[ANNOYING] Galaxy S3 - Screen takes a long time to turn on! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 32GB Unlocked, is having a rather annoying problem.
When I press the home or power button to turn the screen on, it takes about 2-3 seconds for the screen to actually light-up so I can see my lockscreen.
I have modified the device (software side), but it did the same when it was 100% stock before I hacked it up.
MODIFICATIONS:
TWRP Recovery
CyanogenMod 11 - M12 (did the same on M11 AND on stock)
Rooted
I can upload a video if you guys want me to.
Any ideas?

It's normal, get used to it.

OK, I'll just have to get used to it. I am relieved that it is not a hardware problem.

Apart from that, the problem is hardware side, it's the method how Exynos CPU's work, so yes, you'd get used to it.

Or maybe too many background apps. Mine jumps right up and start running. There is another one, the same.
Quit any RAM managers or "game boosters" if you are using any.

The only apps I have installed are a few games, Super SU, Root Browser and WhatsApp.
I am running CyanogenMod 11, but it did the same when it was 100% stock. I also completely wiped and reflashed my phone to no avail.
My RAM usage is just about half of the total amount. I will never install any RAM managers or task killers. They seem to cause a lot of problems.

[Q-ICS] Facebook too much CPU activity?

Since I'm on ICS I have this strange problem with the official FB client.
As Soon as i start FB my processor gets pumped up to the maximum of 1ghz. Even when i click the Home Button and start up Voltage Control i can see the processor is at max.
Only when i close FB (with task manager or long press back key on CM9) the processor goes down to 200mhz and stays there...
effect : as soon as i start FB and don't quit it right my battery will be drained in a short time..
Since the first ICS release I am googling this problem but can't find any information about this. Now I'm a little bit fed up with it, thats why i'm posting it here...does anyone else recognize this? is there a workaround?
thanks for the help...
check your battery info, get cpuspy to see what speed your cpu has been going at and the deepsleep and betterbatterystats for wakelocks etc
this guy has similar issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571518
i already checked with all mentioned tools.
strange thing is there is no wakelock... it's only when screen is on but application is in background.
i have this problem on different ICS Roms. at the moment i am on cm9 and it is still present. when i check with "top" in terminal i can see that facebook.katana is at the top keeping the cpu pretty busy.
with samsung roms and the original samsung task manager i can see that it's always using over 50% cpu power.
i tried older versions. tried deinstalling. nothing helps.
i just dont know what it is doing in the background. cpuspy shows me that the cpu is mostly in 1ghz and deepsleep.
edit: i double checked and its also killing deepsleep. sometimes it enters sometimes not...

Same here. I've Galaxy S2 and since update to ICS official firmware have i have this problem. I noticed that all rom that have as baseline official Samsung ICS have this problem, while other (e.g. CyanoMod 9) don't have. The only fix is to kill application from task manager.
Which is your device?

It happens to me on cm9 also... Every ICS Rom.
So No one has a solution for US?
Just to let you guys know that this also happens on my Nexus S with ICS 4.0.4 stock
In fact it happened also with Gingerbread... it started happening when Facebook made a major app overhaul to what is currently the new "user experience" for the past 4-5 months or so... that's when Watchdog which I have installed suddenly started complaining
Sorry for digging out this bit older thread, but have you found a solution yet ? I got the same problem since i changed to ics roms - first sammy leaks, then official, now nightlies. Tried wiping cache, dalvik, userdata, reinstalled app, ... to no effort.
Thinking about coding a facebook-killer widget. Take a look on this screens, 2 hours of cpu time for nothing...

I just use Watchdog what normally complains about Facebook a few minutes after I stop using it. Then I just kill the process from within Watchdog.
Using the browser is fine though.. however some things don't work so well in the mobile browser version.
To me this problem is quite symptomatic however from what I read on the internet it doesn't happen all the time.. even sometimes for me it doesn't stay clogging the cpu but most of the times it does.
I guess they will fix it one day but I wouldn't hold my breath that it will be soon. I read that on the iPhone the way they designed the app is pretty bad (it's sort of a skin over the actual mobile website). For Android it might be the same..
That the facebook devs are coding big BS (sorry) is really known.
Can you provide me a link to the google play site of Watchdog ? Too many results, i don't know which one... thanks

I'm using the XXLA2 radio that came with the yakju update. But I got the same problem with the XXKK6 yakjuxw radio
smells more like programmer error than phone configuration..
since i am using foxhound rom (sniper wolf), the facebook app (and same for all other apps that dont automatically close) is automatically ended when closed with the back button...
Seems that it's a problem with the official ICS ROMs. Try Friendcaster and see if that's any better.

even by closing with a short press on the back button it will end the process
i uninstalled facebook for this
friends caster is A LOT better than facebook app
personally I didn't like Friendcaster. It was smoother in operation that Facebook's official app but it had some quirks (now can't remember them but there were a few things you couldn't do as opposed to FB's official app). But what stopped me from using it was the extended awake times I was getting even without automatic refreshes set up.
Haven't got a single problem

[Q] SGS2 with CM9 Freezes suddenly. ROM problem?

I periodically find my phone in a frozen state/shut down (at least once a day or during the night)
I have the latest nightly CM9. I'm wondering if the freezes are caused by the ROM or i have some hardware problem or an rouge app or something.
Is there a way to see a log history of all processes so i could pin down what's happening just before a freeze? is there a better way to do this?
Thanks all

The biggest problem in cm9 is when you set your voltages/cpu too low, this can cause your device to lock up when turning it on again/opening lockscreen. Another problem which is usually the case is that you have a misbehaving app. The easiest way to counter these little niggles I have found is to do a complete wipe, format your sd card, format system etc, then attach sgs2 to pc via usb, mount your sd card and transfer cm9rom.zip to sd card. Only then flash your cm9 to your sd card in recovery after unmounting and disconnecting from pc of course. This lets you kind of narrow down the problem as you will know that you do not have any files/folders/apps from a previous rom install that are causing issues. I always do this when installing a rom, even if it is just a nightly update, since I used to get problems like yours, I do this now and have 98% less issues. But what I think you have most likely done is to underclock your device too greatly. Also, if you are using cpu profiles, make sure you are not setting screen off profile too low, otherwise it will most certainly freeze on open. Anyways, cover these bases and you should be golden. It is not a rom problem.

[Q] Galaxy player 4.0 randomly has crash and reboots after heavy usage.

The way my GP 4.0 works is odd...It's as if after every reboot, the player has a certain amount of fuel (and no I'm not referring to the battery). After usage, that fuel gets burned down and the player starts running sluggishly and eventually either freezes up and forces me to do a forced shut down or it reboots itself. I usually can't keep the thing on without a reboot for longer than 3 days. It's not a major issue, but it makes playing games rough because sometimes in the middle of a game, the player just freezes up and reboots. The battery typically never goes beyond 100 degrees F, unless I'm in a hot car or something.
Anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions? I've heard of something called Lagfix that does something like trimming or something of the sort...Yeah, noob here. Would that fix me up? Running gingerbread 2.3.5 stock rom and kernel.

try a factory reset and dont install anything after.
if it doesnt seem to hang, reinstall your apps slowly, one by one to see which one is causing the problem
Your player is using to much ram so it's going to restart. Use the task manager to kill any app you aren't using.

2 problems with that. 1. in the task manager, no tasks are seen running. I almost always have around 70 mb of ram free no matter what. 2. if I use a task killer (such as advanced task killer), I can kill apps that are running (such as the ebay app...Not sure why that even runs in background), but they come back on within seconds....do I just need to uninstall apps?
I will suggest you try using advance task manager to monitor your applications, rather then the system's task manager.

But when I kill a task in advanced task killer to kill unwanted running apps, they come back on after like 5 seconds. However, these are apps that I'd like to have installed, such as ebay, weather, and youtube. Do you suggest just uninstalling as many as possible?
I would do a complete reset and then slowly install your apps. This way u can see what is causing the problem.
And don't install unecassary apps

Are you using a custom rom? You shouldn't have 70mb all the time. You should have at least 162mb when it just starts booting up, and then 100mb- 120mb when using it. ADW Launcher is kinda heavy on memory. Try Holo Launcher or one that doesn't use a ton of ram. I remember on mine it was Go Launcher using too much ram, and it was causing it to stutter. Also I suggest uninstall (or just doing a complete restore) some of the apps. Our players suck with managing ram imo lol.

Stock rom and stock kernel. Would custom ones be better?
I do get the around 160 mb of ram when booting up. Actually, I do have around 90 mb of ram available after the boot up. Well, the thing is, is that adwlauncher has almost made it all better. It just runs so much smoother than touchwiz and i like it a lot. However, I can try another I suppose. Well that sucks. Should I start using a task killer and having it auto kill or something? I mean I don't really wanna uninstall youtube, or ebay, but I guess I could uninstall some other stuff.
Okay, so last night I uninstalled some apps that according to advanced task killer were running in the background. I've also uninstalled Lookout just to free up some more ram. now I get about 90-100 mb of ram when idle, and things are working all right for now. I'll report how it performs after a day or two...It's just a shame that the galaxy player has so little ram that I'm forced to uninstall some apps that won't even give me the option to stop them from running the background.

Custom Kernels, and roms help the player a lot imo. I would at least flash a custom kernel, because it boots the total ram from 342 to 352mb. Yeah I think that since you have a lot of apps installed it is bogging down the player. Uninstall the apps you don't need, or rarely use. I know I wished samsung would have properly upgraded our players. Instead we got the 3.6, and 4.2 which do some things better, but other things worse. They made the 5.8 but to me it's not worth the money.

Okay so unfortunately, I just got another crash/reboot. I was playing Draw something with my sister when suddenly it began to hang for about 4 seconds and then just reboot. This is the normal crash I used to get, and always get after about 3 days of having the thing on and using it. I had plenty of open ram when this happened. before I opened draw something, I had about 100 mb of ram.
Uninstalling apps has cut down on the amount of lag and hangs I get, but I still get this stupid reboot deal after a while...Is there any way to make this stop? I mean I could just do a factory reset, but I almost don't even think it's worth having to redo everything just to fix rebooting once every 2 or 3 days.

If your galaxy player is rooted I would try installing a custom kernel and see what happens. Because 1) It gives you the ability to overclock to 1.2 ghz (If you buy tegrak or set cpu you can overclock to 1.3 or even 1.5ghz). This helps with lag and memory issues from my experience, and 2) You can make a backup of your files on your device using ClockWorkMod, so you don't have to redo everything if factory resetting doesn't work.
But most likely I think you are going to have to just do a factory reset. Usually that fixes the memory problem since it resets everything on the player. But be warned flashing kernels and roms does void your warranty and can mess up your player if not done right. However, there's tons of tutorials on how to do it. If you like it stock, , iJimaniac has made a custom rom called R.E.D.D it uses the stock kernel with a modified version of the stock rom.
Also do you mind taking a screenshot or picture of your taskmanger and apps?

It is indeed rooted. However, can't I already overclock to 1.2 ghz? I mean I have tegrak and it lets me overclock to that already. I don't even mind the CPU speed now, it's just the random reboots I get that bother me. And if it needs to be said, I really cannot remember if my player has always done this...
So unless flashing a kernel or rom is actually gonna make my player run smoother (I've heard that stock stuff runs smoothest because it's made for that specific device), I don't really see a need to do it. I'm perfectly fine with the way it is stock...Just not fine with the occasional bits of lag I get (temple run is basically not playable on my player, because even the slightest hang will screw you up) and the stupid reboots.
Sure. You want a screenshot of advanced task killer open (showing all the apps that are currently running)? As for apps, how do you want me to get a picture of all those? It'd take several pictures because I'd have to scroll through the apps list and take multiple pictures.

[Q] jelly bean worst version !

hi
i have galaxy s3 with JB 4.1.2 rooted I9300 rom Poland
and my problems start
1 . Even after cleaning and after WIPE high fine
He first 600 of 833MB
After a few minutes he 720 phone starts to feel like a slow
I go to games and everything works great no problem
But I hear songs song stuck in another and back again lodged a second
The battery runs down very quickly because of the high RAM
2. My alarm does not always ring
Once I woke up and saw it only vibrate
Even once someone called me and was just a vibrate
He calls me back and then have a song
3. Someone calls me take a few minutes to load the contact's name
4. My friend sent me a picture that SMS is not via software or something.
MMS.
So he sent and I do not get the picture he sent me.
If he sends only standard message I get. But if a picture is "MMS" I do not get.
Why?
and more problems!
i just want to back to ICS Seriously this version was only one problem the device heats up quickly and that's it.
Everything works great for me there is no problem. The device was amazing.
But in JB device always stuck full of problems
Do you have a solution to all these problems?
Do not tell me to delete just do WIPE or go to CM10 or something
Or you saying wait Android 5?
Sounds like you may have a bad app or bad something else. I have been on JB since the leaks and they are awesome compared to the ICS versions.
But you may want to download the most recent version and install it clean.

Sounds like you may have a bad app or bad something else. I have been on JB since the leaks and they are awesome compared to the ICS versions.
But you may want to download the most recent version and install it clean.

ever time i change my rom i do full wipe "everthing like new phone buyin now"
and i have backup for titanium backup ok
and all my app from google play i buy apps beecause I support developers
and i now what app is good or bad.
OK if your using titanium back up, only restore the app not the data.
There could be some old data that is messing it up. Like I said, its actually better to start all over and redownload all apps and start new.

Can't say I share your experiences. Jelly bean is fine.
Do a full wipe and just don't restore any data or app...
That should fix all your problems

JB rom is pretty fine according my experiences, however if you are not satisfied with the stock one try a modded rom.
Regarding the RAM I wouldn't worry at all. Android takes care of the problem and will kill apps before ram gets overfilled as far a I understood. RAM I guess isn't the problem for any lags. I recommend to try different Kernels istead, Boeffla for example which works pretty fine with my rom.
Also battery drain is not a RAM problem it is caused by applications working in the background which suck the battery. There is a nice program in the App store called Greenify that allows you to fine tune this.
Format sdcard system data cache preload .
Flash whatever firmware you want via Odin .
Do not install apps or restore TB .
Test for one week problems then return to service .

Wakeup to lock screen delay S4 Android 5.0.1

I have recently started have a problem when "waking up" my Galaxy S4, rooted, with Android 5.0.1. Here is what happens:
Press the "wake up" key (power or home)
Lock screen appears and quickly disappear
Last screen used (home screen, app. etc.) may flash
A blank home screen wallpaper appears (no icons) for a short period of time (about 2 seconds)
Last screen used appears again for a short time. (about 2 seconds)
Lock screen finally appears and the device can be unlocked
This started happening within the last two to three weeks. I have tried uninstalling of freezing applications like Facebook and others that might wake up when the phone does and grab focus. Same with apps, like weather apps that have items in the notification area. I have uninstalled and re-installed Nova launcher. I've killed applications. All to no avail. I have run traces with 3C Toolbox and the only thing that appears to be implicated is "System UI" - but I have made no changes to the OS since going to 5.0.1 (just stock, rooted) some time ago.
So … I'm baffled and I would welcome assistance from anyone who is seeing the same thing or anyone that might have a solution.
Thank you.

I guess that this is stock rom.
One thing samsungs touchwiz is full of bloat apps, too much stuff which uses memory, take a ram and spend cpu cycles, that will burn up your device (less performance a d battery overtime)
Mine sugestion is to flash for ehample Cyanogen mod, and you will see the difference

Thank you for your suggestion, and I have wanted to do that, but I didn't think there was a version of Cyanogen Lollipop for the Verizon S4 (SCH-I545). Can you point me to it?

Solution
Thanks to all for reviewing this post. Just to let you know, I have found the problem and solution. First I restarted in "Safe Mode" and confirmed that the problem is not in the operating system. Using the "ES Task Manager" application I killed applications. It was strange to me that "Indrix Traffic" was running and I hadn't started it. I killed it and tried power off/power on. Bingo! I uninstalled Indrix Traffic and it has been fine since then. I like Indrix so will consider re-installing it, but I was very happy to find the solution.

In fact, I think that only restarting in Safe Mode is enough to solve the problem. I had same problems started some weeks ago and couldn't find a cure till now. Tried to do what you did and (of course, I didn't have Indrix) I just sleep and wake-up the phone, seeing that in safe mode all was OK. After restarting also, restart normally and all was ok also. So just going to Safe mode once fix the problem, no need to uninstall nothing.
Can somebody explain that?
