heard some widely varying stories about that. some say it works fine some say theres alot of lag and quality is quite poor. I'm not sure but i use my stuff for work so i cant take that chance.
Let me know how it goes if that IS the way your going

The SIM code is different from the activation code. I'm starting to think the box didn't come with an activation code, because they expect the rep to activate it to their "plan" when you get it. Going to go to the store later today.

They didn't SIM unlock it, but does it matter for now, since I'm going to use it on T-Mo? Apologies if that ends up being a stupid question. I've always been on CDMA, so new to dealing with SIM's
Update: I didn't know the $30 prepaid plan was only available online, this is why you cannot activate it in the store. I just purchased the activation kit for $10 and I'm going to activate it online when it comes.
Guess I'm gonna have to keep using my old phone for a couple days longer . Just wish I knew these prior to buying the new phone so I would've been ready. So convoluted T-Mo!

[Q] Moto E 2nd Gen Help Please

Newbie to smartphones needs some help.
I have an old Motorola flip phone that is using Verizon unlimited phone and text (about $34/mo total) and it is ready to die. It doesn’t have a sim card slot. I purchased the Moto E XT 1528PP from Best Buy (has not been turned on yet) and need some help to transfer my existing plan to the new phone without having to sign up for the pre-paid 6 month plan. I just want to have the ability to talk and text and be able to use the wireless capabilities WITHOUT a data plan, i.e., connect wirelessly to a hotspot or wireless modem. Can someone offer advice on the best way to do this? Do I need to buy some sort of postpaid micro sim card or do I need to do something else?
Thank you in advance for your help.
I guess your old phone is a CDMA one, that's why it doesn't have a SIM Card. I don't think there's a way to transfer the plan so I would contact Version and ask them what should you do.

VZ has a clear policy that states the phone needs to be on prepaid for 6 months before it can be moved to postpaid. If this were another carrier, say T-Mobile, you could switch phones every hour with none of this trouble.

Well, OP said it's a flip phone, so he must've had it for years right now. They would let him change to prepaid.

Maybe the loyalty department would, but regular service reps tend to be strict about policies. Also his plan is very old and may automatically change when he activates the phone for his line.

I finally wound up calling Verizon and to my surprise they changed the Moto E from prepaid to postpaid and transferred my existing phone number and existing plan (unlimited talk/text) to it with no changes to my billing. I will use the wifi features so as to avoid data charges. This seems to have worked for me. Let me know your thoughts and if you think this was a good outcome.
Yeah, it was a good outcome.

Can't find a T-Mobile Gear S anywhere.

Like the title says, I've looked in every T-Mobile store and they're not selling any since it's a "year old", just the S2. Went to Best Buy...they just sell Sprint and Verizon versions but you can't get them unless you get a contract with them. I've looked online, and I'm scared to purchase one because most just say "750" without the model at the end (for example 750T for T-Mobile). I've found a AT&T watch and was thinking of ordering it since most of you guys on here have said it's compatible with a T-Mobile sim, but you only get 2G speeds, or I can get prepaid such as Straight Talk or H20 as well. Any suggestions as to where I can purchase a T-Mobile Gear S? Can't find anything on Ebay or Amazon

I did, but he never replied. As for the prepaid sim, I can't find none of what they were talking about in this forum. I've looked for H20 and StraightTalk at my Wal-Mart, but there's no H20, and with StraightTalk, I don't know what card to get. They spoke of one expiring after 90 days (maybe that was the H20?) but every card there expires after 30 days, even if you don't use all the texting and calling minutes.

The AT&T $10 device plan only works if you already have a family shared plan with them. You also can't use it on T-Mobile's Wearable plan because T-Mo locks this plan to IMEIs of T-Mo version Gear S or Gear S2 only.
The Gear S is already over a year old. Most places already cleared them out for Gear S2. eBay is probably your only bet for any device of this age.

Yes you can. I read that many people did that. AT&T is supposed to supply an unlock code if you call, but I've seen that many people had different outcomes. Some were able to get it, some had to keep on calling nad persisting, and others had no luck. Although beware that in unlocking the device, when you go to another carrier (such as T-Mobile) that it will have 2g or HSPA+ speeds instead of 3G or even 4G since the bands are different or something like that.
I sold my unlocked ATT gear S last month, because I managed to grab an LG watch Urbane 2nd edition LTE before they took them off the market. For what it's worth, I bought mine from ATT, had it unlocked by ATT, and used it on Tmobile with the wearables plan for a year. (As soon as I put the sim card in my LG watch, it did something to my wearables plan and i could never get it reinstated. In general, unlocked ATT Gear s devices no longer work with the $5 Tmo wearables plan, but with any other regular Tmo sim card.)
Anyhow, in New England, I was getting 3G speeds sometimes, if I recall correctly.
To get the ATT Gear S unlocked, you need to have been an ATT postpaid cell customer at some point, and provide that respective phone number to them. If you have a friend who is a customer, they could submit the unlock request for you as well.
Otherwise, ATT forces you to "wait 90 days" during which time you have to pay for a plan with them.
There was also an Ebay seller who was selling unlock codes for around $10 if memory serves me well.
By the way, the regular retail price for the ATT version is cheaper by $50 than Tmo's, so definitely worth going that route.
It would be unbelievably helpful if you'd let us know how much you love it =), on a side note I does anybody have a bricked Gear S? I'll buy it =)

Yeah, AT&T's stupid 90 days plan. Way too much. I don't wanna be paying 50 dollars a month for a watch. I found a friend who has a watch that is 1 month old and was selling it so I brought it, and it's from T-Mobile too so it's a win, win. It's only 5 dollars a month (plus an addition 10 for insurance). AT&T is selling the watch right now for $199 outright. T-Mobile isn't selling it at all, but before they took it down it was going for $250. I went with T-Mobile because $199 plus tax comes out to $220. Then I got to put 30% down for AT&T's stupid plan plus an additional $20 or $30 dollars extra (forgot for what) which comes out to $76 dollars total. So add that to the $220. Then the following month I'm going to have to pay a one-time activation fee of $15 dollars, PLUS the service which is $50 dollars (but if you're already a customer with them it's $10 a month), PLUS if you haven't already finished paying off the watch, you're going to have to put down money for that before the 3 months is over. Too costly in my opinion. I just payed my friend $120 (cause he has $80 left due in his account so I'm paying off that) and then just the $15 bucks a month so I'm good.
I think my friend has a bricked Gear S, but he has to send that back since they gave him the one that I have right now lol.

If you mean the Urbane, it's mindblowingly awesome, with a battery life that's out of this world. My Gear S was great for the year I had it, but the Urbane is so much better; I've been using it daily for almost 3 months now.
The only updates Google needs to make is allow voice calls over BT and a way to manually update APN settings, both possible with the Gear S.
Don't buy an att gear s if you plan to use the android rom on it. Att locked the bootloader on their gear s and so far there is no way to unlock it so no rom for us.
I have a T-Mobile version and I shopped for it on my local Craigslist. You just have to be careful yet persistent. Ask for better photos and definitely take a copy of the ad with you when you go to check it out for hopefully your purchase. My seller had a warranty replacement and it is in near pristine condition. I have replaced his original watch band, thanks to eBay. And I do have a broke clip on the charger cradle that I will eventually replace as well.
Also, Swappa is an excellent place to purchase items. There's 2 sides, there's the Swappa.com and then there's Boneyard where you purchase stuff not able to be sold on regular Swappa like broken glass, missing parts and devices for parts. Google both. Hope this helps!! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Now, I did in fact have an AT&T branded Gear S that I tried, unsuccessfully, to get to operate on T-Mobile. I wanted the wearables sim card and I put T-mobile's in it. It would NOT work for me as I was told by many support levels (twitter, email, and phone) that the T-Mobile wearables sim card was not provisioned for the AT&T branded Gear S. I gave up and sent that version Gear S back, getting a full refund and purchased what I described in my opening of this post.

I bought an AT&T branded gear S from swappable a couple of months ago and I am using it with my wearable sim card without a problem. I already had the plan though with a tablet and cut down the sim put it in the gear and called tmobile and they turned it into a data and phone line for me as it was only a data line.

NIce. I found a really good deal on a AT&T Gear S but not sure I want to get it because my luck isn't that good. lol So your AT&T Gear S works exactly the same on T-Mobile then? I don't have a tablet plan so not sure what I would have to do to go the route you did.

So far it's been working great. But I already had the plan so I don't know if it would work. Call tmobile and see if it could work. I mean they turned my data only plan into a phone line

I know a T-Mobile manager. I called him today but he was off. He's worked his magic before. So let me get this straight your watch has it's own number and you get 4G speeds?
