[Q] How to control which applications have wifi and data access? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title suggests, I was hoping someone could tell me an application that controls data connection access of my apps. I currently use Onavo Count but it seems to not monitor Wifi usage which isn't a problem but I can't access the list of applications and set restrictions either. At least not without activating my data connection and waiting for the applications to use data it seems.
In the past, I think last year? I used Onavo, it had the option to observe both wifi and data, thus allowing me to set restrictions on data usage.
Any apps you guys can suggest that has a nice interface as well?

Apps starting when data connection opened

Hi, I was wondering if there's an app or a setting to avoid some apps as facebook and market to auto-start when data connection or wifi are on.
Anytime I start data, their services are always started by their own.

Droid wall I think, but why would you want htem to not connect...
no, I don't want them not to connect, just want to start them manually when needed, not to start by theirself and drain memory. I want ofcourse grant them the internet acces, just want not to start automatically

android does not work that way, free memory is wasted memory, it is not like windows. If that memory is need linux kills what is not needed. If you are doing to keep free memory then dont bother...I always want all my memory being used...2.3 rom handle the memory very well and there is no need to manually kill apps or use 3rd party apps to do it like task killers...they are redundant on 2.3+ roms
and from the battery draining's point of view?
and if it affects the battery, is there a way to do what I said?

[Q] How can we download certain apps in 4.0?

Is there a way to maybe spoof the Android Market so that we can download apps that it says we can't install because it's incompatible on the device? The main example is My Verizon because it's useful for monitoring data usage.

If you are running ICS it has the data feature built into it.

I don't know about everyone else, but that's never worked for me. I'm not really worried about it cause I have unlimited data, but if you do want the Verizon app you can always sideload it. I've seen the apk floating around various places.
So far, I've never had data usage actually actively work. Although oddly the wifi data usage operates correctly. I like the My Verizon app though because it tells you your actual usage from their side, as opposed to the 4.0 feature or an app like Onavo, which I'm using, that has inaccuracies.
I'm actually the person who asked for it in JT/TeamHacksung's thread on RootzWiki but I just realized I didn't word the thread correctly because I'm more trying to see how to update some of the apps that the Market says are incompatible.

[Q] Stop Background Data without Disabling Data

I am currently roaming in roaming in the U.S. at quite high prices. I want to use my phone to get notified of new e-mails, whatsapps, and facebook messages. However, because roaming rates are quite high, I want to make sure my phone doesn't use any other background data. For example, updating weather widget (w/o my manual refreshing), or checking my apps for updates. Especially checking for app updates is a huge waste of data. I tried disabling the update notifications in play store, but it still seems to check because when I go to "my apps" it already knows which of my apps are out of date.
Is there an app that will only let selected apps access my data?

If your phone is rooted you can take the app "LBE Privacy Guard" from play store. With the app you can set the permissions for all your apps.
regards
Thanks! I am using LBE Privacy Guard now but Android is still eating away at my data. I disabled 2G/3G data usage for all apps except Whatsapp and Gmail. in thee Firewall section I can see how much data my apps are using. Over the last 3 hours Whatsapp has used 5kb and gmail has used 122 kb, according to LBE no other app has used any data, yet it shows that I have used 372 kb over the last few hours. At $1 per MB on roaming I will be spending about $1.50 a day at this rate even if I do not send or receive any messages. This is too much data usage for background apps I am not using. And when I am roaming on Y-mobile my charges go up to $16 per MB, which would really be too expensive. And unfortunately there are no SIM cards in USA that you can just buy for prepaid for a few days.
Have you disable "background data" and "auto sync" under settings on your phone?
regards
originally I didn't because then i figured it won't check my whatsapp messages anymore. But I tried it just to see what would happen. I have now disables EVERY app to use internet and turned off syncing. I still used 832 kb of data in the last 12 hours.
Google should really work on this. I wish they had a feedback line. How can they make it possible to turn data off, but not make it possible to limit my data use when data is turned on?
As much as I travel, this is a dealbreaker for me. does anyone here have an iPhone and can confirm if data can be completely controlled on it?

yes but the new 4,o update will not allow you to do that

If you're rooted, install Avast Anti-Virus. It provides a nice firewall. It supports different sets of firewall rules based on Wi-Fi, Home data, Roaming data.
By default, its in "Deny Selected" mode. Just, switch to "Allow Selected" mode and allow those apps in Roaming column.

This has got to be the funniest statement ever, iPhone has no flexibility. Turn on WiFi and data turns off. Turn off WiFi and data turns on.
There is no way you can make it so it restricts certain apps.

This works great. I have firewall all google apps. when I try to go to the store it tells me no services. How about services that are not an app?

You'll have to hunt down that by yourself. Google that or ask here..
Have you tried droidwall ?
It can enable/disable data connection (wifi and or 3g) for each app and service individually.

Hey I am not sure what that means. In EL29 i was able to stop background days in one of the set up options. In FF18 that option I'd no longer available.
That's all

[Q] Popup asking for Internet Access?

I like LBE Privacy Guard, especially for its on-demand permission requests when an app asks to access my SMS Inbox or whatnot; I like that I can ensure that it never accesses it, always does without asking, or continues to ask each time.
I'm also using the firewall with mixed results; I don't like having to choose each app and whether it's allowed to access the internet via 3g/wifi ahead of time. I'd like a popup request with similar options (though I guess it would be more like a timeout rather than per-session, e.g. "yes it can access the internet over my 3g connection but only for the next 10 minutes."
Is there already an app that does this? I've checked a few firewall apps like Droid Wall (and a few similar apps) and they don't offer this on-demand (or on-app-accessing-internet, I suppose!)
I'm rooted, of course, so I'm not constrained there.
+1!!! Looking for the same thing! Trying to hunt the hog that sucks my data!
Thanks!!!

I reckon that LBE Privacy Guard should help you with that: you can switch on traffic monitoring and get a listing of how much data each app has used.
I'd advise you to do this for a week and then switch it off (after you've worked out what's costing you money), as the data monitor drains battery faster!
Thanks. I already use LBE and My Data Manager. Turning APS ON one by one I try to find the sucker
But it would be easier with pop-up type app.

Regarding Data Usage / Manager

How to control the data usage? The battery drains fast with 3g data connection. Do we have any app to restrict the data to other installed apps on our own wish? When I choose restrict background data option, I lose the push notifications. Can someone suggest the best data control app which lets us the option to choose to only selective applications can access data? I have installed 3g watchdog and data manager, with these app, all I can see the data usage only and I couldn't manage/restrict the data accessed by the applications that are installed in my phone. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
