Hi guys.
I really took my time and I have searched the whole forum, all the threads involving rooting and also googled the heck of it, but still I am not pretty 100% sure how should I root mine Z2 23.0.1.A.0.167 after update as in many threads I found different answers.
Could please someone point me how to root my Z2?
Specifications below:
- first time root
- no custom recovery
- bought as 4.4.2, now updated to 4.4.4 @23.0.1.A.0.167
- UK, unbranded
I would like to get root, have custom recovery, could flash custom roms/kernels, etc.
I will really appreciate any help.
Thanks.
1. Use flashtool to downgrade to 314 firmware (exclude data)
2. Root and install recovery
3. Flash 167 rom
4. Useflashtool to flash pre-rooted 167 firmware (excluding data and system)
This method would alow you to keep your bootloader locked
I recomend using the TA Backup tool to backup ur TA just incase you want to unlock your bootloader
(when you root your device on 314)

If you have a unlocked bootloader you can just flash a recovery and use it to flash A root zip

Thanks for the links.
I thought you can easily unlock bootloader via Sony code, as I checked mine in software info I would be able to do it, or am I wrong?
In case I have unlocked bootloader, I will just flash via flash tool for example the dual recovery, then flash prerooted rom and I am good to go right?
(when I will pass all of this I will write it over here)

One more question, any way to get root before flashing whole rom so I can run titanium backup before I wipe the whole thing?
Get your backup before the process.

hi all,
i've used flahtool and use the flash mode. my phone is in .62 firmware EU
i've used this flashtool package from a modded ICS firmware >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518563
- Flashtool package: Flashtool package This includes baseband .70 and userdata etc from official ICS
after using this flashtool package my phone do a boot loop
my phone is root and i've installed CWM
how to unbrick my phone ?
ps : my english is bad i'm french.
It must be because of the kernel you are using. I had the same problem with that ROM, I tried several kernels and only bootloops.
Try flashing this kernel via fastboot mode:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566871
Then flash ROM KA18 or any other ROM, I am using ICS from team xperia and works great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395192
You need to have an unlocked bootloader to boot custom ROMs. If your bootloader is not unlocked then you can look in the forum for an original ROM and flash it via flashtool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1258723.
tanks but my bootloader is locked for the moment i can unlock it...
i want to find a kernel for Android 2.3 for the firmware .62
i don' want to go in ICS for the moment
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258723
If you want to have your phone rooted, flash .42 then root and then use over the air update to go to .62
i get the MT15i_4.0.2.A.0.62_1246-9107.ftf
how to flash ?
Did you confirmed if your bootloader can be unlocked?
Type *#*#7378423#*#* to enter the service menu, then Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status, it should say "Bootloader unlock allowed Yes" if bootloader unlock is not allowed you cannot use fastboot method to unlock it.
sorry but i can't boot my phone
i'm remember is possible to unlock the bootloader
unlock bootloader allowed : yes

Then open flashTool and click on the flash icon, select flashmode. Then in the select folder section selet where you have the ftf file, click OK and follow the instructions on the screen.

Hy guys!
I came across the problem when i was trying new roms for my Neo. Whenever i flash a new rom I risk that it'll go bootloop because I'm on locked bl. If so i cannot reach recovery again because it is on the /system partition itself which is formatted in the process.
I just wanted to ask if somebody could make a flashable zip for our phones so when i flash a new rom I can flash the recovery straight after the rom.
Why don't u flash a stock rom -> unlock bl -> root to gain CWM -> install ROm
I think wating for sb making Custom Rom for u would take a long time
It's just my opinion :silly:
Install x-parts from the market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5wdnkuQ1dNaW5zdGFsZXIiXQ.. Anyway just make a backup before you flash the rom. Use Flashtool to flash stock firmware, root and install recovery. You can restore your backup from there.:silly:

Yes that would be great..they should include CWM in the rom itself..as in automatically install CWM after flashing rom..before the first boot..

yup thats the problem with locked bootloaders..but if u unlock it then custom kernels will have CWM built-in..

I know that if I unlock the bl I can flash custom kernels but in service menu I have the line: Bootloader unlock allowed: NO. In that case can I still use the testpoint method?
I know how can i install recovery on the rom itself but as I said the phone can get into bootloops after installations and in that case I have to flash stock, flash neov kernel, root flash original kernel install cwm and start the whole process from the beginning.

Hey guys,
I am new to the Z2 and Sony devices in general. I rooted and flashed Samsung and HTC devices before, so I am not a total beginner.
Basically what I wanna do is: Flash the eXistenz Rom with locked BL.
1. Flashtool
Okay, so I need to downgrade. I already downloaded the flashtool + a .314 firmware for my phone.
Do I leave the flashtool flashing options just at the defaults? I mean do I really don't wanna check things like partition and TA in the "exlude" field.
Wouldn't that mean that it is going to flash TA and re-partition the storage (doesn't really sounds like what I want). I read some threads,
but they're always like "Yeah, just click flash", so I thought I doublecheck.
2. Rooting
Okay, so theres many root methods out there, which one can you guys recommend? What root method does flashtool use?
3. Nut's
If I do all the above mentioned, I could just flash a ftf file and my phone would be completely stock right? Nut's is also some sort of hack which doesn't alter the original recovery in the recovery partition on my phone, right?
Thanks in advance.

1. yes leave flashtool options at default (it will wipe your internal storage)
TA partition isnt touchable realy, if your DRM keys exist they arent affected by using flashtool
2. Rooting depends on your firmware, 167 or newer isnt rootable via tool so you will have to folow a slightly longer task to root, easy root tool is recomended (check the info thread near the top of QnA section)
3. [NUT] Is a user who makes recovery for locked bootloaders, You need to be rooted to be able to install his recoveries
flashing a FTF will completly reset your device to stock
[NUT]'s Recovery for locked bootloader doesnt affect the boot or Recovery partition hence its ability to run on a locked bootloader

This is how I did it with mine I included the rooting process too.
1.) Download flashtool and install all the drivers that is provided by flashtool (They're in the Flashtool/drivers folder in your C drive, I believe) In order to install the drivers, you have to disable windows 8 or 10's driver signature verification (to do that, open up settings then click "update and recovery then click the "recovery" option then click "advanced reboot" I don't know if the process is the same for Windows 8 though).
2.) Download the .112 firmware using XpeiraFirm (It's included in flashtool. You can use the commercial and Journalists one).
3.) Backup your data. (Text messages, call logs, music, photos).
4.) Flash the firmware using flash tool.
5.) If you lost your imei after the downgrade process, go ahead and do a factory reset. (It's somewhere in settings.).
6.) Download the rootkit and the TWRP(custom recovery) installer from this guide. Place them in the folder where you have the ADB and fastboot executable and then run the rootkit first then run the TWRP installer after.
7.) If you wish to update your firmware, just refer to the link in number 6 as there, you'll find the pre-rooted zip which you can use to update your phone to the latest firmware.
Good luck!

You're welcome. I edited the post by the way
Hi all, I just recently got a Z2( first sony device in almost 10 years). It is on 23.5.A.0.575 build. I guess it is still locked bootloader.
I am wondering if anyone could give me a general idea of what to do to root, unlock bootloader( if it is necessary), Recovery and install rom.
I have been tinkering some other android devices and I know how to backup/install rom. But with so much info floating around the forum I kind of lost direction of what to do for the z2.
I appreciate anyone's input.
Thank you.
attachment is the phone infomation. I am in the U.S. and using AT&T as my wireless carrier.

Thank you so much, hariskh. I am reading all the threads you gave me now.
One quick question, someone else mention downgrade to LP 5.1.1. Is there any difference if I downgrade to KK or LP? I would for sure install a MM rom on top of that. Will the downgraded firmware matter?
Again, thank you for your help.
