Three weeks ago I had my SGSIII rooted and with a custom ROM and regular backup in the external SD card and everything was working OK.
I wanted to remove all the information form the internal memory and decided to format the internal memory, so using CWM (6.0.4.7) I made all the wipes and formatted:
/system
/cache
/preload
/data
I think that one of those formats was the source of the error, but I don't know which one!
Afterwards I tried to access the externalSD card from the restore menu to restore one of my NAND backups, but the extrenalSD card was not accessible (E: Can't mount /storage/sdcard1) neither from the install zip menu (same error). the SD card was OK because was workable in another phone. I tried to mount the external SD card from the mounts and storage menu but gave an error (Error mounting /storage/sdcard1!)
Since I could not restore my NAND backups, I restored the stock ROM (JB 4.3) using odin and afterwards I rooted the phone and install again CWM (6.0.4.7) but the problem persisted and now I am using the stock ROM and can access the external SD card from android normally.
I have looked about this error and all the cases I have found are using older versions of CWM and recommend to format the external SD card, so I did, but the problem persisted.
So my questions are:
- What have I done wrong?
- How can I fix it?
Afterwards I thought that I could copy the NAND backup from the external SD to the internal memory so I made NAND backup to see where it was stored, but using ultra explorer I cannot find the location (furthermore, according to the DiskUsage App the space is used but does not inform me where it is).
I have asked Google for the location of the backups in the internal memory (I can not recall such locations) but the folders did not exist or where empty. So:
- Is it possible to copy a backup from the external SD card into the internal memory?
- How can it be done?

Hello All,
Just got a white one without any external SD-Card (the micro SD) installed. I was able to root it using the CF-ROOT V5.0 guide which is an excellent resource for noobs like me.
Using the CWM (which shows in the applications menu after the root) I was able to take phone complete backup.
Now the confusion begins that even though there was no external SD card installed the backup took place and then it was saved in

/sdcard/Clockworkmod/backup/folder_name_date_time
Infact /sdcard is the home directory to start with, which is shown when I browse files using the built-in file manager called "My Files".
So when is there is no SD-Card installed, why is the internal home directory called SD-Card , where the nandroid backups are saved automatically ? (i guess the internal storage is also called SD-Card, is it so ? bad naming idea then)
Now I did install a 2GB external SD-card and formatted it using the storage options within the settings menu.
So apparently this (actual) SD-card is mounted in the directory called
Code:
/sdcard/external_sd
Then again I tried taking a nandriod backup hoping that it would automatically detect this available external sd card and would save the backups, which did not happen and the nandroid again took backup to the internal SD storage.
So how to direct nandroid to take and place backups on the external SD card.?
Secondly I have also read about the Sd-Ext partition, can someone please explain what is this partition , how is it made, and what is the benefit of using this partition. Can i make it a default location for installing application and what other uses can I have of an SD-Ext partition.?
Do i need App2SD and Link2SD in order to use SD-ext partition for any purposes.?
If I take a backup again using nadriod would it place it on the SD-Ext partition or the left over space in the regular SD card partition. ?

I have searched and can't seem to find anything similar to what I am experiencing.
I am running cm7 nightly #116 and siyah Kernel (latest version)
I booted into clockwork recovery to do a nandroid backup, and when I performed a reboot afterward my internal SD was no longer visible from within the OS. My external SD card is mounted as /sdcard and there is nothing in /emmc. I tried removing my microsd and when the phone boots it does not see itself as having any SD storage. (neither internal nor external)
When a run a df -k from the terminal I do not see my sd cards partition.
However if I boot into clockworkmod recovery I can still browse the contents of my internal sd partition with no issues. (via flash zip from internal sd card) Does anyone know what could cause this or what method I should use to try and fix it? I believe my backup should be ok.... but I have no method of getting the files out of my internal sd because when I "mount usb storage" it only mounts the external sd.
Fixed. Formatted system and did an advanced restore from an old nandroid backup. Reboot and voila.

I am trying to create an sd-ext partiton so I can move applications and backup to that partition on my 4GB external SD card.
I've got ROM Manager 4.8.0.8 but when I select Partiton SD card it reboots and tries to reformat but I don't see anything on the Card just a LOST.DIR folder. I can't read the system messages when in Recovery mode cos it all happens so fast.
I tried via ADB and booted into recovery and selected the option to partition manually but still nothing. I reformatted the card with FAT32. Nothing.
Am I doing something wrong?
Just throwing something out there. Try rebooting into Clockwork Recovery. In CWR, go to Advanced -> Partition SD Card -> Select the size. If it doesn't work, it shouldn't reboot your device (If I remember correctly). Take a look at the log (Advanced -> Show log).
Hopefully this helps a bit.
Hmmm he's right,you have to flash cwm first.
If your device is not listed in rom manager,find cwm for your device on xda and connect your device to the pc in fastboot mode,extract the zip and copy recovery.zip to the folder where fastboot on your pc is and give the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
after flashing cwm,do as suggested
Also,you can partition it by downloading Easeus partition manager on your pc and choose the ext2 partition as the second one and a size of 512 mb is enough in most cases
go into CWM and select advanced thn move onto partition SD card
it would ask u how much space to partition after that select swap size as 642 or above and wait for few minutes.... remember tot ake a backup of ur SD card as all the data would be cleared while partitioning
Thanks. The first problem was that the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery 4.2 doesn't see my external SD card. No idea why. I used the 3.2 version which does see the external card and formatted the card first (after backing up!!). Then Advanced Partition SD card but I get a message saying : "Too many people have bricked their devices by doing this. Therefore this feature has been disabled."
I tried another Recovery Manager - Rogue Recovery and that showed messages saying it was formatting. I rebooted but when I looked at the SD card - nothing. However, I downloaded Easeus partition manager (looks good) and it showed that there is an sd-ext with a lost+found folder in it.
Is that normal? If yes then why didn't someone say that it would be invisible?!! If not, what happened?
Seems there are problems with the SD card. When I try to point TitaniumBackup to my SD card it sees the folders as Read Only. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18559 and http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18501. It was obviously a bit silly to call internal storage the same name as an external SD card. HD as in hard drive (I know its not) would be better. Or just Storage or whatever. NO doubt people have been accidentally formatting their internal memory instead of the card and that's why it was disabled in Clockwork Recovery. And by the way I'm using the hacked Android 4 - so the problem is still there even in 4 (Ice Cream)
The easiest way to get sd card partitioned is using Mini Partition Tool on PC.

Now does cwm also do the ext partition? and if not what program would work well I have a 2gb sd card for my samsung admire and I want to make a ext partition so i can move some more files to it.And later get larger card up to 16gb and do the same.

Currently having an issue with my SGS2.
Have been installing the custom vanilla rootbox roms for a while and the most recent update process has been from 3.2 -> 3.3.1 -> 3.4.
What has happened seems to have happened on the last update is the internal (non removeable) mmc card doesn't seem to be mounting.
Going into CWM recovery and choosing the "install zip from sd card" to use as a pseudo file browser, i can view both /sdcard (removeable sd) and /emmc (internal sd) and see all the files, but when the phone boots up only the external card is visible.
Browsing the files system:
/extSdCard - has external card files
/sdcard - is empty
/storage/sdcard0 - is empty
/storage/sdcard1 - has external files
/emmc - does not exist
So for some reason /emmc is not mounting to /sdcard + /storage/sdcard0
Is there a way to fix this issue? Also does CWM have a file-backup facility that i can backup my hidden files to the other sd card, or is there another method i can do this?

I had this issue and managed to resolve it by using the following steps:
I backed up the phone using Titanium Backup to the external SD card (mmcblk1) and then shut the phone down and removed the SD card (to ensure it wasn't erased at any point).
I then booted into CWM recovery and re-partitioned and re-formatted the internal SD Card (mmcblk0p11). I then formatted /data, /cache and wiped the Dalvik cache to start afresh.
Once booted, I made sure that the internal SD card mounted correctly and was showing the correct amount of space (approx. 11.5GB).
On my computer I then copied the Titanium Backup files off the external SD card, repartitioned it as a single partition (MBR-style, not GUID/GPT!) and then then reformatted the partition as FAT.
I re-copied the TB backups back onto the external SD card and put it back into the phone. On reboot, the phone mounted both partitions as expected.
I then restored from the TB backups and I've not had any trouble since.
I'd been living with the issue for a while and it was driving me insane. The turning point came for me when I removed the external SD card once and it mounted the internal SD card correctly (which it hadn't done in a long time). It was then I realised that it was something about having the two together that wasn't working properly for some reason. This is why I repartitioned and reformatted them both as "stock" as I could to ensure that they worked in their "out of the box" state.
I'm not entirely sure why this happened as it did, but it seems to be working correctly now for me (and I'm very happy!).

Hello again everyone, I have a 4gig sd card that I use with my s2 i9100, but for some reason Philz touch CWM recovery doesn't detect it. Now this happened before and I just formatted it via the storage settings on the phone, I then successfully did a nandroid backup to it. A few days later I planned on installing cm, so in preparation for that i decided to test out that backup just in case. But now the Sd card doesn't show up when I press restore and I cant mount it
.
Things Iv tried:
formatting it via storage settings (what worked last time)
formatting it using windows
doing the above again but this time dragging the copy of the sd card I made prior to the first attempt at formatting onto it
Edit: now the backup on my internal sd has gone missing, really confused about this one)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not comfortable flashing without having a backup on the external sd
