Xperia Tablet Z Questions and Rooting - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
You'll have to forgive me if this has been asked around but I'm a complete noob in terms of rooting. Like all noobs do they research as much as they can before they stuff anything up.
I have found a link in the forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-tablet-z/development/root-sp321-ftf-10-5-1-0-283-t2873377, which instructs the rooting or recovery on the stock 4.4.4 firmware.
The instructions doesnt seem to point out on the boot loader status, from what I've read if its unlocked I'm allowed to put any kind of ROM something like Cyanogenmod or PACMAN and etc.
Though the catch is the manufacturer would not acknowledge your warranty as the custom ROM may work the components above the norm. Does this root process involve unlocking the bootloader?
I prefer not to have it unlocked as I'm still under warranty. Also I dont think Sony Xperia Tablet Z comes with some form of recovery is this correct? I hold the volume button and power and nothing pops just normal booting.
So if I can get that clarified that would be great. I am aware that rooting would make my tablet vulnerable to security, but that is if I install some fishy software or browsing some not so safe websites. I shouldn't have any problems if I just use it general use like office and emails.
I would like to root my device so that I can have the apps from Google Playstore write to my SD card, the first party apps can write to SD but dont have amazing features compared to a third party. I basically dont want to stuff the rooting. If there are some pointers I am happy to get some feedback.
Thanks for reading my lengthy scenario
Cheers

If you already have Android 4.4.4 build 10.5.1.A.0.283 installed, all you have to do is the following steps. Make sure you use the kernel files that are for your tablet model.
1. Put the tablet into Flash Mode.
2. Use Flashtool to install the 10.5.A.0.230 kernel only.
3. Reboot the tablet into Normal Mode.
4. Install and run the Towelroot exploit.
5. Install SuperSU (I recommend the Pro version).
6. Put the tablet into Flash Mode again.
7. Use Flashtool to install the 10.5.1.A.0.283 kernel only.
8. Reboot the tablet into Normal Mode.
The tablet will now have root access.

Thanks for the help Cat McGowan, this process is assumed when the bootloader is locked? Also when you say into "flash mode" what does that mean?

Yes, the steps work with the boot loader locked. The boot loader does not need to be unlocked to gain root access. "Put the tablet into Flash Mode" means put the tablet into the mode where a file can be flashed to the tablet.
Flash Mode
1. Power off the tablet.
2. Connect a USB cable to the tablet. Do not connect the other end of the USB cable to a computer.
3. Press and hold the tablet's VOLUME DOWN button.
4. Connect the other end of the USB cable to a computer where USB drivers and Flashtool are installed.
5. Wait until the tablet's notification light flashes red-green once, then release the tablet's VOLUME DOWN button.
The tablet will now be in Flash Mode.
To exit Flash Mode, disconnect the USB cable.

Thank you for explaining this, I'll give this a shot when I get time. On another note, where would I be able to download the stock ROMs? Do I just search through this forum in hopes of getting a clean ROM?

Yes, use the forum's search feature to find a FTF (FlashTool File) that is a stock ROM specifically for your tablet model and region. BTW, including your tablet model and region information somewhere in your posts (e.g., in your signature) would be beneficial when asking for advice or assistance.

Thanks again for the help Cat McGowan, you have been a great help, I'll look into this in the weekend.

I'm currently on Android 4.4.4 build 10.5.1.A.0.283. I have already flashed 10.5.A.0.230 kernel using flash mode. But after that i'm unable to run the Towelroot exploit because my WiFi is disabled. Can anyone please advice me?

By "unable to run", do you simply mean you cannot run TowelRoot, or do you mean you cannot install TowelRoot because your Wi-Fi is disabled (why?)? If it is the latter, try connecting your tablet to a computer and using ADB to install tr.apk.

My apologies, what i meant is that i'm unable to install TowelRoot because WiFi is disabled.

Just a quick one, didnt get a chance in the weekend but the Towelroot exploit is an app that you grab from https://towelroot.com/? and SuperSU can be downloaded from playstore? Also why would I need SuperSU? Is it for my own protection? so no apps can do any wishy-washy things on my tablet?
Cheers

Yes. Use your tablet's web browser to go to towelroot.com and click on the large λ symbol to download tr.apk to your tablet. After downloading tr.apk, install and run it (make it rain).

Gaining root access grants YOU administrator rights; SuperSU grants APPS administrator rights (i.e., root access).

[Q] Rooting offcial firmware 10.4.b.0.109

Hi Guys
I recently bought a Tablet Z and am currently running the latest official 10.4.b.0.109 firmware for Wifi models.
I am aware that there are guides for rooting the firmware version before this as well as upgrading a rooted device to the latest version but I can't seem to find a guide for rooting my current official firmware from scratch.
I'd like to be able to do this so I can run 'root-only' apps and be able to turn off the screen whilst using an MHL adapter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I did this a week ago, and what a carry on I had, I thought i bust my tablet
I downgraded to .370 version using official firmware with flashtool, then I rooted using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17_perf-event-exploit (this is the easy part)
Then I used .109 version firmware (stripped ftf and flashable zip) - this is where it went wrong as I got into a boot loop
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276
I used both DE versions (German) for the flash/install - still works on UK tablet
I think there is a specific order to install busybox before or after dual recovery - this might be where it went wrong for me.
I also used an older version of dual recovery, (TabZ-lockeddualrecovery2.7.94-BETA.installer) and have yet to flash to the latest version
Sorry this is a bit muddled.
I just got my tab a couple days ago I guess I screwed up upgrading from 370 to 109. Following along closely to this thread
Sent from my SGP311 using Tapatalk
This is a guide that I wrote to enable root on Android version 4.3, build number 10.4.1.B.0.109 for SGP311. Follow at your own risk. I will not be responsible for damage to your Xperia Tablet Z! I am going by memory and XDA posts I have re-read.
Please read this first then follow the steps!!
1. Firstly you need to ensure you have the drivers installed for your tablet, so you could install Sony PC Companion http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
2. On your tablet make sure that Developer options is enabled (if not, press About tablet in the tablet settings menu several times), USB debugging is ticked and Verify apps over USB. Also turn on Unknown sources in Security settings
3. Assuming that the tablet is running version 10.4.1.B.0.109 you need to downgrade to version.370
4. Download and install Flashtool by @Androxyde http://www.flashtool.net/download.php - install this to your C: drive
5. Download the official .370 (I used SGP311_10.1.C.0.370 DE_Unbranded.ftf) firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2402863 thanks to @DevMark. This file should be placed inside the firmwares folder of Flashtool and thanks to @ donedos for his initial suggestion
6. Download the rooting kit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2333566. Thanks to @DooMLoRD
7. It is suggested that a backup is carried out on the tablet as this flash/root will wipe the data from it – I never did this, as I was quite happy to install apps/.apk again, and I had a lot of crap on my tablet anyway
8. Open up Flashtool, power off the tablet, and plug the usb cable into the tablet.
9. With the tablet still turned off press the volume down button, and plug the usb cable into your PC, this should get your tablet into flash mode
10. There is a lightning bolt symbol on top left corner of Flashtool, click this, and two options should pop up. I think you click the top one; if so, you will be prompted to locate the .ftf file, select the .370 file. If this file is not visible, you probably need to select the second option that popped up!
11. The tablet should be flashing now, and takes a few minutes or so. Instructions will appear in Flashtool to unplug and power on your device.
12. It will take a while for your tablet to turn back on; when it does you might need to carry out the actions again in 2. above. Just make sure you are running firmware .370 now instead of .109
13. Now connect you tablet again to USB, device drivers might install again. Open up/extract DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17 and click the runme_win.bat file and follow the instructions – your tablet should now be rooted. Check for the Super SU app in your app list, or if it’s not there install from Play Store.
14. Download the file Xperia Tablet Z (SGP311) 10.4.1.B.0.109 VMo De from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276, thanks goes to @bernddi . Extract the file so there are two files (SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_VMo De_stripped.ftf and SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_VMo De.zip)
15. Download and use this file http://www.winmd5.com/ to verify the md5 checksum matches the .109 files you downloaded.
16. If everything is okay, place the large zip file onto the root of your external memory card, and the .ftf file into the firmwares folder of Flashtool (later on don’t mix this file up with the .370 file)
17. Download the correct version of XZDualRecovery file for your tablet, – thanks to @[NUT]. I first tried the most recent version, but had problems with flash and root, so then I tried the older version TabZ-lockeddualrecovery2.7.86-BETA.installer. Files are linked from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606.
18. Download and Install BusyBox from the Playstore, and run the app, then install again to your Tablet (using default options I believe) – this install failed first time for me, if same happends with you try again until it works
19. Connect your .370 rooted tablet to your PC, and run the DualRecovery file by clicking on install.bat – this will install the recovery to your tablet
20. Your tablet should power back on, or you’ll need to turn it on yourself. Make sure stuff works fine, you might need to carry out No. 2 again, I’m not sure
21. You should also have a file called NDR Utils on your tablet, if not install from the PlayStore, and run this. The option to boot into Philz Touch Recovery should be visible, select this option and reboot. You can reboot by pressing power up, while the tablet is turning on, but I have problems getting this to work. NDR makes it much easier
This is where it might get risky. It appears that the older version of DualRecovery does not have the option to verify the md5 checksum, but if the file winmd5free said the numbers match you should be okay
22. In recovery you need to select Install Zip, then select install zip from storage/sdcard1, then go to the zip file, and press it. The flashing of version .109 should begin – it takes a while
23. After the flash you must power off the device, DO NOT reboot
I believe this is where I got into a boot loop, and I am not certain how I got out of it. This link might help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703882. Thanks to @Cat McGowan. When I finally got out of the boot loop, I started all over again from step No.8!
24. Open up Flashtool again, and flash the stripped ftf file like you did in No. 9 and No. 10
25. Follow the instructions to disconnect and power on your tablet, you should now have version .109 and still be rooted after the initial setting up of the tablet.
Please let this work!
If there is anyone reading this that spots an error or omission please post it
grat guide, Aid777, thanks.
I had already done exactly as you explain but I did not delete anything when I did the downgrade and I found everything working.
Now I'm still stuck with the firmware because I want to install the correct localization of the 109 version (I downloaded the ftf from Sony) and I'm trying to figure out how to do the zip and ftf whit this...
But i'v a question..what is the purpose of installing busybox?

actually it is already integrated in recovery package (/xbin/busybox), so there is no need to install it manually.
Well my tab went tits up a little while back, and I followed my guide and it worked
worked perfect for me... thank you very much

Use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53448680
Depending your current firmware you may need to downgrade it to make it work. Latest directly rootable firmware is .314 if I can remember correctly. When achieved root install custom recovery and update to latest prerooted firmware for your device.

I share your pain man. There is no sticky on the "how to" root.
I can only provide a synopsys of the whole thing though. I hope its gonna b enough.
There are a few prequisite steps that need to be taken. There is no order on the following list.
1. Download the very latest flashtool
2. Make sure the adb drivers are installed so the device can communicate with the computer at the required level. I think that there is an option on the latest flashtool that will install necessery drivers.
3. Do not be upgraded to latest 4.4.4 version. If so, find a a 4.4.2 version for 511l512 and downgrade to said version.
Now try these steps on the following order:
1. Enable unknown sources from the Security tab within Settings.
2. In Settings enter About Tablet tab, scroll to the end and tap multiple times on the build number until you get a confirmation pop up that you are now a developer. Go back to Settings mainmenu, navigate once again to the bottom and enter Developer tab. Enable Usb Debugging.
4. Reconnect the tablet with the PC and you should get information about the tablet. Try pressing the Root button at the menu bar.
Thats all i can think on top of my head. I hope i helped.

I'm guessing unlocked bootloader is necessary to do this? I think you forgot to mention that in your post.

Cannot Unlock Bootloader using FlashTool

Hi,
Try as I may. I cant unlock my Tablet Z LTE (SGP321) bootloader.
Im using FlashTool 0.9.18.4 and am currently on stock KK 4.4.4. firmware (SGP321_10.5.1.A.0.283_CE.ftf)
Everytime I try to ulock the bootloader it fails with FlashTool message that drivers need to installed
I've trird installing the drivers via the \FlashTool\Drivers directory.......but always get the following message "DPInst.exe doe not execute on your current operating system" - I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as I'm desperate to install CM KK 4.4.4 and get rid of the Sony stuff.
Thanks in advance

don't use flashtool for unblocking BL (cause you can use instruction from Sony's site), or install drivers properly: look for dpinst.exe in your temp folder and set compability mode with WinVista in it's properties and it will install properly.

Thanks for your reply/suggestion. Unfortunately I do not have the "set compatibility" option in DPInst.exe properties. I have found 2 x dpinst.exe and 2 x dpinst64.exe files on my system.
I've tried using the Sony site instructions but
1. When i attch the tablet to my laptop in Fastboot mode (Vol up), and type "fastboot devices" at the cmd prompt, i dont get any indication that my tablet has been/is recognised (see scrrenshot 1)
2. When I run the unlock command using the unlock code obtained from Sony, command line sticks at "waiting for device" (screenshot 2)
i'm at a loss as to whats wrong \ what Im doing wrong
All / any suggestions welcomed as am desperate to install CM11/12.

Check that your tablet's fastboot drivers are installed correctly in device manager on windows. I haven't done this on the tablet z (yet), but if you do not have the drivers installed on a nexus you wont see any device in the fastboot devices option.
So i would suggest you download the correct drivers (preferably from sony, but google drivers might also work), and check that the device manager dont have any unknown devices (tablet z) and if you do not try reinstalling the driver by uninstalling the current one and getting the correct one from sony or the google drivers.

Any suggestions welcomesed
Use flashtool and simply flash any stock version on top.
Alternatively, you can use some non stock ROM, but for that your first need to install the custom recovery via fastboot.

If your stuck in a bootloop i would suggest trying and flash recovery through flashtools and see if you can clear dalvik cache in the custom recovery.
it might help.
but otherwise do as the others say and flash a custom rom (CM preferably).

hanks for you help.
I have rooted and unlocked the boot loader of my SGP321 (WiFi/LTE).
But every time I install CM12 (flashed zip via TWRP), I lose Root......and as far as I can see, there's no way back from that, bar a complete re-install of stock (KK444)
Really frustrated as have wanted to flash CM and get rid of the Sonly bloatware (example: of 2gb internal memory, the stock firmware leaves only c.500mb free....thats just plain ridiculous. Compared to CM12 which leaves 1.7 GIGS free.
any suggestions.......?

CM12 should have root built in, check developer options for it on your device.
If not then just flash SuperSU.zip from chainfire (i prefer chainfire's version of super user).
Chainfire's SuperSU is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
please note that i have not tested this on a Tab Z but it should work.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Really appreciated. I've gone intp developer options.....but what am i looking for?
[EDIT] In Developer Options, and under "Root Access" it says "Disabled"
[EDIT 2] Downloaded a RootChecker and it tells me I'm not rooted
I'm totally frustrated.....have been trying to install CM12 for the last 6 hours!!!!
NUT (duallockedrecovery) has done a fantastic job developing the xzdr.........but i have to say that, in common with a lot of devs.... not very good at writing nstructions.
I'm an IT manager and often train staff in systems etc, including writing user guides. When writing guides/instructions, I ALWAYS assume that the end user KNOWS NOTHING......and so the guides/etc are very detailed. Yes, it takes a while to write them, but feedback shows its the right track to take.
Almost all the articles on flashing CM12/using Fastboot etc lack small, but important, details......!!! I'm still not really sure if i should be using TabZ-lockeddualrecovery or XZ-lockeddualrecovery..........!!!!!!
i've got as far as I have by pulling together numerous XDA posts in order to get a (full'ish) picture of what to do. Devs, pls make your instructions clearer for people who aren't devs. Rant over
My current position is that my Xperia Tablet Z is
1. On KitKat 444 (Firmware ver. 283)
2. Rooted
3. Bootloader unlocked
4. SuperSU & SuperSu Pro installed
How do i get from this position to a successful CM12 install?
I have CM12 Nightly (7th May), GApps 5.0x Minimal ready and waiting....
I'm not a stupid person, but trying to do this has made me feel like a complete idiot.....help!!!

Yea i know what you mean by guides not being written to include alot of details and missing out on small stuff that might be important, but anyway.
In the Developer Options there should be a box called Root Access, and it should be defaulted to Disabled ones you have installed CM12 for the first time, its just a matter of enabling this.
Im guessing you already know how to enable Developer Options, but if you dont here is how:
Go to About Device (or Phone/Tablet) and click on Build number a bunch of times (i think its 5-6 times), and the developer options should be visible in the settings.
If that dosent work you might want to try and flash the SuperSU binary through recovery, the zip to use is the one found in chainfires xda-thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
But here is the direct link for the zip https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Just put that on your device internal memory (or SD-Card) and flash it in your recovery of choice, it should work in CWM, TWRP and Odin (but you dont have a samsung so the last one dosent matter).
This should install the SuperSU app, and its basic su binary onto your CM12 rom.
In both cases i would recommend you install root checker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck) and see if root is available to you.
Also to note is that the Root Access option built into CM12 isnt that customizable and i would still recomend you install SuperSU, but if the Root Access option is working you can just download the SuperSU application from the play store and let it install SU binary and then you can disable CM12's built in root option ones you make sure the SuperSU was installed correctly.
Thanks so much for your help/patience......but i'm afraid im giving up (for now).
Will try again in a few days......so its back to rooted stock 444
By the way, why have CM decided to go with their own (as good as useless) recovery????
I forgot to say that you've helped fill in a few more gaps for me in respect of this i.e. flashing SU; changing Root Access in Dev. Options etc.
These are the things that all the articles ive read FAILED to mention.
Thanks so much

I have also been in the dark about this stuff before, and im still not used to other manufacturers style of rooting and unlocking the bootloader (sony is the next best after Nexus) since samsung and the others usually you have a harder time unlocking and rooting.
But good luck if you try it again :victory:

How does one get root again once upgraded to 5.1?

Hello! I've upgraded to 5.1 and have lost my root. I have tried using kingo and towelroot but neither have worked. I have tried downgrading to 4.3 re-rooting and then upgrading to 5.1 only to lose root again. Any help as to fix this would be awesome and highly appreciated!
Use TWRP

You can flash twrp to root, then install superusersu. There's a zip file that's been posted in the forums recently by ArkAngel 06 that has everything you should need and a step by step guide to do it. Hope this helps
This question has been asked and answered. Do you guys read the other threads at all?
To get root and TWRP.
Credit to Foltz61.
1. Boot to bootloader.
2. Fastboot boot TWRP-L.img
3. Install supersu-2.49.zip (even though I didn't lose root)
4. Reboot back to system.
5. Reboot back to bootloader.
6. fastboot flash recovery TWRP-L.img.
7. fastboot reboot.
8. Boot to recovery and had TWRP
Thanks
Thank you both for your help! I saw this posted in the other threads but there's been a lot of activity since the release of 5.1 and it was all getting confusing
to get su 2.49 .zip do a Google search u will find it after twrp just flash su 2.49.zip and ur all set .
I tried n its working fine
Would be best at this time to not flash twrp. Instead fastboot boot twrp.img then install the beta.SuperSU v2.49.

If your Bootloader is still unlocked, skip to step 5
UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER
1) Request your 16 digit Bootloader Unlock Code from [email protected] (you'll need to give them your phone's IMEI and SERIAL numbers)
2) Download the HW-QmOneKeyTool to your PC from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/um5sqbwp094r2x4/HW-QmOneKeyTool.rar
3) Connect your phone to your PC, open the HW-QmOneKeyTool and enter your 16 digit unlock code into the text box in the first tab of that tool, then click 'ROOT' {This button should actually read 'UNLOCK'}
4) Now that your phone's Bootloader is unlocked, flash TWRP as follows:
INSTALLING TWRP
4a) Download TWRP Recovery from the following site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/asc.../2014-09-22-teamwin-recovery-project-t2885144
4b) Rename TWRP_MT2-L03_RECOVERY.img to TWRP.img
4c) Move TWRP.img to hard drive C, folder: adb
4d) Connect you phone to your PC, open Command Prompt and type: cd C:\adb
4e) After the adb prompt, type: adb devices
4f) With your device serial showing in the Command Prompt, type: fastboot flash recovery c:\adb\TWRP.img
4g) The Command Prompt should now say "waiting for device"
4h) Unplug your phone and reboot into bootloader (power + volume down)
4i) Once in the bootloader make sure it says unlocked then plug your phone in.
4j) The command prompt should say done after 2 seconds and your phone will stay the same.
4k) Unplug your phone and reboot.
INSTALLING SUPERUSER
5) Download BETA-SuperSU-v2.49 to your root: http://download.chainfire.eu/740/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.49.zip
6) Boot into TWRP and Flash BETA-SuperSU-v2.49
7) download the TWRP App from Google Play, and let it install BusyBox, then run the SD fix if needed
7) Now you can grant Superuser status to Apps that need root
Is there a backup of the mt02 emui 3.1 boot loader before I go to the twrp?

Step 7 is required if you don't have an SD card issue?
For anyone that knows, if you root your device, will this cause issues getting OTA updates from Huawei? I registered my IMEI after converting to OEM and loading Lollipop so I would like to ensure I get these updates and can install without issue.

Trying to figure out if root causes an issue with OTA updates I believe is a valid question. Thanks for nothing though Moody. You're awesome. :good:

Well, your simple one worded response was misinterpreted. How about that...
And yes, it does effect OTA. I just received B20 and it clearly said to make sure your phone was NOT rooted before upgrading, so obviously it causes an issue with the OTA updates.
Root does not affect OTA. Only if you change system files. Stock recovery and stock system files will not. At worst you will loose root and have to reroot.
---------- Post added at 02:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:14 PM ----------
does root affect OTA....type that into Google. Thousands of posts will tell you the same thing.
Was simply reporting what the update to B20 said. It stated ensure your device is NOT rooted before updating. Perhaps it is just them being careful and ensuring that bugs that may appear on a rooted device would be tougher to diagnose.
Personally I don't see a big need for root with no ROM's available for the HAM.
Because you can't make some changes without root. LCD etc.

Yeah, that's true, but to date, I have been pretty happy with the HAM stock. The LP update made this phone a whole new phone. The UI is very nice for an older phone with older specs. Coming from and LG G3 (yes, some would think the HAM is a downgrade), I love the HAM over the G3. The colors are amazing, the screen size is awesome and the new UI for LP is way better than stock LG.
Have a look at a G4. Shame they are expensive
Worth it. But expensive.

Have TWRP but not root HDX 8.9 3rd gen

I got a new Motherboard and daughterboard in my HDX Apollo. I was able to get TWRP on it, but it keeps saying i dont appear to have root. I tried installing the latest supersu but it apparently didnt work. Anyway, i have realized that i just keep getting myself into trouble playing with root. All i want is to get my 3rd gen back to 4.5.5.1 fire os and wait for the fire os 5 update for it(hopefully) Any help on how i can do that? Ive tried downloading the latest Kindle update for apollo, renaming the .bin to update.zip and transferring it over and installing it but it never boots further than the 'kindle' screen.
Thanks for your help, sorry to be a pain
If you're on Fire OS 4.x you don't have TWRP, but Safestrap v4. After what you've done, do you still have access to Safestrap? Installing an amazon update with Safestrap installed, or even just rooted could easily mess up the device, i.e. brick it.
I don't think it's fire os 4x then. It does boot into the twrp interface and is fully functional but when you go to reboot into a different recovery it says something like "it appears you do not have root. Would you like to install supersu?" Even if I say yes it acts like it installs but apparently doesn't. I can post pics later

- how did you "install" TWRP (method)?
- how are you accessing TWRP - just pressing the power button or some key combination (yes, it's important)?
- does a graphic vaguely resembling Frankenstein appear when you power up the device?

I installed TWRP using the method instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...-to-unbrick-kindle-fire-hdx-firmware-t3277197
When i want to get to TWRP i press and hold Power + Vol UP until it rebootes into the Teamwin screen and TWRP. It is version 2.8.7.0 now(the instructions got 2.8.5.0 installed then i upgraded)
I dont remember what the graphic looked like when booting into TWRP but i know it said TeamWin. I can check when i get it charged back up enough to turn on. Ive had it sitting unplugged for days and the battery ran dead. I hope this is enough info to help get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks!
Ok, if it's the real TWRP which it seems to be, Safestrap has no TeamWin logo at boot, I'd suggest you leave it be. Currently you can use all available ROMs, so if there'll be a future version of Fire OS you could use a TWRP flashable version of it. I doubt there will be a Fire OS 5 update for the "old" Thor/Apollo line though.
You would destroy the possibilities you currently have by updating to Fire OS 4.5.5.1.
Meanwhile you can unlock your bootloader (if you haven't already), and update TWRP to 3.0.0-1 (requires unlocked bootloader).
Don't I need root though? How can I unlock my bootloader from the stage I'm at now? I'm just a bit afraid of proceeding in case I brick it again

There's no risk in unlocking, the bootloader either unlocks or it errors/fails. Try the one-click-solution first (might require the PDANet drivers). It's recommended to update the bootloader to 3.2.3.2 (do it only, if the unlock worked ok).
TWRP can be updated from TWRP itself, so I'd recommend doing it that way. Just be sure to flash the TWRP image to the recovery partition.

Lack of a functioning ROM could prove problematic if ADB is not enabled. I do not recall if the version of TWRP you installed provides native support for MTP which is essential for moving files onto the device. You may need to go the manual route to unlock bootloader which still requires tethered access but only at the fastboot level.

Just curious on one thing. Whenever i see a ROM to download it says i need to unlock the bootloader and have root before i can do that. In MY case i do NOT have either, yet i was able to flash a new recovery(TWRP) How is this possible? How would i go about installing a new ROM or unlocking the bootloader?
Is there a way to flash the stock recovery back so i can reinstall fireOS and start from scratch?
Is there a way to tell what bootloader i have from within TWRP?
I realize i probably should have done a little more reading before i started messing with it :/ I do appreciate all the help you have been able to provide so far!
