[Q] I9300 with Cyanogenmod 11 M12 lagging - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
My phone was lagging so hard when I used Samsung's stock ROM, and I decided to install CM... All good... I've been using CM 10.2 (stable) 2 months, it was running smoothly and it really impressed me. But when I started to install snapshots and newer versions (10.2 is pretty old) the lag has returned and my phone has switched back to running like [email protected]#t...
What can I do to get the smoothness back?
I'm currently running :
CM11 M12
TWRP v2.8.0.1
No task manager installed on my OS.
Thank you!

Try backing up all your data and start fresh with CM11 M12. My S3 is on CM11 M12 and its blazing fast, so something went wrong during your upgrade.
It should be back up to snuff after a fresh start. If it isn't, there is something wrong with your hardware.
Hopefully this helps!

Try a full mega wipe ie not a normal wipe
Format System,Cache,Data,Delvik Cache,Preload,Internal SD card.
Warning this leaves you without a system in recovery so (1) Make sure you backup anything you need (2) Make sure you have a rom on ext SD card waiting to be flashed. You can do this manually or there are scripts that you can flash in recovery to do it for you look here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/tool-mega-wipesuper-wipefactory-t1832326 <<
Not guaranteed to work but when I ever got severe lag problems this used to work from me I used to do it about once a month.

[Q] Omega Rom Problem - Slow, Laggy & Unstable

Can anyone help.
I have recently started using Omega Rom...i previously was running stock JB.
I found Omega Rom V34 very slow, laggy and it crashed at least once a day.
I have just upgraded to V35 of omega.....its doing the same thing. Its just shocking.
With so many people using it and rating it so highly, it must be something ive done wrong as people would not use this rom as it is installed on my phone.
I used CWM recovery mode to install V34, i think its version 6.0.4? I got the CWM and rooted it etc through SGS3 Toolkit V6.
When i upgraded to V35, i simply, rebooted the phone into recovery mode using the new menu that i got from the V34 rom.
When it installs, it clears all the cache etc on its own.
When V34 installed i recovered all my apps using titanium backup. When V35 installed, for some reason all my apps were installed when it switched back on.
Any advice appreciated, im on the verge of going back stock!
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that I did a full wipe using the Samsung galaxy S3 toolkit the time I stalled v34.
when I installed v35 just just used the installer so i don't think it did a full wipe.
Please advise the best tool for the full wipe. thanks

i had been on omega and it was smooth as butter. perhaps there are apps that causes your phone to consume big memory and lag...
or you know, you can just flash another one if you are unhappy with it xD

Yeah,
I re-flashed with Android Revolution HD, and used the perseus Kernel.
Running sweet now!
Really happy with it so far.
If you're relying on the installer to clear your system and data partitions, that's where your lag and your crashes are coming from. You have to either use a Superwipe script which doesn't come with ARHD or Omega, or the much easier solution is to just clear cache/system/data partitions from recovery.
edit: let me know on here if you don't know how to do those things and I'll point you in the right direction to the best of my knowledge.
I have the same problem
Flashed latest version of OMEGA onto Samsung S3
Featurewise it's perfect, but there is an issue - like you say, it may be a clash with an installed app.
The lag is most noticeable when I bring up the Apps List, but I find over time it gets worse - if I reboot my phone it's improved again although the Apps List can still be slower than before to load.
I did think a likely candidate was avast, but I have the same issue if I don't use Avast.
Oh and I definitely wiped all relevant partitions prior to the install.
btw I'm not here to criticise OMEGA rom - didn't cost me a dime and lots of happy punters out there.

[Q] Crash after update nightly, now back at CM9

Ok, I got a question what to do now.
The following happened.
I updated the nightly CM10.1 from the settings menu. Normally this works fine. I forgot to make a backup (DUMB). When CM10.1 restarted it never came further than the boot screen (Samsung logo). After waiting for more than 30 minutes I decided to restart the device (get rid of battery). Now CM10.1 won't start again.
Luckily I had a backup, but it was from CM9 (at least I can call). I already tried to install CM10.1 again, but whit no result (bootlooping again).
How to install CM10.1 again? From CM9. What did I forget?
Hope someone can help.
Cm10.1 is no good. Unreliable I think. Try aokp milestone 2 for a solid Rom. If you really want it
Mounts and storage
Format
Data
system
Cache
Wipe dalv cache in advanced
Flash Rom
flash gapps
wipe cache
wipe dalv
Reboot
Enjoy.
or read op first post on first page
I've only just installed CM10.1 on my S2 today. I encountered the same problem with cm-10.1-20130722-NIGHTLY-i9100
However, 0723 worked fine for me. Give that (the latest at time of writing) a go perhaps?

[Q] Stable 4.2 ROM Suggestion

Hello Gang,
A friend of mine just got a I500 from his carrier, brand new, as an upgrade from his non-smartphone phone. But, it is running 2.x. He asked me to update the firmware and he doesnt mind an aftermarket one, but I personally want your input to see which one out there is a more....bare bones firmware with no major setting that could confuse or frustrate him (ie...theming, overclocking, etc).
Ive seen Helly Bean and even the standard CM10.1, Gee Whiz? I dunno. Kinda hoped for a TouchWhiz ROM for him.
Thanks,
Paul.....
Well I'd say (in no particular order )
geewiz,,, super nexus,,, carbon,,, or cm10.1.
But you are not going to go wrong with any of them
if you wanna get him a TouchWiz ROM, look at RemICS JB. it's based off of Touchwiz 5 and looks quite a bit like a GS3/Note 2.
i've had the most success with cm10.1. GeeWiz uses Samsung's RFS file system, so you may see improved performance in that, or more things working.

Well not entirely true, remics looks like tw... But on jellybean 4.2.2 platform.
Runs same partition and file system setup, etc, etc
Avatar Rom has the themes to suite nearly anyone's taste, pretty solid rom too.
They all have their perks!
man, i'm loving helly bean. came back to it tonight after cm7 was having some issues (wifi was being really flaky) and it's fantastic. the things Devil Kernel can too is overwhelming yet amazing
this is the first time i've ever seen this phone run jelly bean 4.2.2, which has its problems, absolutely perfectly. even on my old class 2 SD card. @hhp_211 i proved you wrong man lol

Lol, sweet. Just proved that you had bad flashes before! Lol
Glad you got it!
+1 for helly, it's been my daily rom for awhile now. Tried all the latest but have always returned to hellybean. Hoping for a 4.3 from the devil!
I've been using Helly Bean as my daily driver for a long time and I love it. Once in a while I'll flash the CM10.1 nightly to see how it's doing, but I always seem to have some weird issue or another that makes me go right back to the stability of HB. My only issue with HB is that after using it for a week or so it starts to bog down quicker and quicker. I have to reboot at least once a day now to keep it snappy, whereas when you do a fresh install you can go days without a slowdown. It's not really a huge deal though, and it's still the #1 rom imo.
uh-oh...
Hey Guys,
I flashed Helly Bean via Guide I found here.....and It had no data connection now. I checked through the setting and it's on AUTO mobile networks etc.
Now if I revert back to the Original VZW ROM as indicated in the Guide I do get the connectivity back. Suggestions??

i have also had data on helly bean whenever i flashed it. try reverting back to stock (it should reflash the EH03 radio as well, my personal recommendation for fassy radios), putting Helly Bean on the phone's SD card (along with Ultra Slim Gapps, not regular Gapps) and then follow these steps:
1. open Odin and put the phone in download mode
2. flash ClockWorkMod 4 fixed for CM7
3. close odin, eject phone, open odin, insert phone
4. flash GBBootloaders
5. close odin and eject phone
6. reboot the phone into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and go to advanced>wipe dalvik cache
7. flash the ROM (it'll boot into its recovery on its own, let it be)
8. flash the Ultra Slim Gapps
9. reboot
Sorry, "Stable Roms" conversation is too close to "Best Roms " conversation. As all roms are, or could be, stable for some, but not others.
Users are expected and encourage to read and learn on their own to make these determinations.

slimkat 4.4.3 working (almost) after official 4.3 update

I was using slimkat 4.4.2 and restored the official samsung rom 4.3 to try a mhl cable. The result as you may know is that I couldn't install any custom rom that wasn't based on samsung's after that.
Searching here in the forums I found some people saying that it was because of a layout change on partitions, others because of knox, or the update in bootloader...
I installed the twrp-2.7.1.0 recovery and tried to install omni rom with pa_gapps, cm11 etc and I always get an error for gapps (couldn't find build.prop or something...). Tried Omega v58 (based on sam) and it worked, then I tried slimkat 4.4.3 weekly and slim_AIO_gapps (advanced wipe, everything but extsd, format data) and it installed everything fine.
It's almost perfect but now I have only a small problem... when I plug the headset the audio is really bad and sometimes I can't hear anything ... I tried another kernel with the same result. Tried slimkat 4.4.2 stable, same.
Does it make any sense to anyone here? any sugestions on how to fix? flash something somewhere maybe :x
and what is the real problem after the 4.3 official update? if slimkat is working maybe we can make other roms work too.
Thank you in advance
Do a full wipe, all your previous issues were due to files left over from other firmware.
On the headset, go back to stock firmware after a full wipe. If still the same then it is hardware.

I still can't install most roms even with full wipe (gapps error) after the 4.3 official update but I'm happy with slimkat. I think maybe it works because it just copies the gapps files to android without doing other checks, maybe editing the scripts we can "force" the install of other roms too. If anyone have any info, please tell me.

Oh, I think it was just a series of bad coincidences. Tried the stock firmware and the headset did not work. Seems like my headset broke the same day all that stuff happened, and I tried the one I use on PC but it didn't connect firmly on s3 so the sound was bad too... just tried a new phone headset and it's working fine.. thank you

Nexus 4 - Installing Paranoid - result fail

Hello folks, impressive new look (haven't been around for a while now),
My original Nexus4 runs PA 4.6-BETA4 but I smashed the screen and the new screen is low quality plus the frame around is not looking decent anymore. Therefore I got the Nexus4 of a friend which upgraded to Nexus5 because it is in mint condition. I unlocked and rooted today then I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.2.3.
After the backup I attempted to install either
pa_mako-4.4-RC1-20140611 or
pa_mako-4.6-BETA4-20141007
after wiping the data/factory reset and wiping the cache partition.
I keep getting an error after starting the flashing procedure. I used the backup to go back to what it was on the phone previously which is;
Android 4.4.4
M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1701.03
Kern: 3.4.0-perf-ga6edd5e
Build: KTU84P
Can anyone tell me what I did wrong please? Thank you!

You should upgrade the recovery. 6.0.2.3 is a little older. They're up to 6.0.4.9 or even higher now, not sure off the top of my head as I prefer TWRP.
Will try this, thanks!
It worked! Thank you dear Es, have a beer or two mate!

:good::highfive::victory:
If you're curious as to why it happened, I believe it's because the "older" recoveries lacked proper SELinux support needed to install newer KK roms.

I have another question if you don't mind, looking at both devices now and they have the same documents and music on them I find intriguing that my old Nexus4 has 849MB free while the new one has 8.46GB free. Can you suggest a way of getting rid of the unwanted hidden files (could be backups)?
Much appreciated,
Chris

Just copy what you want off the phone to the PC and then use CWM to format the internal storage and then reboot and copy back the files. This will give you a clean slate to work with.
BTW - I just installed the unofficial Paranoid 5 on my Nexus 4 - Mostly AOSP but running very smooth me like looooooong time
